Q: How to change from existing DEB files to Centos RPM

Nahshon pazI'm moving a product from Ubuntu 12.04 to Centos 6.6. I have ~500 deb files. (for example 'dpkg -i libaio1_0.3.109-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb'). I need these debs on Centos . Is there a viable way to install deb packages on Centos? A reliable way to convert deb files to a Centosable format? (I tried t...

@ParanoidPanda: No, a LiveUSB of openSUSE. You can download it from the official GNOME web page.
I think that Gnome must evolution more.
I'll expect until 3.33 or something like.
I couldn't boot it on VBOX

How can I say índice onomástico in English?
Is for searching the right way of making one in LibreOffice.
I didn't find nothing as onomastic index

Argh! Help, please! What to do on a kernel oops?
Upgrade to 3.19.0-31-generic lead to a freeze as soon as it reaches the login screen on boot.
Rebooted with Alt-SysRq-REISUB and selected previous kernel version (30) which works.

@ByteCommander 30 is the latest stable

Now after login, I got the apport error message:
@cl-netbox o.O???
I can't remember having added an unstable kernel PPA.

3.19.0-31 is testing 30 is stable ... checking ... wait

apt-cache policy linux-image-3.19.0-31-generic
linux-image-3.19.0-31-generic:
  Installed: 3.19.0-31.35
  Candidate: 3.19.0-31.35

        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

@ByteCommander yes - 31 is proposed - accidentally enabled ?

12:34 PM
Hrmpf...
No, I did that. But I haven't expected bad kernels coming in that way... :P

yes they do ... =)

So... Can I just remove that 31 kernel now with apt-get and it will set up 30 as default again? Or do I need additional config?

Simply boot into 30 and purge all 31* related packages

I am booted into 30, so okay.
Will check the origin of future kernel updates from now on.

I always remove the old kernel when booted into new one without issues

12:38 PM
You know what I should do additionally? E.g. filing a bug etc?

no it is not a bug - when you enable proposed or backports you get testing software

Well, it's also important there that they know if something goes wrong.
Or is what apport(?) does enough?

I only once enabled backports temporarily for getting one package manaually that fixed an issue and afterwards disabled it
apport reports everything including "everything from you" - I disabled it
gksudo gedit /etc/default/apport -> enabled=0

Hmmm...
Where can I see what it sends as textfile?

pops up for too many unimportant things and when checking the content : unknown error found
31 problems are already known afaik ...

hg8

Nope, looking now.

@Helio Just index, probably.

@hg8 that's what I meant - thanks :)

@ByteCommander Seems like a buggy kernel as been pushed :/

A: Freeze after upgrading kernel to 3.13.0-66 (14.04) or 3.19.0-31 (15.04)

Gunnar HjalmarssonBuggy versions of the Linux kernel were uploaded on October 7 to trusty-proposed and vivid-proposed. Corrected replacement packages are about to be uploaded - see bug #1503655. Version 3.13.0-66.107 (trusty) will be replaced by version 3.13.0-66.108 Version 3.19.0-31.35 (vivid) will be replaced...

@ByteCommander @hg8 that's why it is called proposed ! :)

@cl-netbox indeed :)

Yup, looks like that. Learned my lesson to disable proposed updates today. :)
At least on my main machine.

btw - happens all over again .. so always disable

@ByteCommander A lesson learned for a lot of people today -including me-

Q: Isn't it time to review Mint policy?

GannetI abandoned XP about a year ago and opted for Linux Mint 17.0 on the basis of reviews but with no experience of Unix or its derivatives. After trading Cinnamon for xfce I have stayed put other than upgrading to 17.1 then 17.2. I admit to some ignorance but so far as I can see, Mint is 95% Ubunt...

Disabled proposed and backports now.

hg8
No more votes left for me today :(

1:34 PM
@hg8 are you interested in iso booting ?

hg8
1:46 PM
@cl-netbox I am interested in everything

@hg8 clnetbox.blogspot.com/2015/10/hidden-gems.html - please tell me what you think about it ! :)

hg8
@cl-netbox reading
@cl-netbox That's clear and well explained
@cl-netbox now I know how to to it ;)
@cl-netbox but why did you use Google doc to post code ?

@hg8 why not ? - Google has the best integrated online services today and they listened to the critics - you can adjust nearly everything now - way safer and more privacy concerned than before.
@hg8 that is why I asked you to sign in ti G+ - better integration !

hg8
@cl-netbox Of course. I meant why not adding it directly to your blog post ?

