Q: How do I change the keyboard map for Backspace?

ButterJonesMy keyboard doesn't have a delete key. I want to be able to use "delete" when I press Shift+Backspace. How would I go about doing this? And then how would I then use this edited layout? Thanks.

@cl-netbox not yet sorry :(

@hg8 Without modifications in my system, Backspace and Shift-Backspace is the same

@hg8 no sorry have no experience with this :(

hg8
hum ok
i don't understand what is wrong then

@hg8 The xte command is ok, try this
xte 'key f' 'key o' 'key o' 'key Left' 'key Delete'

hg8
9:03 AM
@A.B. o_o
@A.B. It's working.....
but it does not print foo

@hg8 =) It was only an example to demonstrate, that xte works with key Delete
That was not the solution for your problem

hg8
@A.B. no it's not working in my virtual machine
@A.B. is it needed to restart xbindkey after making change to the config file ?

@hg8 yes
killall xbindkeys; xbindkeys -f ~/.xbindkeysrc

hg8
Thanks.
It is not working. I am pretty sure it's a problem with my vm

Hi!

hg8
Hello @Helio

Hello @Helio

Can I use pgrep to replace this stodgy command?
ps aux | grep ssh | grep net | awk '{ print $2 }'
I've tried this, but it doesn't work:
pgrep '(.*ssh.*net.*|.*net.*ssh.*)'
I'm so lazy and don't want to download the opensshd sources, patch and compile.
Only trying to add a infinite loop to catch connections and strace them.
[:evil:]
@blade19899: Hi!

@Helio Herro! :D

@blade19899: Didn't understood, Is the r for typographical differentiation from i and l?
Is to not say @Hello Helio instead of @Helio Hello?
;-p

10:48 AM
@Helio Asian people usually say "herro" instead of "hello". I say herro, to give people a hint, that I might be asian.... Which I totally am... really... ;D

@blade19899: I didn't knew it. These are subtle language differences... I don't hear asians talking English every day. ;-)

> "Mozilla intends to remove support for most NPAPI plugins in Firefox by the end of 2016." - NPAPI Plugins in Firefox | Future Releases
4
@Helio Just to let you know, I'm not Asian...
@Oli Thats what you notice from that link xD

\o/

@blade19899: I don't said for you, I figured it was a joke. I say that here in Spain, I never heard any asian speaking English. And less saying Herro. (^_^)

@Helio Ah okay.

10:55 AM
@Mateo: Hi!

Yo
Er auto correct... On phone

@Mateo: So you phone autocorrects in Spanish?
@Mateo: What about Google keyboard with dual input method?
;-)

I was trying to type yo it typed you...

@Mateo: My fingers are for hardware keyboards.

my fnigers are mdae fro voice recognitoin

11:09 AM
@Takkat: Do you make voice recognition with your fingers?
0.o

lol - no, but my fingers never get the keys right... so they are not made for typing at all.

@Takkat I can't figure how to use the comand-line with voice recognition.

I think voice recognition is pretty bad for the command-line.
Imagine a command with many parameters and special chars.
Like a line of AWK or SED, or just a simple regex!

@ByteCommander: Even a parameter expansion :-/

11:30 AM
@ByteCommander or someone says "can I remove slash by force" to someone and it interpretes it as "rm -rf /" :-D

That would be a very broad interpretation...
However, as we all know about --no-preserve-root...

@ByteCommander: What about: should do halt?

Can a mod unfreeze this room chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/23996 ?

@blade19899 there you go

@blade19899 Why do you want to thaw my old discussion room (that lead to nothing yet)?

11:50 AM
@fossfreedom Thanks.
@ByteCommander Gonna finish reading all of it, and throw in my two cents!

For reading, you would not have had to thaw it. And I doubt somebody will really read it any more...
Besides that, there is a lot of crap in it... :(

@ByteCommander I'll be the judge of that! ;)

But feel free to do whatever you like! ;)

@ByteCommander After reading gonna comment some stuff of my own!

Erm... I am getting double-pinged???
Everytime you ping/reply to me, I hear two beeps.

11:53 AM
@ByteCommander Hhhmmm :/ Odd. Bug?

@ByteCommander self-ping test
What about a ping and not a reply?

I was thinking of making an "ubuntuonair" kinda thing only about philosophy? PhilosophyOnAir? Would any on join that?
Video chat between multiple people.

I can't videochat... So you don't have to ask me.

I think Google Also had a comment box available while Multiple chatting ;D

... the famous StarOS hit me with a sensational proposal on the question -> askubuntu.com/questions/683341/… ... cheers ! =)

11:59 AM
>.<
@fossfreedom How to react on that comment (link 2 posts above)?

@ByteCommander its an unusual request for more info. Leave it for the OP to decide if they wish to give further info in that way.

