@stueng that means that Network Manager isn't responsible for that device

righto, so how do I make it so :)

Something else is controlling it, like wicd
No idea :)

Hello @RolandTaylor
Hello all

hi
ok I fixed the wifi thing
you put me in the right direction thanks marco

4:16 PM
what does the "touch" command do?
in simple english plz

@Ashu creates an empty file, more or less

creates an empty file

The touch utility shall change the modification times, access times, or both of files. The modification time shall be equivalent to the value of the st_mtime member of the stat structure for a file, as described in the System Interfaces volume of IEEE Std 1003.1-2001; the access time shall be equivalent to the value of st_atime. The time used can be specified by the -t time option-argument, the corresponding time fields of the file referenced by the -r ref_file option-argument, or the date_time operand, as specified in the following sections. If none of these are specified, touch shall use the current time (the value returned by the equivalent of the time() function defined in the System Interfaces volume of IEEE Std 1003.1-2001). For each file operand, touch shall perform actions equivalent to the following functions defined in the

yeah but what does the first line actually mean "Update the access and modification times of each FILE to the current time." (acoording to man on 10.10)

@Ashu if you have a file, and you touch it, it's atime is updated to the time the command was run
If the file doesn't exist, it's created and the atime (plus create time) is recorded at the time touch is run

4:24 PM
what do I add to .Xsession to start ubuntu-destop ?

@MarcoCeppi Thanks!!!!

oh.. "unity" worked
is that right?

@Ashu here's an example
marco@work:~/Projects/Ondina/api$ stat users.json
  File: `users.json'
  Size: 286 Blocks: 8 IO Block: 4096 regular file
Device: 805h/2053d	Inode: 37358946    Links: 1
Access: (0644/-rw-r--r--)  Uid: ( 1000/   marco)   Gid: ( 1000/   marco)
Access: 2012-06-01 10:30:34.535555412 -0400
Modify: 2012-01-13 10:58:41.808900582 -0500
Change: 2012-01-13 10:58:41.808900582 -0500
 Birth: -
marco@work:~/Projects/Ondina/api$ touch users.json
marco@work:~/Projects/Ondina/api$ stat users.json
And of course, if the file didn't exist, touch would create it (it's more common use)

@MarcoCeppi oh thanks. the doubt came after reading this askubuntu.com/questions/146384/deleting-a-file-owned-by-root

whoever wrote that man need a course in plain english

4:29 PM
@stueng lol, yeah :P

just my opinion: manpages tend to be written by highly technical people who are writing the way they think. there are ubuntu documentation projects that could use the help of translation to plain english types. http://manpages.ubuntu.com/

part of the problem, part of the solution, or just part of the landscape

anyone listen to rap music? I hardly ever.. but am in the mood for some reason, need some recommendations

behold the epicosity of the Lord of Time

white boy rap
/me beholds the epicosity of @LordofTime

@Marco do we ever migrate things to StackOverflow?
or do we just close things taht are not on topic here
(even if a better site exists)
(for example: pure bash programming questions)

@stueng jay-z ... if you need white-boy try the nerdcore genre... youtube.com/watch?v=vuw2Fbg1TcQ might be a place to start

@Ashu how did you guess that's what i was talking about

nerdcore? lol

srsly...it exists

Q: Proxy authentication box not showing (sometimes)

zerologikoI'm behind a proxy that require authentication by means of user/pass. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, I think the proxy is "Squid". Usually everything works fine, that means that the browser shows me the window to insert proxy user/pass and I can navigate. The problem: Sometimes the browser refuse to...

4:38 PM
ok I dont think I can search spotify by genre

@LordofTime 6th sense.. haha

points at google

YTCracker is pretty good...and seconding the google response

@Ashu perhaps i leaked what the question was back through time, so you intercepted that :P

@Ashu This one is probably OT, but doesn't deserve a downvote. levelled it, though. :)

4:39 PM
@Mahesh nope not me!

