Me neither, but GNOME 3.8 looked pretty nice.
I'm using it now, actually, on 12.10. The System Settings keep crashing when I try to adjust anything x(

I don't know if I... hack or just tweak and play with things until it's rendered useless or awesome.

friends i've installed GNOME on my laptop

Hacker may refer to: The Jargon File contains a bunch of definitions of the term ‘hacker’, most having to do with technical adeptness and a delight in solving problems and overcoming limits. If you want to know how to become a hacker, though, only two are really relevant. There is a community, a shared culture, of expert programmers and networking wizards that traces its history back through decades to the first time-sharing minicomputers and the earliest ARPAnet experiments. The members of this culture originated the term ‘hacker’. Hackers built the Internet. Hackers made the Unix oper...

That's a long meta post.

@jokerdino I'm trying to reply now

All the best. I haven't read more than the first line yet -.-

I re-read it a few times. I think I know the jist of what he's asking

a) He's confused about just what Meta is.
b) He is disappointed he doesn't get an answer to his question.

Q: Is Ask Ubuntu an Ubuntu Q&A site for everyone?

geezanansaFirstly I would like to define which kind of Ubuntu user I am; (which could be described as an unqualified; unprofessional or amateur user), a home user and am attempting to describe and define my concerns regarding a new user intending to use Ask Ubuntu in order to enable the better and fuller u...

3:34 PM
That Meta Q probably requires a lengthy introduction to how AU really works, an explanation of why there might not be a sufficient answer to his Main Q, and an explanation of what that tag synonym stuff is about - and why it was locked.
The whole wording with "Is AU a QA for everyone?" just makes it seem like a passive-aggressive rant, though.

^^ Agree. I don't want to read the other answers, someone just remote in to my box and fix this for me for free type of thing.

Didn't this user also ask another meta question?
Yep:
2
Q: Are EFI/UEFI installation type of question appropriate at Ask Ubuntu?

geezanansaSearching ubuntu-12-10 install uefi gives a google page of Ask Ubuntu Q&A all pointing to same recommendation. (which is make a grub-efi partition before trying to install) Have asked this type of Q myself (which is How to EFI install Ubuntu 12.10?) and the solution of making a grub-efi partition...

With a name like geeznanza and harping on UEFI... draw your own conclusions.

Dang, Luis beat me to an answer
This user is going to get two big ass answers I guess

We'll see.

3:44 PM
Anyone know why DX4 was abandoned? It came out of Debian and Ubuntu repositories, but a bounty question has an answer with it. Does it just need packaging and a ppa or what?

appears
any pythonistas here?

A: GraphAPIError: (#324) Requires upload file

Pratik PatelI used this library to encode the image: http://atlee.ca/software/poster/ Add this to facebook.py: from poster.encode import * from poster.streaminghttp import register_openers def put_photo(self, source, album_id=None, message=""): object_id = album_id or "me" register_openers() ...

@CallmeV nope. It's only when uploading JPGs

Then go around it and turn them in to PNGs before you upload...

and on png's
It does not seem to upload them
I cant see them on fb

3:50 PM
Whew, that was a lot of typing

@AmithKK I'm done. Read the error. It's obviously not uploading them

@MarcoCeppi Is that really Mark Shuttleworth? I guess there isn't any reason it wouldn't be...

@Seth it is him

@CallmeV No error
I can post my facebook.py after modification from that post

Don't be a pain. You posted the error.

3:52 PM
Ok sorry. I'll post it on SO

@Suhaib Allow me to now slap you for trying once again to boost your edits by doing an invalid one.
2
perhaps i'm just tired, but I see ZERO reference to 13.04 ANYWHERE in that.
Lrn 2 Not Do Invalid Edits.
also Lrn 2 Not Rep Farm.

You are being... kinda... mean. And I've told you that before.

@Seth tired of seeing the rep farming and the invalid edits. this is the, what, sixth invalid edit i've rejected from them?

Well I jumped the gun on it, but it seems my suppositions might have been correct...anyway, moving on.

I know, I could be nicer.

3:56 PM
@TheLordofTime That's none of your business... Just keep rejecting.

today's a bad day (no sleep because the fire alarms sounded and we were stuck outside in the cold for three hours while the apartment complex was checked by the fire dept.)

If he keeps getting edits rejected he'll get edit banned.
I think. He would on other sites.
BTW, that's his only edit all day.. So I don't know where you're getting this six or seven idea..

wow. play nice folks.

@Seth not in a row ... probably over time and the question implications from earlier this week

@TheLordofTime I gotta say ... I can't find any edits by that user that you rejected.

4:03 PM
@CallmeV Doesn't change anything.

they've been rep farming with edits, and have done invalid edits (when I've hit reject, it was likely already rejected when I got to it)
in any case...

Q: Install php 5 on a fresh installation

Gaurav SharmaI have a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 and I'd like to get PHP to work. I've tried sudo apt-get install apache2 sudo apt-get install php5 sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-php5 sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart but when I navigate to http://localhost/ all I see is the the Firefox error ...

^ EOL Release related question

@TheLordofTime it has an accepted answer. i'ld let it go

... oops I close voted, forgot to look @ the date.
perhaps we should add to the FAQ a blurb that says "Don't necromance old things, if you have a new answer, especially for EOL releases"

@TheLordofTime Patience. Paaaatience.

4:14 PM
whispers rawr

@TheLordofTime No excuse for being rude. Quite rude. That is the point. What do you care they are rep farming? You haven't given any evidence... Anyway, I'm done.

@TheLordofTime Nothing wrong with necromancy at all.

necromancer badge says hi.

@jokerdino 'xactly.