@hg8 optical reason - post should be landscape format - so for better copy and paiste ... this way ...

hg8
2:00 PM
@cl-netbox ok =)

Hrm... I don't like links to the great G...

hg8
@ByteCommander I am with you for that.

But using the iso-boot feature might be something I'll consider in the future.

@ByteCommander times ago I hated G - but things change - and you always have to rethink as well ...

@cl-netbox Oh, I did! I used to like google... :-/

who can help me?

Hi @xiaodongjie. Maybe you should tell us the problem first?

2:17 PM
yes, I am very interested about development in angola.
So i found angolinux.
But the sites are all died.

Never heard of angolinux....

So i could not download latest angolinux version now.

Sorry, I can't reach their official site either...

hg8
@cl-netbox nice. I a good idea to keep thing like these

Nor did I quickly find any other...

2:23 PM
@hg8 so what about signing in to g+ adding me to your circles and getting notified about new things automatically - I will add you then as well to mine (there are not a lot people anyway) ?

^_^ @xiaodongjie hello again ! Sorry, haven't stayed in contact much. Been busy and my phone was stolen. How's life ?
@ByteCommander I haz a java question
May I azk ?

@Serg My life was good.

Good is good ^_^

@Serg Just "azk" straight away... ;)

@ByteCommander can a constructor have a switch-case block of code to test passed to it variables ?

2:34 PM
@Serg It can have whatever code is necessary. But you can't have a return value to signalize the error, so you either have to throw an exception or add an attribute to the class you're instantiating that reflects the construction state.
(I think. Haven't written any serious Java for a year... :( )

I've done a improved version fo yout script
7
A: Remove except some files/directories in a script; need revision

terdonYou don't even need a script. If you're using bash, you can turn on extglob and give negative patterns: $ ls foo.avi foo.bbl foo.bib foo.log foo.png foo.tex foo.txt foo.wav $ shopt -s extglob $ rm !(*tex|*bib|*png) $ ls foo.bib foo.png foo.tex As explained in man bash: If the extg...

#!/usr/bin/env bash

for pattern; do
    glob+="*${pattern}|"
done

shopt -s extglob
ls !(${glob})
Try it with caution
You can replace ls by rm... But is not recomended
To create a test enviroment, I suggest these commands:
mkdir test
cd test
touch test.{gif,tif,jpg,png,xcf,svg}

user136984
I have some great news! :D

@ParanoidPanda: What?

2:40 PM
Google bought abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com

user136984
I just restocked on CHOCOLATE CAKE! :D :D :D

user136984
After months of not having it!

@ParanoidPanda: A new version of Android?

user136984
No, you know, the edible food substance known as "Chocolate Cake"... :P

@Helio Did you try it? That doesn't work, wrong syntax.

2:42 PM
@terdon: Where?

user136984
I don't think that a new version of Android would taste as nice... :P

@ByteCommander 3Q (in chinese web slang, that's thank you)

@Helio You are adding a | at the end of the string:
ls: cannot access !(*gif|*tif|)#: No such file or directory

@terdon: It works for me

I'm about to faceplant here, need sleep

2:44 PM
$ echo $BASH_VERSION
4.3.11(1)-release

@Helio What's the value of $glob when you run it?

@Rinzwind:

Oh, hang on. My bad

Yes, that does seem to work.
@Helio I had a copying error

user136984
2:46 PM
By the way, does anyone know when Shumway will be signed by Mozilla as I can't use it at the moment because it is not?

@Helio Google bought that one today from them

@terdon: I have a trouble with computers. Is that I always miss the first letter of the selected text ;-)

Cool. I had assumed that a trailing | would break it. Looks like it doesn't. Nice, thanks.
@Helio No, I had a comment after the last line and that seemed to break it.

@terdon: Comment the script and update your answer if do you like it.

ls !(${glob})#foo

2:47 PM
@terdon: Two major features:

1. Will not delete itself.
2. The final pipe it's fine

@Helio Huh? Why not? It will if it's run in the same directory.

2:50 PM
$ bash script xcf png
Will skip: 1.gif  1.ico  1.jpg  1.tif  script
@terdon: Begins on $0

@Helio No it won't:

Why?

 $ ls
script  test.gif  test.jpg  test.png  test.svg  test.tif  test.xcf
$ bash script xcf png
script	test.gif  test.jpg  test.svg  test.tif
And why would you run it as bash script instead of ./script?
Umm. Sorry. Being stupid again. Yes, it does skip script.
But only if you run it as bash script
No! Dammit! Sorry, no concentration. It does delete script anyway you run it. That's why we see it in the ls output.