@Mahesh @Achu i think it should be migrated to SO
what about you?
(my comment to that effect has +3 thus far)

i used reply to link to the q man... i wasn't referring u
yup. migrate it.

pokes @MarcoCeppi

(one of the +1ers is me. :D)

the next person who gets poked is going to be @jrg. and @jorge needs to answer a question for me RE: bugcontrol

4:41 PM
why not poke @aking1012 too ? :P

moderators are the ones to be poked
and @Jorge is an admin of bugcontrol on Ubuntu/LP

jorge is no mod.
ok.

poke me for what? all i can do is closevote

@Mahesh separate issues :P
but the @Jorge is knowledgeable
i'd even go as far as saying omnipresent, but he's disappeared a few times :P

@aking1012 lol, that was a random poke. :P sorry. :|
and ya, a close vote may be good.

4:43 PM
the random poker does not acknowledge that pokes are the most evil yet most useful thing.

I do.

geez, that's three stars in a day o.O

heh ddclient is making up its own ip address

And to show that, I've given up one of my 7 stars of lifetime. :P
guess what? all 3 stars are mine. :P

@LordofTime I did that a while back...if you want to halt it, say something like "I can't help it if I'm awesome"...that will make them stop

4:44 PM
@aking1012 actually i quite like it :P

That response from me was related to someone telling me to stop dominating the star area

<bragging> ?? :P

/me does not brag. i stated a couple of facts

@Mahesh error: unclosed tag: line 1: <bragging> has no matching closing tag.

4:45 PM
but we know that you are awesome. :D
@LordofTime @aking1012 will love you from now. He's an XML fan. :P

heh. i'm a fan of structured input, which XML is and SQL is not(as far as i can tell)
i'm even avoiding putting CSV data into a database b/c it's easier to write a query language for the CSVs in question than it is to sanitize all the SQL inputs

randomly begins spouting pro-Linux propaganda

I think you're trying to accomplish the same thing @RolandTaylor does with flakbot...but I'm digressing. shuts up

lies
i can spout better propaganda :P
since flackbot is weirdish with its propaganda
wait isnt FlackBot george's pet project?

it's not propaganda, it's a type of grief-ing...and yes

Contributors welcome.

um...
there's already an ubuntu manual

can I un-answer a question ?
my own question

as long as it's not the accepted answer, you can delete it

4:51 PM
@stueng if and only if the answer you selected hasnt been older than 30 minutes past the accepted answer

or uncheck the box

otherwise it'll need editing to remove it

Q: ddclient - wont update Invalid Keyword for 'ip' =

stueng/etc/ddclient.conf use=web, web=checkip.dyndns.org/, web-skip='IP Address' protocol=easydns ssl=yes server=members.easydns.com login=stueng password='****' home.***.** /var/log/syslog Jun 4 13:02:34 XBMCuntu ddclient[10554]: WARNING: file /var/cache/ddclient/ddclient.cache, line 3: Invalid ...

@stueng which answer to which question

I've seen a lot of clueless university students that are asked to use Ubuntu... they need something good with commandline as well, which is not covered by jrg's handbook.

I said in my own answer that it started to work, but it hasnt.. even though ddclient update -force is not giving an error, when I login to easydns it says "offline" for the IP address

@stueng there is no answer to that effect :P

its for 11.10 but its decent enough
@stueng if it was deleted i cant see it :)

ok good

4:53 PM
granted, mods can see it
isnt that right, MODERATOR PEOPLES

@LordofTime thats right. and the poster can also see it i guess.

@LordofTime 10K users can also see it

@Mahesh dont make your manual pay-to-get

@Mahesh No

@AmithKK in theory they're mods by access to the mod tools. they're not official mods.
@AmithKK reread my statement (it was caught in the lag, the change)

4:55 PM
@LordofTime It wont be. It will be cc-by-sa

@Mahesh then why the "I would pay this much for it" line
glares

@LordofTime Still, they only get some powers

lol, thats a leanpub feature.

glares at @Mahesh long enough to cause a rift in time and space to occur behind @Mahesh

glares back :P

4:56 PM
except you're about to be nullified by time. :/
you should run away from that rift :P

