6:00 PM
@JorgeCastro I did $ sudo apt-get update and then tried A) apt-get again (after removing everything) and B) tried dpkg again (after removing everything)
(I got the same err so now no idea to proceed)

oh dude I see!
it's fixed in Debian but not ubuntu

nudge anyone with thoughts on askubuntu.com/questions/159191/… ?

ok I edited your question
@hhh I don't know how to fix your problem so I made it clear that you're looking for a workaround

is it possible to run .net framework v.4 in ubuntu?

@msPeachy check out mono

hhh
6:09 PM
@JorgeCastro Thank you, currently installing virtual things so not getting stuck to this kind of things...it was my mistake to go too early to 12.04 :P

@DavidPfeffer don't know, but I upvoted you!

@JorgeCastro Thanks :-)

@DavidPfeffer sudo apt-get install mono-complete?
is this right?

@msPeachy Assuming you want to install all of mono, yes

do i need all of mono?

6:13 PM
@msPeachy I don't know what you're trying to do

i have an app created by a friend who developed it with .net, and i want to try it out

Q: How do I develop .NET apps on Ubuntu?

Owais Loneat college we use Microsoft .NET for developing applications. I recently switched to Ubuntu and would like to know similar tools for making apps on/for ubuntu.

in ubuntu 10.10 I've discovered a very useful feature. using the keyboard shortcut "Super+A" I had a overview over all my windows I had opened. I dont know if it came with ubuntu itself or with a tool like compiz but I love it. Now I've installed kubuntu 12.04 and miss that feature. I had a great time benefit from that so plz help me out

@jrg I am not going to develop with .NET. I am learning C now. I just want to try out an app developed by a friend under .NET

jrg
@msPeachy Same thing, there isn't really a good way to do it.

6:18 PM
i see
thank you
@ycelik try super+w

@msPeachy "run" dialog appears

@ycelik well, it doesn't in ubuntu.
i'm not sure in kubuntu

@msPeachy any idea where i could get further information about that feature?

have you tried changing the keyboard shortcuts yourself?
@ycelik haven't used kubuntu but i am assuming there's a way to change key shortcuts, try regional and accessibility from the main menu under system settings

@msPeachy ok I'll try that and give you a feedback.

6:24 PM
@ycelik okay

@JorgeCastro in Quantal. not Precise. it hasnt been SRU'd
(and it probably should be, no?)
also...

although discussions are not constructive here normally
^ out of context, that's lol

@msPeachy ok I've checked the shorcut list at settings->system settings->shortcuts and gestures but I didnt find it. Also theres not a single shortcut with "super" key. I'm really pissed of ..

I don't think KDE uses super shortcuts

@ycelik i see. i don't know how to help you with that, never used kubuntu. maybe jorge is right

@JorgeCastro this (I used to use KDE before 12.04)

6:32 PM
@JorgeCastro hi jorge. do you know something about a feature to over- and preview all opened windows in kubuntu?
@JorgeCastro on uubntu 10.10 it was "super+a"

Public Service Announcement from The Lord of Time:

Anyone using 10.10 is using old, outdated, flawed software and should upgrade immediately.

This has been a Public Service Announcement from The Lord of Time.

No clue, I don't use kubuntu

@ycelik i'm not sure that feature exists in Kubuntu...
if it does, i dont know where it does now

does compiz use those "super + .." shortcuts?

dunno, havent tested
TO UBUNTU!

6:36 PM
ahh yeah its compiz! great :-)

@ycelik good for you
gotta go and sleep its past 2am here.
good night guys

accidentially steps on the trigger on the BFG
... oops

@msPeachy thx for your help :*

BOOM
@ycelik so what did super+a do again?
(because super is a shortcut for the Unity dash)

@LordofTime it scales all windows and gives you a preview and overview.

