12:16 AM
@GeorgeEdison why would AU need questions on windows installer?

Someone needs to write a userscript to rewrite all the stack exchange banners in snarky language an post screenshots.

Off-site of course, but it would be great for the lol.
@JourneymanGeek I have one on installing python in wine
@jrg they obviously should have let the pros at SE handle things...

12:31 AM
Given the importance of moderator elections, I move to post "Election ^^" 8 times and have it pinned on the right.

Election ^^

Come on Seth, 7 more. I'll burn stars for this

Election ^^
5

Not saying it will get pinned...but

I'll do one more
Election ^^
5

12:35 AM
Wait

waits

Do we have one more taker? I need one for a recursion joke?

No one else here.

/me is le sad

Election ^^
7

12:37 AM
there appears to be a third person too
'cause Journeyman can't star his own

and it got 3
hey, that someone removed their star...

Now there are two seth stars...of which there only need be one
3,2,1 thing
wait what?

this is weird.

someone is goofing

12:41 AM
yes

there...

there we go again
I bet its either jrg or joker

okay, lets try again,
Election ^^
4
@AbrahamVanHelpsing don't star my last message
3
this is a test

methinks if someone stars all of them it will fix the ordering
i give up on the recursion joke.

12:44 AM
2 messages moved from Ubuntu Regulators
@AbrahamVanHelpsing someone is really messing with this.

rawr, just rawr. i wish i had enough socks to fix it, but i don't

ah well.
I've got another test

@Seth what was it?

@jokerdino So it was you :P

huh?
I am barely awake.

12:55 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing and I were playing a game with stars

i was trying to get a star recursion joke in the star pane...while expressing the importance of elections. someone was goofing with making it not work

someone kept messing it up.
Anyway, just got my other test going. We'll see what happens.

lol
I am so hungry. brb

Oh great. I forgot a closing bracket :/

Price is epic...fighting urge to drive to warehouse to pick one up tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/…

12:58 AM
oh wow.

1:11 AM
it trumps my current lappie and comes close (except for GPU) to trumping my previous desktop. have i mentioned i want a desktop, but won't risk it?

I wouldn't risk it.
Someone fixed the stars it looks like

1:36 AM
@vasa1 I noticed Retext automatically saves files with .mkd extension. Do you get that too?

IIRC, retext handles markdown files
I think it is logical to save it as .mkd.

okay. github think md is markdown though...

i prefer mkd though. md is too simplistic

I like mkd better too.
shrug

consistency. like people consistently going through your belongings. as long as you know it's coming, it's okay

1:39 AM
lol

okay??

I thought fans might get a chuckle out of how obvious it was...

2:20 AM
later folks.

jrg
2:42 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing i don't know, they really need to get suggested edits up-and-running.
because as a guy who has to camp in the fedora camp for a few weeks, i am really going to get sick of improperly coded markdown.
oh man, thats sad.
there are 5 people on their front page of users who are at 1K+ rep.
i've seen beta sites after 1 day with more rep.

Hello, epoptes is not working with ubuntu and raspberry pi

jrg
1. how did you get ubuntu on the pi?

when I try to fetch the certificate it says connection refused
i did not
the server is ubuntu
and the pi running raspbian is the client

jrg
ah, ok

what do i do?

2:48 AM
@jrg: markdown isn't too well standardised

jrg
so i recommend you ask that question on serverfault, or Unix & Linux.

ok

even on SE, I seem to think there's two different ways to do a link for example

jrg
@JourneymanGeek but when the command has underscores, STICK IT IN A FREAKIN CODE BLOCK
so your snake_case_command doesn't look like snake case command.
i can't even replicate it here.

jrg
3:04 AM
ask.fedoraproject.org/question/3918/… < basically, that guys command.

3:22 AM
Hey @jrg @JourneymanGeek

@JourneymanGeek I'm going after your rep in PURE Ask Ubuntu:P (Not including your big reputation in whole SE)
Election^^
I voted already:)

@smartboyhw: I don't get this whole wanting to torpedo candidates ;p

@JourneymanGeek LOL

first my flags (which have tripled over the last week), now this
I mean, if you want me to pull out or something...
I mean, someone's already pulled out my days on site, my flags...

3:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek How serious do you consider this position?

@Seth: If I didn't, I wouldn't be standing for it

@JourneymanGeek Sure 39:P right?

@smartboyhw: and counting

Now now now don't talk about the election here:P
@JourneymanGeek so you're catching up my flags while I am catching up your rep:P
(LOL)

3:29 AM
@smartboyhw been retagging lately?

@jrg move @seth's line to the election chatroom please
@Seth Got the enough rep

@smartboyhw: my rep gain is not too spectacular. I haven't hit that point yet

@smartboyhw lol, I know. I cast the all changing vote :P

@Seth Thx

:)
I keep my eye out.

3:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek GO GO GO

@smartboyhw: it just happens ;p

jrg
huh?

