12:00 AM
it's in my pool of bookmarks now. i'll eureka on it at some point. that is the right direction to take though. i complained in an answer about udev rules about apps that default and can't configure to non-vid0

@Lucio it doesn't :'(

how did you ping yourself? manually enter the post id in :something at the beginning? normally it won't let you do that...

@Mateo cool

sorry, I broke the chat :|

@Mateo stop talking to yourself!

12:02 AM
lol

or you have a superman userscript...

@Braiam just copy the id of the last message, like this...

@hbdgaf yeah, manually change the post number...

that's what i thought. i just suspect he has a button...

@hbdgaf @Lucio solveD it.
Can you believe that no query works if ';' is missing?
I though that was old, for mysql only

12:05 AM
no idea, and i wouldn't hazard a guess since i've never used anything like it.

@hbdgaf ah, I sent you the .1 one here is the 1: gstreamer.freedesktop.org/data/doc/gstreamer/head/… not that it changed much

cool
@Lucio - my current endeavor for learning new things is using the django orm in pygi.
@Mateo camcastic is not lost or forgotten, but i need to take a break and let myself naturally re-motivate. i tend to run too hard at problems, solve a lot, then just stop. i'm trying to pause before i hit stop point.

@hbdgaf sure, there have been some strange things to solve with this too

it's not that. i have the how i want tos sorted out. it's just being ready to code binge.

@hbdgaf ^ any guess?

12:16 AM
why are you trying to connect to 127.0.0.3 not 127.0.0.1

yeah, I keep typing pigy into google... because of raspberry pi.

@hbdgaf Was about to ask this.

and google gives me this:

@hbdgaf I have other projects

12:18 AM
@Lucio i'm not sure that explains it. separate databases for separate projects or apps. you don't need to use multiple instances of postgres...and if you do, it's beyond my postgres usage.

Oh!
wait, don't know if this should be the reason
nginx is stopped
but the tuto doesn't mention that a server need to be running :/

that won't change what postgres does. i'm guessing the postgres service is trying to start twice and bailing out on some lock file in your configuration.

@hbdgaf why is it trying on port 53* and not 80?

that's your DB connection not your http connection...
hence postgres not nginx

right, but I'm changing the nginx configuration and the results differs

12:26 AM
there's so much wat going on right now. i'm taking a break. good luck.

take a break
see u later!

@Braiam I don't know particularly.

@hbdgaf solved: set 'HOST': 'localhost', on settings.py

Q: Shift during boot, no recovery mode

RåmsanI recently bought a used Toshiba ac100, with lubuntu 12.10 preinstalled. The problem is that the previous owner has lost the password, so I am unable to connect to WiFi, change user etc. I have reat the password recovery tips, and stumbled upon another problem: the shift key doesn't bring up rec...

What's up with the Shift key not working?
I bet he's just doing it wrong.. Or he's completely missing it.

@Seth gimme the output of grep -v '#' /etc/default/grub please ;)
wait, forget it
@Seth do you have the review link of that one?
ok, I got it
let's close this Zorin OS question askubuntu.com/review/close/205215
> I ran a live usb session of 3.7
3.7 of what?
if a mod is available, please close this questions?
just what happened with all these Zorin question askubuntu.com/review/close/205213

1:27 AM
oh sorry. Was busy.

still need anything?

yes, a mod...

lol

> My question is about Debian server but I am a Ubuntu user myself and so, took the privilege to ask this question here...
common buddy...

1:28 AM
that's not a privilege. At least, it isn't in the privilege list.

I finished that one.

this is kind of borderline but IMHO he's most asking about the capabilities of his card (I doubt linux drivers shows the WDDM support)
man we are in October!!

I'm going with off-topic for now.
@Braiam ??

I'm closing questions from october D:

1:47 AM
Wow...the new user's review queue just keeps rising...and I'm doing 20 a day.
Does that go down for everyone once one is reviewed, or does it keep going up for you, even if someone else has reviewed it?

if you review an item, it doesn't come back to haunt you...

