@Toroidal Just boot a live session and check the defaults there.

user136984
@terdon Ok, but what about applications which added themselves there when I installed them? Is there anyway of telling which ones may have tried to add themselves on their install?

user136984
:)

12:37 PM
Oh, and please don't tag with the version number unless you know your question only applies to that one. See here for example: meta.askubuntu.com/q/7245/85695
@Toroidal I doubt it. You're talking about your own user's autostart right? You probably added them manually yourself. Others might have had a GUI option somewhere but that won't be traceable.

user136984
@terdon Is there no log which states which were deleted?

@Toroidal No. All you deleted were files and there's no log of that.

Q: Question starts out being about Ubuntu but ends up being about Debian

Elder GeekThe following question starts out being about Ubuntu but ends with a solution about Debian. USB sticks not accessible & system hangs at shut-down: related older hardware? My gut reaction is off-topic as unlikely to help future users. Thoughts?

user136984
Is there an IDE which supports bash scripts?

sublime?

@Toroidal Where do I have to leave my mail address to get such an amount of animals??? I only get GMX spam...

@Toroidal even notepad would "support" writing bash scripts, are you looking for completion highlighting and auto indenting?

user136984
@Mateo Well, I've already got that with nano, but I was looking more for something which would give me a better idea of what I was doing wrong, as it is getting very frustrating! So basically something which could tell me when I write a bit of invalid code, or at least tell me which "fi", closes which "if"! :D

3:36 PM
try looking at sublime

user136984
@Mateo Ok, thanks! :)

Code::Blocks is a pretty versatile IDE, but I am not sure whether it also supports Bash...

look what it gave my just by typing "if" then enter:

How would you use a if statement in bash to search for file names beginning with a certain string?

user136984
As I have been trying to use:

user136984
if [ ls "$nbh" | grep "netbeans-" ]; then

user136984
#code

user136984
fi

user136984
But it's not going very well.

My library's internet:
I wish I had internet like this :(

how bout this:

O.O lucky duck.
That yours?
I'll be getting somewhere between 2-3 & 3-5 Mbps down & 1-1.5 Mbps up

user136984
How would you use a if statement in bash to search for file names beginning with a certain string?
As I have been trying to use:
if [ ls "$nbh" | grep "netbeans-" ]; then

fi
But it's not going very well.

5:14 PM
@Toroidal check the exit status of the command
then you can use check if it was successful or not and use a simple check to see if it equals 0

user136984
@Mateo How exactly do I do that in a script?

user136984
Do I just run the command and then do an if statement which checks "if [ $? -ne 0 ]; then", or something?

@RPiAwesomeness Why do you have higher upspeed than downspeed?? That's strange to me...

@ByteCommander shared for a library, so they probably limit each computer
ls | grep "netbeans"
    if [[ `echo $?` == 0 ]]; then
            echo "yah beans"
    else echo "nah beans"
    fi
@Toroidal ^^

@ByteCommander It's not mine - it's the library. So, I'm guessing that other people are using the wifi and affecting the download speed but not the upload

user136984
5:31 PM
@Mateo So 0 = true, and 1 = false?

commands report exit codes, so more like - success and general error (plus there are more codes)

user136984
Ok, but why when I run this command in the script "ls "$nbh" | grep "netbeans-"", do I get this output: "ls: cannot access : No such file or directory"?

user136984
(Before that command comes "set $nbh = "~/"".)

user136984
But when I run basically the same thing just in Terminal normally, it finds something?

you forgot to tell the script it should use bash? she-bang 1st line?

user136984
5:38 PM
The first line of the script it...:

user136984
#!/bin/bash

user136984
And almost everything else in the script runs fine.

user136984
As this is just a small part of a larger script.

then I do not know what your problem is :=D

user136984
But all the bits before this work fine.

user136984
5:39 PM
Ok

hrm

user136984
Yes, I have been battling with that just now...

you forgot to EXPORT

Anyone know of a good, $500 or less preferably, laptop?

user136984
@Rinzwind Export what? (Sorry, new to bash scripts. ;) )

5:41 PM
@Toroidal no mateo forgot to export :=D

user136984
@Rinzwind Oh, phew! :D I started question myself there! :D

the 15.04 update killed my video... smplayer dead and totem dead :(
had to purge both and reinstall them :(

@Toroidal so show the rest of the script, we can't tell what is going on with the other parts

