What's with all those dashes?

1:26 AM
@NathanOsman win98? VM or actually installed ?

It's installed in a virtual machine.
Although it was very difficult. I had to work around a number of installation issues.

Oh. I thought it's install cds are all out for that. Holly cow.
Speaking of Windows, I'm probably gonna try to get windows server 2012 into vm this Saturday.

@Serg I have the original installation CD.

@Serg sounds fun. Why not 2008 R2?

@Zacharee1 You mean 2012 R2, right?

1:31 AM
@Zacharee1 cuz that's what my University offers to engineering students for free

@Serg it looks so disgusting though. you can get aero on 2008

2008 is vista. And trust me, you don't want to touch it.

My biggest concern is java right now. My professor hasn't posted any grades yet for the last 4 projects and midterm and we have #5 due soon. It's pretty mush pisses me off

What does Windows Server 2008 have to do with Vista?

Is this OS too old? ;)

1:36 AM
Party like its 1998

Oh yeah!!!
I found my old PB Windows 95 restore disk, and I was able to make it work in a VM. =)

Restore disk ? Waaaait a minute. You can install windoze from a restore disk ?

Yep, they had them way back then.

Oo !!!!!!

That is the exact one I have. Same part number

1:40 AM
@Seth 2008 is Vista. 2008 R2 is 7

I haz a lightbulb moment . . . .@Terrance thank you

well that's confusing, especially as Vista has 2 service packs.

@Serg No problem! =)

@Seth Well, they're not exact equivalents. 2008 was based on Vista and R2 just upgraded to 7
They're actually separate purchases I believe

WOW! It even has my old job's phone number on the disk.
And if you're daring enough:

1:43 AM
3.1? I have that on my iPad

That's DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11 in VirtualBox

So yes?

Yep

well gtg

@Zacharee1 Take care. =)

1:46 AM
Gee, i remember working on dos and Norton Commander way back in Ukraine around 5-6 grade....and turbo pascal. Who would have thunk that this dum dum would eventually be in engineering doing c and java and linux ?

Nostalgia. =)
Now if I can actually find a good emulator that can actually run Mac OS 9 without crashing........

I hated macs in high school, cuz they looked different than "normal" pcs
:p

You mean like the Macintosh IIe?
Or the iMac color flavored line?

I don't even remember what they had in high school. But id sure love to go back and play with it.

Maybe regular flat panel iMacs then?

1:55 AM
That ^

Ah, yes iMac 1st gen
Hockey puck mouse

lol
I might have an OS/2 vm on virtualbox on my desktop

@JourneymanGeek Nice!

@JourneymanGeek how's that running ?never tried os/2

A: Why can't old PCs view modern sites?

Journeyman GeekSimply, a lot of modern HTML features we take for granted did not exist back in those days. There are attempts to build 'modern' browsers for older OSes - classilla, for example. You can easily load up linux onto a suitable PII or PIII system and still be able to handle a basic modern webpage. ...

@Serg: utter pain to install, utter pain to find someware that runs on it....
Its more of a running joke I whip out to take browser screenshots.

1:59 AM
Ok, so kind of like msdos. God it
Got

more like windows 3.11 + + + +

^ Agreed

and the desktop reminds me a little of CDE

So....lemme get this straight.... cde was like one of the original de for unix right ?

It looked like this:

2:03 AM
Could there be cdr for Ubuntu by any chance ?
Gosh its a pain to type on my phone

2:30 AM
Ever thought about what you to do when you're coding and there's a fire in the building? Ladies and gentlemen, I present: git-fire!

3:00 AM
Yeah, there's an ubuntu CDE port

3:23 AM
@Serg o/

3:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek That CDE looks awesome!

@Seth That sign though. It needs to be next to interview rooms. If I saw it, it would be hard to turn down just about anything.

3:59 AM
@Seth git-fire ? sounds german . . . .random unrelated comment is random . . . .in any case, it's a good idea; emergency backup for developers notbad.png
Here's a thought though . . . if there were no search engines before, how dafuq people were using interwebs before google and all that jazz ?

lol
altavista, then google yahoo...
before that, I donno
and er...
that search engine with a black lab
and..

