I'm looking for a progress bar fully open-source so I can us it free and without naming the author name. If someone knows, tell me :)
I found it here \o/

12:33 AM
I would recommend making one yourself.
Heck, you can even make one with CSS and JS.
If you aren't good at using graphics programs, that is. :P

Q: When do comments disappear?

DaimyoKirbyI was browsing the main AU site, when I chanced upon the following comment in the question Why can't I turn on recommendations in software center?: Please provide additional information only by editing your question and not within a comment. Comments might/will eventually be deleted and so yo...

12:51 AM
@Seth you may delete your comment now :P

1:11 AM
@GeorgeEdison - you're changing it to NathanOsman? lord...I suppose I'm going to be torn between my name and the other name I most recently used.

1 hour later…
2:13 AM
@FEichinger Where?

Also, it only takes a couple of flags to auto-delete a comment. — Seth 2 hours ago

Hmm..
Why? Just to humor you? :P

@Seth No, because it is indeed obsolete. :P

I guess.
Okay done...
Eliah's comment disappeared too..

@Seth I removed it when I saw yours was gone. It didn't make very much sense without yours. :)

2:23 AM
No, I'm sure it didn't ;)

3:22 AM
appears
Good for you @GeorgeEdison

runs and hides

@GeorgeEdison Good thing I gave up sansui12
How did I get that anyway?
I guess it's from registering to Nickelodeon's website

I love gmail watcher.

On the no Unity criticism until he's done with it thing, there's a two pronged response:

It was incredibly smart to force it possibly pre-maturely into 12.04 to force the community to adopt non-LTS releases to test it as it is developed/ironed out.

It was incredibly not as smart to frustrate many users by pushing it possibly pre-maturely in to LTS.

@CallmeV Well I've never used 12.04...

3:29 AM
It's what I run on my daily driver, but I adopted openbox

Why was that anyway? Openbox just looks too ugly for me...

Graphics computing intensity
I'ld rather have performant and not runs hot. It stopped most of the flash tearing too

I guess if I had an older graphics card I might use it just to save power...
@CallmeV Interesting.

Yes. Tells me some of the screen tearing is flash getting deferred processing behind the WM even if the window is maximized

Yep.

3:34 AM
It's not an underpowered laptop really. I can run Ubu standard in VM with 3d without horrible lag. It just runs hot if I use Unity as my primary. I can pause the VM. I can't tell the WM to simma-down

Yes.. That would be a nice feature.

Bah 13.04 Beta 2 not going out
Annoucement!
For at least 8 hours or so
;P

Wait, wut?
Beta 1 just came out...

@Seth That's three WEEKS ago:P

Really?

3:40 AM
@Seth Yeah.

Q: Where can I download the Beta 1 release for Ubuntu 13.04?

John HillAccording to the 13.04 release schedule, the Beta 1 release for 13.04 was made available today (April 4). Does anyone know where I can download it? Thanks!

o_O

Yesterday (4/4/2013) was supposed to be Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) release day.

Oh yeah.. It was.

@smartboyhw was

@AmithKK Yep. But then it still hasn't been released now:P
The Canonical IS forgotten to change links for ubuntu.com/testing/download
That's killing everything (currently)

3:42 AM
Where did you find this out??
I have found NO links anywhere to any Vanilla 13.04 anything.

@Seth Gah #ubuntu-release in the IRC channel

/me is coming.

@Seth I am not supposed to provide any download links:)

Err, if it's a private beta then it's not released yet.

3:44 AM
Just browse the cdimage.ubuntu.com folders...that's what I do

That is the point.

@CallmeV Uh hum you do know people get bans for sharing the download links?
I mean in the last 12.10 release in the #ubuntu-release-party IRC channel
I just fired an thread at UbuntuKylin forums about that
Since they have been announcing

@smartboyhw ? I'm not sure I follow what you mean ?

@CallmeV Look at my second sentence

I'm so lost.
BTW I see a lot of AU users on IRC.

3:45 AM
At the final release of 12.10 people were celebrating the 12.10 release in the IRC channel. However since they are sharing the download links before the official announcement, they get banned from the channel
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER share download links before it is OFFICIALLLY announced by the Ubuntu Release Team

oooohh. got it. i just check cdimage for whatever i'm looking for. if it's not there, then it's daily-build i'm really after

I still don't "got it"..
I was told beta 1 was out today.
And that there isn't a Vanilla Beta 1.