I'm gonna do that too, but my mom needs one :P

@RPiAwesomeness it was the only one with 2 bays ;-) so I could put in an ssd as boot disk
pity it has a problem ALL acers have: lousy hinges
@RPiAwesomeness if it is for your mom go for a toshiba. cheap but also cheap :-)

I wish I had the money for a good laptop :P

lol
time for some food. bbl

5:49 PM
@Toroidal doesn’t look like it got set

user136984
@Mateo What doesn't look like it was set?

what does this part do - if grep -q "netbeanshome=''" "/etc/snbjdkhome.conf"; then

user136984
@Mateo That should check if this file "/etc/snbjdkhome.conf" contains this exact string somewhere in it "netbeanshome=''".

user136984
That part of the code is not complete yet.

@RPiAwesomeness Mine does not look better. I got it 2nd hand from my uncle. No idea how old it is, a sticker says "Designed for XP - Vista capable" so I think it could be about 10 years?

user136984
5:54 PM
I am going to get an elif statement before I use the else statement to check for other options in the ''.

@Toroidal ah, so if it dosn't work yet, it cant set the variable with set

@RPiAwesomeness Intel Centrino Duo with 2x 2GHz cores, 2GB DDR2 RAM and tiny 60GB HDD on which I dual-boot Ubuntu and Kali... And not to forget the fried nVidia G72M (GeForce Go 7400) chip that feels like a kick in the ass!
You are not the only one suffering from parents with low budget for IT things... :P

user136984
@Mateo How do I get it so that it will set $nbh to equal the value in the '' after the "netbeanshome=" in the config file?

user136984
elif grep -q "netbeanshome=" "/etc/snbjdkhome.conf"; then
set $nbh =

user136984
What should I get it to equal, and how should I approach that?

user136984
6:02 PM
:)

*accidentally drops /dev/urandom into the chat*

@Toroidal I'm not even sure what you want to do with that bit

user136984
@Mateo I have got a config file and I want it to be so that in that config file if you set "netbeanshome" to equal a custom value (which will be the path to your netbeans folder if it is not in your home area) for the script to make $nbh equal to that.

user136984
I am aiming to automate a task which requires the editing of a file in netbeans.

user136984
So this part of the scripts locates the netbeans installation folder.

6:06 PM
so this command finds that value?

user136984
@Mateo This part of the script just checks if you have entered a custom value in the config file, and if not then assumes that the netbeans installation folder is in your home area.

user136984
Well, that's what I am trying to get it to do anyway...

I think it is doing something to the opposite effect

user136984
This is basically my first bash script so I wouldn't be surprised if I had done something completely wrong... :(

user136984
@Mateo So what exactly do you mean? And how could I get it to do what I want?

user136984
6:11 PM
:)

ok so what do you expect "/etc/snbjdkhome.conf" to look like

user136984
@Mateo When you say look like, do you mean the contents? :)

yep
so a test file

Evening!

would it be "netbeanshome='/usr/bin/whatever'"

6:13 PM
@Fabby That is very weird. Can you copy-and-paste the URL you are using?

Q: Convert a PDF/Image score into a programmatic format

Ionică BizăuHaving a music score in PDF or image, format, containing a melody, what tools are available to convert it into a programmatic format (JSON or so)? The tools should: work offline (installable on a local machine) have a library API or being accessible with a bash command (e.g. foo score.pdf -o m...

^ Maybe you have some ideas

hi @IonicăBizău

user136984
@Mateo Well, unless you make changes to it, it will just read:

user136984
#If not in the /home directory, then please specify where the netbeans-<versionnumber> folder is located
#Default value "/home"
netbeanshome=''

user136984
And if your netbeans installation folder is not located in your home directory, then you specify it here.

6:16 PM
ah, so you want to match exactly "netbeanshome=''" as being true

@Mateo *suggests the use of ` to make codeformatting==true for chat display*

user136984
@Mateo Yes, if they haven't set a custom value I want it to just assume the default, and if they have set a custom value I want it to use that custom value.

the second part will be harder
lets work on it being true first

user136984
Ok

user136984
:)

6:19 PM
Email is evil. Many of the features are not standardized, almost guaranteeing that the messages will display incorrectly when customers open them.
It's one of those things I have to just tolerate, I guess.

plus I disable images by default ;)
I think I even have, or used to have yahoo run in plain text mode

user136984
@Mateo Yes, and that's what I'm currently stuck with... :(

@Mateo @Toroidal why rely on external env vars anyways? Wouldn't it be more feasible to pass it in as an argument to the script?

