@jrg "A possibility could be that you wget the tarball from another place, adobe-flash style"
that doesnt download a tarball
it downloads a binary installer file

jrg
@LordofTime Um, yes it does. Or at least, it used to.

adobe doesnt provide the source

@jokerdino what is messed up?

they never have

jrg
re-read that.

jrg
A possibility could be that you wget the tarball (example: my-binary.tar.gz) and then unpack it.
make sense?

@jrg just being more specific. the flash installer package downloads a .bin, not a tarball
yep, just clarifying the package you mentioned ;P
but we really do need more context first

jrg
@LordofTime oh, you're just nit picking. ok

before anyone can answer

izx
That's being a wee bit too pedantic...

2:02 PM
@jrg @izx: deal with it

jrg
lol

izx
But yes, wgeting anything is feasible if no binaries allowed

@jrg @izx: its either my nature of nit-picking you deal with, or you get the two-hour rage session about why windows 8 will be the ultimate downfall of Microsoft, thus giving way to the Linux revolution.

izx
rofl
i've had it with all the secure boot fud already (in general)

jrg
Ok, i'll take the nitpicking, since we already know the reasoning behind the other one.

2:03 PM
:P
@izx indeed, except on low-resource systems imo
because if you have to wget, and you're on dialup... :P

@jokerdino we haven't resorted to name calling yet.

izx
@LordofTime you put that disclaimer upfront near the link to your wrapper deb ;)

:P
@izx automated installs wont prompt about it
esp. if its an "echo" or a "print" in the preinst
AND if you're using a gui update manager/package manager

izx
agreed -- need MOAR context! :D

doesn't the mysql deb force a prompt for initial root database password?

izx
2:11 PM
it needs a sufficiently robust preinst

@aking1012 in its config script, post-install

ah. ok that makes sense

but you can do that in config, for a download-for-install deb, you have to have it download first
so preinst happens before install/download
and if you're on a GUI, you dont see preinst 'echo' or print statements
same with postinst statements

jrg
yeah, it's a catch 22

BBL

izx
2:13 PM
just make zenity a dep, check for GUI and create GTK popups

speaking of which
can you point me to a link for config-time popup prompt generation?
needs it for a project
and a method to determine if you're using a GUI or not (for config-time stuff)
@fossfreedom i take it the ping worked :p
</ping>
um...

@LordofTime :) odd ball may be ... more a bit lazy more like... but once I figure this out, you'll soon see a Q&A as to why !

@fossfreedom i take it you have numerous plugins that you want individually created?

Bounty offered: How do I enable compiz "scale window title filter" on 12.04? http://askubuntu.com/questions/143589/how-do-i-enable-compiz-scale-window-title-filter-on-12-04?atw=1 #compiz

because you can package several things into one source package
i.e. plugin1 plugin2 plugin3
and a metapackage that installs all of them
(the source is plugininstaller, or whatever)
(multiple-binary installation package, like nginx has)
DAMN, that reminded me i have to finish those debdiffs! </annoyed>

2:18 PM
a dozen or more - yes - I want individual packages, then a meta package that will be an optional to install all of them. Basically flexibility of individual plugins (packages) vs a grand "lets install all" package.

hi

hi @drecute

thanks mateo_salta
@mateosalta have you tried joining to AD using likewise-open on ubuntu server 11.10 recently?

@fossfreedom what i mean is you can crreate a single source package (lets call it rythmbox-plugins), and inside that you have everything for every plugin, and individudal installation guidelines and entries in debian/control for each binary (rythmbox-plugins-[pluginnamehere], for each plugin)
@fossfreedom the php5, nginx, and numerous other packages all have that kind of setup

@drecute what is AD?

2:20 PM
unless you absolutely need each plugin its own separate package (takes up a tiny bit more disk space if that's the case)

@mateosalta Active directory

ewwww

... definitely want individual packages.

active directory
</shun>

sorry can't say that i have, others might have though

2:21 PM
@fossfreedom what's the license for release? GPLv2 / v3?
@drecute if you have a question about it, post a question

I take it that @LordofTime has had some uneventful experience with it

(or if you want to ask on the IRC, webchat.freenode.net, use #ubuntu-server as the channel, ask there)

ok

v2 I think ... good point, I need to double check this stuff before packaging.

