jrg
12:34 AM
What, you don't understand?

I was expecting it to be much more difficult than that.

I must admit, I don't understand. How do you slice a lemon (or half a lemon) when all you have is the lemon itself, a paperclip, and Ubuntu?

@jrg I see where you are getting at with that ssh hacking lemon scheme. But what do we do with the pink elephants and the velociraptor riding a pig?
@EliahKagan , the sliced lemons is easy to get once you know that with Ubuntu and a paper clip you can....(click to continue reading)

hey guys, I have a "quick" question (notice the treacherous quotes)
I can't ask it on the site because I'm mostly relying a friend's problem and I doubt he's using Ubuntu anyway
...at any rate, he's complaining because when he uses the android emulator the top output looks weird

define wierd

The RESident memory number for the emulator process looks way off.
Summing up the numbers on that column (I have a fuller output; I snipped it for you) doesn't get you anywhere close to 1467468 kB of used memory

@jrg you forgot that the acid from the lemon and a couple of nails is what gives you the initial charge to start the flux capacitor...before you harness a lightening strike that is

...well there difference is only ~300m

@mateo_salta: I updated our ad on Meta.AU.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing As your sidekick I concur that this actually gives the lightning strike previously mention, killing only cows, not humans
Well guys
take care, have a good day, night, eclipse

jrg
@EliahKagan you could do it with say, a credit card from your wallet.

1:00 AM
Beware of half cut lemons, they tend to lightning strike you

jrg
i'm assuming that whomever is going for world domination does have some materials available to them that an average citizen in the US might have on their person.

@jrg yes, 2 whole pieces of half lemons
2 of them... 100% half lemons
omg 2!!!

there's that "plutonium" for sale thing. evidently since it's not a planet any more demand for the element of the same has dropped far enough that the general population can get it

jrg
oh, another question about the rules regarding what tools I have: can I make use of local, unsecured wifi connects and all the tools i have available to me there?
like, can i use google voice and sip gateways for phone calls?
because then i could social engineer my way in.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Cue the conspiracy theories...

1:20 AM
Wait a minute, just because the clipper chip existed doesn't mean NSA backdoors crypto on purpose...

jrg
C-tech astronomy.

someone finally watched sneakers

jrg
i've watched sneakers many, many times.
it's one of my favorite movies.
if i can only take the movies i can fit on a 32GB USB stick, sneakers is definitely on them.

jrg
1:39 AM
anyone ever done a PXE boot of another distro?

Spam. (And in the tag no less.)

about time.

jrg
well done everyone

@EliahKagan did you see our new tag?

New tag?

1:44 AM
4 hours ago, by Seth
<-- We need that tag

@Seth Ha! :)

;)

Hopefully not too much spam is posted with that tag... :)

lol
It's not really real you know.

@jrg Returned the thinkpad with no problems, they even did an in-store test this time to ensure it was in working condition when they swapped models.

jrg
1:57 AM
@Flabricorn noice.
so, whats the CPU on that?
i forgot to ask.
2.2GHZ or something, right?

2:18 AM
@JacobBlack --^

user19161
@Seth Yes I remember. =)

This time we're all blue :D

user19161
@Seth Will you ever run for mod though?

user19161
@AmithKK I see your face for the first time!

2:20 AM
@JacobBlack I don't know... thats TBD ;)
@AmithKK fun!

user19161
@AmithKK What happens at the end?

@AmithKK did ls work? I heard it didn't.
Ah, I see now.
Ha! echo was left. lol

@Seth echo is provided as a shell builtin (in addition to existing as /bin/echo). So long as the shell is in memory and running, echo is usable.

ah nice.
Well at least I can talk to myself when nothing it left.
Anyone know of a markdown editor? Or a gedit plugin?
(asks before checking repos lol)

2:49 AM
@Seth, there's ReText in the repos. Pulls in qt stuff. I use it.