6:40 PM
that no longer exists
although
i am using Unity so...
i dont have gnome-shell

@LordofTime what is unity?
ah ok

got it

hey

BLAH! sup

6:45 PM
is shotwell the best photo/video program?

jrg
I prefer openshot for my videos, but shotwell does a good job with photos.

i like shotwell just tagging all my photos took FOREVER!
never used openshot

-_- sad sad sad
(and please, no one jump on my back for telling them to act like grown adults)

jrg
> I just said we don't need Ubuntu anymore because Ubuntu's unique features are (or will be) included in Gnome also
So you're saying that Ubuntu does not have more innovations? That's like saying we didn't need the knife, because whacking things with a rock broke them up just fine.

it is kinda sad
its to bad there isn't more cooperation
I like Unity and Gnome but for me a global menu is required after using it in Unity

7:23 PM
@RolandTaylor wow...that's just...*crickets*

7:52 PM
Crickets??? where??

jrg
@aking1012 indeed.
Not sure what the context is, but yes.

Hannibal - a-team

jrg
Oh, i haven't watched the A-Team yet.
still working through Airwolf.

i couldn't believe it's season 1 through final....usually they do a teaser season and hulu+ for the rest

jrg
Think all the old stuff is up there fully.
I think there is one missing Remington Steele, but that was probably 2 years ago.

LOL. I forgot about this suggested edit. - stackoverflow.com/suggested-edits/189514
(only makes sense if you look into the raw markdown diff and read the rejection.)

@jrg funny. i don't thing the px change to .80 would be difficult in a python script that reads a file line by line

bob
hi, I have a ssh shell on a remote linux computer, from a linux computer. What would be the easiest way to get a graphical interface (sort of vnc or teamviewer) from there ?

@bob that's highly situational and depends on priv level among other things

bob
well feel free to ask for more details
as for the privacy level, I just want to use the existing connections, that will do

piriviledge
if you can add packages and you're not horribly size constrained i would just install xvfb and some lightweight window manager. then remote in to that...it's noisy, but it's easy

bob
9:47 PM
I have root priviledge in both computers

then if you're not size constrained i'ld just do it that way

bob
okay so first step is to install xvfb on the remote computer ?

that would be the case. so if you start the wm you can tell it to use a non-existent video card

bob
do I have to install it on the local (as opposed to remote) computer too ?

no
just the remote

bob
9:49 PM
the installation is complete
what now?
both are ubuntu desktop computers by the way
the local one is running unity, the other gnome

if they're both ubuntu desktop my solution was overkill
i was thinking you wanted a gui desktop on some random headless server
i don't see where a normal vnc style solution wouldn't work given the new details

bob
I didn't say it wouldn't, I just don't know how to do it
my only requirement
is not to have to restart the remote computer

izx
Install vino on one and vine on the other. Done. Btw bob take a look at this site, they often have good solutions for common questions.

i think google is the asset at this point, i was just pointing to a solution for a more complex problem
@izx that

bob
vino and vine ?

9:53 PM
just got a ride on a roflcopter

izx
You're welcome ;)

bob
I tried google, but I didn't find anything useful.
it pointed me to teamviewer, but that requires to be able to have a graphical interface first, so that's not possible
and also pointed me to vnc but that requires rebooting
so I came here to look for a more detailed approach as to what I could do

bob
if you have an idea, please share, it would be greatly appreciated

very first result for "vino ssh askubuntu"
it seems sound-ish

izx
9:59 PM
vnc requires rebooting!? Maybe the one my uncle bob wrote, certainly not vino or x11vnc or vncserver

@bob x11vnc should work fine for you: askubuntu.com/a/25192/3940

grr deadline moved on a couple of powerpoints/presentations i have to submit and someone decided that a study session scheduled for a month ago should take place tomorrow morning...i love fluidity

izx
Even headless needs no xvfb etc, just vncserver and your choice of WM.

@izx valid enough...my use case might be different

jrg
@aking1012 It's interesting. People are like "Meh, everyone has free time on their hands" and don't think about deadlines.

10:08 PM
My deadline is my bedline now - good night all

jrg
But as soon as you think about deadlines and start enforcing them, they get all whiny.

@Takkat night takkat

jrg
"As long as you're wasting someone elses time, it's perfectly fine" :S
@Takkat night!

@jrg i don't mind deadlines. i mind "fluid" deadlines

jrg
@aking1012 Ah, those are the worse.

