12:12 AM
223 rep away
@NathanOsman you're here! ;p
maybe not...
I didn't know Macs were actually 32-bit when they were on Intel...

The first generation was

Apparently so :p

sure, for a while you had to hold down 64 on boot on my macbook pro to boot in 64bit mode

and apple sometimes preferred older processors

It just doesn't seem like a very Jobs sort of thing to do
@Mateo what?

12:23 AM
Meh.

lol, what does Jobs sort of thing mean..

Jobs wasn't a technical guy

@JourneymanGeek Sometimes?! HA!

transitioning from 32 bit to 64 bit is rather complicated

@JourneymanGeek but he generally designed good products

12:24 AM
then some of the photo-shop plugins disappeared ;P

@Chan-HoSuh They transitioned from PPC to Intel..

@Zacharee1 and then 32bit on intel to 64 bit on intel

@Zacharee1 beep wrong
Jonathan Ives did.

even a long in Java, which is 64 bit, and Java's supposedly platform independent, has a funny quirk due to how machine architecture was designed
a long in Java is actually made up of two 32 bit integers
which means you can't assume a read/write to a long is atomic

@JourneymanGeek huh?

12:26 AM
Essentially I suspect Jobs set a wider course, but didn't really go into the deep implimentation
So he's like "I want a thin computer with a high res screen"
then you'd have a team of engineers design the internals
then design around it

@JourneymanGeek if Jony Ive was such a good designer, why have Apple products fallen so far since 2011?

Sir Jonathan Paul Ive, KBE (born 27 February 1967) is a British designer and the Chief design officer (CDO) of Apple Inc. He oversees the Apple Industrial Design Group and also provides leadership and direction for Human Interface software teams across the company. Ive is the designer of many of Apple's products, including the MacBook Pro, iMac, MacBook Air, Mac mini, iPod, iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad, iPad Mini, Apple Watch and iOS. == Early lifeEdit == Ive was born in Dilliwood, London, United Kingdom. His father was a silversmith who lectured at Middlesex Polytechnic. "He's a fantastic craftsman...

right, and he was supposedly pretty good at achieving the seemingly impossible, but he knew when to stop pushing engineers to do the actual impossible

@Zacharee1 Cause they've gotten kinda set in their ways
they're the king of their little domain

don't make me link the fake subtitle video of the guy laughing ;O

12:28 AM
I had a Mac Powerbook from before the whole unibody thing
it was pretty horrible
aluminum body would warp under the immense heat
pretty easy to dent your powerbook back then too

@Mateo lol

I thought Ive was responsible for the unibody design

@Chan-HoSuh I am glad they put fans in, but that doesn't make up for a computer that should cost $300 instead of $2000

how is it $300?

12:30 AM

you can't get a similar ultrabook without paying much more

@Mateo yes..?

made out of metal?!?

@Chan-HoSuh The specs inside a Macbook Pro are very similar to HP's Probook line. To be fair, those do cost closer to $500, but stil..

12:30 AM
obstructs it's own wifi?

I think the clearest design differences after Jobs died, is due to iOS

Made od metal ;p

@Mateo having fun?

arguably, GUI design has gotten worse

@Chan-HoSuh YES
NOT ARGUABLY

12:31 AM
Also, unlike the macbooks, runs windows (and prolly linux) and lets you slap on a full sized GPU as an option

iOS LOOKS HORRIBLE
@JourneymanGeek exactly

@Zacharee1 I would doubt ProBooks are considered equivalent to Macbook Pros
all the other manufacturers like Lenovo, et al, aren't idiots

@Chan-HoSuh I'm not tooooo sure about that

@Chan-HoSuh Take a look at the hardware. Probooks run the best on Hackintosh for a reason

see Superfish...

12:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek lol nice

Also, lenovo keeps messing with some of the compelling features of the thinkpad
Like the keyboard

Toshiba is still annoying

@JourneymanGeek and then there was more, they put stuff the reinstalled to the os in the bios

(amusingly, HP makes the island style keyboard I like the best)

12:34 AM
And I have one of their lowest end systems, and completely love that little blue piece of shit.

@JourneymanGeek I just wish HP made other appealing stuff, like a good computer :p

@Zacharee1 this is on a HP Stream
Shitty display relatively but really solid, cheap, simple machine.

@JourneymanGeek the problem is you are using your criteria (slaps on a gPU as an option etc) as the general criteria for the market

@JourneymanGeek I don't like HPs. I had a Probook 3540s and while it's not meant to be good, it was pretty terrible except for the trackpad

@Chan-HoSuh And lower price/better specs than its OS X counterpart

12:36 AM
when Apple does it survey of the marketplace to see how it can be competitive, they don't come to AskUbuntu and take the results from here as definitive, for some reason

@Chan-HoSuh sarcasm?

