Q: What to use when "ls" command doesn't work?

user117441I tried to use ls command and got an error: bash: /bin/ls: cannot execute binary file what can I use instead of this command?

@Doorknob printf only seems to print the first file in a directory though..

@Doorknob Consider "%q\n" if the printf` supports it

@muru Why? My printf does seem to support it, but I ran both in my home directory and the output was the same.

@Doorknob escapes spaces, newlines and other special characters

ah, didn't even know that was an option. I'll add that into my post too; thanks!

Welcome. Weirdly, bash's printf builtin supports it, but the GNU printf command doesn't.

Huh. That's odd.

One of the great mysteries of life.
But then again, if OP's ls isn't working, chances are GNU printf won't either, and the builtin's all that's around.

OP never did say why ls was borken... in fact, the account seems to be deleted now O_o

@muru can you test my version please, OP has an error awk: line 1: illegal reference to array first

@A.B. Might be a gawk/mawk thing. The answer works with gawk, but doesn't with nawk, and I don't have mawk handy.
@A.B. In regex, (.*)\1 is a simple way to find a repeated string (like abab). The \1 is a backreference to the parenthesised group, if .* matchd something, it will make the \1 part match for the same thing

ok, the power of regex

kos
@Seth Sure, thanks for the willingness. It's on a shared hosting: the exploit itself it's not of interest I think, basically they managed to upload a PHP file containing a base64 encoded PHP code eventually decoded and eval'd within the script, and that's how they managed to get some type of access, altough I don't have a clear understanding of what the code does (it's pretty long, I can post it if that helps.).
However the point is they managed (I guess) to get access to the control panel I've implemented for the client, which is behing a simple login system I made.
Now the only option I can think of is they managed to perform some type of SQL injection, however I'm not able to replicate it. By now i've tried only using '*' as the username, as soon as I get back to the main machine I'll try also OR 1=1, however mysqli_query seems to take care of that (I'm using only mysqli functions).

jrg
@blade19899 Malware? Missing something.

kos
I don't know what other type of injections could there be, or if there are other options, I'm pretty inexperienced on this field. The query I run for the login is this one: SELECT * FROM utenti WHERE username="' . $username . '";

jrg
@kos OK, so rule #1 for a breach is to move production to another system, from a known good backup.
rule #2, isolate the compromised machine, then #3, dig into it.

Fixing this, anyway do you think sudo su is not good?
Ok thanks

@kos sudo su is just slightly better than su.
Either sudo su - or (su - if root has a password) or sudo -i.

4:33 PM
@muru What? Why would you ever run sudo su instead of simple su or sudo -i?
I've never understood why sudo su is so common in the Ubuntu world.

@terdon I wouldn't. I would run sudo -i. But if su has to be used, su -.

Yes, OK, if you want a login shell.
sudo su just seems like the least efficient way possible and for 0 gain.

@terdon seconded.
@terdon and if I want a clean environment.

I truly don't know why Ubuntu folks recommend it. I've never seen it outside the Ubuntu world.
@muru Indeed.

On the other hand, one person actually rolled back an edit I made that changed to sudo -i, saying that's what people want.

kos
4:38 PM
@muru So if I understand sudo su doesn't set the environment while su - and sudo -i do?

Q: What is the difference between GDM and Gnome-desktop?

Mudit KapilAs GDM is GNOME Display Manager but it installs the GNOME desktop also when I replaces it with LightDM So what is the difference between installing GDM or installing Gnome-desktop environment?

@kos sudo itself will clear some variables, but otherwise sudo su no better than su.

Did I miss anything in my answer ? Merely gdm lists gnome-shell as dependency but , gnome-desktop lists gdm as a recommended package, so for gnome-desktop, it's not gonna be installed.

@Serg gnome-shell is not gnome, it's only a part of gnome. Many apps depend on gnome-shell, gdm is one of them. Gnome itself doesn't depend on gdm though, why should it?

@terdon Well, that does make sense. Gnome is desktop environment, I wouldn't expect a display desktop environment to depend on some login screen.

4:45 PM
Test it out:
sudo env > sudo-env
sudo su -c env > sudosu-env
sudo -i env > sudoi-env
sudo -s env > sudoi-env
su - -c env > su--env
su env > su-env

And then `vimdiff` the files.

