MLM
12:23 AM
I just booted a live USB, took a printscreen and saved it to one of my partitions. I loaded back onto Windows 8 and now I can not open the image. Any way to modify it to be usable in Windows?

@MLM depends...

MLM
@Braiam on? It is a png. I can see it named in the directory but I can't open it

you "can't open it", exactly why you say that you "can't"?

MLM
@Braiam No image viewer will open it. Photoshop won't open it. The windows explorer says it is 509kb but when I right click and go to properties it says 0 bytes. Sorry I am not following exactly what you are trying to suggest.

12:55 AM
This is what my day is like:
Bad news: the DVI-D cable I bought is about an inch too short. Good news: I finally found a use for those old phone directories.

MLM
So what about saving something in Ubuntu makes me not able to open it in Windows?

Q: How to check what `wondershaper` has done?

Minimus HeximusI used this command: sudo wondershaper eth1 20 20 to limit network traffic. The command shows no errors. But I need a command or network monitor or gui which confirms this limitation. For example, it says that this connection is limited to 20 kb download. So that I'm sure system considers it ...

@NathanOsman I got mine up on two old power supplies ;)
@MLM was windows hibernating? Did you unmount the drive from Ubuntu?

MLM
@Mateo It was a live usb (see a few messages above if you haven't). I just screenshotted, saved to a partition on my hdd. Shutdown, took out USB. And booted back into windows.
Or should this kind of thing work? (I am the anomaly)

@hbdgaf FWIW, the Cherry G80-3000 is a very solid mechanical switch keyboard. Mine has taken eight years of near-daily abuse (and gaming) and it's still going strong. Uses Cherry MX Blue switches so in the heat of programming or somesuch, it's as loud as a firing range. Only downside is mine is PS/2 — whether that's a problem (I think there are USB models but check the reviews, IIRC the G81 isn't as good) is really up to your computer.
Oh and a few keys are starting to fade... But I think that's expected after what must be somewhere in the region of 20-30 million keystrokes.

11:12 AM
I bought a cheap basic keyboard for around 10€ and it still works a year later. It's just a keyboard nothing more. But I had no idea what to buy when I bought my desktop ...

My laptop is heating very fast while watching movies..i dont know how to update driver of my laptop..i am using ubuntu 13.04 and graphics card is x2300

ok so we assume he is using an EOL? @alvar

how to solve this ??

11:27 AM
@Rinzwind that answer wont help if he isn't using an eol! ;)

@Vishwas why 13.04?

@Vishwas you do not update drivers in our OS. That's Windows that does that ;-) See the additional drivers tab for drivers. That will list all avaialble drivers. The prop driver normally works best BUT overheating can also be caused by the sensors not kicking in (=not the driver)

@Vishwas 13.04 is eol upgrade to 13.10.

Dan
@Rinzwind I don't think we should, I've used proxmox, and when you install an Ubuntu template we get that exact problem if apt-get update is not yet run
ok i stand corrected, i'll shut my mouth now

@MLM just asking because windows has a habit of destroying changes when coming back from hibernate
@MinatoNamikaze I buy gear head stuff

@Rinzwind lol, then just simply "windows destroys stuff"

by running

Oli
@Rinzwind That's what I'm saying... The remote system just sees it as standard files, not files on a DVD, so, for example, XBMC won't automatically start playing it (or even recognise that it's a DVD that it can play).

ah
interesting question I have to say Oli :D

Oli
Yeah, it's a nightmare. I'm strongly considering a 5¼" USB enclosure at this point. Cheaper than spending £60-100 on another drive. Edit: Hmm, the enclosures are £40-50 so maybe not. ARGL THIS IS STUPID!!

Why so many questions are asked this time only?

2:34 PM
@Rinzwind clever idea to use lp directly on that image printing Q. Didn't know you could specify that from the CLI

@terdon me neither >:D I google it and to my surprise cups can do it D:

@Oli I doubt this would work, but you could try mounting the CD, then ln -s /mountpoint /media/cdrom or even /dev/cdrom but I really doubt the latter will work. Might be worth a try, I'm thinking it's at least possible that that's all XBMC needs.

it wont @tendon :P

@Rinzwind yeah, I don't really think it will but it will depend on just how XBMC reads the drive. If it just goes straight to /media/cdrom or whatever it might.

Oli
@terdon I'd tried that already but I think you've got me searching for the right thing now... I'm looking for what XBMC needs rather than Ubuntu.

2:45 PM
@Oli I'd avoid ubuntu altogether, you're far likelier to find solutions for other nixes, mounting block devices is more of a server thing.

@tend

This has some pointers though I don't think they're all applicable to Linux

@terdon "(without opening something like gimp" ;-)

@Rinzwind ?
@Rinzwind What do you mean?

2:48 PM
@Rinzwind what does gimp have to do with it?

you answered with imagick >:) but he stated "without opening something like gimp"
(that also being why I went for command line ;) )

@Rinzwind read the answer. It is 100% commandline :)

hmmm
fine then have an upvote >:)

:)
I don't think imagemagick have any gui tools do they?

gimp :=)

2:50 PM
gimp has nothing to do with imagemagick!
gimp's GNU

> ImageMagick does not have as robust a graphical user interface to edit images as do Adobe Photoshop and GIMP, but does include — for UNIX-like Operating Systems — a basic native X Window GUI (called IMDisplay) for rendering and manipulating images and API libraries for many programming languages.

Well, perl, latex and C anyway. Don't do python.

in Unix and Linux, Mar 9 at 2:41, by strugee
look, whether we like vim or emacs, let's just all agree that they're better than gedit

Oli
@terdon I could learn them but I'd rather do some work :) I came close to nirvana with Sublime Text 2... Which does also have a learning curve but Control+Shift+P gives me search access to almost everything.

Dunno, I tried but preferred emacs. I have been using it for more than a decade though so I'm very used to it and have tweaked it to be just the way I want it.

@Braiam I like the occasional flame war

Yeah, and it's written like a poem, probably from a phone
@Braiam why did you edit? Isn't that completely off topic? I thought you guys were super strict about Ubuntu only.

@terdon I voted unclear

I'm guessing he installed kali last and it's kali's grub that's the issue

also, this bugs me "the Ubuntu bootable disk does not boots even"

no ext4 partition, no grub, no /boot, he needs a windows solution

Hi all --- I agree with @Braiam. He has the grub bootloader installed in the disk MBR, but he has removed all its data nuking /boot. The best solution for him should be to get rid of the rest of grub with a windows boot repair (... if it exists, no idea).

Q: Xchat has huge lag and shows ' as text

Harris RubinWhen someone types a message in Xchat I get a huge lag and all of the lines except for the latest one shows up as a ' mark. I have uninstalled and re installed xchat, reinstalled the os with 12.04 13.10 and 14.04. Below on the right screen is a picture of the error

10:20 PM
@HarrisRubin that doesn't need another tag
xchat is version independient

@HarrisRubin No need for a 14.04 tag there, version tags should only be used for version specific questions ;)

btw, you sure you are using xchat and not gnome-xchat?

yes i am using xchat
@Seth should i remove the 13.10 tag
