12:00 AM
Alright. Reboot time. I hope I return.
\o/
Yay, everything seems to be working again.

12:14 AM
"kubuntu-desktop" is the package I installed, but I'm not 100% sure it is the right package to report against. When using Firefox or Thunderbird in Gnome's Unity desktop after having used KDE4 once, the fonts in (at least) these two applications are messed up and cannot be restored with Gnome configuration tools (including MyUnity, "extended settings" and the like). See attached screenshots. I tried removing Firefox's profile (~/.mozilla) which didn't help. I removed ~/.kde, ~/.kderc, ~/.gtkrc-2.0-kde4, .compiz, .dconf, .gnome2*, and almost everything else, and it didn't help. Only after removing *all* hidden directories and files - and thus restoring Gnome font settings to the defaults too - did Thunderbird and Firefox regain the ability to correctly display the fonts in use. Note that the actual font which Firefox used for its UI *did* change when I changed the font in the Gnome settings tool. Only it looked totally ugly (without hinting?). I would expect KDE4 not to touch Gno
kubuntu-kde4-meta (Ubuntu)
Undecided / Confirmed
Well, almost everything.
...and fixed.
What a relief. Now I don't have to do a reinstall. Next time I want to try Kubuntu or something, I'll fire up a VM.

12:29 AM
;) yeah, that is a good way to go for other desktops

12:57 AM
@NathanOsman That really surprises me. I guess it shouldn't, but it does.

hm, I do remember having to fix font hinting for firefox for my desktop a while back, was using kubuntu and ubuntu

A: The letter i is not displayed properly.

terdonTurns out Mateo was spot on. The issue was fixed by adding this to my ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf file (not ~/fonts.conf, when that file was created, running fc-list returned an error message telling me that I should switch to the one in ~/.config because ~/.fonts.conf is deprecated): <match...

;) Note, Chrome/ium users aren't able to reproduce, because it doesn't respect the user settings

lol, yeah...

I guess that was one time Google knew best...

so how are the projects going @hbdgaf still doing ue4 tutorials?

1:07 AM
I'm still playing with that, but I felt unburned out on my other thing with the math. So I'm working on flattening it all in to a database instead of a ton of csv files. All the precomputing is taking a full 1/4 of my HD... So, I may soon be trying to run it on a pi with a dedicated USB hard drive.

oh, cool

Don't know if you saw it, but my performance was suffering earlier, and I found that I was at 96% disk utilization... so, time to definitely do something to free a LOT of space before I keep playing with 3d models.

yeah, it takes quite a bit of resources

Yeah. I'm so glad baobab is a thing.

1:25 AM
I can't get the Ubuntu ARM image to boot in qemu :(
If they made a book documenting all of the qemu command-line flags, it would be thicker than the Oxford dictionary.

Really? It worked for me last time I tried... wait - I was using raspian or arch - not ubuntu arm.
@NathanOsman you sir get a star

Yeah, I've found some tutorials for emulating a first-generation Raspberry Pi.
Just nothing for emulating Ubuntu on a second-gen Raspberry Pi.

yeah, not even a official image yet...

I'ld imagine the pi VM is largely the same. It just got more cores, more usb out/ins, and more ram. The metal is about the same except for some steroids.
Newegg business has them with an order limit of 5 per meatsack.

I saw a tweet that mate was doing a 15.04 image, so that could be promising

1:31 AM
again, still have two months until i'm out of the paying my bills for the year rotation. so, no money to spend. at all.

1:43 AM
I don't even have a job right now, so no upgrades for a while for me either.
That Mac Mini used up my hardware budget for the year :P

Well that's a thing. You have a pledgie or something for nitroshare? You maybe should.

2:10 AM
hey guys is there any kind of auto-suspend in ubuntu for bluetooth devices ? because my bluetooth headphones gets disconnected if kept unused for sometime, i have to reconnect it again (it should be already connect btw)

\o/

3:48 AM
@culturalanomoly You didn't actually explain what your issue was, you just said you had a "networking issue". That isn't very descriptive.