@Braiam That makes sense, but if someone else reviews one, does your queue drop?

yup

â„¢¡£¢âˆž§¶â€¢ªºâ€“≠“‘…æåßϷ´®â€ ¥¨Ë†øπ“‘«åß∂ƒ©Ë™âˆ†Ëš¬â€¦æΩ≈ç√∫˜µâ‰¤â‰¥÷ Whoa. Did not know the iBook G4 keyboard had that many characters simply by pressing the Alt/Option key...Cool :D
@Braiam I guess people havn't been at the New User post review lately...HELP!!
Is there a minimum rep level for commenting on an answer on your own question?
@Braiam Did I answer this one correctly?

@RPiAwesomeness you meant commented and flagged right?

1:56 AM
Yes.
Not an answer. Question that belongs on Stack Overflow

WordPress vomit

there @rpi, only 25 posts in the review queue

:D I noticed
@FEichinger Why don't you like wordpress?
Another WiFi gone after update...

@RPiAwesomeness update killed wifi = bug ;)

Yeah...there seems like there are a lot of those.

2:04 AM

@RPiAwesomeness WordPress is a terrible blogging platform that is frequently bastardized into a CMS by idiot amateurs and professionals alike who make a quick buck by using an existing codebase with some random code snippets strapped to it.
I've seen companies get scammed out of five digit figures for a five-minute WordPress hackjob.

@FEichinger Good Grief!

@FEichinger that's not WP fault, isn't it?

@Braiam As for the number of WiFi is broke after update questions, it seems that most of them aren't answered. Kind of annoying really (at least to me.)

@Braiam I reiterate: terrible blogging platform. Even the thing it's supposed to be focused on, it's terrible at.

2:08 AM
oh well, but is popular :P
(being a jackass)

It's what I use, however...It's the only thing I've had access to. @FEichinger What other good ones are there? Blogger? (seems a bit unprofessional to me).

OKAY. WHO IS IN CHARGE OF THE NEW USER QUEUE??

PRECISELY! @pacificfils Hi :D

And WordPress is awesome if you are willing to do a little bit of hacking.

@pacificfils anyone that has privileges... it itches you? DO SOMETHING (tm)

2:11 AM
I got my WordPress up to a 100 pagespeed with a LOT of hacking.
@Braiam the number of idiotic questions going through is unacceptable.
People are just clicking "No Action Needed"
without ever reading it.
and the queue goes empty in 1 min.

@pacificfils PRECISELY!!!
No action needed x20 = empty queue + crappy site.
This one seems a bit unclear. Needs more info

@pacificfils The "little bit of hacking" is the problem in the first place. Stop doing that. Use a proper CMS.

@FEichinger i'm too lazy to build a real CMS
I just rewrite 35% of the code.

I bet @FEichinger loves Django ;)

Django?

2:16 AM
Django CMS is a free and open source content management system platform for publishing content on the World Wide Web and intranets. It is based on Django, and written in Python. History Django CMS 1.0 was initially authored by Thomas Steinacher. Django CMS 2.0 was a complete rewrite based on a fork of django-page-cms. Main development of django CMS 2.0 was by Divio AG. The complete list of contributors is available [http://github.com/divio/django-cms/network here]. , django CMS 2.4 is compatible with Django versions 1.4 or 1.5. Translations Django CMS is available in several languages...

ah.

@Braiam Custom PHP CMS all the way. Point is: WordPress is a bloated, messy pile of crap. It's not good at what it's set out to do, and turning it into anything else is just ... no. Don't. Just friggin don't.

Wordpress is not crap.
If you can rewrite PHP code.

if you are rewriting the stuff... then why you get it in first place?

mod around?

2:18 AM
@pacificfils And again: that's the very problem with it.

I've written WordPress plugins - trust me, I know :P

Because a) CODING IS AWESOME b) experience c) bragging rights

You have to a certain amount of rep to comment on an answer to your own question?

nope.

@pacificfils Coding in a terrible language is not awesome.

2:18 AM
nope

@pacificfils And all of these are a reason to do it properly instead of bastardizing a crappy blogging platform.

if a mod kind of happen to read this message, sudo GOTO "Regulators Room"

nope. I do seem to think they got it fixed that you shouldn't need to

Nathan. PHP is so powerful.