@Mateo Usually that just disables remote images though. It's possible to include an image "inline" in the email.

user136984
@ThomasW. No, I decided not to do that. As the point of the script would be so that you wouldn't have to enter all of that information in most instances.

6:31 PM
@NathanOsman yeah, I don't like those, don't open anything with attachments ;) - in fact don't open any unknown e-mail

No, not attachments. The image data is literally inline in the HTML.
I know what you're referring to, but this is different.

that is terrible than

Why is it terrible?

I just want text in my e-mail...

If I were to use it to display the company logo in the corner, I don't think that's a problem, is it?

6:33 PM
@Toroidal they wouldn't have to - if they have the variable set they can provide $VARIABLE instead of the full path
@Toroidal thereby allowing the argument to end up as null or the path

@NathanOsman maybe it's just me...

such that /path/to/script $IAMATEAPOT would pass $IAMATEAPOT's contents as the argument (if I remember my generic shell scripting)

My emails are sent multipart, so if you only want text, you can probably just enable a setting in your email client that displays the text version.

@Toroidal Therefore, the user could do something like I did here...
% export TESTPATH="/home/teward/testing123/
% ./testscript.sh test test $TESTPATH foo
1: test
2: test
3: /home/teward/testing123/
*: test test /home/teward/testing123/ foo
(pbin.dark-net.net/view/raw/3ef049ad is the script i used for that)
@Toroidal whereby they replace $TESTPATH with the environment variable they already set, i.e. $netbeanshome
solves the "If it's not set" and "If it's set" issues by not having to rely on the env vars existing in the first place
(the test script was my way of showing how it could be provided as an argument without the full path)

@Mateo ^--- thoughts?
(The logo is inline.)

6:48 PM
looks good, and won't look terrible if your mail blocks images

Apart from the link color, it displays fine in Gmail for Android.

\o/ for @NathanOsman - it's starting to look like an actual product well it was looking good, but now it has a website, a mailbox/list, et al

:)
Unfortunately, the color is all wonky in outlook.com :(
See why I hate email?

So, watching "The Last Man on Earth" is proving to be hilarious.

ah, yeah. I caught that one too
really liked the castaway references

6:58 PM
I need to gimp a rubber ducky in place of the volleyball on that scene. It could be a programmer meme.

Hah. Yeah.
So, I got a Zombie Army promo trailer as my ad on that one. First thought - well that's an interesting piece of marketing. Who wouldn't sign up to nuke zombie hitler?

GuySoftI am following this manual on how to mount an nfs port over an ssh tunnel: https://blogs.oracle.com/shepler/entry/tunneling_nfs_traffic_via_ssh I need this because I want to mount an nfs partition from a machine that is behind a router with no static IP. Yeah, well. You know what I meant. It was a good sell. It's somewhat different than trying to sell simcity.

7:10 PM
Hey guys
I have a question about screen I am trying to create a new window, aka screen
the man pages say I must use C-a C-c
I tried many variations of this command, none of which worked

@Mateo Here

@Vader The 'screen' command on its own should create a new screen.

well what about the other commands, like see window list
C-a "

Does anyone has a solution for this libQt5Help.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory?

That doesn't work either

7:15 PM
@Vader Also, when it says C-a, I'm pretty sure that means press Ctrl+A.
Though that's an unusual format for printing keystrokes. Usually the Control key is represented with a ^.

on my box it's just a link to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQt5Help.so
...

@IonicăBizău That is a question like "I can't find my glasses. Where have I put them=?". You have to write more details to let us know what is going on... ;-)

@ByteCommander The missing glasses were libqt5help5. :D Thanks anyway.

And WHAT cant find it for example?

@NathanOsman thanks, ctrl a works
I see the power of the ctrl a now
I can have stuff running in a screen and still be able to throw commands at it
quite nifty

7:27 PM
screen vs tmux + i3 for the ring to rule them all. i liked the concept of i3, but it didn't really fit as well in my usage-flow as i had hoped it would. not the fault of i3, more my fault for using gui stuff too much.

screen would be useful for servers

Well, for a quick-and-dirty hack, yes.
For something more long-term, I'd look into writing a Systemd script.