I think i totally misunderstood @smartboyhw earlier ;p

jrg
i'm confused

3:32 AM
so am I ;p

@smartboyhw If I notice a user with some nice answers near a threshold, I generally help him out a little.

@JourneymanGeek @jrg !?!??!?!?!?!

@smartboyhw: actually my rep on AU is not that much

jrg
@smartboyhw it's on-topic here

its mostly edits

jrg
3:33 AM
if seth chose to put it here, it means it isn't part of the officially-official transcript.

@JourneymanGeek That's why I am challeninging it. I think now I am 70-something behind you:P

jrg
so this is ok.

I'm starting to thing SO isn't such a bad place.

@smartboyhw: I do spend less time here tho

3:34 AM
@Seth LOL

and I don't use ubuntu (kubuntu for me), so anything to do with unity is out

@JourneymanGeek we get are fair share of KDE questions.

jrg
hey, @flabricorn. will you have some time on saturday morning to pair?

you might consider subscribing to the tag

3:35 AM
I like the kde tag

@jrg About time for a new tag purge list?

Hmm I should create a kde-packaging tag one day

Why do some people make fun of my questions and not even answer them properly they just get all techno babble on me and make me look stupid, some people are jerks on here

I'm getting to the point of starting one...

not in this room but on my profile questions

3:37 AM
@user130156 Well, this is planet Earth. People will be people. Can't always fix that :/

@user130156: well, in the case of the one on installing ubuntu on a new windows 8 system...

jrg
@Seth if you want to start work, then go right ahead.

You DO know you can turn off secure boot right?
and that EFF and others are throwing together shim bootloaders so you can run linux without doing so

@jrg If I retag all the questions, that won't kill the tag because the question is still around right?

jrg
@Seth it'll kill the tag, if there are no questions tagged with , then it won't exist.

3:38 AM
Okay awesome.
rolls up sleeves

ya the windows 8 thing
thanks journyman

I'm running a self built windows 8 linux dualboot
let me comment if thats ok

sure

I mean, I don't mean to be mean, but too many people get this wrong

i get ya :)
I always welcome more input that way I learn too :)

3:41 AM
also,suggesting people pirate windows is horrible

Sorry not a fan of microsoft my bad

Dosen't make piracy any better
or telling people to download stuff off dodgy p2p sites
(MS actually has legal downloads if you know where to look. I use it with my school supplied windows keys where needed)

ya they can be dodgy

jrg
i just don't use windows.

What's up with ?
ah, Libre Office

3:43 AM
I just wanted people to see it and comment maybe a better way, my way is obviously too tedious and annoying but I just wanted someone to leave instructions in laymens terms is all

jrg
@Seth nice way to get lots of views on that link. ;)

yep, that's true.
Doing the OP a good turn.
Oh nice ... rotfl

rotfl:P
Uh hum @JourneymanGeek don't talk about pirating Windows

Think I can get 125 rep on SO with just edits?

jrg
ok, people keep asking me why test suites are awesome. i will just point them to how many applications i was able to patch today.
@Seth yes.
well, you get 100 by reputation bonus
and then you just earn another 25, right?

3:52 AM
yep.
I need to brush up on Reg Expressions... wonder if they have a tag for that...

Just voted for Journyman

@smartboyhw: I'm saying precisely that

:O
this calls for MSO post.

@user130156: might be clearer to make it a "question" and include the specific issues you have with defenestrating a windows box
right now it feels ranty

removing post

3:54 AM
none of them have tag wikis :O

jrg
regex!
well, none of them need tag wikis

A tag without a wiki :OOOO

jrg
none of them should exist.

okay post gone journyman

We don't want a tag?
I am shocked!

3:56 AM
You were right I should of not posted that on there a little illegal now that I think about it.

yup
I do believe that linux supports GUID partitions

thanks for the advice

not too sure about the bootloader, there is one, but not sure if the standard installer supports it

does anyone know how to change my profile pic and name it's kind of ugly I'm new to this room I changed it on askubuntu but not on stack exchange

@jrg looking a little closer, they are all synonyms of

jrg
4:01 AM
@Seth interesting.

Return to your lives citizens, the SO world is not going to end. (yet)

@Seth lol

well, at least I can make someone laugh :/

@Seth more lol

I need to spend more time with Roland.

4:05 AM

I like Roland.

Roland was the first person who befriended me when I came to the site.

@Seth OOOOH so romantic:P

@RolandiXor you have really nice boyfriends :P

@smartboyhw It is really. </sarcasm >

4:07 AM
@Seth yes it is

4:22 AM
@user130156: I believe you can either use gravitar or upload one under 'edit profile'

Wow, back here after almost a year! Hello folks!

@GeorgeEdison Approve post please

On a lighter note, after reading Are upvotes not giving points right now? and @Eliah's answer, I'm wondering if the Unsung Hero badge could be redefined to allow more than just one in a lifetime ;)

7:00 AM
@smartboyhw Sorry, away for a few minutes there.
I'll take a look.

@GeorgeEdison OK

@smartboyhw Approved and published!