@seth just updated

cool
@culturalanomoly What machine do you have?
This:
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: yes
Seems to indicate that your wireless is disabled via a hardware switch/button.

i have a lenovo X120e

Or perhaps in the BIOS.
Aha.
@culturalanomoly There should be a switch on the machine somewhere for wireless, either a button or a switch.
Does it work in Windows?

i saw that and looked for it. didn't notice a switch. will look it up on the docs where the hard switch is.
i don't have windows installed on it.
booting into windows not an option ...

3:56 AM
@culturalanomoly Try Fn+F5 when the machine is booted.
Is it on right now?

i tried that
no cigar
:/
other function keys work. fn+f5 doesn't
well, i should say, the wifi doesn't respond
which sounds like there's a driver issue ...

Try running sudo rfkill unblock all and paste the output please.

ok
##### rfkill ############################

0: tpacpi_bluetooth_sw: Bluetooth
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: yes
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: yes

Are you just copying from the script?

4:13 AM
>.< power off. unplug. pull your battery. act like you're booting. then start over.

no, didn't just copy from the script
executed the statement you provided
then re-executed the previous script which displays system info dump
hard blocked is still yes
:/
@hbdgaf
@hbdgaf that a joke? :)

it's what fixes my hp dv7

will give it a try

@culturalanomoly Alright :/
I didn't figure it would work but it was worth a try.

i'm back no cigar

4:25 AM
hands @culturalanomoly a cigar
Ok I'm obviously too tired. Off to bed!
Good luck with your question @culturalanomoly. Give me a ring if there's no answer in two days and I'll pop you a bounty.

@seth appreciate the help!

Q: How do I get Ubuntu to use Anaconda's python instead of the standard /usr/lib/python...?

@RPiAwesomeness he fixed the transfer system - now it can transfer extremely large files

@Mateo Oh, awesome :D
So maybe it was NitroShare giving me that issue with the ISO and the .mp4 file

@RPiAwesomeness if you were on .2 it could only use about as much memory you had

:'(
No NitroShare for the Raspberry Pi. Boo.

Oh there will be.
It'll just take more time.
I'm going to try to build for both RPi 1 and 2.
The RPi 2 will be easier though since it runs Ubuntu.
The ARM build of Ubuntu doesn't run on ARMv6 CPUs though, so I'll have to get Qt 5 compiled on Raspbian for the RPi 1.

Oogh
That'll be fun :P
Cross-Compiling much? ;)

Cross-compiling is even harder :P

8:37 PM
I'll probably end up compiling Qt either with an emulator or with the RPi itself.

BTW, do you have something simple I could help with on NitroShare that would give me a project to learn C++ on? Or a place/book to learn C++?

Hmmm...

Yo yos are fun, if you know how to use them. I sorta do, but not real.
@Toroidal Soup man?

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness Is that not what you are meant to say...?

@Toroidal No ;)

user136984

'Sup is short for "What's up man"

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness No... I prefer soup... :P ;D

This lav mic is surprisingly good for the $30 price. I had it like arms-length from me by accident and hit record (forgot to put it on :P) and it picked me up just fine.
I need to get a headphone/mic amp...
Voice-over recording almost complete!
Just gotta get ~2-3 more shots when I get home and then I can edit it all together!

user136984
What are the most common places for software to be installed in on Ubuntu? If they were not installed by your package manager, but came as an .sh installation file or something of the sort? I know that most likely will be /home, but what about /root and the others?

9:49 PM
Any vi people around?

user136984
@NathanOsman Why?

Never mind, I figured it out.
I needed to configure apt in my chroot but it didn't have nano.
qemu syscall emulation is pretty neat, BTW.

@Toroidal /opt ?
otherwise it could be in many pieces depending on what you are looking for - configuration file, the binary, ect.

Software from the archives will install in /usr. Software compiled yourself should go in /usr/local. Packages outside the archives should install in /opt as @Mateo said.
If the software doesn't need root privileges, then ~/.local works too.

How do you use sed to remove a specific string in a file if that string contains a "/"?

user136984
This is what my code looks like: sed -i '/text/text/d' "/path/to/file.extension"

user136984
But all I am getting is this when I run that:

user136984
sed: -e expression #1, char 24: extra characters after command

user136984
So how can I fix this? As obviously the extra "/" in the string is confusing it.
