12:00 AM
trying to be constructive so you get a useful answer (one that works for you)

bob
yes sure, thanks
it's so frustating losing countless hours on something so simple
and even more so when in the end it's still not working...

agreed. that's why AU is here. if you find an answer you self answer to save others the trouble (i've even asked questions explicitly to self-answer). if someone else already hit the roadblock, they can help you out

bob
the thing is that this very issue must have been met by countless people
it's so common, yet I don't understand what's wrong

you're just the first one to step up and ask for a specific step-by-step tutorial on it
to be fair, AU was only recently included in the installer as a support option

bob
there are already many questions about it, and many tutorials too

12:05 AM
and they don't work for you i suppose

bob
well no they dont
or I'm using them wrong for an unknown reason
quite a lot of views so far
I think I shouldn't hold my breath afterall

i gave it an upgoat since it's a valid and expressive question. you can't expect an answer in 30 seconds though

izx
Patience young Jedi.

bob
I've been patienting 3 hours already around this problem
it's 2 am here

user image

someone said jedi?

izx
12:08 AM
Now that you've asked one, I'm comfortable following up in here. Did you open the ports on the remote server -- ufw or the router, etc?

bob
I have only one port that I can access, and that is ssh

izx
Try Canonical paid support if you want an answer NOW...

bob
which I'm able to access, I get a shell.

router is where i'm suspecting. so it evolves in to an ssh-vpn question

izx
Why? Isn't it YOUR desktop?

bob
12:10 AM
well yes it is, but I don't have the router tool right now to open more ports
in any case ssh should suffice, vnc is supposed to go through ssh

izx
Good. Look up static port forwarding for SSH and forward local port 5901 to remote 5901. Your client will then connect to localhost:5901 and be forwarded over ssh

i'ld be looking at something like this: linuxjournal.com/content/ssh-tunneling-poor-techies-vpn to remap a foreign port to a local port so you can connect to localhost:vnc instead of whatever else
@izx that

bob
@izx that's what I did. ssh -L 5900:localhost:5900 B (<- executed from A)

izx
Check what port Vnc is running on B with netstat -l

bob
5900

izx
12:17 AM
And your client says what upon conn to local 5900?
B is the remote server, right?

bob
when I used vinagre, it connected but the screen remained black
yes, B is the remote, A the local.

izx
If the remote is on Unity 3D it usually doenst work, you get background only or black. Switch to 2D

bob
it's the opposite

izx
Do you need access to the running session or just A vnc session?

bob
12:21 AM
the local is on 12.04 with unity 3d and compiz and everything, the remote is just 10.04 pretty much native gnome

izx
Ok, what did you install on B that's running on 5900?

bob
@izx are you about to offer me to use qtnx?

izx
No

bob
@izx cause I already tried it, with no success either
with qtnx I can't even connect

izx
Since you have no GUI access to the server, obviously you didn't install vino. Which vncserver did you install?

bob
12:23 AM
I don't understand what I'm supposed to put in the fields of the qtnx gui application, it asks for password and username and things like that, but ssh is just a key for me
I installed just vncserver
and I run it with

izx
Take your qtnclx elsewhere.

@izx you're a little grumpy today

izx
Yes...

bob
x11vnc -localhost -nopw -noxdamage -display :0

i starred the question. i've got to go do some video editing stuffs that will tax my ram/processor. with the star i'll be able to come back to it fresh

12:29 AM
I had to do that yesterday while I waited for inkscape to compile

o/ @JorgeCastro

izx
12:54 AM
Sorry @bob, on and off the road. Try running Vinagre from a terminal - even if you get a black screen it'll show useful debug info.

bob
as a matter of fact no, not a single line
and there's no verbose option

izx
Run xvncviewer then...
Are you logged into the gnome session on the remote?

bob
xvncviewer

Server: 127.0.0.1

Wed Jul 4 02:58:10 2012
CConn: connected to host 127.0.0.1 port 5900
main: End of stream
@izx yes the computer is started on the remote end, and using gnome, if that's what you're asking
on the remote end I get channel 3: open failed: connect failed: Connection refused

izx
Not started...*logged in*??

bob
yes, logged in too.

izx
1:02 AM
As root?

good morning

bob
as sudoer, yes

izx
look, if you don't need the open session, but just a session, kill x11vnc and run "vncserver" instead -- it's a wrapper script that will do everything for you.

@msPeachy morning

morning

1:15 AM
you wouldn't have gotten journeyman to say morning if your name was mrpeachy with a plumber pic ;) jk

lol
I neither confirm nor deny that ;p
(I DID just get on the computer... besides, my pic is cute too! )
Even if everyone seems to think i'm a small dog.

@JourneymanGeek it's okay, nobody thinks i'm a time traveler

we're all time travellers
we're all travelling forwards in time

you know what i meant

1:46 AM
@aking1012 Who is the guy in your profile pic ?

Q: How do I find out if I have an answer to a question I post?

NamretawHow do I find out if I have an answer to a question I post? I have posted 2 questions. One was tagged as too vague, the other seems to have disappeared. I am trying to get some traction on Ubuntu, but everything is obscure, even the question forum.