@terdon: Trying...

Anyway, it should delete itself.
There's nothing special about it. If it doesn't match the exclusion glob, it should be deleted.

2:56 PM
@terdon: I'm busy, I'll review in 15min

DevRobotMy edit. Note that hg8 said This edit did not correct critical issues with the post - view the revision history to see what should have been changed. So he edits it himself. He did the same as I did but... He changed an h to H... Shouldn't my edit have been accepted?

user139252
Is something about it not working?

@HeatherBrown No. Helios suggested a simpler version (no functional difference, just more elegant code) which I have edited in.

@terdon: Try this
#!/usr/bin/env bash

for pattern; do
    glob+="*${pattern}|"
done

glob+="${0##*/}"

shopt -s extglob
ls !(${glob})

@Helio Why? I don't want it to skip the first argument. First because usually scripts are run as script.sh and not bash script.sh and secondly because I don't want the script to be treated any differently. It's a file and should be removed unless explicitly told not to.

3:22 PM
@terdon: Ok, Then your version is fine. Only to save the script from the massive deletion

@Helio Yes, I don't want that. The OP didn't specify and the script has no business being in the directory of the target files.

#!/usr/bin/env bash

## For each argument, ad it to $glob
for pattern; do
    glob+="*${pattern}|"
done

## Enable extended globbing
shopt -s extglob

## Delete all the files but the specified
ls !(${glob})

@A.B.: Do you know if there are going to be new desktop pictures for Ubuntu GNOME 15.10? Has there been a wallpaper competition or do they only do that for the LTS releases?

@ParanoidPanda: The latest seems to be 15.04

3:52 PM
@Helio Yes, that's what we already had, right?

@terdon: yes.

@Helio Yeah, sorry, I'm Greek so the name Helio is actually Helios, Hyperion notwithstanding :)

@terdon: Don't worry, I typed that bash style error as a joke

It's automatic. I'd call you Helio when talking to you but Helios when talking about you. It's a declination thing :)
@Helio I know, I took it as one.

@terdon: Why you put the do in the next line?

Oli
3:54 PM
@blade19899 That's one of the more egregiously incorrect usages of "GNU/Linux" I've seen. Surely he'd just be writing the backdoor in Linux.

@Helio Habit. I find it clearer that way.

@Oli Yeah, not even his holliness Pope Stallman would have used it there.
@Helio Precisely :) Actually, I write Perl one way and bash another. Go figure. That's why I'm not a programmer.

@terdon: Effectively, you're then two programmers. ;-)

Or just a bad one.

4:01 PM
@terdon: Tell it me! I learned advanced programming with Gambas 2... Now I have the bad habits of the old basic.

@Helio Bah, soy alérgico a los mariscos.

@ParanoidPanda I used to run ClamTK, but I didn't care for it much. It always needed updates, and it had a hard time reading my definition files, so I got rid of it.

6:36 PM
@Terrance you did well because Ubuntu is always under the eyes of million of people around the world so you don't ve to worry about viruses and malware.
make a better place for you and for me and the entire human race
@Terrance I've never heard of any viruses in Linux like Windows

@565656 I still run ClamAV and Freshclam. I leave it to update itself 24 times a day.
@565656 My system is shared and transfers lots of data through it. It can remove Windows viruses before they get to other computers.

@Terrance You can if you are so bothered and use Windows base products or Games using Wine
@Terrance The future is open-source my friend

@565656 I don't care for gaming in Wine. It is not stable and crashes constantly. If I need to game, I boot to Windows in its own space and it works fine. I leave my system mainly on Ubuntu as a backup server and media server.

@Terrance You must be running Windows in VM
@Terrance Or may be a Dual-Boot

@565656 No. I do dual-boot with GRUB. A VM on my system causes too much overhead and games do not run as smooth as they should.
@565656 My original response here was for @ParanoidPanda asking about ClamTK, that's all.

6:48 PM
@Terrance YA GRUB is a nice boot-manager indeed

Hi! Is there a good oneliner to show only the open (to outside) ports on my system?

Which invisible man?

user136984
Because it's either @Terrance's brain, or my computer (or some server error)... :P

6:57 PM
@ParanoidPanda You mean 565656?

565656

@Helio There are tons of options in the manpage. Maybe doing a -l for listening for ports.

Interesting, same here

user136984
I mean that above I see this:

I see him. I even talked to him two days (?) ago...

@Helio No problem

He has left the room though, so he's not in here at the very moment.