@Seth 1. It's Beta 2
@Seth And secondly, it hasn't been OFFICIALLY announced

@smartboyhw Then it isn't there... So your comment makes no sense to an "outsider"

@Seth What comment?

3:50 AM
It IS released. Beta 2 hasn't been released yet. — smartboyhw 8 mins ago
Am I still lost?

@Seth I am correct I think.

IF a Vanilla beta 1 was released where is the download link? I couldn't find one..

Seems like I saw something in the beta2 folder possibly by accident in the last couple of days, but I could be mistaken.

@AmithKK: It's for sale in India now.

@GeorgeEdison It was from release date man :)

3:54 AM
@AmithKK I don't think so.

@GeorgeEdison I posted a screenshot yesterday that says otherwise :)

I saw that.
If you clicked the '+' sign, it would have probably told you that it wasn't for sale in your country.

Nope
It took me to Google Wallet

Wha... that's weird.
Well, anyway - it's definitely for sale now.

"For sale" in play does not mean that it was not previously available I guess

3:55 AM
I've sold two so far. So I've made a grand total of $2.80 :)

It's actually enabling the listing.

Remember the "where the phone is registered" oddity. If he got it from wirefly or something that would explain that away. Just a theory.

@CallmeV All my assosciated phones are indian, google is set to india

Yeah - it's just weird. Oh well.

@GeorgeEdison Hold some contest. I want it for free :P

3:57 AM
shrugs

@AmithKK We'll see.

Yesterday, searching for gitdroid returned nothing
today it does

Yeah, I noticed that too.
I've been discussing the app on Reddit, and managed to talk at least one person into buying it.

I'm getting an Android 4.2 device soon enough
@GeorgeEdison What if you get an XDA feature?

My slider phone runs an OLD android version (2.3.6)

3:59 AM
@CallmeV Same on my Galaxy Y

I started writing the app targeting 2.3... but that slipped to 3.0... and then 4.0...

@AmithKK Same on my Galaxy Pocket

I think Samsung just version froze for whatever reason on most of their phones.

@CallmeV Same here.

4:02 AM
everbody +1 this :)

@AmithKK Hey... thanks!

It's not compatible with my phone, though I don't need it anyway.
My phone isn't compatible with anything ;)
@smartboyhw So I'm still wondering.. If Vanilla 13.04 beta 1 has been released where is the public link?

@Seth Why don't you tell them just wait for Beta 2?
It is coming, just in a few hours though

@smartboyhw Because that wasn't the question maybe??

@Seth What's the question again?

4:06 AM
Where can I download Ubuntu 13.04 beta 1 (Vanilla preferably).
I said (after confirmation from Jorge) that it hasn't been released yet, you told me it has been..
@RolandiXor If you're watching the transcript why don't you pop in? :)

@Seth Whoa I might get a bit of eyesight problems
/me deletes the comment:O
@Seth that question needs an edit

@smartboyhw Thank you.

@Seth and you DO know this question IS offtopic right?

I was really confused.
@smartboyhw Well.. More or less but not exactly.

@Seth Why?

4:09 AM
+5! Yeah!

Well it's not about using Ubuntu 13.04 but about downloading it.
Rather big difference there IMO.
@AmithKK I only see +4..

Wait for it :P

@Seth Hmm doesn't downloading it also is offtopic?
Just the same as how to upgrade

ADHD - HEY SQUIRREL - So I started plinking around on reversing SE beta. pretty basic questions so far.

@smartboyhw Well I don't agree myself.
No one has VTC'd it...

4:11 AM
@Seth What is VTC'd ?

Vote To Close 'ed it.

@Seth Has anyone flagged it then?

No one has cast a close vote on the question.

nobody voted to close it so it's on topic isn't a super-valid argument...

@smartboyhw I can't tell.
@CallmeV No it's not.
A bigger argument is both Jorge and Eliah were fine with it.

4:13 AM
And also, strange that he will mark it as "upgrade". Although image IS supported, I rather want a software updater thing.

@Seth That Jorge was okay with it is an indicator. I sometimes think Eliah want's everything to be on-topic
2

@CallmeV Really? LOL.