2:32 AM
@aking1012 :) are you saying he isn't that courteous most of the time??? just kidding...lol
good morning again to everyone here....

user19161
2:42 AM
@msPeachy Good morning. You brighten up this room with your smile.

@JasperLoy ah hmm cough

@JasperLoy I can't help to smile when I'm here....lol

user19161
@jokerdino Have some cough syrup.

hey there joker...still haven't got a joke for me?

@JasperLoy hey thanks!
@msPeachy No, I only have some disturbing and depressing news.
I just did my math exam and it was utterly terrible.

user19161
2:47 AM
@msPeachy I can't help noticing your excessive use of lol, lol.

@jokerdino ohh well there's always a next time
@JasperLoy :P yeah

user19161
@jokerdino What exam was it? IB?

@msPeachy oh yeah.. :/
@JasperLoy Mid Year exam. I would be dead if it was IB.

what is IB?

the diploma course that I undertake.
IBDP. Google it and get depressed.

user19161
2:49 AM
@jokerdino What's hard about it? Everything?

@JasperLoy Yep. pretty much.

what is IB?

user19161
@jokerdino Well, then don't do math after your IB.

@JasperLoy good suggestion. I am already wondering why on earth I do math in IB already.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year educational programme for students aged 16–19 that provides an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education, and is recognised by universities worldwide. It was developed in the early to mid-1960s in Geneva by a group of international educators. Following a six-year pilot programme ending in 1975, a bilingual diploma was established. Administered by the International Baccalaureate (IB), the IBDP is currently taught in English, French or Spanish. In order to participate in the IBDP, students ...

@jokerdino thanks, I don't think it's implemented here, haven't heard of it before

2:53 AM
@msPeachy it might have. i never heard of it until about 4 years ago anyway.

user19161
@jokerdino The world is full of wonders.

and then I am doing it now :/
@JasperLoy :P

greetings

sup

user19161
@jokerdino The sky.

2:55 AM
It's raining here, isn't it?

I've checked the WIKI page on IB, I didn't find Philippines from the countries mentioned

i wasn't saying he's discourteous, just that some things might have helped him along...

user19161
@msPeachy What do you take there then?

@JasperLoy O/A level?
@aking1012 I see what you have been doing..

2:57 AM
either napping or.....okay i was waiting for lik 200 something GB to copy to an external drive and wandered away for a bit

there comes the truth..

@JasperLoy college, then master and doctorate

whoa?

doctorate is too much money...already did a B and an M

user19161
@msPeachy Oh I was asking about the IB equivalent there. Oh is that what you have done?

3:00 AM
@jokerdino thanks for the link, those colleges and universities are in manila, that's why I haven't heard of it. I live in a small province in the south part of the Philippines

user19161
@aking1012 Oh, that sounds like Burger King and MacDonalds.

@JasperLoy I'm still taking up masters haven't finished yet. It is quite expensive
@JasperLoy ha ha ha you must be hungry to thought of Burger King and MacDonalds

@JasperLoy did not feel like typing bachelor’s and master's out, but now i did

user19161
@msPeachy Nah, I just like to talk rubbish.

@msPeachy Right. That makes sense.

user19161
3:02 AM
@aking1012 I know, I was just messing with you.

i know

@jokerdino yeah

user19161
D must stand for Dunkin Donuts then.

Probably.

It means you get to drink more coffee so that would make sense

user19161
3:05 AM
@aking1012 Yeah, coffee goes with the donuts.

p.s. it's a slightly more expensive coffee brand here as well. better known for coffee than doughnuts despite the name

Hmm so.

sidenote, it's odd that chromium spawns processes names Workerpool instead of chromium-worker or something

maby they took a break to cool off in the pool, working too hard on chromium

3:18 AM
easy as pie?

wait what?

oh, it was cake he mentioned
one of the answers

how did this went to pie and cakes?
oh okay

from the question

"it's a piece of cake"

3:20 AM
i don't see any viable answers, but i also don't see a singular and expressive question

VTC?

I would compare dual-booting it to pac man, with ghosts chasing after you. They can get you sometimes.

@jokerdino i think the op needs time to revise

I don't know. Someone flagged it and I just agreed with the flag.
BTW, the op can always revise even after closing..

I think I flagged that as non question before, what is it even asking? Is is a dupe of asking how to dual boot?

3:22 AM
ok. that's fair. there really isn't a clear problem statement, and if there were it would probably be a dupe

screen split oddly...:P
2

as if splitting the screen wasn't odd enough

or a graphics driver bug...

Let me document my flag history before I started (ab)using the mod tools flags.

@jokerdino well you have all the rights to (ab)use the mod tool flags :P

3:26 AM
@msPeachy No, there is an argument that people with access to those flags can pile on the flag weight rather quickly. So, I am letting others know that I already accumulated my flags. the tools are just for fun.

lol
@jokerdino: pfft. I call it cheating, but use it anyway ;p

@JourneymanGeek lol :P now that's what I call the ethics.

i've found late answers to be more useful for that tho

yeah, do what you must. but never flag me or else...lol

@jokerdino: I only have ethics when it comes to rep

3:28 AM
just kidding

(or contests...)