Isn't that against the SE principles?

which principles were you thinking of?

I think a (long) video of the error will not be helpful for future readers. It would be a pain to watch that if one's looking for a similar problem...
And wouldn't that be too focused anyway? Q&As should be answered in a way as general as possible I thought.
Maybe it's just me though... :p

the video is just one way to get more info. Some users are not technical enough to grab screenshots/copy paste/interrogate logs etc. We could always just summarise in the question what the video is demonstrating
yes - Q's should be "useful" - but that is a very flexible term. As long as there is an answer that Q could be "useful" to someone else in the future

12:07 PM
But if they're unable to take screenshots - how would you expect them to take a video then!?!?

When focusing on the fact that a NEW user asks the suggestion is "misleading" (in good words). This helps nobody !
Besides it shows the knowledge level this guy has ...

asking someone to grab their phone and take a video is one way. Commenting on a question and talking them through finding out information is another.
Once we have an accepted answer we can tidy up comments like this.

Okay, so the tldr: Let it be.

@fossfreedom Video(s) will need to be posted on YouTube(or other). Thats a round of create account, upload video, post the link here. One could just post the short version of the error in hit Question.

@Byte yep. always trust what The Beatles say...

12:10 PM
That again made 2 ping sounds!
Why?

your are correct - just let it be ... funny comment anyway ... =)

@Byte no idea - have you tried to refresh/stop and start your browser?

@ByteCommander @cl-netbox o/

@Ravan hello my friend ! :)

Hi.
May someone ping me now, please?

12:12 PM
@ByteCommander Ola.

One sound.
And now again, please?

@ByteCommander ping

Two sounds! o.O
Why do I hear two sounds when I have chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/23996/… as open tab next to this one?

Can someone please clarify my doubt..please
"If .iso md5 match with original md5 then it is bootable......If .iso is bootable then its md5 sum should match with original"
Is my statement correct?

I have e.g. chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/22119/se-chess as pinned tab open as well and that does not create double-pings... :P

12:16 PM
1 min ago, by Ravan
"If .iso md5 match with original md5 then it is bootable......If .iso is bootable then its md5 sum should match with original"

@Ravan md5 match of the downloaded iso image with the one stated on the download page means that you can be 99.999999999999...% sure your image is valid.

viceversa..

You can also modify images and they're still bootable.
That would lead to md5 mismatch, but still bootable iso.
And your valid iso could not boot if written to the device falsely.

@ByteCommander thanks=)

nice ... another gold badge!

12:19 PM
Congratulations (Cliff Richards...)! Which one? :)

great answer. Love those.

I'd still need 27 more votes on this for a great answer badge...

similar Q here - love this answer! askubuntu.com/a/77991/14356

@ByteCommander Apparently I still hadn't upvoted that one :D

Oh, thanks! :)
Now I need only 26 more people.

12:24 PM
@ByteCommander sorry I already upvoted :(

Just made a minor edit. Maybe that will bring it back to the main page and attract some new people...
@cl-netbox No need to be sorry. An upvote is an upvote, whenever it was cast.

@ByteCommander did you upvote my "StarOS" answer ? =)

I think so.

Bye! I'll travel now!

@ByteCommander Thanks ! - I meant the one you discussed with fossfreedom before.

A: Restore Ubuntu using Systemback

RinzwindWithout any form of knowledge about Systemback (had not even heard about it before your question) common sense would be: if Systemback makes those files then Systemback should be used to restore these files. unixmen has a pretty elaborate topic on this it seems and I see 2 things in their images...

1:02 PM
@Rinzwind I love unixmen!

@cl-netbox he, come back =)

1:28 PM
@Rinzwind a little bit =)

@A.B. ... so here I am - back again - no StarOS around ? ... good ... aaah ... =)

=)

1:44 PM
well thing is... so many people create a backup and ONLY start looking at restoring when they need to restore. I consider that behaviour stupid, even moronic.
Heck I would get fired if I told my boss "ehm I do not know how to restore this backup".

@Rinzwind yes =)

@ParanoidPanda an answer for paranoid people ;-)
@Rinzwind because we're old farts that somewhere in our life were not able to restore at least one back-up (or had a dumb customer who couldn't and had to sort it out ourselves)
@Rinzwind and the OP here is such an "dumb customer" ;-) (reading backwards)
Who's the mode that quoted xkcd to me? (and if you want to remain anonymous: You made me :-) )

2:00 PM
Might have been me

@JourneymanGeek Thanks! I think I'm going to review my flags more often now...

@Fabby _O-

He @Fabby =)

I thought only AU mods reviewed AU flags... Does mod work get distributed over the entire SE network?