Er...

2:19 AM
@NathanOsman: while terrible, it often tends to be the lowest common denominator

@FEichinger I agree that it's bloated, messy, and a pile of crap. But it definitely is good at what it's set out to do... It's an easy and functional CMS

If you can do it right.

@pacificfils PHP is also a terrible language. And this is coming from a PHP dev.

Same here.

you know your php/mysql applications will run on most systems crappy hosting

2:19 AM
Hmmm. So this question/answer could have been commented? askubuntu.com/questions/400264/delete-ghost-guest-folders/…

@FEichinger It has its problems. But everyone supports it.

PHP is, also, a messy pile of crap.

@JourneymanGeek Except when they don't because your hosting provider is 10 releases behind.

^

well, that host is going to go out of business.

2:20 AM
(mysql is crap too IMO. I'm a bit of a fan of postgres)
@pacificfils: sadly no

ooh postgres

I hate postgres.

/facepalm

Just because I grew up (literally) with MySQL

It's the best relational database server out there.

2:20 AM
@pacificfils Yeh, no.

and I don't want to learn how to program in another database.

/me knows almost nothing about database languages

@pacificfils That's not a good reason to hate something.

Needs info

2:21 AM
MySQL is easy and a nice language IMO.
Postgres is complex.

hmmm. Maybe not. Not sure what to do with that one.

That's not true.
You should rarely need to write raw SQL anyway.

PHPMYADMIN FTW

Oh dear...War of the languages...
3

@pacificfils ... Okay, now you've lost all my sympathy brownies.
No more sympathy brownies for you.

2:22 AM
unless Postgres can give me 250% faster speed, I'm staying with MySQL.

Oo! Do I get brownies?

@RPiAwesomeness Every time you ask for them, you lose some.

A good ORM abstracts access to the database.

@RPiAwesomeness lol no kidding. You should have been here when a wordpress mod came in and @jrg said he writes his own CMS's. It was funny.

Ah crap.

2:22 AM
Everyone who thinks PHP is crap, you can do sudo rm -rf /
(don't actually)

@pacificfils PHP is crap. Very crap.

@Seth Hehe. Sounds like it :D

@pacificfils not that it would do anything anyway.

That won't work without the --no-preserve-root flag :P

There's a distinct difference between the language being crap and the language being capable of magic.
3

2:23 AM
@pacificfils postgres has a phpmyadmin equivilent

ah.
<-- IDIOT DETECTED

PHP combines both. If you know what you're doing, you can do a lot of magic with PHP.

@RPiAwesomeness his system is just slow...

also, from the admin point of view, its bloody light once set up

But PHP is very much a messy pile of crap.

2:23 AM
Hmm...I may look into Postgres...

@JourneymanGeek pgMyAdmin, IIRC. But most people just use psql from the terminal anyway.

so what should i learn to replace PHP?
2

@NathanOsman: as folk should

If you can't see that, you clearly haven't worked with anything else. Which, again, is part of the whole problem.

@FEichinger So what do you recommend instead of PHP?

2:24 AM
(which has a good web hosting control panel)

@pacificfils Python+Django.

@pacificfils: thats tricky

Hmmm...what do I do with this one?

use Python for a web hosting cpanel?
ow.

2:24 AM
@Seth Recommend? Nothing. I'm happy with PHP, but people need to accept that it's not a good language. That said, python makes for a great alternative. So does Ruby.

If anyone says use Webmin for hosting, i will skin you alive.

@pacificfils say that in The Comms room... you will be receiving strange emails, your internet will suddenly die, and your digital life will be ruined...

hmm, actually I was wondering. Is there a way to manipulate the firewall without having root rights?

Lately I've been pointing everyone to DigitalOcean. You can get a $5 VPS there that will run Python/Django/PostgreSQL/Postfix/whatever.

@Braiam Yeh, that's pretty much my reaction as well.

2:25 AM
@RPiAwesomeness Try to give it some formatting.

gets out altername internet identity
I HATE YOU NATHAN.
2

well root/using sudo.

Why?

That question I linked to...the user knows it is a dupe, but still posted a new question...