@JourneymanGeek ethics to rep?? what's that.

lol
Basically not do what the indonesian kids on SU did? ;p

@msPeachy even if i flag, the mods have to review it :/
@JourneymanGeek OOOOH, those.. :p

@JourneymanGeek what SU?
@jokerdino well, aren't you a mod already?

3:30 AM
@msPeachy Super User, Another AU like site on SE network.
@msPeachy I am just a quasi-mod.
ooh, I totally have 600 rep on SU.

@jokerdino oh i see...when are you gonna be a non-quasi mod then? :P

If there's an election and he wins ;p
he's totally get my vote if i have enough rep ;p

yep what he said ^
@JourneymanGeek you have enough rep ^^
you need 150 rep to vote ;D

@jokerdino how many reps do i need to vote for you?

150 rep is the requirement.

3:33 AM
omg still a long way to go

but if there is any sort of election, it won't come around until Feb next year.

150 rep is not much ;p

@jokerdino I better have 150 rep by then

150 rep is not that hard to get though.

it's only 15 answers with one upvote heach

3:35 AM
(granted, i get 100 rep on any site i sign up on as association bonus)

that too

(that's a nice one off deal btw)

hmmn I don't know the answers to most questions, I am still a newbie.

@jokerdino: per site
@msPeachy: precisely how you learn ;p

@JourneymanGeek yeah. it's not like you keep getting 100 in main site every time you join a new site.

3:36 AM
so two up-votes, an accepted answer, three edits and a down vote on an answer

naw
i mean on the new sites
but that makes getting 150 rep easy

yeah i know :)
@mateo_salta wait what?

I think I mis-counted

@JourneymanGeek i get 100 rep for joining a site? which sites???

@msPeachy I gained 100 rep in Stack Overflow in a matter of days so that I can vote in their election couple of weeks ago.
I just had to farm the edits.. :/
@msPeachy You get 100 rep if you get 200 in any single site and sign up for newer ones in the network.

3:38 AM
@jokerdino what SO?

@msPeachy: if you have 200 rep, you get a 100 rep bonus on other sites by associating the login between them
Stack overflow, the coding stackexchange site

it shows how much we are immersed into SE. :@
btw SE = stack exchange.

lol
I started off in superuser cause i saw it on slashdot

@jokerdino three up-votes

@JourneymanGeek Thanks, I'll try SE

3:40 AM
i started on SU b/c a problem i had was there with no answer

@JourneymanGeek Interesting.
@mateo_salta which q is this?
@msPeachy nah. just get to 150 rep and vote for me next election ;)
@aking1012 Sounds familiar.

@jokerdino i think he meant the math from his counting statement

I was coming up with a way for getting 150 rep, if you have 100 rep as bouns

oooh
you start off with 101.

as opposed to 1

3:42 AM
aw, so downvote another answer.

25 edits would be the way to go if you have nothing to do with the site.
@mateo_salta lol evul

or edit one less question, either way
without downvoting

lol
AU is probably a very good place for edit rep

cough

wink wink, nudge

3:44 AM
(what? Its true!)

well yeah.
in SU, I mainly get edit rep by editing your answers :P
replace i with I and others.

not for trying to game the system or anything, there is a lot of code to be formatted.

time to edit the posts then..

@jokerdino: Why else do you think i do this? ;p

yeah, i always knew that :P

3:46 AM
(actually no, i have a reason for not using capital Is when i refer to myself ;p)

hmm is there anything philosophical in there?
like showing that you are not a big dude or something??

lol pretty much
(protip, if you read a title and have NO idea what the question is about, please fix it!)

that's like half of the questions in AU.

@ycelik head over the mouse to the top-left corner

@AnwarShah yeah I liked that feature myself.

3:49 AM
this is one of my fav's
-5
Q: I need help with this

Ubuntu-userI need help with this. I can't figure it out. If anyone can figure this thing out let me know. I just don't understand what the solution is.This thing seems really tough to figure out. Thanks to whoever can help

I was reading the script and saw that a guy wanted that feature, so given the late answer

@mateo_salta the heck??
@AnwarShah hmm that is nice of you.

@jokerdino, thanks, I only reading the transcript today. never do that before.

hmm right.

Know your command line switches:
Add a couple of switches...

3:53 AM
@ycelik You can also use a corner to that feature. You need compizconfig-settings-manager to do that or ubuntu-tweak. That is my very favorite feature. Overcool !

See - it makes all of the difference :)

gulp

heh. i always install all the recommends...it's one of the things that upset me about k3b and kdenlive (the recommends didn't encompass all the features. i still had to add things)

@aking1012, consider all of the suggested packages also. Good morning
afk.

@jokerdino precisely

3:55 AM
poke- runs - afk ;)

@JourneymanGeek :P
@aking1012 heh

and you improve the usability of the site
everyone wins!

no, you lose sanity and you go crazy. everyone loses.
