4:00 PM
@Serg Holy!
@Serg Are those including each pronoun at least?

:D some versions for male runner some for female . . .and in different context. like "ran away (from prison)"

@terdon Oh...

This is why i love chinese : 跑。 Run. Past tense ? 跑过。 No matter male or female
will run ? 会跑

kos
Ah ok I see, so it's a different verb? Or is it a specific case of use of the same verb (running out of prison)? If the second one I'd freak out learning Russian

@kos It with propositions included in the verb, it's tenses and "has been running", "was running", "was running to", "am running from"....

4:06 PM
@kos what fabby said ^
plus different prefixes and suffixes

all that in Russian changes the verb...
it's just very different....
That's why so lillte Russians speak another language:
you can study Russian all of your life and still not know everything...
Whereas why most Flemish speak at least one foreign tongue:
by the time you're 18, you know everything there is to know...
Quadrilingual people in Flanders aren't an exception...
lillte = little
@kos So your mother tongue is Italian, right?

@Fabby nah, that's because Russians in high school are like "Why do I need to learn another language ? I ain't going abroad anywhere " . By the time they're old enough and wanna go work abroad, they regret it

kos
@Fabby Ah ok I see. That's pretty much crazy by the way!
@Fabby I'm considering dropping my purporse then, altough I'd love to learn another non-european language
@Fabby Yes

I speak only Spanish (my mother tongue). Then (shorted by fluency): English, Turkish, Romana. (I read cirillic but don't know russian)

@kos mandarin chinese :D I can even help you out sometimes

4:16 PM
Except the Spanish and English, I only know isolated words and I can't listen a native w/o mind blow

kos
@Serg That to be honest scares me a bit because of the gliphs!
Altough it could come in very handy because of the number of people speaking it

@kos I keep on saying, focus on conversational aspect first. If you dive into grammar and writing at first, you're gonna loose interest in any language. Find on youtube this guy --> laoshu505000 . The dude speaks like . . . i dont even know how many languages, and that's what he's preaching - focus on communication first, on practical, daily stuff first.

kos
@Fabby I know you speak both German and Italian, but where have you born? (if I may ask)
@Serg You're right. My problem is I'm very ambitious and picky, and I tend to try to know every aspect of a thing I'm learning, toward the obsession. I'm trying hard to drop this attitude

That's actually quite good, you're striving to be well-rounded in every aspect, and I do admire that. But as the saying goes, rome wasn't build in one day, right ?

kos
Yeah, correct :)

4:29 PM
@kos Flanders! :D
@kos I speak Dutch, Afrikaans, German, Italian, French, Russian and a bit of Arab (though I can't read it) and Hungarian...
The more European languages you know, the easier it gets...
E.G. The russian word for Orange is nearly identical to the Flemish word.
The russian word for landscape is the same as the French word.

I'd love to learn some arabic. Mostly because of a sudanese girl that works in my engineering department . . . . <.<

Good morning: Aas-lè-mà...
(but with a guttural a sound like you scratch tour throat)

I know 'habla' , I think that means 'stupid' . And Ramadan Mubarak , that's all

kos
@Fabby Well you and terdon know a bunch of languages. I guess I'll ping either for a quick translation if needed then!

Google translate does a good job at getting the gist...
not perfectly translated, but good enough to see what it's about.

4:38 PM
@Fabby Arab?

I've used google translate sometimes when my chinese friends asked to translate technical stuff into russian/english. Cuz I'm not on the level where I can freely translate documents, yet

Slowly I feel uneducated.

@A.B. Nah! It's what you've been exposed to...

kos
@Fabby Yea sure, just for saying. The problem with Google Translate is of course translating from your mother tongue towards another one. Really crappy results

I know C, Z80 assembler, PASCAL, LOGO, BASIC and JavaScript.
@kos nah! the other way around works...

4:41 PM
@Fabby You might ve worked on 486 in past

some people here know C++, C#, Perl, Python, Java, ...
and I have no clue...
So what?
Especially python: looks a bit like COBOL to me...

I think, I should learn Python or refresh Perl

I remember learning turbo pascal at school in ukraine . . .i wish i could go back and see those pcs again. Man, I've never expected to start learning c and java, and stuff, and scripting

if your definition doesn't start on the third column, it doesn't work... (sigh)

but i do love it

4:42 PM
Good for you: I'm still on bash...
next one: go...

<-- mksh

In Java I program for years.

I've got the manuals already...
@A.B. You see? you can do more then me!

what are the symptoms that some law agencies are recording your cyber activities

kos
@Fabby Actually I'm quite surprised you're right. Tested with a random article from Wikipedia. Nice! They must have improved it in the time since the first time I tried (and dropped) it

4:43 PM
Too bad there is no bash compiler...

@A.B. you've got perl ,too :D

Java was my job

I remember a customer of mine if someone asked:
How do I ....
at least 3 people shouted: PERL!
:D

compile a code javac and execute it with java :)

Hm Perl or Python what do you think?

4:44 PM
@Mudit that's not compiled neither!
It's just translated to p-code...

kos
@A.B. Perl!

@Mudit that's how i did everything in my intro to java class. Write with nano, compile in command line with javac, and run.

kos
Altough Python could be nice for GUI stuff

@Mudit or just use javac mycode.java && java mycode

He, a new question

Q: code matrix to letter

user3069326a txt file I have looks like this 1 3 6 7 9 11 000000 100001 000101 110100 000100 the recoded version should be UUUUUUUUUUU YUUUUUUUUUY UUUUUYUUUUY YUYUUUYUUUU UUUUUUYUUUU for this the first row indicates the position of the column - between col 1 and col2 there is a column which is not pr...

=)
Do you now gmusicbrowser?
It's written in Perl

4:47 PM
@A.B. That's a homework question...

select * from master

It does not look easy.

then Drop table master

kos
@A.B. And indeed off-topic, that's a programming question

make a PDC and forget about BDC
LAN WAN MAN @Fabby uses too much RAM

4:55 PM
Do you know what a MAN is?
SAN?

metropolitan area network

I'm impressed. (unless you googled that...)

@A.B. by the way, about that script. It still doesn't work for my machine. I don't know why, but only compiz config works for me.

storage area network
local area network

@A.B. so my laptop is just weird. still, you've done good job :)

4:58 PM
@Serg OPs system is Linux Mint with Cinnamon
=\

@A.B. that explains it. I've been beating my head on how to do that in Unity

=)
Write an answer with Compiz

what are the changes we would see in Ubuntu 16.04 apart from systemd
will there be wallpaper contest
what is the diff. betwwen mir and unity7

@A.B. nah, OP specifically wanted Cinnamon, besides I'm lazy :D
@Mudit mir is display server, like xorg
unity is desktop environment

@Serg and lightdm

5:08 PM
lightdm is the graphical login screen, like gdm. They merely load whatever desktop environment you want.
like if you don't use lightdm , you would login to tty and run startx
lightdm lets you have pretty login screen with pictures and stuff

ya but startx does not load desktop environment and hangs mostly
how do I change gdm from lightdm
What are the advantages and disadvantages of GDM and LightDM

@Mudit Right, I have desktop, but no Unity right now. On Alt-F7 I have this (normal unity )and Alt-F1 is the unity-less desktop
to change to gdm , run sudo apt-get install gdm , it will ask you to select default desktop manager
chose gdm

ok

kos
No text-processing fun today :(

@Mudit if you wanna go back to lightdm, go to tty and run sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm and select lightdm again

5:14 PM
is GDM better than lightdm

@kos I know, it's kinda disappointing
@Mudit it's not prettier, quite simple

kos
Yeah, pretty much

@Mudit I personally use lightdm-gtk-greeter. Instead of the default lightdm greeter where you scroll for users, gtk greeter has a drop down menu

ok I am going to try thanks @Serg
@Serg Now I am using GDM
how can i check it via command

i think simply logging out should do the trick. if you still see that default screen, go to tty and run sudo service lightdm stop ; sudo service gdm start

5:33 PM
@Serg Yes GDM is also nice
i feel same only login screen is bit diff

exactly ! It only changes the login screen

ya and you get choice either to login in GNOME or Ubuntu
without installing desktop environment

I've got 7,333 rep right now . . . Nice triples , right ? :D only this isn't 4chan
@mudit really ? Hmmm, i may have forgotten that gmd also installs gnome, but . . . i'm surprised

@Serg so nice to have both GNOME and Ubuntu without installing desktop environment but does Ubuntu uses lightdm or gdm

@Mudit no,no,no, if I understand correctly installing gmd made you install gnome desktop environment,too. I'm still kinda surprised, since I don't think I had this happen when i installed 13.10 versions of ubuntu. Ubuntu , by default, uses lightdm as login screen

5:48 PM
@Serg but I've run sudo service lighdm stop so how it is using lightdm
means Ubuntu session

oh, right

is there any command to find whether GDM is running or Lightdm in Ubuntu session

@Mudit lightdm or gdm are not running inside ubuntu session. They are literally different login screens

what I know GDM gives option to login in to GNOME or Ubuntu

lightdm also should give you that option, if gnome is installed on your system. Remember the circle next to your username in lightdm ? img.netupd8.com/lightdm-ubuntu12.10.png

6:14 PM
@Serg Nice thanks for GDM information
@Serg means 7333 rep right now thats good for you keep it up

6:30 PM
@Mudit thanks :) I really wanna reach 10k by the end of this summer

7:08 PM
@A.B. does dmesg -T | grep 'associated' do anything ?

@Serg no
I can't think in multidimensional arrays =\

@A.B. think of them in geometric terms. 2d array is grid or table. 3d array is like a cube or molecule structure.
@A.B. interesting. What about your ubuntu version and kernel ? My uname -a Linux anaconda 3.16.0-30-generic #40~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jan 15 17:45:15 UTC 2015 i686 athlon i686 GNU/Linux

7:44 PM
@Serg sorry, I'am now on my smartphone.
But I think I have 3.19

@A.B. i guess that could be the reason why it's not working

And I have Vivid installed.

15.04 ? I'm still lost with code names

15.04 yes

@kos by the way, the Edit Network Connections menu also shows time when a particular connection was used last. I think that's what that file's
Except it shows 'now' for current connection. It doesn't show at what time it was established

7:54 PM
He guys, I need 26 more points for 200 today. ;) Can anyone review my answers please? ^^

I'm on it :)

^^

@A.B. that should do it :)

Thank you :) I hope, it's not a serial upvoting :)

@A.B. one small thing : askubuntu.com/a/638333/295286
A file can only belong to one group, but a user might belong to multiple groups. Like file owned by webadmin group, but admin could be also in webadmin
isn't that right ?

8:01 PM
Yes, I think so.

8:17 PM

@blade19899 facedesks
xkcd is awesome

@Serg Always! xD

8:53 PM
How it's possible to get a +6 without downvote?

@A.B. being the only user in askubuntu.com with 7 accounts.

9:08 PM
@Helio wat ? so +1 for each account ?

@Helio I have one account, what do you mean with seven?

@A.B. I just think youve got couple of questions where you had downvotes deleted

@A.B. @Serg: It was a joke. Implies being the only human that visits askubuntu and creating 7 accounts with their 7 email addresses and up vote from all but the poster one. ;-). Yes it sounds to detective novel but...

9:40 PM
@A.B. So when you downvote an answer they subtract -2, right ? When a question is deleted, those 2 points get returned. So probably 3 questions where your answers had -1 got deleted for some reason.
Or for editing something

10:27 PM
@Fabby you do it. I'm too lazy to write how to install and configure it and all that. askubuntu.com/questions/638803/…

jrg
10:42 PM
@NathanOsman Totally does!

@jrg what's your awk version ?

jrg
4.1.3 on cygwin
4.0.1 on ubuntu 14.04.2 (Devbox)

GNU awk , I hope ?
right, gnu 4.0.1. I got the same.

jrg
awk version 20070501 on the Mac.

@jrg can you do me a small favor and test this little script askubuntu.com/a/639321/295286 Heemayl has issues with it, and i suspect it's because of mawk not liking |&

jrg
10:46 PM
> awk: cmd. line:1: (FILENAME=- FNR=875) fatal: can't open two way pipe `numfmt --to=iec 757' for input/output (Too many open files)
seems to work fine on my linux box
works fine in cygwin
the mac has issues with it, but i'm not surprised.

@jrg thanks. So it is issue with mawk

jrg
:-)

Once again, I come up with nice solution and it only works for half the people. facedesk

@Serg | getline is POSIX, so if there's a problem, it shouldn't be with it. Too many open files == close(cmd)
|& isn't, though

@muru is close gawk specific or is it POSIX as well ?

jrg
10:58 PM
@Serg so the reason (I think) it failed on my ubuntu box was because I ran it on my home directory - i have a few gigs of file in there.

@Serg POSIX

jrg
most of them text, and therefore tiny... so lots of files

@jrg a few gigs of textfiles ? how ? and why ? oO

jrg
@Serg you know, lots of code bases.
i work on 20-30 different git repos each month.

11:01 PM
impressive

jrg
~/code alone is 940MB, and that's not including all of the application dependencies. There's probably 2-3x that hiding somewhere else.

I've ran the command through / . Nothing broke.
T_T I'm confuzd

@Serg though I don't see why |& is needed at all - | works just fine:
find / -user bro3886 -printf "%s %p\n" |
awk '{ cmd="numfmt --to=iec "; cmd $1 | getline result; $1=result;print; close(cmd) }' |
column -t

@muru yup, that works fine with my gawk ,too. I found out how to pass output from shell command to awk just now, so I followed "the recipe"

11:24 PM
Welp, I give up . . . good night guys !

11:47 PM
got it working with mawk
find . -maxdepth 1 -user xieerqi -ls | mawk '{command="numfmt --to=iec "$7; command | getline var; $7=var;print }'
weird but it works
find . -maxdepth 1 -user xieerqi -ls | mawk '{command="numfmt --to=iec "$7; command | getline var; $7=var;>