Yeah, I found an article about early search engines and stuff , but it's just curious how on earth people were surfing web if they didn't know exact addresses ? So like . . .they had to have lists, kinda like phone books ? oO
By the way , out of that article I learned that creators of Yahoo were electrical engineering majors. #proud-to-be-EE-major yo !
The answer is telnet and FTP . . . . video oO
Sure makes it appreciate how far interwebs have gone

4:18 AM
@Serg: many early CS folk were EEs

@JourneymanGeek right, because CS as major didn't quite exist untils 80s or so , right ? I was born in 90s, more less immigrated to the US in 2007, so I am like . . . . amazed at everything . . .
A lot of CS stuff was actually part of Math or EE departments before, so I've learned
which makes sense

Yup, and EEs learnt programming concepts

@JourneymanGeek Still do, in my EET program we learn Visual Basic in Tech Programming , then C in Advanced Tech programming, and then PIC18 microcontrollers, assembly and C.

Lol at a suggested video ->
Upgrading From Windows 1.0 to Windows 8 On Actual Hardware

4:49 AM
So I just learned a new difference between Trusty and Vivid.
start-stop-daemon doesn't support the --remove-pidfile flag on Trusty.
Who knew?

I just learned start-stop-daemon exists oO

5:02 AM
@Serg It's mostly used by init.d scripts.
...and my Juju charm now.

@Serg Good night =)

@Ravan hello :)
@Serg - good morning :) did you see this -> askubuntu.com/questions/680825/…
@hg8 Good morning to you as well ! :)

@Ravan looks good to me, following the git steps

@Serg little different...
I think I made some what complex...
@Serg Is there any mistake in Desktop code?

@cl-netbox Ah, OK. Now much improved. I'll remove my comment

@Serg and upvote Q and A ? ... =) ... after removal I will remove my comment as well ...

7:45 AM
@Ravan The only thing that bothers me is Exec=env . Does it open if you run it ?
^ Just in case anybody needs a mood lift today

@Serg Did I missed anything?....

@Serg ... removed - Thanks ... :)

@Serg It is opening from launcher
but icon missed .....
@Serg I am going to delete that from answer....

@Serg what about coffee and smoke today - any updates ... ? =)

@Ravan icon is not essential. I rarely add that to my .desktop files; so yeah, might wanna remove that. I don't really see anything else I can comment about. The git page also mentions some variables . . . those might need to be exported in the .profile file, but I'm not 100% sure
@cl-netbox Smoke . . . still not quit, but throat got a bit better. Coffee . . .mmm, had like 3 cups today, and I'm going to need a lot again in the morning when i wake up. It's 1:51 am, and i need to wake up at 4:40 am, so . . . only 3 hours left to sleep pretty much

7:51 AM
@Serg =)

@Ravan em . . why did you delete the whole .desktop file ?

@Serg then better go to bed NOW ... better for your health ! =)

@cl-netbox yeah . . .i make a constant mistake of getting 3 hours of sleep before work :(
Anyhow, see you later guys !

@Serg I will ad later...after proper adjustment
any up?

@Serg sleep well my friend ! =)
@Ravan please let @Serg go to bed ... ! =)

@cl-netbox HO

8:09 AM
@cl-netbox @Ravan hehe, it's Ok, I already done enough damage to my sleep and its not the first time. You guys are fine. Also, I stopped on one of the questions just now , had to answer that :)

@hg8 @cl-netbox @Serg how to verify a .iso is bootable or not?

@Ravan by just trying out whether it boots !

@cl-netbox ...

Q: Bitnami. Another 'is this supported?' question

ArronicalRelating to this question can Bitnami be considered on-topic? I flagged to close as off-topic, but think I might have been a bit too hasty. The answers about ssl certificates and virtual hosts is useful within Ubuntu installations as a whole. I know that httpd.conf can be used, but isn't created...

9:19 AM
@Fabby how are you?

@Ravan So-so, Found out yesterday that a job application I had good hopes for will not be continued...
Please downvote so I can cast a delete vote..