@Chan-HoSuh Apple's target market would be people who get it cause its a mac

a bit :) all in a fun though

@JourneymanGeek pretty much

That's their major competitive advantage

12:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek I would assume brand is priced in, yes

I actually had a few people admit to me that they buy iPhones and such because they look pretty. They didn't care how well it worked

some people are probably concerned with interoperability with their iDevices

@Chan-HoSuh Have you heard of Google?
Hangouts?

@Chan-HoSuh Guess why they buy the idevices?

@Zacharee1 yep

12:38 AM
Does exactly what Apple does, except for a longer time

@JourneymanGeek presumably because they are great :)

@Chan-HoSuh Have you used an iDevice lately?

Naw, they're iDevices, and "They want an iphone"

@Zacharee1 yep

Me? I look at the market, try to find the best fit for my needs/budget

12:39 AM
@Chan-HoSuh they get really slow after one or two major version jumps
@JourneymanGeek Zenfone

@Zacharee1 I havent noticed that

@Zacharee1 for me its a moto G

@Zacharee1 just iZombie lately ;P

@Chan-HoSuh My iPad is extremely slow and glitchy on iOS 8
@JourneymanGeek meh

Which lenovo may be killing off, despite it reviving the entire motorola brand

12:39 AM
@Mateo :p

generally I don't upgrade my software unless I have to

oh, they didn't make that show :)

@JourneymanGeek Lenovo owns Motorola?

@Mateo they'll copy it eventually

12:40 AM
but I generally discount that kind of anecdotal evidence since I've heard that kind of thing about everything, including Ubuntu

They Don't own the Letter "i" yet??!?

@Mateo iOS is a Cisco trademark

And they're killing off the moto brand (for "Moto by lenovo") and supposedly focusing on bigger screens

@Chan-HoSuh that's another problem I have with Apple. If you stay on the same iOS version, you suddenly can't download any new apps anymore

that is true with any os now...

12:41 AM
@Mateo Most Android apps still support 2.3

0_o

@Zacharee1 seems like you've worked out your iDevices more than me. I generally just stick with the basic apps and such and my iPhone has been great

not most of the ones I use...

@Chan-HoSuh I do a lot of fiddling with the iOS filesystem and I can tell you that with every new version, frameworks move, install locations move, things get removed or added, just to mess people up
@Mateo really? Almost all the general purpose apps I see say Android 2.2/3 and up

like all the llightbulb apps with spyware, targeting insecure versions?

12:43 AM
@Mateo I do see some that need Android 4.0 and up, but that's still more backwards compatibility than iOS
@Mateo ◔_◔

:P

Totally. I love to put Stagefright-inducing apps onto my phone. Only problem, 5.1.1 patched it :(
:p

(I admit, I run windows on the desktop, android on phones - and I might root this one since I'm not getting new versions, 3 full android releases on, linux on servers. Used to work with older OS X versions and hated it ;p)

:p
Apple only started keeping "support" for its older devices after people started moving to Android

that makes sense

12:46 AM
Why did they give the iPhone 4S iOS 9, but not iOS 7 to the iTouch 4?

lol, a lot of those decisions aren't really as diabolical or well thought-out as you might think
once you work in a big organization, you realize what drives those business decisions... and it's not a plan sometimes
or maybe a better way to put it, it's someone's plan but not anybody else's

@Chan-HoSuh I'm not so sure... everything fits so well :p

the human mind is good at that
even Jobs conveniently forgot the iOS SDK was never part of the original plan
we have a way of connecting the dots after the fact

@Chan-HoSuh IIRC he wanted to just have everything as a web based app
ala the late firefox os

yep that's right

1:17 AM
@Mateo Heh, really?
I need to figure out something to do

oh, how about phone your us rep?

?
Ooooh, right.

I found this api
and if you could figure out how the yelp scope did the phone thing
it could be neat

I would do it, but isn't the contest international?
Besides, most of the Ubuntu mobile stuff is, unfortunately, EU

yeah, true

1:21 AM
USA Congress wouldn't be a winning entry :/

limited market, and no fancy pictures :(
I might file that one away to practice on one day :)
it was an api without needing a key

Maybe I could do an app that combines a bunch of different livestreaming sites. Twitch, Beam, Hitbox, etc.
What do we need is the question

well, they lyricwiki api still works, although with the docs page gone, it could go down anyday :( so not going to finish it for the contest...

Is there a Twitter client?

yep
it's nice too

1:25 AM
I figured
I wish Discord had an API. Would do that.

browse through this:

I had a really good idea, but now I can't remember it :/
All I remember is that I thought it was good

1:38 AM
How about a StackExchange Chat app that actually works?

lol, that wouldn't be a scope :)

SHH
make it......