Tsk, vimdiff, your partisanship is showing vim mod.
:P

@muru stupid question but that is su with one dash then -c or su --c ?

@Serg May be there are more packages and application associated with gnome-desktop

@Serg But GDM is giving me a full look and feel of a GNOME-desktop environment

4:53 PM
@Mudit absolutely, there's more. gdm has gnome-desktop as a dependency, but gnome-desktop also has some dependency packages, so it's alot of packages, to put simply
meh, i don't have vimdiff

@Serg Just use diff, like a normal person (normal person = one who doesn't use vim)

kos
@muru Thanks, I see. However the last command gives No passwd entry for user 'env'; sudo passwd env gives passwd: user 'env' does not exist :|

@kos I think he meant su -c env
@terdon Of course, a "normal person" can only compare two files. There are certain benefits to that strange editor.

kos
However vimdiff only compares 4 files at the time, is there a way I to compare more than four?

wait , su env ? duh, of course it's gonna complain

@kos it gets very hard to make sense of the output when comparing too many files. I don't know of any tool that can do it.
@Serg I was looking at your and @A.B.'s answers here, well done!
Unfortunately, your NR/2 idea will break if the variables don't have an even number of fields.
For example, try:
printf ".1.3.6.1.4.1.759.2344.454545.12.1.3.6.1.4.1.759.3234.433226" | awk '{gsub("\\."," "); half=NF/2}; { for ( x=1; x<=half; x++ ) { if ( $x==$(x + half) ) printf "."$x }; printf "\n"}'
It's a neat trick but only works for even numbers of fields.
@muru that's a really cool sed solution. You might want to add an explanation though. If I understand correctly, the N saves the current line in the pattern space so the next command is applied on both lines, right?

5:18 PM
@terdon yes, I was concerned about that somewhat, but left the thought aside since OP's working with uniform numbers and requested comparison of first 7 fields. I could always add pipes to cut, so that it trims both of the numbers to appropriate lengths

@Serg He did? Where? The question asks for comparison of the entire string to extract the first N identical characters.

@terdon if you look at the comments, specifically couple last ones between kos and OP

@Serg That just says that he wants to stop comparing at the first non-identical character.

I'll just ask . . . I mean, the solution isn't universal, gonna be very specific to this case, I guess

In any case, your solution will also fail if there are three fields in one variable and 4 in the other.
I think it basically fails whenever the two strings don't have the same number of fields and the longest comes second.

5:28 PM
yup, exactly right

Perl experts
I have matrix
how can I set @matrix[1][1]? @matrix[1][1]="foo" doesn't work

I could probably getline them into arrays, split , and then compare each array item, with for loop stepping from 1 to size of smallest array.

@A.B. use $ instead of @:
$matrix[1][1]="foo"
That's an element of an array, not an array, so you need scalar $ not the array's @

5:44 PM
o_O

@A.B. It's the same reason why print @foo prints everything in the array @foo but print $foo[0] prints the 1st element of @foo.
@ == array
$ == scalar
So, when dealing with scalars, even if they are part of an array, you use $.

@NathanOsman: In NitroShare, using 2 Windows clients, when following a link to a non-existent directory (E.G. Example pictures) the transfer bails out and doesn't continue. Is this by design or a bug?

@terdon thank you =)

@NathanOsman I was waiting for you to show up to ask you instead of re-sends...

Are you saying that the directory you've set in "Preferences" doesn't exist?

6:35 PM
@Serg Sorry, I was a bit busy.

Nope, I'm saying that I'm transferring the entire Pictures directory from a Windows client to another Windows client

@Fabby common, learn Perl with me =)

@Fabby And it isn't working? That's a bug alright.

and that the FROM directory contains a .lnk file

Oooooh.

6:36 PM
OK, I'll file a bug report then!

@A.B. no problem. I'm still agonizing over that awk question, with the NF/2 method

and the lnk file points to a non-existend directory ...

It's currently not designed to handle .lnk or symbolic links.
So either it is trying (which is a bug) or it's failing somewhere else.

OK, but it shouldn't just fail, right?
So what do I do?

It can't easily follow .lnks.

6:37 PM
Nothing? Or File bug report?

