agreed. that's why AU is here. if you find an answer you self answer to save others the trouble (i've even asked questions explicitly to self-answer). if someone else already hit the roadblock, they can help you out

Now that you've asked one, I'm comfortable following up in here. Did you open the ports on the remote server -- ufw or the router, etc?

I have only one port that I can access, and that is ssh

well yes it is, but I don't have the router tool right now to open more ports

in any case ssh should suffice, vnc is supposed to go through ssh

Good. Look up static port forwarding for SSH and forward local port 5901 to remote 5901. Your client will then connect to localhost:5901 and be forwarded over ssh

i'ld be looking at something like this: linuxjournal.com/content/ssh-tunneling-poor-techies-vpn to remap a foreign port to a local port so you can connect to localhost:vnc instead of whatever else

If the remote is on Unity 3D it usually doenst work, you get background only or black. Switch to 2D

the local is on 12.04 with unity 3d and compiz and everything, the remote is just 10.04 pretty much native gnome

Since you have no GUI access to the server, obviously you didn't install vino. Which vncserver did you install?

I don't understand what I'm supposed to put in the fields of the qtnx gui application, it asks for password and username and things like that, but ssh is just a key for me

I installed just vncserver

and I run it with

Sorry @bob, on and off the road. Try running Vinagre from a terminal - even if you get a black screen it'll show useful debug info.

@izx yes the computer is started on the remote end, and using gnome, if that's what you're asking

on the remote end I get channel 3: open failed: connect failed: Connection refused

look, if you don't need the open session, but just a session, kill x11vnc and run "vncserver" instead -- it's a wrapper script that will do everything for you.

How do I find out if I have an answer to a question I post? I have posted 2 questions. One was tagged as too vague, the other seems to have disappeared. I am trying to get some traction on Ubuntu, but everything is obscure, even the question forum.