Yeah I just found it :)
Works great so far.
If only Google docs supported markdown :(

@AmithKK after seeing your video (Well actually after you pressed enter on that beautiful recommended command line I just fast forwarded the whole thing to the end) I can honestly say this might be the only operating system that STILL works after been deleted in the moment

@Seth, if you could figure out how to make Retext open files with a suggested extension such as .markdown, you'll be my hero (of the moment). In other words, I want to associate files (that are genuinely markdown and with a .markdown extension) with Retext. I've spent quite sometime trying but I've found that if I do manage, Retext works a bit oddly.

@AmithKK you can even create a video called "How to record a video in Ubuntu.. without ubuntu"

Step 1. Start recording...

Step 2. Delete the whole thing

Step 3. Upload to youtube before the world ends

@vasa1 Well, I'll see what happens on my end :)

2:57 AM
@Seth, thanks!

If you change the extension of a txt file to something like markdown and try opening it in Retext it should work. Is that what you tried?

No, that's not what I want if you mean using the context menu and Open with ... I want to open the file in Retext by double-clicking on the file's icon.

ah, that shouldn't be too hard.

Anybody knows what group will be developing the h.265 codec for linux?, will it be avconv/ffmpeg or somebody else?

probably someone else.
but idk

3:03 AM
you mean h264? that's a separate project

no
h265
the actual h265 or hevc codec

okay i googled. i would imagine it will be a separate lib. a LOT of what ffmpeg/avconv does is tie together loads of codec libraries, not actually implement all of them

Am very eager about it ^^

from the wikipedia page, it sounds like they want to charge a load of money for it. even if/when someone buys a copy of the spec it will be "restricted"

bah
Apple uses h.264

3:08 AM
they pay for it

Whats wrong with VP8 or OGG or THEORA?

not a thing. they're comparable to h264. but if h265 is significantly better...

in what way?

i just read the wikipedia page. they claim it gets higher resolutions and better bitrates for similar visual feedback
also theora is the video end of ogv is theora. so saying ogg or theora is redundant

go figure. I knew i'd mess them up.
but you get the point.

3:12 AM
vorbis is audio. theora is video. you didn't "mess it up"

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I meant confuse my videos with my audios.

okay...

just saying...now you know
lots of stuff i don't know. i don't mind when people tell me an answer i can recall later

Sure :)

3:33 AM
Since my GIMP skills are awful, I just copied the ad from Area 51

@Seth lol

shrug
Can I have an upvote please :)

4:11 AM
What should be done about this edit?

do they both work? if so reject it

@AbrahamVanHelpsing well, that's what I don't know.

they both should work
i haven't tested it though. /g is for if it occurs more than twice is my understanding

okay, I'll reject it then. The guy seems to think the original command ruined his file, but that should be a new answer.

the string shouldn't appear twice... i suppose it could

4:22 AM
As in "The world should go round and round, though I suppose it mightn't"?

deb and deb-src lines would make it appear twice
s///g might be more correct. i wouldn't touch it and leave it alone

ah, well that would be "The world goes round and round, except when it doesn't"
I suppost anyway.
Well, needs one more reviewer.

1 hour later…
5:49 AM
anyone familiar with iptables here?

@Bruce Mildly.
I usually know enough to cause trouble and just not enough to fix it.

6:16 AM
I keep getting this bronze badges I need one gold and some rep :(

7:14 AM
@jrg it may not be "fixed" forever. It does come back occasionally on my multiuser setup, but I am unable to see a pattern.

7:55 AM

Hi @AmithKK

@Takkat Hey :P
@LuisAlvarado The gui is actually somewhat functional too

@mojo706 No one is going to give that to you. Take some time, edit, comment, and spend some time here and you will get your rep.
@vasa1 Setting up Retext to open default files was easy for me. All of my *.mkdn files open with Retext as default.

I thought wubi was the entry drug of choice into ubuntu?

hello
is ubuntu use anaconda installer ?
somebody is there ?

who is somebody?
ubuntu dosen't use anaconda as far as I know
and no
standard install from livecd uses ubiquity, cli install uses whatever debian uses I believe

hmm
which module or function it's use for dialog box for user input
in python

8:22 AM
in command line and shell it's dialog but i need in python.
@JourneymanGeek thank for the Links..

