I just realized that someone had nominated me for being a moderator over at E-books... 3 days ago.

@NathanOsman Impressive! Congrats!

But not congrats on forgetting to check the site often enough to notice :P

lol, well, StackApps doesn't need too much moderation ;)

@NathanOsman True :D

@Braiam Not Stack Apps, E-books.

3:07 AM
@NathanOsman I mean that even being moderator in two sites wouldn't be a problem since both are pretty low traffic ;)

I'm hoping E-books grows a bit :)

3:40 AM
@Seth hey there, feeling important? :P

@Braiam Why would I be feeling important?

beats me...

So why the ping?

because reasons...
nah, I was asking myself if we need a question checklist a la Jon Skeet ;)
if we can adapt this to our needs about the things that most questions lacks meta.stackoverflow.com/q/156810/213575

So you think that I would feel "important"? O_o

3:45 AM
it was just... err... trying to strike conversation, it wasn't that profund

oh ok. Was rather confused ;)

so... we need a "checklist"?

Hm. I rather think Oli's idea of a wizard would work better.. We already throw so much in users faces, I don't think they'd read any more.
@NathanOsman AHH in your nomination they spelled "Stack Apps" "StackApps" D:
You should fix that when you get the edit privilege :P

man, that amr tag is a mess...

definitely should be cleaned up, but not ditched.

3:53 AM
build on amr, build for amr, install on amr, amr ide, amr plugin, amr ubuntu touch...

wait.. amr? I took that as a typo of arm..

freak! that's the initials of a extension I support
build on arm, build for arm, install on arm, arm ide, arm plugin, arm ubuntu touch...**
I'm separating everything, build to/for/on arm -> compilation(and related tags)/software installation, install arm tools -> software-installation, install on arm -> system installation, ubuntu touch related questions -> ubuntu-touch

We still need arm.
So arm experts can watch arm questions.
But yeah, questions about Ubuntu Touch + Android + Phones don't need arm.
That's for like Raspi's and such.

wait, @RPiAwesomeness do you follow the arm tag? and if not, which tags you follow?
I don't see a predominance of users that answer those questions (doing an analysis like certain Lizard on the top users)

Ah, that problem.

The chat history is um.....entertaining

I booted from live USB and now I can't find my HDD!

@AmithKK: would you like to take over this problem?

??

Sorry, can't :(

@Windows8 I'm pretty sure the problem is that the partition containing GRUB is missing.
Do you have a LiveCD you can use?

6:17 AM
@NathanOsman yes

Pre final's coming up. study break almost over

I am currently using it

@Windows8 What shows up under "Disks"?
You should see all of your partitions there.

@NathanOsman I see just my Pendrive but no HDD

That's odd. You must have something causing the GRUB prompt to be displayed.

6:18 AM
what to do?

Your best bet is to post a question over on the site and see if someone there can help.

okay, lets see if i get any answer

Do you know how can I use upstart feature in Ubuntu to restart my Python script?

SSH
Yeah.. I saw that but don't know where to put that conf file
So In general I can make, let's say example.conf
file
and edit etc/init file
and add this example.conf file in that init file
and also place it in /etc folder as well?
and then how to start it?
sorry if I am asking silly question

9:45 AM
no, you add a .conf file in the /etc/init folder
so if its tomato.conf, you start it with, iirc service start tomato

To those using Ubuntu GNOME, there seems to be a bug affecting some machines in recent versions of GNOME that cause a pixellated screen upon login. Anyone with the same problem? Can't find anything on the internet. It makes it almost unusable sometimes, and only affects some machines, in this case ATI radeon graphics.

I'll try it later to see if something broke

@Andrew If you delete your own post with a score of 3 or more, you lose your reputation for that post and get the Disciplined badge.

@Andrew Sometimes it takes a little while for changes in reputation to propagate through the database, however I have never seen it happen that an expected change in reputation failed to appear eventually.

2:51 PM
@Mateo things go. i've got a lot of balls in the air. the proposed change for the fixed ratio - i'm thinking 4:3 and 6:9 toggle selection (either or radio buttons) and a size slider. i haven't been able to test the no camera thing. maybe if i just rmmod the uvcvideo kernel module for testing. not sure if it will autoload the module trying to find a camera or not, but it's worth a shot. that one bug has 4 issues or so tied to it.

3:02 PM
@hbdgaf hm, if you have example code I have a tower without a camera to test

3:34 PM
@Mateo that's the thing. i don't have any idea. i can't find the function calls i need in GST. have you tried running it there and examining the terminal output? if it doesn't produce any, try taking out any blanket try: except stuff and see what it spits. I should be able to catch it, I just don't have something to find out the error that is thrown. if it throws something specific, i can give you test code on pastebin or something
(not finding functions i need is related to finding the dimensions of the feed from a dynamic source... all the size calls i can find deal with buffer size not resolution). anyway, i have been working on it, i'm just sort of hitting a wall on the no black bars auto-selection bit.
i shouldn't have to choose the aspect ratio as a user, the programmer should choose it for me to do away with those nasty bars and cropping.