10:10 PM
i'm bad for pulling a couple of all nighters a week before deadline. honestly i perform better under consistent, but not unbearable pressure
i find that a lot of great folks are...so i find myself in good company

bob
I've been tried for the past hour to get this vnc thing working, but I can't manage to do it, I really need help please

izx
IMO not constructive, see comment: askubuntu.com/questions/159283/…
@bob: ask a damn question already!

bob
well my question is just how to setup a remote desktop.
I have a connection* from A (my local computer) to B (the remote computer) through ssh, and I'd like to pass vnc or anything similar through that existing connection
so as to get a remote desktop from A to B
I've tried quite a lot of things, vinagre, qtnx, and such, I'm always getting errors no matter what I try
I just want something that works, regardless of what it is
(preferably nx as a matter of fact, since it is said to be faster, but at this point anything will do)
I'm just lost

izx
Well, obviously the question is not "just" as simple as you make it out to be. So ask a proper question!

bob
well I'm sorry if I can't just put it into simple words that fit into one sentence, I'm just exposing a problem and I hope you will be able to help me solve it.
but if you want further details, because my explanation seems unclear, please ask

izx
11:10 PM
Huh? you can write a mini-novel on your problem in the body of a question.

bob
that's one of the purposes of a forum as opposed to a Q&A, if the question is unclear you can ask for details

izx
I mean ask a question on askubuntu.com

bob
how about in here?

izx
NO!
/me ignores bob
hello darkness my old friend.....

11:27 PM
@bob The question would be something like "Step by step copy paste tutorial for configuring VNC/RDP without a reboot"
The description would read something like "Both running Ubuntu desktop standard installation"
insert more details

Q: How do I find out if I have an answer to a question I post?

NamretawHow do I find out if I have an answer to a question I post? I have posted 2 questions. One was tagged as too vague, the other seems to have disappeared. I am trying to get some traction on Ubuntu, but everything is obscure, even the question forum.

@EliahKagan completely agree

izx
There needs to be a clueless newbie chat room staffed solely by an IT Crowd inspired ELISA-type chatbot

I hope I wouldn't be relegated to said room ;)

izx
Have you tried asking this question on AskUbuntu?
A question consists of a title and a body.
What are those? Redirecting to English.SE....

11:36 PM
you always make me smile @izx
We've kicked around the idea of a no-rep required room, but it always comes back to "it would get horribly spammed"

izx
heh :)
I know jrg hates captches, but a no-rep room requiring one-time per-session captcha would be one solution...

Now here's a challenging decision to make... should I make use of this package and drop support for earlier versions of Ubuntu or use QtDbus and not have cross-platform RPC?
(Or something even more complicated - like sockets?)

If it's brand new I would look forward instead of trying to back-port support

Yeah, I might just have to do that.

izx
Is there a reason it can't be back ported to at least 11.10/10.04? The library I mean.

11:40 PM
if it's not already, i suspect it relies on a newer api than the qt runtime on older versions supports
was a wild guess

Well, to qualify for the contest, the application can only use packages in the archives.
...so the app will be fine if it only supports Precise and Quantal.

izx
duh, then you do that--shortest path FTW!

they need to revise the chat faq to include that the 20 rep requirement is for global rep not site-rep imo

izx
well thats not a foolproof barrier anyway as recently demonstrated

i agree. i stalled when i saw less than 20 site rep for about 2 seconds
completely explains why linux still exists:

Alright, here's a really strange question:

Q: What's up with the libqtrpc2-1 / rds package in the archives?

George EdisonI am considering using libqtrpc2-1 in my application but there seems to be some confusion over the name of the package. On the right-hand side of the package page, we see: So it looks like the package is named "rds". ...or is it? Attempting to view the copyright file results in a 404. The c...

bob
@aking1012 ok I asked it here just as you said : askubuntu.com/questions/159303/…

@bob good deal. that should elicit exactly the response you're looking for
someone may edit your title a bit since i tend to be a little snarky, but it's VERY clear what you're after when worded that way
it's tagged both 12.04 and 10.04. are you going across distributions? might be good to include that in the actual description if so, since i seem to recall some remote-desktop software having a bug in that instance

bob
yes it's going across distributions