...because then you could create an infinite loop by creating a shortcut to a parent directory.

OK... it should then just copy the lnk-file, right?

This would result in infinite recursion.

I see...

@Fabby Yes.

6:38 PM
@Serg Can I help you?

Although ignoring it would be valid as well.
I'm not sure... maybe Windows itself throws the error when the link is invalid.

@NathanOsman yeah, but it failed and refused to send the rest of the directory...

@Fabby Yeah, that's a bug.

OK... Filing!

If you would like to file it, you can do so here: github.com/nitroshare/nitroshare-desktop/issues/new
If not, I can do it for you.

C U in Launchpad...

Not in Launchpad.
Bugs are filed in GitHub now.

6:41 PM
:D Just found that out!

@A.B. Nah, not really. That question already has accepted answer. I'm just being obsessive about my awk code, because the idea seemed good at first, but . . .what if the two numbers aren't equal ? So I've made this code , basically I'm taking both numbers, turn them into arrays, and iterate over each element (ending is the size of the smallest array/number ) . paste.ubuntu.com/11758351

I don't understand. It works for me
% a[6]=.1.3.6.1.4.1.232.13600256.887.1
% a[5]=.1.3.6.1.4.1.232.13600256.885.1
printf "${a[5]}${a[6]}" | ./similar
.1.3.6.1.4.1.232.13600256.1

What if the numbers are .1.3.6.1.4.1.232.13600.256.887.1 and .1.3.6.1.4.1.232.13600256.885.1 ? Then the total number of fields for two joined strings isn't even. In this case it's gonna be what, 19 ?
so I can't divide by 2

Umpf
that's true

so I made this lengthy code, where i turn two numbers, into array, and print only similar parts. (the one in pastebin). But I'm thinking whether to post it or not
OP hasn't responded to my comments yet, so I don't know if I should expect strings with different size or not

6:52 PM
I've assumed that the strings are the same length.

Yup. From OP's examples they are. But terdon pointed out, what if they're not ? anyway, I'm confused . . . so . . . .beer !!! and smoke :D

beer, a good idea

@NathanOsman ;-)
@NathanOsman Sorry to bother you again, but should I leave the PPA in this answer untouched? (I just updated the links to include nitroshare.net)

@terdon yeah I've gone ahead and reopened that.
Terrible terrible question though.
Just look at this comment:
hat is how i thought i ...how woudl i rund the puthon scri? — user3069326 yesterday

anyhows, muru's answer is already accepted, my answer covers the case of numbers of equal length, so i guess i'll stop at that

7:04 PM
@Seth Yeah, I would have probably reopened and closed again as too broad.

Good idea.

@terdon I still cannot get that awk question out of the head. I tried turning them into arrays and process with awk, but is there any way to make it simpler ?

@Serg I would probably just compare increasingly long substrings until the comparison fails.

@terdon O_O holy cow, that's right !

Aah @Fabby, what are you doing there?

7:18 PM
@A.B. I'm just updating links in all Questions/Answers that mention "Nitroshare" to nitroshare.net/downloads @NathanOsman

@Fabby Thanks!
And yes, the PPA is still the same.

@Serg I'm sorry, I don't drink during the week...
(actually, I forgot to drink last week-end too!) ;-)

forgot to drink, hmmmmmm

@Fabby Well, I'm on vacation so I guess I could cut myself some slack,right ? :D

@Serg Hey, you're over 16 right? And that's the legal drinking age in the country you're in right now, right???

7:23 PM
@Fabby 18 is the legal age. I'm 24, in July turning 25. So I'm of legal drinking age of all the countries
unless there's some country whose legal age is like 30 o.O

@Fabby thanks for the bug report.

@Serg When I was a kid, the legal drinking age for beer was 14...
The legal drinking age for drinking hard liquor was 16
the legal age to drive a car was 18...

We've got it the other way around.
You can drive (with supervision) as soon as 16.

I liked it back then: teach the kids to drink first! Then teach them to drive!

@Fabby when I was 14, I also was drinking beer. But the legal age was still 18 . . . what happens in the country side, stays in the country side <.<

7:28 PM
Nowadays it's all 18: smoking, blowing, drinking, driving...
No wonder kids die on the road!
>:)

Why would anyone want to drive? That's one of the things I miss about big cities... mass transit.