I've successfully joined the AD domain, but whenever I try to ssh or su, I get authentication failure

2:23 PM
@fossfreedom indeed. because if its a closed source or restricted-use license, you can't publish source packages, and can only distribute the built binaries (and you'll need someone to build them locally)
@drecute i did recommend asking a question as a post to askubuntu or asking on the IRC :P

Just "post a question"

@LordofTime I've been there. No luck for hours now
so i bumped in here

to be more specific, post the question on Ask Ubuntu

then patience

maybe I might be lucky

2:24 PM
@LordofTime I suppose ... no "binaries" - just python and html.

@fossfreedom not what i meant
@fossfreedom there's two things that come from packaging:
binary installers (.debs), and the source package

... yep ... just realised what you just said :)

if the license on the softwrae being packaged is not open source, you'll have to build the source package into .debs locally
and then only distribute the built .debs and not the source package
uh oh...
kinda wishing i hadnt read world news today
"North Korea says it has aimed missiles at South Korean media groups" o.O

jrg
@LordofTime and that is news... how?
When did they stop aiming at SK?

@jrg this is the first time they've givven lat-long coordinates

jrg
2:30 PM
@LordofTime rattling a sword makes noise, shooting an arrow does not.

@jrg this is why i hate world news. it makes it sound like the universe is heading to war.

jrg
@LordofTime well, it is, but that's another discussion for warandpeace.SE, not AU. ;P

:P
@jrg this is why i hate world news
yawn
problem is i dont have anything else to do until 14:30 localtime
so...

jrg
Wow, you've got time to burn and then some.

returns to reading fox news
its 10:31 here now so :P

2:32 PM
@mateo_salta yeah i was just sharing what I found on the meta.so

the gist of that one just bothers me. like someone got goaded until they got suspended

@jrg although while the news reports Hell on earth, there are some cool things. take for example glass that is flexible. foxnews.com/scitech/2012/06/04/…
ooh, and facebook's coming close to violating the COPPA laws :P

what's FB's share price now?
20 something or below?

@jokerdino 27.33
@jokerdino rebounded on thursday, but its back down
@jokerdino -15% past 5 trading days

@jokerdino , that was a messed up chat, I was reading through some of that. I thought you were trying to say that the conversation here was reaching those levels, clear now.

2:39 PM
@jokerdino down almost 30% from its IPO though now

@LordofTime i feel overly jubilant on hearing that..

hehe

@LordofTime who didn't know it was going to be a huge ipo and roll over when the "new" wore off?

@mateo_salta we are far off that level. none of the regulars or newcomers behave that way. we should be glad.

it is oddly satisfying though

2:41 PM
@jokerdino well be glad you're not working for facebook. they may violate US laws if they go through with allowing under-13-yearolds to register on the site
there's a ton of legal policies in place against it

@LordofTime i first thought you were remarking that I was below 13. Clear now.

especially for using them in adds

yeah, brand endorsement in the side-pane as recommends in exchange for 'like' is over the top

@jokerdino hehehe
brand-endorsement's handled separately
the COPPA act is a regulation prohibiting < 13 year olds from registering online. And if you comply, and allow 13 year olds to register, they get blocked until a permission slip is sent in to the company, either by fax or mail
in the US
failure to comply means you need to block < 13 year olds from registering (ban them)
and failure to do that and allowing them to register without compliance to the law is punsihable
severely

2:46 PM
oof, there goes half their avid userbase

their explanation is that you can always not "like" something, to not endorse something

right now the "13 year olds" are registering as older
which is illegal

@mateo_salta there's a place to disable endorsements now as well

thats good.

> Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

2:47 PM
can you disable updates for liking something

scratches head

that i don't know
my stance is like != endorse. i like godiva chocolates, but i would recommend hershey/stover due to price point

izx
@jokerdino "Me sing song...soup song" ;)
3

i only endorse groups/companies that are reputable and/or have good track records.

@izx right. that would be funny if you know the context :P

2:49 PM
i spout propaganda for Ubuntu and LInux. I also spout propaganda for Norton and Kaspersky antivirus products for Windows and Mac.

i'm a comodo or bitdefender guy myself

i also spout propaganda for comodo free firewall though

I like ubuntu, but that doesn't mean I'm hanging a 20 foot Ubuntu banner on my roof

and trend micro stuff

izx
NOD32 ftw!