Well one step at a time

@Vader we use screen a lot for server side processes
screen -kmS {name}
from the top of my head

I guess you could also log into the server more than once, each in a new shell

7:34 PM
and
screen -dr {name}
to connect

I used Ctrl + A -> " to view windows
and I created them with screen -t some_name
that way I know what I am switcing to
still trying to find a way to rename them though, without creating a new one.
Ctrl a -> Shift a, does the trick

7:50 PM
#2 reason why I don't use Windows: NO BLOODY INFORMATION IS EVER GIVEN ABOUT ERRORS.

[cough] event log viewer [cough]

[cough] always turns that off in windows [cough]

@RPiAwesomeness What about those nice fancy BSODs that flash away after a second before you can realize there was an error or even read and write down the 32bit hexadecimal error code and the AX BX CX DX CPU register values for googling them... Those are the perfect example for user-friendly error-handling!
That one is even better:

8:06 PM
Do people actually get BSODs I have been using win 7 for about 5 years, and have never gotten a single one

> Bluescreen has performed an illegal operation. Bluescreen must be closed!

wat?

^ is Windows logic...

@ByteCommander Oh, those are fun...
@NathanOsman o.O That's a thing?
Shows how much I know about Windows.

For me, Eventlog is always full of DCOM errors and other unimportant stuff, but whenever I had a crash, it was empty (nothing new)!
But I have to tell that Ubuntu is not much better...

8:11 PM
Good song for those who like Dubstep

I get at least 3 windows at every startup with xfce as DE about some system problems...
I think I have to work on them as soon as I am finished with my A-level exams in 8 days...

@ByteCommander I've had those to with Unity.
It seems to be a bug/thingy in the error reporter in Ubuntu - it gets caught in some form of error loop thing and then constantly pings you.
Rather annoying.

No, I think it has to do with Unity-greeter and Unity settings-daemon not getting along with xfce... But not sure about that yet
Oh. That one looks...
... like a reasonable excuse for never ever mounting a plane again.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!
Stupid letter K

"singe" is monkey in french? Did not know that

8:17 PM
Yup.
Stupid membrane keyboard :P

@ByteCommander obviously shopped though.

Friggin star spam.
@Vader Quite
I'm much better at translating French to English than typing out English to French :P

@Vader Might be. I did not zoom in, but I hope so!!!
;D

@ByteCommander No worries, I am very sure it is, look the left most screen
But it is still dangerous
whatever they use could still fail

Yup. Right around the flight stick.

8:20 PM
yeah, other spots too, but that one is a dead giveaway
Who knows, maybe planes use Rasberry PIs
Although they are probably not powerful enough

What about that one? Real or fake?

Oh. Fake. For sure.

I am no expert

Look at the camera phones
No hint of blue on them.

But real unless they just loaded a .jpeg

8:22 PM
And nobody's reacting in the slightest

well it's a photo
If it is photoshop it is quite good

Well, maybe for sure. But my best guess would be that it has been photoshopped.

I think you can see clone brush mess-ups around the third person

@Mateo And that. It's a bit blurry around the players in a few spots

yeah, maybe he is looking at a picture he took 2 min ago

8:24 PM
@Vader unlikely

@Vader We flew to the moon with less than a pi, so why not over the pacific? (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Guidance_Computer - It eas controlled by a 2MHz CPU and 4kB RAM machine...)

I think it's part of their act, real either way

Why does MS not include some really useful information into their BSoDs, like the following advice:

Eh. Who cares.

8:27 PM
^ not exactly the reaction I imagined... :-/

user136984
Why you people drinking beer here without me?!

user136984
Or is that not beer?

user136984
It looks like beer! :D

It is. But I am not drinking it, I'm just looking at it! ;D

user136984
@ByteCommander Why look at it, when you can have it?! :D :P

8:35 PM
@Toroidal I can grab into my screen and drink LCD beer? That's new to me...

user136984
@ByteCommander If you close your eyes and concentrate on the image of the beer coming out of the computer and onto the place you want it to be on, if you are the chosen one, when you open your eyes it will be their in front of you! :P ;D

@Toroidal I would rather imagine a bar of chocolate then. To be honest, that is the only kind of "percentage" I like...

9:20 PM
@NathanOsman Would that be a case to use Nitroshare?

captainjamieSomeone has left their hard drive at mine and it's a windows one (NTFS). They want to be able to access their files remotely, what's an easy way to do this? (Also, could you explain it to me like I'm 5? I've never been able to get file sharing working properly) Thanks for your help.

If yes, please write it yourself, as I never did anything either with Nitroshare nor with file sharing in general...