I feel like I'm missing a Neil Gaiman reference

i love it when the right collumn is yellow. all stars mine. :D

lol that's 5 stars today! :)

minus me, and thats no stars i guess. :P <attributionrequired/>

argghhh... when I paste text into the question text box editor thing it looses the carriage returns and makes a wall of text. I have copied into notepad and back out again to remove formatting and still does it

4:59 PM
@stueng and this is why you dont copy-paste walls of text that use carriage returns :P

what else can I do with it tho :/

pastebin?

yeah gonna try that internet is being a pita

use paste.ubuntu.com please. not the pastebin

@Mahesh what's wrong with pastebin
esp. if you're pasting private stuff :p

5:01 PM
its blocked in India

that looks succesfull to me ?

wait what? pastebin blocked in india and the spider invasion to the northeast? the end of days is coming i say

@aking1012 how do you think i became a Time Lord? Time itself is bleeding, so i absorbed all that temporal energy and it mutated my DNA to become a Time Lord.

you are not a Time Lord, you are a Lord of Time

@stueng Lords of Time are automatically Time Lords. Subsequently, Time Lords are Lords of Time

5:03 PM
@aking1012 You dont want to be in India at times, seriously. And please, dont search news on India. :/

yeah, time lord doesn't auto-complete Lord to LoT

learn logic
@aking1012 i cant have duplicate accounts :P

@Mahesh I wasn't, it came up in one of my feeds

ANYWAYS

india is 38 degrees at 10pm and 110% humid atm

5:04 PM
<doctor who reference>
its still decided that I shall bring forth the end of Time itself, by the Council of the Time Lords
</doctor who reference>

yes ANYWAYS --> paste.ubuntu.com/1023502
^ success right ?
I thought you were THE lord of time, now I learn you are just one of many? theres a whole council of them?
who isnt a lord of time these days huh

@LordofTime <doctorWhoReference fact='its still decided that I shall bring forth the end of Time itself, by the Council of the Time Lords' />

@stueng i'm what's left, after I brought the downfall of Gallifrey.
wiped out the time lords and gallifrey, became the only Lord of Time

so who;s on this council then

you mean who was on the council :P

5:07 PM
something fishy goin on tbh

'tis irrelevant, since they're all gone
@stueng perhaps. or perhaps it is you that is not able to comprehend the intricacies of Time.
returns to what he was doing before

@LordofTime which is nothing. :P

if you were any good at being a time lord you wouldnt have to return to what you were doing before, you'd just be there, without having to return to it

^ point I say

Why does my question is not answered anymore? Are there lack of experts in askubuntu ?

5:09 PM
@Mahesh Actually, its me annoying people in this thread for resetting it back to "0" every few minutes. ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11998016#post11998016
@varunit have patience
@varunit and which question

@LordofTime, here is the question askubuntu.com/questions/145942

eww .mov

pings @fossfreedom coz he remembers someone wanting mods.

hmmm - hiya what's up?

@varunit I like .mov as a native, but that sounds a lot like a bug to be filed against the vlc package -- see the bug report section of the faq

5:12 PM
@stueng, yep. This is the reaction of people when they see any questions regarding mov files

^^ lol

30 mins ago, by Lord of Time
moderators are the ones to be poked
@fossfreedom ^^ looks like @LordofTime has something for u.

BBT
Good Night

Alright guys, here is my next challenge askubuntu.com/questions/146385

37 mins ago, by Lord of Time
@Marco do we ever migrate things to StackOverflow?
36 mins ago, by Ashu
is this http://askubuntu.com/questions/146406/help-me-please-with-script ontopic?

5:14 PM
@Mahesh @LordofTime I presume you were referring to that SO migration... politely disagree. I've dropped a comment on that question.

but your comment answered it
yep
yawns
well its almost time for me to have something to do

agreed, but it brought in a discussion on.. do we migrate?

14:30 is almost upon me
one hour and 15 minutes to go

@Mahesh ... we recently discussed this on Meta meta.askubuntu.com/questions/3200/…

yeah, read that. :)
guess some things are not as easy as they are thought to be.