@Zacharee1 I'll look into doing that as a side project. Maybe

In all honesty, though, it would be great to have some sort of wrapper that supported notifications (@NathanOsman ?)

you would have to keep pulling down to refresh ;)

1:40 AM
@Mateo :p

@Zacharee1 Hmm?

oh, you mean on the ubuntu phone?

@NathanOsman an SE chat app that supported notifications and the new mobile interface
@Mateo I was thinking Android/iOS, but something like that could probably be cross-platform pretty easily, right?

@Zacharee1 No, not really
Android uses Java, iOS uses Objective-C, and Ubuntu mobile can use a bunch of different ones

@RPiAwesomeness Thought Android also used C++
or C#
yeah, C++ and Java

2:14 AM
ooo, this looks like fun - I might try this one: programmableweb.com/api/commandlinefu.com
wansn't getting anywhere with the library of congress
I should totally make it copy text to the terminal app ;)

bash uses until instead of while?

what do you mean "instead"?
it has both

@Chan-HoSuh idk, I just saw someone using an until loop (look at the new Qs)
It looks almost like a while loop
aww
doesn't exist in Arduino

all these loop control mechanisms are kinda cruddy
better to not use loops

Not for everything, but they are useful
Arduino kind of has a while(true) loop built in ;p
@HeatherBrown browntech.tk isn't a template?

2:39 AM
I'm waiting for the day when someone posts an answer to correct someone's grammar or spelling

@Zacharee1 The system is probably picking up "links" in the apt output.

@Seth no, the edit problem

yes, exactly.

Oh, I get it

New user restriction includes links. No more than 2.

2:49 AM
Yeah

3:03 AM
look at this "lovely" logo:
Actually looks a lot better with a light color behind it
bedtime

user139252
@Zacharee1 it started as an attribution free one, but I made some pretty heavy changes to colors, fonts, section headers, etc

Q: Unable to create Kali Linux bootable USB with Windows10/Ubuntu

vipin8169I am trying to Triple boot Kali Linux with windows and Ubuntu. Ubuntu and Kali Linux are both already installed on my Dell-Inspiron. I was following the tutorial at this page to make the Bootable Kali USB Drive. I was able to create it on both windows as well as Ubuntu, but when I go to the boot ...

Q: Configure Sub-Menu button in kodi?

mayank budhwaniI use mimic skin with kodi 15.2 installed on my Ubuntu PC. Now I would like to change the onclick event of a submenu button(eg power>quit). I tried modifying Includes_Menus.xml but the button still does what it did previously. Do I need to change another file?

5:30 AM
That bug still exists, BTW. The chroot had to be created a second time after applying the provided fix.
I am completely baffled as to how a bug of this magnitude can go unresolved for two releases.
I believe an announcement is in order.
Warning: to anyone entering the Scope showdown with an encrypted home directory, apply this fix first or you will get a lot of confusing errors.

Well, 7 hours later and I finally have the Ubuntu SDK / IDE working.
I'm worried that if I so much as look at it, something will break and the whole thing will stop working.

12:06 PM
hi @edwardtorvalds . you have mentioned askubuntu.com/questions/724913/… as a dupe but the answer/command mentioned on that page is not working for me on ubuntu 15.10

@kashish ignore it, I will delete it

@Zacharee1 They're going to replace the Ubuntu Software Center with it in 16.04 in all flavours as far as I know.

user136984
@NathanOsman It's not included in Ubuntu GNOME yet.

1:54 PM
Hey, what do you think about my idea for the off-topic close reason banner?
0
A: Add Elementary OS Stack Exchange to the off topic banner

Byte CommanderI have a completely different suggestion. What about rewording the banner to something like This is not about Ubuntu. Please visit our [off-topic compass] to find out on which partner site in the Stack Exchange network your problem might fit best. And then create a nice community-wi...

2:13 PM
no need really, they are on topic on u&l
you can leave An extra comment pointing out the site

@edwardtorvalds you were looking for me ?

user136984
@ByteCommander: Sounds great! I like it! :)

2:29 PM
Hello :)
Hi @ByteCommander Hi @ParanoidPanda Hi @Serg Hi @Seth ! :)

Hi

@jokerdino Hello ! :)

hi

2:43 PM
@cl-netbox morning
@seth are you a C person ?

@Serg Hey bro - how are you doin' ? :) ... it is afternoon here ... :)

@Serg not really.

@cl-netbox surviving the best i can . . . .
@seth so would it be much to ask an opinion on my recent answer ?

that should be fine

@Serg : me as well ... :)
Does anyone have a good idea for a working solution ? @terdon and me already played around with permissions ... nothing worked so far ... :)

Q: KVM - qemu - virt-manager : How can I store files in the mounted shared folder?

cl-netboxI am running a Fedora Workstation virtual machine on an Ubuntu host. I created a folder /home/cl/share in the guest and mounted the shared folder /media/cl/system/virtual/share as root following the instructions from linux-kvm : mount -t 9p -o trans=virtio,version=9p2000.L /host /home/cl/share ...

user136984
2:52 PM
@cl-netbox: Hi! \o :)

@Serg still here?
o./

Hi @edwardtorvalds ! :)

@cl-netbox hi man, whats up?