X Y problem
what're you trying to do?

i link that installation text mode window.. i trying to create interactive script like that..
that's why i am searching ..
* like

oh
headesks
its curses based
but that's not much help

hmm

I believe something called dialog might interest you

8:26 AM
so do you have alternate solution ?
other than dialog ?

why not that?

in python
thanks , it's curses in python..

I'm not a coder. I just hit rocks together to make fire ;p

@RahulPatil for Gtk it's gtk.Dialog or similar in Gtk3... and there is Qt, and more.

@Takkat: I'm assuming he wants to code a curses 'gui' in python

8:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek ah I see I did not read all of the conversation above, sry

8:53 AM
If I meet a KDE developer in a dark alley...

9:22 AM
shows off desktop

@maggotbrain: also worth looking at Bryan Larsen's Answer here askubuntu.com/questions/177909/…
I wonder if you could blacklist those packages
that would break GTK integration in KDE, if it works, but that's the whole point

@JourneymanGeek Appreciate the tip. What if I want to keep KDE alongside of my other WMs? I still need to test this for multiple users on the same system. Right now I am just testing with a single user profile. What if I have a user who likes to switch between multiple WMs?

@maggotbrain: thats tricky
I'd hope the KDE integration was per user
I don't use anything but KDE so... I'm not too sure
there's a reason this is comments and chat and not answers ;p

9:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek Agreed. I can deal with it as far as my systems testing goes. But, I've got some savvy, but newish users who don't accept jumping through hoops. They are hooked on Ubuntu but play around a bit too much to keep things stable. ;-)
They'll be a bounty on this one, cuz it ticks me off and makes me look bad giving half-assed answers. Folks love being able to switch between gnome, Unity, xfce. Some really like KDE, but KDE botches the smooth integration.

10:06 AM
XD

@AmithKK And everyone's workflow is perfect. For them. That gives many IT folks job security. I loathe the day that I find a boss who has a <Meta>-<Ctrl>-<Alt> key to turn on his computer fan. ;-)

lol
@maggotbrain: I have my top fan set to run so I can see the inside of my case ;p

@JourneymanGeek wat? How does that work?

10:21 AM
@maggotbrain: well, fan speed management software (in windows), fan has a LED that is powered by the same power supply as the rest of the fan
so its brighter when the fan is spinning fast
need to get it working in linux at some point, but fan speed management isn't a major concern for me

@JourneymanGeek Just use serial I/O

@AmithKK: oh, I have some ideas on how to do it
the actual fan settings tho... ;p

@JourneymanGeek lool

I'd have to use pwmconfig for the actual speed control
I think

Yeah

10:28 AM
not really a priority
I have a really quiet computer in a fairly noisy apartment ;p

@JourneymanGeek That's interesting. So, are bright lights bad? I should wire something up so when I reboot a string of Christmas lights go on. My GF would love that.

BBL

11:05 AM
@maggotbrain: naw, I wouldn't mind the lights
actually if you wanted to do that, ikea has these light strips
LEDs, pretty bright, run off 12V

This: askubuntu.com/questions/253793/… is a brilliant troll!

ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20119418 I have an older version of this
tested it off a molex connector once or twice

11:18 AM
@maggotbrain how so?

11:32 AM
site down?

o_o - tweet "We have lost all connectivity with our New York data center, hang on while we try and get things back online.."

gack!
@fossfreedom oh. it just looked like buzzword bingo to me and not a real question.
I am so happy to not be the engineer on this change/outage. That sucks.

11:46 AM
15 minutes and counting - looks serious.

oh, so its not just me... was about to submit new mobile phone to the "accidental" crush of a 15 tons press cylinder

You'll lose all your warranty when seal is broken.
So keep the 15 tons off the seal!
All is broken except the seal ;P

@Takkat oh, lol!
See? Seal is intact... Now give me a stupid new phone!

lol
The other day they showed what a pint of beer does to a Samsung vs. an iPhone.

as in: smash or splash?
who won?

11:52 AM
Dipped them deep into the full glass.
Apple won: they had moisture detectors inside.
But the Samsung was the only one that survived because you could immediately remove the battery.

Next obvious question will be: but was the seals on the phones intact?