I think he was okay with it because it will by cut and dry answerable at some point in the nearish future.
@Seth see:
Mar 30 at 17:52, by FEichinger
@Seth I got Eliah'd.

The thing with Eliah is that he gets insanely elaborate, sticks to his point and crushes you if you so much as disagree.

Uh, I saw that.

4:16 AM
While I appreciate that in a person in general, it can be extremely frustrating when it comes to stuff like this.
@CallmeV Notice the @Seth in what you quoted? :P

Yes. That's part of why it was a funny reminder.

@FEichinger I got pinged with that @Seth in code..

@Seth I know..

@FEichinger Crushes you with good arguments.. even if you disagree. He does get pretty elaborate.. Too much for me most of the time. I like to think I stick to my point too though :P

I don't think it's necessarily elaborate. Just verbose with lots of minutiae. Where I tend to leave a two liner if I can distill it to that... I don't feel a need to put pages of tick marks down to beat a point to death.

4:19 AM
You know I bet he's watching you :P

Oh, I'm sure he is fully aware of this.

It's fine. I'ld say the same if he responded.

I just tend to disagree with Eliah on a lot of things, but I just see no point arguing it. On the off chance that a meta vote is decisive in this regard, you still have an argument beforehand that just felt ... dirty.
It boils down to a moot point very early, yet you either keep arguing or just hide and leave it be.
Neither of which make for a healthy discussion.

The funny thing is, I like him, but I (very) often disagree with him too..

That's because, more often than not, Eliah is very ... let's call it liberal, when it comes to what is or is not in the bounds of AU policy.

4:23 AM
I just gloss over more. The more things become marginally on-topic the less useful the site becomes, so the faster my eyes gloss over when being helpful on the QA side. I don't argue the point any more, my contributions are just substantially less.

With the reasoning that we are supposed to think in favour of our community first.

I could discuss this, but I don't want to. So I'm done. I will say I tend to lean towards "let it be" myself.

Exactly. We're arriving at the same place.

@CallmeV This is something that shouldn't happen, though. Really shouldn't happen.

I need to find something to answer...

4:26 AM
I answered a couple on RE today... that was my good deed

I answered something on meta today.
That's ... about all I do anyways.

I answered two things on meta today :P
@FEichinger Why is that?

@Seth I tend to use Ubuntu less, because I'm waiting and thinking about where I'm heading next. I'm almost certain I'm not gonna stick with main Ubuntu.

Why is that? (You saw it coming!)

Combine that with me not really bothering to do research on a lot of things that I know I can kinda answer, but would probably take longer than the first half-arsed answer anyway ... Well, yeh.
@Seth Because I disagree with a lot surrounding 13.04. More and more. Just not what I came for.

4:30 AM
Heh OK.

4:44 AM
Silence is the lack of audible sound or presence of sounds of very low intensity. By analogy, the word silence can also refer to any absence of communication, including in media other than speech. Silence is also used as total communication, in reference to non verbal communication and spiritual connection. Silence also refers to no sounds uttered by anybody in a room or area. Silence is an important factor in many cultural spectacles, as in rituals. In discourse analysis, speakers use brief absences of speech to mark the boundaries of prosodic units. Silence in speech can be hesitation...

BANG! CRASH! HULLABALOO!

@Seth No.

??

@Seth because I'm not :)

4:47 AM
@GeorgeEdison So??

I look for flags, I rarely enter chat these days.

@RolandiXor Just wondering :)
@RolandiXor I know :(

@GeorgeEdison Sweet! :P

@Seth I need it! That's the official Qt documentation!

And now I'm about to leave again :P

4:47 AM
@RolandiXor Nooooooo!

@GeorgeEdison yes!

@RolandiXor BTW - did you see my announcement?

(Complicated matter - but being introverted)
@GeorgeEdison about your app?

About changing my name.

You have now :P

Ohhh

@RolandiXor :(:(:(:(:(:(:(

Cool :)
@Seth sorry lol, just need some time to recharge.
And avoiding large crowds also == happiness because it is less chance for social mistakes :)

Social mistakes are awesome.

@FEichinger no, they are not. I made one tonight (today really) with someone on G+ and it kinda threw my otherwise good night off.
Anyway TMI!
adios!

Bye..