@Fabby done
@Fabby here
=)

@Ravan +1
Hrmpf! Out of delete votes! :(

@Fabby thanks=)....I found this

@Ravan :D

9:26 AM
@Fabby I edited my question here please have a look....

@Ravan editing...
What is your question?
Is it to create a bootable iso file from a live usb or just to create an iso file? @Ravan

@Fabby bootable iso....what is the difference

an ISO file is just a file.
You could create an ISO file of your home directory...
(which would not be bootable)
That's why I'm asking...

I followed terdon answer...I posted the result @Fabby

continuing edit
@Ravan you're asking 2 questions in one question...
Concentrate on one!

9:35 AM
@Fabby ??

@Ravan :D Sorry for being cryptic: I edited your question...
and am now editing terdon's answer.
If you also want to copy files to an iso, ask another question.
(as it confuses everyone)
There!

yes
...=)

Read both question and answer again!
(and try again)

reading

You should use /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sdb1 as /dev/sdb contains the mbr as well...

9:39 AM
@Fabby both looking ..related
@Fabby then what should be title for my second question?

@Ravan What else do you want to do?
Just create an iso of a bunch of files?
or create an iso by copying a bunch of files of your machine and a (bootable) USB onto a new (bootable) USB?

@Fabby I would like to know without creating .iso can I store content in folder...

Me no understand bwana!

If it sounds stupid I will ignore it...=) @Fabby

Think about what you want and I'll have a smoke in the mean time!
So you want a USB key to be stored in a file?
(as a back-up?)
Please explain better.

9:43 AM
give me time....;P
I will try my best to explain

I don't have time: I need to go back to job-hunting!

@Fabby see that screenshot

yes?

Is it possible to move the files to other folder?
and then later create live usb

No.
because the files don't contain the MBR...

9:49 AM
that is my second Q
@Fabby no tool to do that?

If your question is:
Can I copy these files and the mbr to some directory to later make a live USB?
then the answer is yes!
or: How should I copy the contents and the mbr of a USB to a directory for later USB generation
then an answer is possible.

@Fabby can I post it ?

@Ravan No! I forbid you!
:D

@Fabby what is the answer?

Off course you can ask a different question! And then @terdon's original answer is the answer...

9:53 AM
@Fabby btw....when I check .iso...it failed

just google for copying mbr.
It's not an iso...
it's a dump...
lemme look again

then the answer?
crap

no...
you need to dump it back.
it's an image file, not an iso...

@Fabby you mean it can't be bootable?

Editing again.

9:55 AM
unless mbr present...

@Fabby I didn't followed cat....I used genisoimage command

I don't know anything about that...
I use ddrescue: that reads even when you have bad sectors...

@Fabby =)...lie ;P
@Fabby ok

did you use:

9:59 AM
@Fabby here

genisoimage -o foo.iso /dev/XdY
@Ravan Huh?
what is the /dev/XdY of your USB???

@Fabby I did lot of search...but still OP not responded...

I need to get back to job-hunting.

@Fabby /dev/sdb1

Let's concentrate on this USB thing, will you??? :P
no!
wrong!
/dev/sdb
is it???
because in my computer it's /dev/sdd

10:02 AM
No ...I verified in DIsks....the device name is /dev/sdb1

That's the partition's name.

then use:
genisoimage -o foo.iso /dev/sdb

@Fabby don't mind every time you say "hunting"??

@terdon thanks for not smashing me by removing half of your answer!

(at)All the SE flavored markdown savy people: How can I include a apt:// link?

10:03 AM
;-)

@Fabby You were quite right, it was left over from a previous version and was just repetitive. Thanks for fixing it.

Ravan was posting two questions in one question confusing everyone!
@terdon You're welcome!

@Helio I assume Ubuntu intercepts those somehow? Opens them in the software center or something?

@Ravan So? Does /dev/sdb work?

@terdon: You suppose well. However it doesn't appear as link when the markdown renders.

10:05 AM
@terdon hello

i.e.
[Aeskulap](apt://aeskulap)
doesn't appear as link

@Ravan hi

@Fabby sdb1 working
@terdon I don't understand your comment...