2:02 PM
what flags?
Naw, I only review flags on my site

@Rinzwind I meant "mod"

I'm a low rep user on AU
0_0

@A.B. o/

Didn't you guys get hit with a big late answers queue?

@Fabby SE Mods can review our flags as well. Other community mods cannot

2:04 PM
@fossfreedom Ah!
@JourneymanGeek yup! nearly gone!

@Fabby o/

@Ravan \o

I was hitting about 100 reviews a day (and there were about 200-300 reviews by other folk) and we're finally at 600 ;p
Got suspended twice for review audits too ;p

Oli
@blade19899 The bigger news there is that Unity working with Mozilla to change how they do things with their NPAPI Unity player. I'm not sure if to interpret that as they'll just be doing more WebGL stuff or if there's a browser-specific (but open) Unity Player replacement, or something else.
Maybe that's not "bigger" news, but it means more to me. Flash is the last proper plugin I use and even that's blocked in most places by default.

2:08 PM
Oli - Phoronix says they are dumping their webplayer and switching wholesale to WebGL

@JourneymanGeek :D Even mods get suspended?
Wow!
I thought you were like gods around here... ;-)

> "Developers behind the Unity Game Engine have announced that they'll be dropping their Web Player support in favor of exporting web content to using open standard APIs with WebGL." - Unity To Abandon Their Web Player In Favor Of WebGL - Phoronix
@fossfreedom @Oli ^ 800 million NPAPi plugins down, only flash to go...

@Fabby: yup
I could unsuspend myself in theory

Oli
@blade19899 Aw, that's a shame. I was hoping for something a little more pro-active that was backwards compatible with the existing web-player exports. Trying to get people to upgrade their Unity version and republish things is harder than you'd hope.

but 1) I had no idea
2) when I worked it out, I decided it was unethical

2:13 PM
ehm is it possible to kill the 15 minute grace period sudo uses so it restarts asking?

Oli
@JourneymanGeek Ethics, schmethics.

you can set that grace period?
@Oli: With great power comes... who're we fooling ;p

Oli
@Rinzwind Yeah, sudo -k or something like that

ah YES that's it

Oli
@JourneymanGeek With great power comes unlimited champagne!

2:14 PM
I don't drink tho ;p

Oli
Eek, that's going to be drowning hazard then :\

@Fabby o/

@JourneymanGeek Aaah, so still god-like powers!

Oli
Wait, what... They have an Ubuntu phone and aren't otherwise Ubuntu users... What on earth?

2:15 PM
@Fabby: somewhat vorlon like powers ;p

@JourneymanGeek If it's possible to surf for pr0n at work, it's allowed in my book!
so if you can unsuspend yourself, you're allowed to! ;-)

@Oli the world is about to end :D

@Fabby: I guess in that respect I'm a bit like sweetheart from skin horse ;p
The rules matter

@Fabby Whut. That is a fun conversation to have with your boss..

@ParanoidPanda there I named you in an answer askubuntu.com/questions/683393/…

2:18 PM
@cl-netbox \o

Oli
We clearly run different ships... Rules and ethics... Next you'll be telling us you don't sacrifice low-rep users to a idol of Jeff Atwood every month.

@Oli that's just an excuse to keep the Q open...

We do?

No Ubuntu here, move along...
@JourneymanGeek :D :D :D

@Oli I do but I send them to John Skeet!

2:19 PM
@JourneymanGeek I'm a rule questioner, not a rule follower...
Do you know the story of the 4 monkeys and the banana?
@blade19899 I actually quoted that to my (female) boss a bit more then 10 years ago...
(she was moaning and bitching about developers having admin rights and messing up their machines)

@A.B. oli stole my comment so I put it at your answer ;-)

@Rinzwind OMG, I'm blind =)

@Fabby Lol. Don't say "... she was moaning..." ;D

@A.B. TS is at fault though. His q is wrong
either he wants just "15" as a time. OR he meant 3 times on the same day on 3 days in each month. The latter is what it is now.

2:26 PM
@blade19899 :D

@Fabby Gota run

@blade19899 bye!

have an extra 30 sec before I have to leave... here I got something for y'all:

@Fabby Indeed. It seemed weird to me that you accepted this edit.

@fossfreedom I am slowly creeping up on you. You need to start answering more questions >:-D

@hg8 Confucius says: "Shit happens!" ;-)
@Rinzwind Stalker!

@Rinzwind that's boring ... coding is more fun!

@fossfreedom maybe =)

Q: A web-based application platform?

MetaWe're looking for a web-based application platform like Ulteo OVD, it's for our internship project. We've tried a few packages (We have to install it on Ubuntu 15.04 from scratch), but we could not get some packages needed for these packs. They were already removed from the repository, I suppose...

@A.B. O_o

@A.B. listening...

@terdon If I could, I would accept your answer. askubuntu.com/a/683434/367165