Well, pink coloured moisture detectors make you lose your warranty as well (at least with an Apple product).

well, there is a reason you pay extra... :P

Secret pink spots inside your iPhone are a feature you always wanted.

I knew it was not only me! <3

Q: How does the shell environment load when logging in graphically?

mkrmrI've found that when logging in graphically the shell loading process works differently than logging in through the console. Environment variables such as $BASH_VERSION and $ZSH_VERSION are not set when logging in graphically, and a script specifically written for bash and zsh that I tried to use...

They put people into a PET brain scan to see that archaic brain regions are activated when you showed them an iPhone.

qbi
I tend to vote for NRQ here. Because several important parts are missing. What do you think?

@qbi why?
@Takkat haha! loving the bashing :)

qbi
@BrunoPereira If you follow the link in this question, you'll see that there is more information, which is not contained in the question.

12:02 PM
@qbi Is the shell loading process working as it should when logging in graphically, and if so is there any documentation on how it works (and if so, where can I find it)? How should I make this work?
Sounds like a question

@Gui You, sir, called it!
Also, heya folks.

jrg
@takkat hm, weird.

anyone watched TPBAFK yet?

@mojo706 about to close this conversation as too-localised...! had to google that.

@fossfreedom hahaha

12:12 PM
@fossfreedom: you need to work on your knowledge of AOEL

@JourneymanGeek whats the meaning of ^

... "AOEL Amis des Oiseaux d'Eure et Loir (French bird club)" - the freedictionary - bizarre!

@fossfreedom that is even more confusing

This is on topic because penguins are birds.

As are Quetzals.

@Takkat I see what you did there ^

acronyms of excessive length?

Q: How to ask a following question?

NicolasWebI've found a question corresponding to mine (What is the purpose of favoriting questions?), but need some precisions (Do favoriting questions help to get an answer?). If I had enough reputation : by adding in the question a comment? an answer written like a question? Something else ? If I don't...

5:24 PM
Why are we duping questions like "Ubuntu freezes, whats wrong?" to "What to do when Ubuntu freezes"?
that doesn't make sense as it wouldn't really solve any problems

Who does?

We do.
I see it a lot.

@Seth maybe the answers to many of this can be moved to a single question
The actual answers that solve the problem

But the question is about how to unfreeze Ubuntu
most people want to know why it is freezing.

see your point there

jrg
man, libreoffice is downright unintuitive. How can people use such a weird piece of software?

@jrg That's why I don't use it (as much as possible anyway).

jrg
@Seth right.

Another question:
How can a 1 rep user flag for re-opening?

jrg
i think they can flag their own thing.

5:28 PM
Okay.

jrg
i don't know, let me create a disposable sock really quick and check.

okay great.

Q: Can I flag this?

i'm meI'm a 1-rep user, and I'd like to flag this question. here's my problem, ask ubuntu is really cool, but my ssh server doesn't work. import antigravity antigravity.activate look, python code!

the answer is "sorta"

okay.

jrg
so right out the box, a unregistered user can't do it

5:32 PM
please get a screenshot of the flag dialog for my meta post.

jrg
oh, i just killed the user.
:P

@jrg Okay, then how do they re-open it?
I just closed one :(

jrg
they have to become "registered", and by that I mean log in using an openID, or create an SE account.

I see.
Well, I'll go get my own sock for the meta post.

jrg
just link me later and i'll clean up.

Okay will do.

unless of course you're going to be nefarious and use him for evil.

Hey Folks! Check out the election's Town Hall Chat this Wednesday and ask the candidates some questions!

6:46 PM
@LuisAlvarado You might want to undelete your meta question. (It's entirely your choice. You are under no obligation to undelete it!) I think your situation, where you get 230 rep and upvotes don't add to it, is illustrative for others, and I composed an answer I think can help others. (However, I don't feel an extreme need to post my answer--if you undelete it, I will; otherwise I won't; either way is OK.)

@EliahKagan Yeah already did lol
The 230 came all at once. About 30 minutes ago I had only 10 points
Then boom 230, maybe it was some lag on the system
lag + luck
I can leave the question if you feel your answer will help others