@Ravan no! /dev/sdb without the 1

@Helio I doubt it will be possible. I have seen people post links to the what's it called? The Ubuntu store?

10:07 AM
/dev/sdb1 is the partition!

genisoimage -o foolk.iso /dev/sdb
I: -input-charset not specified, using utf-8 (detected in locale settings)
Total translation table size: 0
Total rockridge attributes bytes: 0
Total directory bytes: 0

@Ravan ah!

@Ravan I meant that I have no idea about this validation header so I can't help. Also that you should try using the iso instead of "checking" it to find out if it works.

@terdon: Firefox will handle it for you/me opening the Ubuntu Software Center on the desired package

@terdon Oh yes....I will check...

10:08 AM
Good!
I'm gone!

@Helio Not on my machine, I don't use Ubuntu. Presumably, Ubuntu comes with firefox tweaked to open such links in the software center.

Job hunting! Ping me only when the chat room burns down!
:P

@terdon: What OS do you use?

Not sure what using apt:// adds though. Just tel them to install the package.
@Helio LMDE. Basically Debian testing with a few tweaks from Mint.
Although, at this point, I've fiddled with the packages so much, I'm probably closer to Debian Jessie.

@terdon: Firefox handles apt:// as the magnet: or telnet:// opening a external application
@terdon: Good OS choice!

10:10 AM
@Helio Yeah, that's what I meant. It is setup to open them in the software center.

@Helio I like it, yes :)

@terdon: Iĺl say to the OP: type in the search bar of the SW Center or sudo apt-get install

@Ravan Like I said: I don't use that... I use ddrescue!
Anyway, you pinged me without the chat room burning down...
Leaving now!

@Helio I know I've seen links to the Ubuntu store on AU. I wonder how they did it.
@Ravan Looks OK. Why don't you just try it? Just try to boot from it, if it works, you know it's OK.

10:14 AM
@terdon sure...sorry to post that edit without direct testing....
@terdon btw this while posting I mentioned not from usb.....but after edit by others that was deleted...=)

@Ravan Oh, sorry, that wasn't directed at you! I meant to ping Raphael:
What about dd command? — Raphael 24 hours ago

@terdon haaa
you too make ping mistakes...

@Ravan Many!

@terdon this is second time I got wrongly ping

Check again the answer and upvote if do you think is well. Also check my rant to Paulus. I don't know if I'm acting well. askubuntu.com/questions/647785/…

10:26 AM
@Helio thanks for the edit - you've made that into a real answer. The comment though is a bit harsh - have removed.

@fossfreedom: Thanks!
@fossfreedom: I expect that all the downvoters upvote again. When I was 11 rep, also done things like Paulus. Once I knew the SE rules, I improved my behavior a lot.

10:52 AM
@[Savvy mods of this galaxy] How can I include a full view of a question like the SmokeDetector ones?
Ping to alive users: @fossfreedom @terdon @Mateo ^^^

@Helio Full view?

@terdon: Yes, that appears the icon of the user and a big blue title and a trim of the text.

@Helio Smokey doesn't do that. Do you mean oneboxing? Like this:

stupid rapsongs parodies
but they are so funny tho T_T
So caffeine will be my best friend today again

@Serg: I think that caffeine will force your body to do what he don't wants to do :-(. However, the first idea I have for these cases is to sleep before 11 PM and wake up approx at 7:30 AM

eh, I'm a night owl by nature , and having to wake up at 5 am for work doesn't help at all @helio
OK, gtg drive. bye guys
or more like, see you in about 40 - 50 mins

@Serg: Bye! See you soon!

@NathanOsman huh, back to Firefox till they stabilize it I suppose

@Mateo @NathanOsman: I personally don't like Vivaldi (the browser). Only the musician.

I thought he was a composer.

11:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek: Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher and cleric. However, note my lack of English vocabulary.

@JourneymanGeek: I didn't knew if English composer is the correct alternative to the Spanish compositor. So musician fits well.

ahh
Sorry for being pedantic.

@JourneymanGeek: Please don't regret. These things make me learn.

I suppose virtuoso violinist makes him a musician. However none of us are old enough to have heard him live I suspect ;p