@cl-netbox I just pasted it in /dev/chat (the U&L chat room). Maybe that will attract some interest. I'll also ping derobert about it next time I see him, he'll probably be able to help.

@edwardtorvalds debian terminal thing solved ... but shared folders not - see above ... :)

2:59 PM
@cl-netbox how ?

@edwardtorvalds @terdon and me created a new user profile - mine was corrupted ... :)

@cl-netbox how do you mean user profile was corrupt? which file was corrupt?

@terdon Thank you very much ! :) everything else works fine with KVM ! :)
@edwardtorvalds no - the whole thing ... as it only was a test VM it would take too much time to figure out more ... :) maybe something went wrong while upgrading to 8.3 :)

@edwardtorvalds yes , at work. So i might be disappearing time to time

3:02 PM
when using nano on Ubuntu code is coloured, I cant get this work on gnome with arch linux

@edwardtorvalds you mean nano isn't colored on arch ?

yes
I mean on gnome

Nano should have files for that. Let me boot my Ubuntu

@Serg thanks man for booting :)

@edwardtorvalds OK, so nano has directory /usr/share/nano/ where you should find *.nanorc files for different languages. Do you have that ?

3:11 PM
@Serg Yes I do

@edwardtorvalds and what do you have in that folder ?

Strange . . . your text should be colored anywhere, Gnome or not
What about . . . awk '/^include/' /etc/nanorc

@Serg no output

@edwardtorvalds exactly ! That's your problem. You have the files but they're not in /etc/nanorc
Hold on

3:15 PM
@Serg show me your file

@edwardtorvalds have a look at /etc/nanorc, the default Arch one has the relevant lines commented out. Try uncommenting this line:
# include "/usr/share/nano/*.nanorc"

@terdon @Seth Here's my recent answer , C language, also somewhat off-topic on the site , so please VTC. askubuntu.com/a/725208/295286 What I'm looking for is . . . anything that I should add ?
@edwardtorvalds I'll post mine in a minute

user136984
How does one report bugs in the 16.04 installer?

ok
@terdon thanks

3:16 PM
Yeah, I just tried that and it worked for me.

@ParanoidPanda um . . .launchpad probably ? I'm no bug reporteer

user136984
A cat nearly just walked across my keyboard... :D

my problem solved
:D

@edwardtorvalds perfecto ! Yay

user136984
@Serg: I know, but which project/package?

3:19 PM
@ParanoidPanda Try launchpad.net/ubuntu/xenial They should move it if it belongs somewhere else
@ParanoidPanda also, I wanna write a script for your "pdf reader in command line" question
It will be working only in tty though, because it uses framebuffer

kos
(this should be deleted by the way)

3:34 PM
@kos have you vtcd on that EOF question ?

I installed PhantomJS using gist.github.com/julionc/7476620#file-install_phantomjs-sh . How can I remove it?
Or upgrade it/

kos
@Serg No, why do you think it should be closed?

@ParanoidPanda ubuntu-bug ubiquity

@kos because it's about programming . . .and general programming questions are OT here . . . :/
In fact , I should have VTC'd that thing right away. Good question, but not for this place
But it finally made me figure out EOT carp for myself at least

@Serg take a look at this code: sprunge.us/OOPZ

3:42 PM
@Serg looks fine to me, although I wouldn't know if EOF is -1 or 0..

@Serg after compiling it, I ran it as ./a.out <<< $(echo a) I get output as a but when I run it as ./a.out <<< $(echo $'\04') I get output as a box. I second case I Think I shouldnt output anything

hi any help on uninstalling if possible.

@edwardtorvalds There's a reason why chars can print it, they're very useful datatype, and can be used instead of ints to store small values, specifically we use them on microcontrollers, because memory there is limited
BUT !!!
More importantly . . .take a look here
skolodya@ubuntu:$ gcc EOF.c  -o EOF
EOF.c: In function ‘main’:
EOF.c:4:5: warning: format ‘%s’ expects argument of type ‘char *’, but argument 2 has type ‘int’ [-Wformat=]
     printf("%s", EOF);
     ^

kos
@Serg Well it's tangentially kind of off-topic because they asked it in relation to their program, but EOF is a notion used by (any?) tool that reads STDIN (and the method to signal it is the same), so I think it's useful to have and on topic. It would be better if OP expanded their question to EOF in general though.

Read the error please
@Seth thoughts on that being off-topic or not ? ^
@edwardtorvalds so . . . .what do you think ?

3:53 PM

@edwardtorvalds Works for me:
