4:00 PM
i'm in a bad mood today... hopefully nobody gets on my nerves :/

@terdon haha. *throws antimatter at @terdon's computer*
well, at least there's very tasty cilantro-y turkey here

Oy! That will obliterate my computer, myself, my dogs and most of my neighborhood!

@terdon getting up a 4AM for a 6AM call didn't help
@terdon oops, i meant to actually do this... *throws a ton of dark matter at @terdon's computer*

Oh, dark matter. That's OK then :)

4:04 PM
@terdon orly. 'cause this dark matter interferes with computers
apparently it gives off an interference field
and unless it or your computer are in a Faraday Cage...
meh
i've had a bad day though :/

You're kidding right? How could they know it interferes with computers?
The stuff is virtually undetectable so, presumably, emits little to no radiation of any sort and is only found way out in deep space.

@terdon #calvin&hobbesIsAlwaysRight

@terdon but we don't know what it does, and if it is virtually undetectable and doesn't give off any radiation how do we know it exists
better question how do we know it ISN'T all around us
@terdon even better question: how do we know it isn't toxic

4:22 PM
@ThomasW. Gravity effect. We can detect it because it's mass is affecting the rest of the Universe. No idea if it's toxic, that would imply that we can somehow metabolize it and that is unknown.

@terdon you could say the same thing about a xenon atmosphere - no oxygen and we die - if it has THAT effect on us well... :P

Well, yes, but that's not toxic. It's just not conductive to life. Toxic is actually quite specific. And sorry, I got into my pedant biologist mode.

@terdon and now i'm bored
so here's the antimatter i didn't throw at you
*puts a single gram of antimatter on @terdon's computer monitor*

Cool, I've always wanted some!
I have to snort it, right?

just give it a second, that containment field will go away
*watches the computer monitor disappear in a disruptive reaction*
meh i'm bored

4:29 PM
Feel better after your little cathartic episode?

@terdon nope, still angry at existence
i blame the coffee shop being closed

Q: How to poweroff headless machine using a script

Nate LockwoodI have a Java application that starts automatically when the headless machine (Ubuntu 14.04 Server) boots and runs as a user. When the application is finished I need it to execute a script to poweroff because an external breaker is about to be thrown which will cut the power. I cannot allow to ...

Amir Hossein JamsidiI have a remote server and I was able to connect via ssh to it but some they I could not any more! I ssh to server with my laptop and my android phone but from some day every time I am trying and the message is connection closed by server. But EVERY OTHER devices or computers are able to conn...

5:23 PM
@Fabby I saw some pings, what's up?

Nothing, really... I'm trying to get your answer as the "base" answer where all other answers are referred to...
We need to take it up with @Seth though, as this is beyond my experience here...

\o

Erm... what? I just came back after I left for the canvas chair in the sunshine... It's about my long answer to Toroidal's apt-get question, right?

o/

Sorry to bother you, but:
this [Question&answer](the askubuntu.com/questions/598833/…) is better then the original that it was duplicated to...
so my proposal was to reverse-merge...
but before doing that, I promised Mighty God Muru to take it up with you or Oli.
I would: start with duplicate on the old one to the new one and then take it from there...
Anything else you want me to do???
(or smite me down right now before I make everyone's life more difficult)
[end] :-) Your POV?

5:31 PM
What will happen then? The old one gets closed and the one with my answer stays as it is plus some more answers or what?

Yep, there's already a flag on the post :)

(sorry for the delay, little brothers are very distracting except when they are sleeping... :P)

I don't really see any reason to reverse merge it though..

OK...
I did, but I will bow to your wisdom!

There is this function called editing you know ;)

5:33 PM
:P >:)

The only real reason you reverse merge is if the first question is absolute junk (not the case) or the second one has waaaay more votes+views, which also isn't the case so.. ;)

yes... But before editing and doing the work, I wanted ByteCommander to have the rep that goes with it...
As I said: my POV is different: Unless a community post, reverse-merge is less work then edit and the credit goes to the better answerer...
But I will bow to your wisdom and do what I do best:
-- nothing ---
>:-)

Sorry, this is my first merging process I may witness... I don't really understand what will happen now?

Nothing!

@ByteCommander Your answer will be moved into the master question.

5:36 PM
Okay. That's usually the best option as long as you don't know what to do..

OK! :-)

So that is NOT nothing then...

I must have misunderstood...

Reverse merge is when all the other answers come to the new question.
Which doesn't happen too often.

Like I said: I might have a bit of reputation, but not a lot of experience on the management of the site...

5:37 PM
And after the move, what happens with the votes?

@ByteCommander You keep all the votes, although the accept mark will go away.

That's only -5...

Well, I think I can stand those 15 points going away...

15 actually.

I had a good day yesterday (+99), so that's okay. Today's spent bounty is also almost paid back...

5:38 PM
true!

@ByteCommander It's not really up to you anyway, merging is a normal function of the site. We don't do it unless the duplicate post as very good answers though :)

Well, who says that it IS not actually a very good answer? ;)

:D

I think it's a great answer!

I think you 2 can handle it and I can go smoke!

5:39 PM
It is just not very popular as it was posted only two days ago...
Well, it's up to you half-gods anyway, so who am I to complain about that. Do whatever is best for AU (because you would not listen to me if I said anything else) and that's it.
Oh, and it was one day ago, not two. To be exact: 22h
versus 4 1/2 years for the old one.

anyone here? say 'hi Wim's mom"
nobody? my mom is disappointed in you ;=D

Hi Wim's mom!

Good evening Wim's mom! o/
;D
I did not know your name is Wim...

@ByteCommander I did know that though >:)
I got a weird problem.
doubleclick in nautilus does not work on a user session. on my admin session it does work

@Rinzwind Well, who on earth would ever had imagined this...
Not that Nautilus did ever work, but THAT bug sounds new to me... My brother never complained about something like that...

Q: How to enable double-click

user158624I can't open folders with double click anymore. Instead I have to right click and press open. How do I reenable it? I'm running Ubuntu 13.04.

might be it

@Seth Is Toroidal's question now deleted or what happened to it? I can see my answer on the old one now.

@ByteCommander if it is the one I believe was discussed erarlier it probably got merged
what the heck!

Yep, so that means the newer one is nuked and the answers and comments moved over to the older one, right? I can see how my answer wandered over, but I'm interested on what happened with the question. Just closed or gone to Nirvana?

262 upvotes and someone just downvoted me

5:54 PM
Ah, closed. Okay.

@Rinzwind Was the double click speed set to high?

@Seth yes it is but I am on my admin account now. I checked mouse settings and saw it on high but I did not realize that is the problem.on my admin it is not on high. so I deducted it will be the problem

cool
wonder how that happens.

That sounds like the first case of Nautilus being falsely accused of having caused a bug! ;D

@Seth I blame my mom

5:57 PM
Feel ashamed, Wim's mom! You did make Wim's mouse go crazy! ;D

yeah well imagine me on the f***g phone going: you need to double click
I am I am :X
right
oh ubuntu needs a reboot
system is slow so bb in a bit

6:18 PM
That is a joke, isn't it? Tell me that is a joke and we have nobody called "windows_user" on AU!

A: Ubuntu can't find the correct max resolution with Samsung SyncMaster SA300

windows_userformat your HD with windows (could be windows using technology from 10 years ago like the now obsolete windows xp). I think linux guys are all masochists or have plenty of time to waste.

Hello
I am using tmux
I have split the pane horizontally with "
top for vim
bottom for the python interpreter
How can I change the amount each pane gets?
eg. vim get 80% of the screen, python get 20
I tried both ctrl b ctrl j but that does nothing
and when I use ctrl b :resize pane XX I get adjustment invalid error
ahh, XX is the number of cells

Q: Can't hear anything from Skype and nobody can hear me

ToroidalI am using Skype version 4.3.0.37-1 on Ubuntu 14.10, and I am not able to hear anyone, and neither are they able to hear me through Skype. I had a look at the answer to this question, but it did not help, and I still have not been able to find a fix for this: Can't hear people on skype I also do...

@Mateo Sadly, no.

Hello
Hey
Anyone
I have encountered 'E: Internal Error, No file name for libc6' error while running upgrade
sudo dpkg -r --force-depends libc6:i386

8:07 PM
@NathanOsman that looks... painful.

And it crashed completely
Is there any way to bring it back
?
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
@hbdgaf
@ByteCommander
Anyone

I haven't used 12.04 in ages. I stick with latest LTS to avoid oddities like that.

@VinuKevy ah man, going to make me dig up my don't upgrade libc6 psa
Nov 4 '13 at 18:23, by Mateo
Don't ever try to upgrade libc6....

This libc6 error cropped up 3 times in the last 2 days for varying applications. It just sounds like people trying to run things on distros/revisions that are too old to run what they want to run.

LightDM is so badly messed up. I think I need to delete /etc/lightdm/* and force reinstall the package.

8:16 PM
yeah... try and force it and it will break things

And what are the options now

@VinuKevy back up data first, and I would consider a fresh reinstall, some things you just work into a corner that it is way easer to start new

I'd like to use my system from 'startx' and what would you recommend?
@Mateo

@VinuKevy the way it is messed up currently - or starting new you want to set it up to use startx

8:27 PM

Q: How to fully remove all packages installed by 'gnome-session-fallback'?

ToroidalI mainly use Unity, but I installed gnome with: sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback To test how it was, but then I managed to delete all of my settings for my startup applications, so basically Gnome does not load properly now. @Rinzwind ahhhhh elementary recommends sending their bugs this way as 12.04 questions. makes sense now.

@hbdgaf come again?

@hbdgaf arg...

that should be hammered out

I couldn't do anything in terminal. It shows some list of 'bin/bash' kinda error @Mateo

8:34 PM
If you read this elementary.io/answers/no-forum-is-nuts-1 it says "UF/AU is great to ask 12.04 questions - since that's what we use as a back-end anyway"

@VinuKevy oh, then yeah that is bad ...

@Rinzwind oops they just said UF no AU. doesn't seem to change the behaviour though.

@hbdgaf yeah I was glaring at the page looking for au

the mentality is still there though. "we won't handle our own bugs. if it doesn't work, hammer the people that use the underlying distro"

13 more <3 let's hope all the mods are sleeping >:D

8:37 PM
^^ did my part

I followed askubuntu.com/questions/266450/… actually and that made things worse @Mateo

@VinuKevy yeah, I just down-voted that answer

@Rinzwind: Share some with me :D

@heemayl i did!

@Rinzwind: Thanks.. :D

man man man
@heemayl wait share where? I upvoted a comment from you :=D

@Rinzwind: :) I wonder if all mods are actually sleeping :D ..its been there like 45 mins

@heemayl I need 13 more D:

I've been using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for the past years without upgrade. And upgrade made things worse. @Mateo

Q: rkhunter remove common warnings

Q: There isn't a more responsable moderator on AskUbuntu? Just Mitch?

user51649Tried to solve a problem I had with my Ubuntu based OS and Wine, but Mitch pretending is some sort of god decided to put it on hold and close it after I hurt his feelings, maybe. This problem is even more Ubuntu related because it's targeting the Ubuntu forum. Mitch is the only moderator over he...

BBC2 went ballistic this week regarding the solar eclipse _O_
they had a week of a program called "stargazing live" and had people search for things in the sky :D
@Toroidal TS openend topic. Mitch closed it. TS went ballistic

user136984
What was the topic?

@Toroidal his elementary os question got closed... that is all

9:12 PM
I butted in with a very delicate reply that I believe TS is wrong
@Toroidal I posted the link in my answer ;)
TS did not even bother including it in his rant
And more importantly: he does not accept Mitch as being God.

mitch even gave a helpful link that would probably help him anyway

user136984
Well, he's posted an answer it seems to his question.

user136984
Oh wait, it's old... :D

heck Mitch even included a link to a how to in a comment when he closed it

9:23 PM
hey guys in order to install patheon DE on 14.04 i need this:3.12.2-0ubuntu1~trusty1
how to install it?

@Seth >:D

So yes, we do expect you to read to participate here.

@edwardtorvalds you are missing something. did you mean gtk+3.12.2-0ubuntu1~trusty1 ?

yes
its needed to install pantheon DE

@Mateo wont fly in Europe. Vendor lock-in by a software manufacturor is not permitted. Only will work if the also make and sell their own machines with W10 on it. (like apple does)

9:26 PM
@Rinzwind any idea?

@edwardtorvalds nope. you are missing something in front of the 3.12.2-0ubuntu1~trusty1 :-) what is it?

yes it is gtk+3.12.2-0ubuntu1~trusty1

yes
@Rinzwind yes that one but how to install it

it is here (2nd page): https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/ubuntu/gnome3-staging/+index?field.series_filter=trusty&batch=75&memo=75&start=75
But do read the warning

9:34 PM
k thx

:)
time for me to go. bb2m :-)

10:16 PM
Time to start deleting config files in my home directory.
This is horribly annoying. Nothing is working properly.

@NathanOsman i have just installed pantheon desktop but not able to select it on login

10:38 PM
Argh, I still can't get this theme to look right.

10:50 PM
I can't select Ubuntu Bold...

11:14 PM
I may have to do a reinstall.
Definitely not cool.

:/

I wonder if dpkg-reconfigure on every installed package would work...

@edwardtorvalds what happens if you do - sudo apt-get install slingshot-launcher gala

@Mateo
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gala : Depends: libgala0 (= 0.2.0~r457+pkg31~ubuntu0.3.1) but it is not going to be installed

11:30 PM
it's too far behind then...

then what to do?
@Mateo note: I am using sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:elementary-os/testing, sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:versable/elementary-tweaks-isis and sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:elementary-os/daily. btw i just installed pantheon DE

nothing to do - purge the ppa - or try and go down the rabbit hole installing everyting it says depends for...
@edwardtorvalds it might be made for 12.04, what version are you on?

going down the rabbit hole does not help, the hole gets bigger and bigger the more you go down
I am on Ubuntu 14.04

exactly

(its not for 12 because it is said that it worked for 14)

11:35 PM
it is a "daily" testing ppa, so it's bound to be broke...

what to do now?

5 mins ago, by Mateo
nothing to do - purge the ppa - or try and go down the rabbit hole installing everyting it says depends for...

Takes a deep breath. Oh boy. That question needs help.

11:45 PM
@edwardtorvalds usually good reasons, but you could try installing it with apt-get if you wanted - it could go wrong though

There, that's better.

11:58 PM
Almost done reconfiguring all of the packages.