@Takkat You are a mod. Can you retrive babaji's IP?

@Windows8 only mod in chat - but babaji won't chat - the system will auto-ban them eventually/hopefully

hi @Jeremy - if he could, he wouldn't be able to tell you what it was... but I'm pretty sure he could. I know site-mods can, but chat-mods are global. I don't think Takkat is a mod on AU
@Takkat that

Yay! I have bug #1249787
That explains why I can't manage to install saucy here.

@FEichinger I'm so sorry. Have you tried Trusty? that's what I'm running on my daily driver

3:44 PM
@hbdgaf I'm downloading it as we speak :/

It's going to be an LTS, so I think it will get severe bug weight for things like that.

It allegedly works in trusty, although noone seems to know just why.

Is it dual graphics? I see that it reports as Intel not blob-lover on trusty from the thread.

I suspect that that's related, yes.

If you switch your default graphics in bios to intel, the problem may resolve for saucy. Then you can go about installing blobs and whatnot to make it work with less pain.
I don't have a hybrid to test on, but I suspect there's a setting to say "disable my nvidia stuff...just use the intel". Boot. Install blobs. Reboot. Turn it back on. Dance widdershins and pray. <-- would be my approach.

3:50 PM
Nope. Integrated display is hardwired to the Intel card, as far as I can tell. Haven't seen any option in the BIOS either.
That's the case for my laptop, at least. Not sure about the reporter's.

I'm sorry. MSI is usually better about stuff like that.

(Mine's an acer, I'm not the reporter ;) )

Can someone Help me out?
I am installing Lubuntu 13.10 and while installation, when we do partitions, I can't find my HDD. My Older Lubuntu was crashed because of zram. Any Help would be appreciated
and when I try to open, my HDD, I see this error
Error mounting /dev/sda7 at /media/lubuntu/a5921cad-a3c3-4b4e-8632-09100530a403: Command-line `mount -t "ext4" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid" "/dev/sda7" "/media/lubuntu/a5921cad-a3c3-4b4e-8632-09100530a403"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda7,
       missing codepage or helper program, or other error
       In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail  or so

@Windows8 Well, try dmesg | tail then ;)
That said, the reason is probably that the target partition isn't actually ext4, despite the system trying to mount it as such.

Sounds like you're either using some abstraction layer - luks or lvm for example, partition magic hasn't been written yet, or it's ext3 and you're trying to mount it as 4. you can mount newer ext as older iirc, but not vice-versa

3:55 PM
@hbdgaf What happens for me is that, when trying to boot for install, the integrated display turns off (presumably because of hybrid graphics) and the boot crashes with divide error 0000 [#1] SMP. I can solve the display problem by plugging in an external display (and later-on fixing the driver settings), but the crash is not fixable in saucy - from what the launchpad entry tells me, at least.

I think the root of the problem is trying to default to performance in edge/non-lts and defaulting to stable/intel in going to be lts.
You can't blame them really.

@hbdgaf but how?

@Windows8 how what?

@hbdgaf the answer you gave me, how to mount as ex3?
i mean ex4
@hbdgaf I ran dmesg and saw this paste.ubuntu.com/6697675

@Windows8 mount as ext3 or ext2 and see what happens. if you don't get bad superblock and it mounts than you're using the wrong partition type.

4:04 PM
@hbdgaf I assume he's using the GUI during install.

@FEichinger yes i am using GUI,
@hbdgaf okay i am trying

Question is: Why does the GUI think it's the wrong fs type? Which I have absolutely no answer to, unless you messed some settings up.

I don't use it, so I can't tell you how to fix it. It's like a cook telling a mechanic how to fix a car.

@hbdgaf And doing that on the phone.

@FEichinger yes

4:18 PM
@hbdgaf Can you tell me what would YOU do in this situation, if your PC crashed, you can't open your HDD and can't install any OS on a newly bought machine?

I'd try and figure out why I can't open the HDD.

I wouldn't wind up in that situation because I only use things I understand.

That would stink.
Like major-league-suck

You must have messed up something and without seeing your machine we just can't know what that is.

@RPiAwesomeness I don't see Ubuntu mentioned anywhere...

@RPiAwesomeness Seems like it.
@FEichinger Are you still a bridge reserve officer?

@Seth Reserve, as in "currently not ownerified".

Ah. Okay. I thought reserve meant you were still an owner.

No, no, That would just be "Bridge Officer".

@JasperLoy What version of GNOME exactly?

@Seth I think GNOME 3.8 and 3.10 both give problems. Hi!
I tried on Fedora as well, the same problem with the ATI radeon machine.
So if the trend continues, GNOME is unusable.
I get weird big triangles flashing over the screen, lol.