Holy Aho, Weinberg and Kernighan . . . terdon just gave me a solution to a problem I was beating for 2 hours in just one sentence, no even one word. Substrings. o_o

Heh, he's good for that

@Fabby kids die on the road exactly because they're drinking, driving , and blowing all at the same time. These activities have to be separated :D Although I do smoke while i drive a lot

@kos Why did you delete your answer? askubuntu.com/a/639478/367165

Q: my ubuntu server is showing high upload bandwidth,

Nishammy ubuntu server is showing high upload bandwidth, i checked with wire shark and its showing some chinese and hongkong ips. only uploading .am fed up, whats happeniing to my server, please need help

@hbdgaf to move trailers? to fetch monthly groceries?
@Serg Yeah! That's why we used to have laws separating those... Nowadays with EU unified laws: not any more! :(

I don't go out for movies and we talked about my cooking in batches, so it's easy to carry in a few bags, cook for a week and freeze half.

@hbdgaf you can cook ? that's awesome. My skills are limited to frying eggs, frying noodles, and boiling some spaghetti.

@Serg Anyone can cook. It's like anything else, you just have to screw up at it a lot. The problem is eating your screw ups enough times to do it right...

@hbdgaf true. that, and also wastage of products
@terdon added version with substrings askubuntu.com/a/639551/295286
@A.B. ^
o_o awk doesn't seize to amaze me
@Fabby what's the EU unified law ?

7:41 PM
@hbdgaf I agree completely! >:)
@Serg EU law trumps local law...
Read the Lisbon Treaty and understand how we're going down!
;-)

There's probably good aspects to it, but every country has to have some self-regulations. Like, Colorado has legalized marijuana ,but other states are still nope-ing out of it

Hey, in the US, state law trumps Federal law!
the opposite of the EU!
That's why they're called "the United States of America" and "the European Union"
Huge basic legal difference...
I remember my history teacher in high school saying:
Forget about the USA! They were 100 years ahead of their time!

By the way, another question on the parsing of ls

We still had Tsars and kings and emperors while the USA already had democracy!

so ls has this flag -b

7:47 PM
@Serg Sorry =\
echo ".1.3.6.1.4.1.232.13600256.1\t.1.3.6.1.4.1.232.13600276.1" | awk 'BEGIN{i=1}{ while(substr($1,1,i)==substr($2,1,i)){var=substr($1,1,i);i++};} END{print var}'
That's wrong
.1.3.6.1.4.1.232.136002

Yup, same as my output. Prints only the things that match

@A.B. Because he doesn't want to compete with Might God Muru??? ;-)

^^

@Fabby I am not on that level yet to compete with muru or terdon or even Jacob Vlijm. But I am stubbornly trying :D

@Serg Good attitude =)
@Fabby Why not :P

7:51 PM
@A.B. like seriously, when I only had just tiny amount of rep, I was looking up to muru and chili555, I didn't expect at that time I'd be like . . .here . . . even talking with higher rep users

kos
@A.B. Because it's bad :| it prints also potential matches after a non matching field

@Fabby There is actually a large amount of debate and conflict over that point at the moment... think DEA shutting down smoke shops in various states that legalized some substance.

@kos There you go! ;-)
@hbdgaf There might be a debate, but unless the constitution is altered, the DEA can only annoy people who don't know the law...

kos
@Fabby Huh? O.o

(or are too poor to pay for expensive lawyers)
@kos I told @A.B. earlier that you didn't want to compete with Mighty God Muru!
;-)

7:54 PM
@Fabby Sort of... it's a death by paperwork to fight things or reclaim anything that was seized though. Example: a fellow I know had his house raided under suspicious circumstances and never got all his belongings back. Not drug related.

kos
@Fabby Yeah, I wouldn't in general, altough that particular answer came from SO!

You know what I would find highly amusing? If there was a non-fatal exception in Python - NonFatal Exception - NoDuh for when you state something like samevariable = samevariable.

kos
@A.B. Yeah that's the problem :( I can't find a way to force grep to exit upon the first non-match. I think it can't be done.

better than returning nil

7:58 PM
Why after the first non-match?

@kos what exactly you're trying to do ? can you link the question ?