Strange... So what's up with my system?

He has left the chat, this is nothing strange.

user136984

Why can't I see his messages?

It is interesting that Paranoid's chat window does not show 565656's messages.

Oh, right
He ignores you =)

user136984
@Terrance: I would prefer for my name to be shortened to "Panda", not "Paranoid". :P

Ah, I just saw that you can do that.
@ParanoidPanda Sorry about that. "Panda" it is! =)

user136984
@A.B.: No, I don't think that it works that way round... If he ignores me, he doesn't see my messages, I don't think it's meant to work the other way round unless I ignore him too.

right

Let's see, I will ignore you @A.B., and you tell me if you can see my messages.

@A.B.: Ok, I have ignored you, can you still see my messages?

yes, I can read your messages

I hope you made sure you know how to unignore people... ^.^

@ParanoidPanda: Good night
@HeatherBrown: Yes.

user139252
I always set it up to a power level or two above what I think would be good.

user139252
That way, when I actually start working on it, it's still fast enough

@HeatherBrown: Good point. However, to work on plastic, better to use heat instead of drill.

user139252
7:23 PM
Yeah, otherwise everything just gets all chewed up looking and weird.

@HeatherBrown: You can fix that with a grinder disk to grint the surface. An drilling beginning in the visible places.

user139252
Seth is a hippo?

Yes to most of the above. Just keep a trash soldering iron tip. On "a little too hot, so when i start using it - it's fast enough"

Anecdote:
a welder taught me to do that with oxy-acetylene rigs, because if you get the temp just right the slag just peels off, and you don't have to chip and grind. also, it's faster. The instructor at the college (not the one that taught me to weld) said "that weld can't be strong enough. it's going to break" ;) it didn't. then he asked me to show him how i did it. I did. "That's your problem - the torch is too hot." I still weld that way, just not
not the same, but equally amusing

@hbdgaf This was a dremmel, not a solder :p.

Well, now that this arcade machine is fixed, I'm going to play dig-dug. Because I'm an adult, it's my lunch break, and I'm allowed.

7:33 PM
goodbye ... see you :)

@cl-netbox: Bye!

wow, this is a good answer: qr.ae/RPWjeh (warning: Quora link)

@HeatherBrown The Seth icon seems more like a rag dragon

@Seth: I read your profile daily, and I everyday seen a rag lizard. ;-)

@Helio >:|

@Seth: If you received that subtle joke... Now, reading your profile, I've seen the disambiguation text and I couldn't resist.
Seriously, I never read your profile.

@A.B. o/ btw! I forgot to say hi to you! =)

@Helio I know haha :P
The disambiguation was meant as a half serious joke in itself ;p

@Seth: (^_^)

Literally me and my college life

That poem is very often misunderstood.

Not always true
@NathanOsman yup. Both roads were equally good to take; but most people use it to mean "you/I/he/she took the hardest path , so he's awesome"
I always take a long way to do stuff

Exactly.

and end up missing out on the good stuff. Like one of the questions today. While I was figuring out how to do a script with bash + awk, kos did it with find and rename.

@Serg knowing multiple ways to come up with the same answer is always good. =)

8:47 PM
@Terrance true; but knowing simple and efficient ways is always preferred, right ?

9:10 PM
@Serg I am certain it is preferred, but knowing the long and complicated way makes knowing the simple and efficient way easier to understand.

@Terrance also true

Not sure if this can be considered a security hole,but lock-screen can be killed from tty

9:32 PM
@Serg If you have physical access to a machine there is no such thing as security...
(unless with full drive encryption and the machine turned off)
>:-)
@Serg I'm lazy: I always take the fastest route (unless the fastest one is longer in the long term) ;-)

@Serg that's.. interesting.

@HeatherBrown Only temporally an adult... ;-)
@Seth That's how I get around using 3 keyboard layouts...
My password only works on one of the three...
So whenever my screen locks and I can't log-in, TTY1, kill screensaver.
I even have an answer about that on the site here.
>:-)

9:56 PM
@Fabby true that, true that

user139252
@Fabby Very true. I am very much a child, spiritually.

@HeatherBrown And please: keep that attitude forever!
;-)

user139252
@Fabby I'm painting another picture for you.

Hibernating now... Then a smoke, then to bed, then turn on... Be back in 7 mins

10:15 PM
Hmmm, the panel on ubuntu lockscreen can be prevented from showing up, but I cannot seem to add an indicator to it

@HeatherBrown Where do you generate these anyway?

user139252