5:17 PM
the emphasis is on "good" ... which I'm struggling to apply on that Q :)

@stueng i know, right? i exist in twenty locations in time right now
simultaneously
so... :P

huh what

Good night guys

o/

@LordofTime We've migrated to most of the SE sites
Though it's preferred to just close OT and have them re-create it over there (with the exception of corner cases)

... ouch ... do you get the impression that linus hates gnome 3 :) plus.google.com/u/0/102150693225130002912/posts/UkoAaLDpF4i

^ is that question still open ?
Im confused
you mean linus

yep :)

well i cleared one of the broken link issues
so brokenlinks.count -= 6

@stueng if you're no longer getting the keyword error then remove it from your question!

5:31 PM
hey, the @GeorgeEdison surfaces
@JorgeCastro and there you are. i have a question for you about bugcontrol
regarding applications for it, outside of the scope explained in the wiki document

Bounty offered: How do I use pm-suspend-hybrid by default instead of pm-suspend? http://askubuntu.com/questions/145443/how-do-i-use-pm-suspend-hybrid-by-default-instead-of-pm-suspend?atw=1 #suspend

5:55 PM
@LordofTime what do you mean?

6:27 PM

6:37 PM
@Jorge Castro You Got it:)

@fossfreedom I love it...I couldn't stop loll-ing at but also fixes it so that I can get multiple terminals without doing the whole "three times widdershins and left-click" dance.

7:19 PM
My fun task for today: poisoning DNS lookups on my home machine to test a server without actually modifying DNS records.

jrg
7:39 PM
@GeorgeEdison isn't that called "/etc/hosts"? ;)

On Unix, yes. On Windows it's called %SYSTEM32%\drivers\etc\hosts.
Same idea.

jrg
same difference.

Except it's about a billion times more troublesome to edit on Windows :)

It is?
All I had to do was open the file, add the IP address and hostname, and save it.

izx
8:11 PM
@MarcoCeppi Come now, surely Windows requiring elevation to edit hosts is a good thing?

izx
8:23 PM
@jokerdino I was aware of the global context of "soup" (courtesy that translation), but in retrospect, it could certainly apply locally too ;)

Bounty offered: How to restrict users on changing their wallpapers? http://askubuntu.com/questions/36276/how-to-restrict-users-on-changing-their-wallpapers?atw=1 #gnome

8:37 PM
@GeorgeEdison my experience has been "OH I UPDATED THE FILE BUT WINDOWS Y U NO USE IT LIVE"

My experience was a reboot fixed that

@aking1012 Considering I edit my hosts file several times a day, it's not a good solution.

@MarcoCeppi This is true
Isn't their a thin DNS proxy in python you can run and inject arbitrary values instead as well?

If I want to use a remote syslog server but I also have an intermittent internet connection, do any of the syslog daemons out there already handle buffering and transmitting the data when the server becomes available?

that is an awesome question!

8:57 PM
hello

1 hour later…
10:18 PM
anyone alive

izx
Yes but Ragnarok is here and we're busy... :P

10:42 PM
@izx I added a comment dunno if you got it. I am wondering if in the scenario where I have my disks chopped up with RAID 5 array accross 3 disks and RAID 1 accross the empty space within 2 disks if I can migrate the RAID 1 to RAID 5 when I replace a lesser capacity disk with a greate one later on?
greater*
ragnarok as in a titan in EVE online ?

izx
11:00 PM
@stueng Yes, mdadm should let you migrate the RAID1 to a RAID5. And no, not into MMORPGs, was just being snarky :P

11:27 PM
does mdadm have a pretty UI or all command line ?

izx
@stueng It may have one, I've always used CLI

11:45 PM
Can you answer this? machine froze during upgrade to 12.04 http://askubuntu.com/questions/130038/machine-froze-during-upgrade-to-12-04?atw=1 #upgrade

izx
@stueng: "The SHR is based on a Linux RAID management system." And sources are available, so you should be able to replicate everything they do within the limits of your NAS hardware.