@TheLordofTime, thanks for the slap. The reason I suggested this edit is that I have installed 13.04 and it has exactly the same problem, using the 12.10 solution the problem disappeared, So i decided to edit the question to include 13.04. it "WAS A SUGGESTION", its not like I would accept my edit :-s
I think you should take a break from askubuntu. it will really help :-|

Transcript is broken.

How is this different from the one I made in this question ?

review the edits in the Question and you will know why I made that edit

Just?

@Suhaib Personally, I comment with something like "This bug/issue also evidences in version XYZ"

@CallmeV But what if someone seached for 13.04 Virtual box slow ?
My comment would not really help him
That is why you need to edit the title

The OP can edit it in if they want to or if the answer received fixes both. And no you don't. You changed the meaning of the question.

Well I changed the meaning of the IE9,8,7 question, No one rejected my edit
is it ok to remove the 12.04 tag from the "how to install IE9" ?
Because I think it is not really necessary
rails too ?

I think you either get the point or you're trying not to. I made my side of the discussion apparent. You get it or you don't. /discussion on my end

heeeey now. let's relax a bit.

4:30 PM
I'm relaxed. I'm just walking away before I get mean ;)

@jokerdino, I know man. But these two are bugging me since 2 days ago

Q: Ubuntu: How do the md devices get assembled at bootup?

0xC0000022LHow do the md devices get assembled at bootup in Ubuntu? Is /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf truly the relevant factor here? My t-shirt arrived. :D

lol, Isn't that a warning that you need to take some rest ? :-p

4:32 PM
Mine still in transit? D:
@Suhaib the idea is to make the experience of everyone better.
i mean, you would want to know why your edits were rejected, etc.

Ya ofcourse, I don't want to bother you at all. I just thought it was a legit edit

@FEichinger We have tshirts?

no no. you can't bother me unless i want to be.

I didn't get the email!

Email?

4:35 PM
Mail?

Oh I did
Crap

@AmithKK E>

@jokerdino Well, it got through customs as "documents" :P

@FEichinger Whooo. Hopefully, same here.
@Suhaib usually, we want to move away from restricting questions to a specific version, etc
so, we remove version-tags when it is not specific to a version. sames goes to title.

I submitted it
Hope I get a askubuntu shirt this time :)

4:38 PM
see if you get any reply. it might be too late

The email got stuck in beetween the newsletters
I wonder why Gmail didn't give it a priority rating

@jokerdino, Can I/you remove the ruby and 12.04 tags from this question ?

@AmithKK It exists.

@FEichinger I saw it.
Last time, I got a SE one :)

It's a Q&A site about ubuntu.

Q: What technical reasons are there to have low maximum password lengths?

enderlandI have always wondered why so many websites have very firm restrictions on password length (exactly 8 characters, up to 8 characters, etc). These tend to be banks or other sites I actually care about security. I understand most people will pick short passwords like "password" and "123456" but ar...

Q: Weird issue with unmet dependencies when cloning package states from earlier installation on same machine

Hi, folks, can someone help me with which seems to be a stupid question? I have downloaded apache-maven-3.0.5-bin.tar.gz and extracted in /opt/ but, when I'm trying to run the maven command, it only runs when I prepend "./", otherwise the command is not recognized. Could anyone help me?

fred@Fred-Ubuntu:/opt/apache-maven-3.0.5/bin$ mvn -version
The program 'mvn' can be found in the following packages:
* maven
* maven2
Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>

fred@Fred-Ubuntu:/opt/apache-maven-3.0.5/bin$ ./mvn -version

i am curious why you didn't want to download from the repository?

@fredzvt Why not install maven from the archive instead of compiling it?

that's what I meant ^^

Because i'm having internet problems and if I had installed it by apt-get it will try to download 194MB when I already had the tar.gz in my machine.
Sorry for my bad english, I'm brazillian.

5:50 PM
Your english is perfectly fine. :)
The issue is that the directory where you installed is not in your path.
let me explain.

Thanks, Mahesh! I'm happy to know! :D

whenever you type just a command, the shell has to decide what to do.
one sec. on a call.

Did anyone update firefox to version 20 ?

Yes, it is on path, look:

fred@Fred-Ubuntu:/opt/apache-maven-3.0.5/bin$ echo $PATH
/usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:$HOME/bin:$JAVA_HOME/bin:$JRE_HOME/bin:$M2_HOME/bin:$CATALINA_HOME/bin

fred@Fred-Ubuntu:/opt/apache-maven-3.0.5/bin$ echo $M2_HOME
/opt/apache-maven-3.0.5

@Suhaib you mean the devs or the users?

5:54 PM
@jokerdino users.

no. i am still on v 16

@jokerdino lol ? Mine is still 19
How can I update it ?

waiting for 13.04 to release so i can torrent it and install it over.
@Suhaib i suppose it is in archive already. just apt-get update and such stuff.

Even when the terminal is at the bin folder, the command mvn only runs if I prepend it with "./".

@jokerdino, I did that. still 19
Is there another method ?

5:56 PM
give it some time. it might not made it to the archive server you are usign.

@fredzvt if it is in the path, it should run even when not qualified with path.
I'm not sure if $PATH respects variables inside it.
can someone confirm?

That's what I've expected. But even when I'm at the directory bin the "mvn" command don't work, only "./mvn".

@fredzvt The current directory (.) is not on the path by default. and you have not added it.

aha, kk. Just for the sake of learning, Do you know of any other method ? I know in virtual box you install the new .deb and it will be upgraded automatically @jokerdino

so the directory you are in does not matter.
if it is in the path, it works. else, it wont.

5:59 PM
@Suhaib there are many other methods but none i can recommend over the default one.

@jokerdino oh, I got your point