The way out is to use the marker you have to add a box that says 'get a marker' to the line between you and 'start', then add a 'no' line from the trap box to 'end'.

Stack Exchange just posted that all by itself.

Good.

Q: Should I ask and answer a question that I feel would be useful on Ask Ubuntu, but that's already on Super User?

strugeeA while back I had a problem with bash, which I then Googled and solved. There's already a question on Super User with my problem. That being said, I feel like it would be valuable information to have on Ask Ubuntu. Should I ask (and then answer) a duplicate of the Super User question on Ask Ubu...

Guidelines to keep you safe Keep your desktop and Forge keystrokes as if the package is still in the Gitorious configuration Lets copy the sample configuration files to the correct path: ln -s /var/www/gitorious/script/gitorious /usr/bin .
Need to make sure we have all these packages, you will be asked to save a tar.gz file with your username and password and type in y-ppa-manager You'll be presented with it To install it sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/y-ppa-manager and sudo apt-get update and are enabled. Also, try disabling some less powerful DE's such as Xubuntu/XFCE Xubuntu is lightweight and contains a shell to gtk3, much like Gnome Shell is.

Bah the release announcement for Beta 2 went out (strangely) and the people of the Ubuntu Release Team told me not to make any flavours announcement ...

@smartboyhw :P

@AmithKK Yeah. Extremely weird
I think the release team notices somebody approved the Ubuntu release announcement to the mailing list without approval from the Release Team
Anyways:)

11:04 AM
Damn.. just got @jrg's LoTR reference yesterday.

@AmithKK What's LoTR?

O.o
Lord of The Rings.

@AmithKK Why you need a reference from @jrg?

Oh, he referenced to something from that, and I didn't get it

@AmithKK Ah.

Oli
11:22 AM
@AmithKK Where are you sourcing the updates (the photos, messages, etc) from?

@Oli The Graph API of course
check this out

Oli
11:42 AM
@AmithKK PythonForFacebook looks like an interesting library. Here's their sample for creating a news feed: github.com/pythonforfacebook/facebook-sdk/blob/master/examples/…
If you can get that far, I doubt it would be much of a strain to filter to photo posts and then it's just display stuff.

Its not really getting the data that bothers me.
Its the transitions, text display and stuff
@Oli it's also for text posts

Oli
That's the easy bit! There are tons of frameworks for doing fancy display stuff. Check out Kivy. It's pretty new and I'm yet to use it properly but it claims to be able to build to Android (which is what piqued my interest originally)
But Qt/QML and HTML5/JS are distinct possibilities too.

but can kivy work on the Rpi?

@Oli I really like Kivy, but it's not packaged for anything...

Oli
@AmithKK Pass. I thought it was a fairly standard Python stack so probably.

11:50 AM
@AmithKK It builds as a library for android and iOS so... it should.

Ugh

Oli
It's not even slightly a standard python stack it turns out - a lot of stuff is compiled down C and OpenGL stuff. I'm honestly not sure how far you'll get but it's all open source.

Just looked at my feed
I don't think a good portion of it is parent friendly
and hence cannot be displayed on the tv lol

@Oli Yes, It's OpenGLES and loads of other C libraries with a pretty abstraction layer on top. I played with it a while back.

12:06 PM
@AmithKK the project front-page lists a funding drive for porting it to Raspberry Pi
That would hint that it doesn't yet work there

What is the easiest to learn?

It works, but it's slow. Here's a thread where they talk about it: raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=68&t=8653

12:25 PM
do we have a canonical missing .so file question? if we don't we should...

12:41 PM
I like it... it's the feature request bounty system: bountysource.com

10 days to ship from US to India
sane?

Yes sane. It's 5 days or more to ship from-to continental US.

"Who can create a bounty?
Anybody with a PayPal account. We’ll be supporting other payment methods (including Google Wallet and Bitcoins) very soon!"
BTC as a currency for getting open-source stuff done is a very alluring idea

Crap.. Patience required

@DanHulme Yes. I was discussing in here a while ago how launchpad having bugfix/feature request bounties would be epic. Looks like somebody built it, so now it's a cross-linking integration problem not a build it problem.

Oli
12:50 PM
It's hard to take BTC seriously when its value changes in huge amounts every other week. It's desirable for currencies to have the same real-world value indefinitely. While people trade it expecting to make a quick buck, it's never going to work.