@FEichinger I forgot about Ruby. Other than looking weird, it seems good.

2:25 AM
@pacificfils: and unless you're a hosting provider, you don't need a web hosting panel

@NathanOsman Get used to it.

@Seth Ask @jrg about it on a good day :P

@JourneymanGeek @NathanOsman READ MY BIO

and a lot of people write their own once they're big enough, unless they're a crappy shared host.

(he's like that)

2:26 AM
@Seth Wait, that's been going on for longer already?

and i can't spare the time (or money) to write my own hosting CP.

@pacificfils: oh, understood

@FEichinger LOL

@pacificfils Oh... I see.

2:27 AM
(just that I hear horror stories about most of the big ones)

and NOW you realize.

@pacificfils But still... you offer a control panel, no?

yes.

rolls eyes, shrugs, sighs, gets ready to do something else..

custom zPanel.

2:27 AM
It's shared hosting, right?

si (I can't afford private IPs)

Great knit! I leave for about 30 seconds and 13 comments have gone on...hoo

Then we're talking about two different things.

you can buy your own IPs, i can set it up.
you pay me more, you get your own IP.
I can do that. =]

pacificfils
2:25 AM
I HATE YOU NATHAN.

pacificfils
2:20 AM
I hate postgres.

pacificfils
Tue 6:18 PM
well, i suddenly hate logs.

i hate you all so much.

pacificfils
Tue 7:59 PM
i hate all of the 1 rep users who ask questions, i give a good answer, and they edit the post "it worked" but they don't accept the answer.
@pacificfils My goodness...You hate a lot :D

2:28 AM
i see a psychologist daily.

Okay, okay, okay.

much hate in this one.

@RPiAwesomeness See my revision here: askubuntu.com/posts/400669/revisions when code is on it's own line four spaces works better than backticks ;)

blah, I was supposed to be watching a lecture today

lecture?

2:29 AM
parents kind of broke my groove by expecting me to go grocery shopping

I'm going to leave now ... Before I start speaking my mind freely ...

suddenly realizes he has one to watch too

@Seth: yeah, got bored, doing another CS course ;p

I could be doing other things too...

goes off to try to set up webmin

2:29 AM
CS50x, Harvard

CS being?

Seriously, this is a WONDERFUL time to be alive

**C**omputer **S**cience

computer science - this is their basic programming course.

Dangit! Keep hitting Command+Q instead of Command+1/Command+2...bother it!

2:30 AM
Writes a note to himself saying that "a great way to start a long conversation on chat.AU is to ask about programming languages..."

@pacificfils oh right. duh

@NathanOsman Hehe :D

IIRC they cover scratch, basic C php and mysql ;p

Nathan, can you unstar my message with the link in it?

goes to bother PostGres guys

2:31 AM
I didn't realize it got starred.
thanks

@JourneymanGeek you can use ufw SETUID instead, but IMO you need root to access the iptable module

@JourneymanGeek Sounds cool :D

Everybody may now return to their regularly scheduled activities.

@NathanOsman Heavy drinking? Heavy drinking.

Nathan, mine is to cyberstalk you.

2:32 AM
@Braiam: I wonder how routers do it, run everything as root?

@pacificfils AWWKWAARDDD...

@pacificfils You're fortunate I recently changed my name.

oh shut up.

You wouldn't have even known who I was a few months ago.

ROTFL

2:32 AM
:D

@JourneymanGeek more or less, mine has 3 users, root, configuration and user... I can't do anything as user but very basic stuff

anyone think we should dupe this the other way?

Q: Doing something if connected to particular SSID in Ubuntu

c0rpI want to write a bash script that will put off dropbox automatic synchronization if i'm connected to particular wifi ssid. How can i catch this event: for example i'm working at home and sync is on, if i'm at another place (cafe, work, etc) auto sync is off. Also i want to do some other task d...

says the talking penguin.

(besides me)

Supper time. AFK.

2:33 AM
@Seth as long as the better Q/A pair wins fine with me...

i have a feeling that if Nathan and I met in real life, there would be a big fight.

@Seth I dunno...The other seems better

@Braiam This is more general vs. less general. Only difference.