2:50 PM
although i might think about it in the case of ubuntu....

ack, i started the debate on which antivirus is better!
initiates temporal purge

not debating at all. just told you my preference
one of the researchers for comodo was trying to organize an open source AV engine/signature-base project on linkedin

indeed

given them trying to block AV export to some countries, i think this is a good idea

hmmm, from which country to which, like us to china?

2:53 PM
if memory serves it was iran
from the majority of UN members

Iran? Stuxnet is it?
goes to reading the convo

@jokerdino stuxnet is gone
the new one is 'flame'
similar though

flame is almost as old as stuxtnet, it just didn't set off as many flags for analysis

stuxnet was taken out with The Great Purge of Evil Internet Things :P

cool. Time to take a day off now. See ya tmrw.

2:55 PM
flame hid itself in the "angry birds" flash game

oh no, everyone is infected!

i'm not
its a windows virus :P
linux ftw

/me never played angry-birds

lol

I did for a few levels. then I gave up.

jrg
2:56 PM
Crap. I need to disinfect my sisters windows box then. :\

@jrg indeed

jrg
(granted, she played Angry birds once on it (before I got the dual boot working properly), but I'm paranoid)

Disinfect it from Windows. That would do.

paranoia is good
2

Mikko talked about it in a news article recently. They're developing definitions for it as we speak

2:57 PM
especially when it comes to ITSec
Kaspersky has definitions now :P
came out yesterday
hiya new guy :P

well you know the Russians know more about malware than any other country on the planet

@aking i know right?

hi @stueng

hello
is this channel for chit chat or help ?

both

2:58 PM
cool

jrg
@aking1012 um, I'd bet more on the Israelis than the Russians, but your point stands. :)

whats that command to do with blocking wireless rfblock or something?
soft / hard blocked

we tend to stop the random babbble when someone needs help

babble, babble...

jrg
@stueng sudo rfkill unblock all

2:59 PM
@jrg we mean in terms of antivirus :P

jrg
should do the trick

rfkill thats it thanks

jrg
@LordofTime Oh. :)

@jrg there's speculation that they borked part of stuxtnet that impeded expansion-vectors

the russians are pretty good at antivirus

jrg
3:00 PM
@aking1012 I saw that, I think that was intentional.

probably right

ok I have another question, asked it many times in several forums but so far not found an answer :)

what was the one that the US government traped in some servers, and are turning off the servers in july or something

@stueng feel free to ask
there's no need to ask for permission to ask

@mateo_salta oh the dns killer thing? i don't remember, but i did find that hilarious.

jrg
3:01 PM
@mateo_salta That was DNSChanger. - blog.cloudflare.com/…

I wish to run XBMC, without a desktop environment and without lightdm... this is fine, I can install ubuntu minimal, xorg and xbmc and startx xbmc --standalone.... and it all works, sort of. Its really sluggish though, apparently this is because XBMC requires pulse audio. If I install lightdm the performance issues are all resolved (because lightdm starts pulse) so I am wondering how can I start pulse without a DE?

pulseaudio?

@stueng why not just use lightdm to log directly into the XBMC interface?

"pulse" ?

personally runs in a CLI environment, doesnt have to deal with sound
ohey there @Marco

3:04 PM
wow, the government running malware servers so people don't loose temporary access to internet, what is going on?

oops.. it doenst like me pressing tab
marco: yes that does work, I was trying to avoid having lightdm though, I wanted as much "rubbish" removed

@jrg @marco askubuntu.com/a/146349/10616 <-- flagged

jrg
@LordofTime relax, we watch that little orange number all the time. ;P

@stueng understood, it's a kind of trade off though: keep lightdm and everything is success. Wrestle with pulseaudio in destop manager-less environment

hmm, so rfkill list all showed wlan0 not blocking but I dont see any SSID's from network manager (unity)
iwlist shows ssids now tough...
magic

jrg
3:07 PM
@stueng reboot perhaps, and then check again

@jrg remember the part about nothing to do until 14:30?
:/

killall network-manager && killall nm-applet
nm-applet &
might also do it

could also just not use network manager :p

true enough

jrg
@LordofTime that's like saying "use oss instead of pulseaudio" - you're in for a world of hurt because of applications that make assumptions.