@MarcoCeppi wtf?

Yeah, hedge funds and US trading companies getting in to the bitcoin game are messing with the price. Trading houses here already inflated the price of everything else unreasonably. They will never learn.

I hope you can pay in fractions of a bitcoin

My friend got me in to mining when it first came out. I quickly gave up because meh

Trying to figure out the compute power vs trade off for mining on EC2
If you can get one bitcoin an hour, and only need to run ~50 high compute instances to get it

removed

then it's still profitable

Oli
AFAIK the only way it really pays for itself is through fairly beefy OpenCL/CUDA computation on graphics cards. I still don't think CPU-only workloads are economical.

I should up the priority of my "add a donate bitcoins button" task
@Oli FPGA mining too

12:56 PM
@Oli EC2 has GPU instances

iirc it's a fractional gpu and relatively expensive. gpgpu type of thing

and I believe a vendor is offering an ASIC miner now

didn't a bitcoin wallet provider just get breached and mtgox go down for a period of time? i think so...

but really the most cost-effective mining method currently is hijacking people's GPUs

I'd love to become a bitcoin slumlord/miner
@DanHulme EVEN BETTER
All profits. Time to go find a bot net

12:58 PM
problem is a lot of windows drivers disable opencl out of the box

Oli
@DanHulme Indeed. Stealing them straight off people's computers is another good technique too.

I know of one company that has a f2p game where you get in-game rewards for donating your GPU time to their miner

Oli
@DanHulme Smart

If only I was good at game design and development

I hate that point where you've been working on so many different projects that you've got 20 instances of a text editor and twice as many terminal windows open that you just have to ragequit the whole lot.

lol
sounds like me when I'm doing homework

Oli gratz on 60k :=)
and a question @oli ... are 12.04 and 12.10 not the same?

Oli
@Rinzwind Not quite there yet but thank you. And what do you mean not the same? Did I say they were?

well you just told someone who is using 12.04 and wants to know if 12.10 works to download the live cd and try it.
I would assume if it already works on 12.04 it will also work on 12.10(?)
hence my question >:)
IN OTHER NEWS: new Ubuntu T-shirts :D omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/04/…

1:21 PM
aww. they don't sell older ones
I'd LOVE the one with paws

Oli
@Rinzwind Oh I see - they're asking if it'll keep working after an upgrade. Release upgrades have broken things for some people in the past (kernel upgrades, etc) so if you want to test the full stack before actually committing to changing things on your install, you can play around with a Live environment. It's an intel stack so there aren't any other drivers to worry about.

yes they do: shop.canonical.com/index.php?cPath=14 @JourneymanGeek

Wasn't there already a question that just linked to Ubuntu Certified hardware to dupe it towards?
there. done.

Oli
@Rinzwind Awesome. It's a shame that when things like this inevitably happen that all manufacturers just drop secure boot (or HDCP - which is also thoroughly broken). It would make life a lot easier than trying to play along with this security theatre.

security by obscurity only works until someone outsmarts the security

It's just one of those things. Saying we shouldn't have UEFI because someone got a key stolen is a bit like saying we shouldn't have CAs for SSL or certificates for code-signing drivers. Just saying.

oh but those should leave the internet too :-D

1:32 PM
Well Beta 2 is OFFICIALLY out now (just got confirmation from the Ubuntu Release Team)

@Rinzwind I see your point, but there are two sides to that thing with relatively equal merits. Business/money controls which way it goes instead of idealism, so we see where the decisions come down.

I know :D But it would be nice if we could do without...

Oli
Sort of but not quite. CAs can be (and are occasionally) revoked, spoiling any fraudulent certificates. Updates are pushed to make this work retroactively.

I was under the impression that UEFI was a lot more static in terms of trusted signers. New computers might revoke the old key but for anybody else, a hacker can write all over their boot settings. It's hard to justify the pain it causes when it's such a weak-ass system in the first place.
And you can just pay Microsoft to sign your key too. Creates a paper trail but it's pretty weak security.

Fair points, but I can't see being unable to modify a CRL on disk.
I think as it matures, we'll see more "site signing certificates" for validated blobs for high secure environments (which tbh was probably the goal anyway). You can't make manufacturers include TPMs in all their boards, but you can get UEFI mostly across the board