Q: Is there a bug at the election page?

smartboyhwI went into the election page to vote for the 2013 Community Moderators election (Primary). But when I clicked into @green7's vote, it went strange: turned into 8-15 = -7. How could this be -1? It seems that for almost every candidate I voted DOWN on it would show a -1 instead of it's tota...

8:33 AM
All people in this chatroom are so awesome!

Hi all

8:52 AM

For the 100 uvotes

Oh, 100? Nice!

9:33 AM
anyone here know what criteria 2buntu uses to vet guys who ask to join?

criteria? Not sure if we have one.

@mojo706 We don't have any :P

we'll go from contributor posts to author to editor to admin.

Oh ok. But all news should be relevant to Ubuntu, Yes?

Yep, mainly.

9:37 AM
Thanks for the replies most appreciated :)

@mojo706 I've activated your account :)

no problem.

Thank you @AmithKK

@RolandTaylor @jrg @Gui NOTIFICATION: I've activated @mojo706's 2buntu account

@GeorgeEdison ^^

9:54 AM
Quick question: When logged into Ubuntu with a guest account you cannot save anything nor create anything(for example a folder or a file?)

You can save things but it gets stored in /tmp.
They get flushed when you log out.

etherape
lol

Damn I knew it had something to do with guest account. thanks @jokerdino

I think you can recover those files but I am not sure. I need to check.

ok please check

10:02 AM
@mojo706 I think that one is still relevant ^^

@jokerdino thanks, I'm on it

10:13 AM
sorry for foolish question using first time ubuntu ... how can i copy file in file system in ubuntu ?

Just copy as you normally do?

@jokerdino there is even not option to past ..

What file are you copying and from where to where?

@jokerdino sorry i want to past file in file system and want to install

i dont know what you mean by file system

10:16 AM
BBL

and what are you installing?

can't see images here

Gedit so that i have download it , it is a Gedit-3.4.6.tar.xz file

you need 3.4 version of gedit. so you downloaded a tar ball. :/
what you need is a PPA or at least a deb file and just install that one

10:20 AM
@jokerdino where can i get those file .. ?

what version of ubuntu are you using?

11.10

might be a little tricky.
have you asked a question with your specific use case?

noop just installed Ubuntu right now ... :(

heh, don't :( yet. we have hope
so, i need to know why you want 3.4 version of gedit.
and also, why didn't you not go with 12.04 instead of 11.10?

10:23 AM
yeah 3.4 is default in 12.04

other version will be ok .. to i just want a editor ..

@NullPointer i am sure 11.10 already comes with gedit, version 3.2

@fossfreedom so you mean it has already gedit ... damn on me ..
i just want syntax highlighting

@NullPointer :) ^

10:26 AM
@NullPointer 11.10 has gedit and gedit has syntax highlighting.
if you can find that big button in the top left, click on it and search for gedit

omg what i all need to save file in correct extension ...

not sure i understand you

@jokerdino there is just text editor not gedit

yeah, that one is indeed gedit

thankyou ... guys you are awesome ..

10:30 AM
also, on your way out, research a little about "X and Y problem". Will come handy in the future. :)

@mojo706 what do you want to do?
pick a bug, and then fix it

qbi
Hey, can you have a look at those two questions. IMHO the OP is asking the same thing two times. What to do here?
1
Q: network profiles in ubuntu 12.04

Vivek PradhanI use a wired connection at home and in college. But at home i set my ipV4 settings to automatic DHCP whereas in college I need to manually enter the ip address, subnet and gateway and i also need to change proxy settings. So whenever I go home, i need to change system settings to no proxy and ...

1
Q: Setting proxy variables automatically for different Network Profiles

Vivek PradhanI have two network profiles for wired connections in the network manager: 1. Home_Lan--> automatic dhcp requires No Proxy 2. Hostel_Lan--> manual ip settings requires an automatic proxy url Now, I can see these profiles in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections folder. I checked this...

@qbi he is asking the same question just different words
although in the first question he asks if the automation can be added to wireless networks

12:39 PM
There is a huge learning curve when it comes to contributing to Open Source software. I am a volunteer in waiting because I do not know what to do.

@mojo706 be patient. Coming here already was a giant leap to start contributing ;)
Issues will rise and fall - all of a sudden you will find one where it is up to you to contribute in solving it.

@Takkat :). I have found an isssue I can contribute to on LibreOffice problem is I don't know how to do it

Not all issues need coders, sometimes just sharing your idea will help others to help others to make Ubuntu better.

ohh. So thats why the ask for comments. Hahaha I feel dumb. Thanks

The problem most people have with open source is that it is the community and not the individual who makes the moves.
2
But only having a strong community will actually make it work.

12:50 PM
True

Another option is building something tiny that solves a problem.

Or just posting a work-around until something is properly fixed.

Or... the list just keeps going. I've done those two.

A billion tiny bits make more than any genius could ever accomplish.
2
There are always people who can't believe why Linux is free of charge but the answer is so simple: it does not belong to anybody, so there is nobody who could sell it.