3:09 PM
@jrg wicd makes assumptions?

idk, i haven't had a LOT of trouble from wicd

its the primary in... um...

when I use /etc/network/interfaces instead of network manager it takes forever to boot waiting for network

one of those derivatives
lol, who starred this
13 mins ago, by Lord of Time
paranoia is good

guess one @jrg 2 is up in the air

3:12 PM
does unity not use network-manager by default?

it does. and it's quite the pain to change it

ok... cos I just apt-get install network-manager and its installed.. so it wasnt there before? wtf ?
god knows this machine has been through a lot

it makes me sad that helix went commercial/registration/etc

helix was some kind of media streaming thing ?

it was an incident response distribution where they tried to make money on training. when they didn't make as much as they wanted, they started forcing registration/payment for ISOs

3:18 PM
sounds like redhat :P

you can still fetch the srpms an compile them for redhat
you just can't redistribute said branded isos
i thought about scripting that for a while...download this bash script and come back in a couple days for your complete RHEL ISO set

incident response ?
what kind of incidents?

like memory forensics, password recovery, forensic image analysis, etc

ah

similar in nature to the commercial FTK fork

3:24 PM
im bored out of my mind
waiting for a NDMP copy, been waiting 5hrs so far

i'm more bored than you

impossible

i've been sitting at a desk for 7.5 hours a day with nothing to do. for two weeks thus far

lol

and i wont have anything to do until 14:30 today (its 11:24 now)
so i'm OUTRAGEOUSLY bored

3:25 PM
ive gone onto www.overclockers.co.uk about 60 times and put together various combinations of HTPC

start playing with ext4js and senchatouch2, the boredom won't last

still, i've been sitting here reading the news (boring), and i'm getting paid, so... xD

yeh Im on double time atm lol
waiting for a copy...

@aking1012 i'm trying to decide whether or not you need a visit to /dev/doom-and-despair. What do you think?

you guys heard of synology hybrid RAID ?

3:27 PM
@stueng nope, do they have some weird pseudo-device thing or something?

sorry aking was that to me ?

it was :P

@LordofTime I'm there often enough as is, but I have friends there. It wouldn't be all that bad...but I don't think I need a specifically allocated visit.

@aking1012 then perhaps a visit to /dev/eternal-fires would be better >:)

k.. say you have 4 disks.. 2 X 3TB and 2 X 4TB... and you put them in RAID 5.. you get 9TB right? with 2TB lost right ?

3:29 PM
okay, so they found a way to harvest the additional space

what this hybrid RAID does it take those "lost" 2 X 1TB areas of disk and creates a RAID 1 mirror between them and adds it to the original RAID 5 volume of space

@LordofTime anything but being seed material for dev/random

i've got a better solution: sell the 2x3Tb disks, buy 2x4TB disks, create a 4x4TB RAID 5 array :P

then say you replace one of the 3TB disks with a 4TB one.. then ti changes the RAID 1 area of space to a RAID 5 area and gives you an extra 1TB
yes but this gives you constant upgrade path
adding 1TB at a time as you swap out one disk

I agree with @LordofTime ... simplicity is key

3:31 PM
^ better explanation

there's too much capability for explodification in hybridized tech like that

Im debating atm whether to buy a synology or make a NAS myself
so Im wondering will *nix allow me to use the unallocated blocks of space on disks in a RAID array to create additional arrays ?

@LordofTime i prefer bustication or busticated to explodification, but again in agreement

@aking my systems explode, so... :P
ooh, its almost lunchtime
just realized he's hungry beyond reason
I BLAME THE COFFEE!

izx
@stueng: did you read my answer to that question of yours re synology??

3:45 PM
um no I dont think so
where am I supposed to be looking ?
I find the website very difficult to navigate :/
usually, you click your profile and "previous posts" and you can find questions you asked etc
izx I cant find a way back to my own questions

@stueng open your profile, its under "questions"
open your own profile (click your username on the bar at the top of the page)

ahhh the TINY writing at hte bottom ok

the decision to comply with such requests as the one i said is not optional (just an FYI). :P
well, LUNCHTIME

@izx ok thanks yeah I read it.. so can I then turn my RAID 1 array into a RAID 5 array (horizontal expansion) when I get a third 4TB disk ?
"wireless device not managed" in unity - whats that mean ?