@ByteCommander Dude, that sounds almost exactly like mine xD Specs and sticker. Though I'm gonna remove that sticker and leave it with just the Powered by Ubuntu one from System76
@Mateo It's coming...depending on how much noise around the house there is today I might be able to get the audio recording done. Then I've got to edit the actual video.

cool

Hopefully by this weekend...but no promises. For whatever reason, I feel like there just isn't enough content in it :P
Maybe it's just 'cause I haven't got all of the audio yet. Who knows.

@Mateo You know whether the Q above is a Nitroshare case?

@ByteCommander Not yet.
It only works on a local network for the time being.

9:26 PM
@ByteCommander nitroshare is local network, so not really

Basically, all it is right now is boot times for Pi 1 vs Pi 2 on a class 4 and then a class 10 MicroSD card :P

okay. thanks. I did not know that.

I was going to include startup times for stuff like LibreOffice, GIMP, and MC:Pi, but I was gonna do another video basically asking "Will it Run..." on the Pi 2 and include those in there. Maybe I can include those times in this video and then do different stuff in that.

Going to bed now (theoretically)... See you all tomorrow! o/

Q: Is there a command that outputs ONLY the packages explicitly installed by the user? (ubuntu/debian)

warsongI have tried searching for this but there seems to be no command that can output a list of packages (ideally in Ubuntu) that I have installed, not including any dependencies.

9:40 PM
@RPiAwesomeness gimp worked quite well

Q: Support Ubuntu, quit Windows

SOORAJ SWhen I went to purchase a Laptop, I found that most comes with an installed Windows. I think this is a kind of business trick that Windows is using to keep its popularity. People are forced to pay for Windows no matter whether you like it or not. As a community which strongly support Ubuntu, do w...

[ SmokeDetector ] Blacklisted website: I cant install skype on my ubuntu 12.04 LTS by Diaa Attia on askubuntu.com

Currently using an old Dell QuietKey PS2 keyboard 'cause my brother wants to play Minecraft on my Raspberry Pi and the other USB (Bluetooth) keyboard we have isn't working :P. Gosh this thing is mushy.

I'm testing email rendering in different clients and one of those was Yahoo! Mail. I signed into my old account to test it out and quickly remembered why I don't use Yahoo! Mail at all.
Those ads make my eyes bleed.

yeah, I install a plugin for that...
and they stopped letting you delete spam automatically :(

10:58 PM
@NathanOsman Yeah. Yahoo's web client is just gosh awful

Anyone want to test receiving one of the emails?

@NathanOsman sure you can send me one over ;)

@Mateo: I don't think I have your email address... if you want to send it to me, you can just shoot a blank email to nathan@nitroshare.net.
I thought I had it but I can't seem to find it :P
Oh, hang on. I found it.
Email has been sent.

looks good in inbox

I sent it also to the other email you gave me.

11:08 PM
did you decide against the logo?

It was getting blocked by some clients.

ah

Hmm... Yahoo! seems to be blocking mail from my server's IP address.
That is extremely weird.

mmm... yeah another strike against yahoo.
I'm about ready to just start giving everything my gmail address

It worked sending from @quickmediasolutions.com.
I guess nitroshare.net was a really bad domain back in the day :P

11:13 PM
oh, maybe a block then, yikes

Heh, seems like the other one retried and finally went through.
Have you received two in your Yahoo! account?

yep

Heh... Yahoo is getting added to my "unreliable delivery" list.

yeah, Ive noticed that there are things that get a great delay through it

Alright, time to begin sending the emails out then.

11:22 PM
@TheX Are you around?
Obviously not in chat, but I'm hoping he's on SE
Nope. Never mind :P
Crap

There. Emails have been sent. By hand.

That moment in Minecraft when you accidentally make two diamond leggings when you only meant to make one
#Facepalm
Eh. Could be worse. Diamond Hoe for instance.

A diamond hoe uses less diamond..
but I suppose it is inherently useless.

Exactly.
Double Diamond pants isn't too bad, you can always use them

11:39 PM
@RPiAwesomeness just for a moment, getting ready to go for a walk...
@RPiAwesomeness just through it in a chest, someone will use it...
@RPiAwesomeness not sure what to tell you about your diamonds though...

@TheX That's not actually what I was pinging out about, I'm fine with having 2 pair of diamond leggings.
I was stuck down in my mine without a pickaxe, but I got my way out :)
I struck the motherload cave, got 23 diamonds in one go I think? Plus a crap ton of iron, gold, and redstone.