@pacificfils You would. Half-knowing you, you would

is wondering how hard it would be to basically build a control panel similar to a router, sitting atop hostapd - basically get it to build a /etc/networks based on you choices for bridging, create a hostapd config, and so on

2:34 AM
good grief.

@JourneymanGeek look up DDWRT

@RPiAwesomeness In what way? They're both trying to accomplish the same thing..

@pacificfils: few issues with that - it won't run on a x86 box, openwrt is too esoteric

if this keeps up I'm going to the reg room. If anyone wants to talk to me, come there.

something you can run on top of an existing system would be nice

2:35 AM
@Seth The other had more answers that had more upvotes. I didn't read them very much, so I don't know.

oh, i'll leave

and one of my routers runs ddwrt

@pacificfils You do that.

@pacificfils you can talk, I just am tired of the arguing.

I suspect the other runs an openwrt fork

2:35 AM
I hate arguing.

wait, osman is a mod...

@RPiAwesomeness Yeah, the other one is rather older. (hmm.. is "rather older" good grammar? :S)

My ignore function has seen increased use over the recent weeks. I'm getting twitchy again.

CRAP.

(and the third is hostapd, running on a x86 box, which also handles my torrenting needs)
I need to get my raspi back up though

2:36 AM
@Seth True. It could go either way
@pacificfils What...You see something scary?

@Seth who's aging arguing?

can i help anyone with anything?

oh btw @FEichinger the tic tac toe room froze again. Maybe you get use your leverage and get it unfrozen? (that is, if you want to use it ever again..)
@Braiam nvm.

@Seth Tic Tac Toe?

yeep

2:37 AM
@Seth My "leverage"? What "leverage"? You're making it sound like I am pulling some strings all the time.

@FEichinger You just know people, that's all ;)

cool.

It's not pulling "strings"

so, what hosting software do you recommend?

The people I "know" tend not to be moderators.

>_>

Not an answer.

I thought you were better that way than I was..

Heck, the people I "know" tend to get into big fights with moderators more than anything.

2:38 AM
@RPiAwesomeness cool flagged.
@FEichinger I see.. okay, I'll ask the dino in the morning.
if he's here.
He helped start it so..

(Seriously, though, I have my contacts. But I don't think there's much need to unfreeze it right now. It's not like I started it, either. :P)

what?

@FEichinger true, you obviously didn't :P
@pacificfils eh?
Might as well just leave it. No one ever goes there anyway.

@Seth hmm?

@pacificfils what were you asking about? I don't want to seem to be ignoring you, but I can't answer your "what" if I don't know what you're whatting :P

2:41 AM
"whatting" is a funny word.

@Seth I have no idea anymore.

what did you say?

Can anyone please give me a good idea on how to make Webmin more user-friendly?

@FEichinger Indeed.

2:42 AM
I make words up on a (rather) regular basis.

NSFW language ;p
@pacificfils: set it on fire?

@JourneymanGeek the fox is not here... is not funny :(

it is a word. If urban dictionary counts for anything.

shorts out

lol

2:44 AM
sigh

goes to permanently shutdown server

bleh

bluh

blih

2:45 AM
blih?

bloh

you guys sucks at string sequence...

thank you

we're programmers. we suck at everything.

yeah, and programmers aren't good at anything.
oh, too late.

2:47 AM
inb4 you?

yep

Technically @Seth broke the line, because "bluh" does not follow after "bleh".

I didn't realize we were going in alphabetical order..

I think not even japanese do that...
aieou or something like that...

@Seth What?
@Seth Sorry, my chat lagged

2:51 AM
bye all.

@Seth I was reffering to your "Cool flagged" chat post earlier...

Q: How to change the color of the empty purple screen which appears before splash screen?

LeonardI have changed the purple color of splash screen to black and I also would like to change the color of the screen that appears before the splash screen. How can I do it? BTW, how is this screen called?

@RPiAwesomeness you can flag it yourself ;)

@Braiam Didn't I?

yeah, but there isn't an urgent attention ;) most of us voters already used all their votes right now

and i have officially fallen into depression.

2:59 AM
@pacificfils Oh, sads...why?
