You should not tag that question with since it has nothing to do with apt-get.

i thought maybe the way i am obtaining the source
is not the right way
thats why i included it

People would tell you that by reading the question not the tag. You use that tag if you have a question regarding apt-get. ;)

okay im removing it
turns out you already did
thanks

Already did that for you. :)

so you go around editing everyones questions but never answering them? :)

Q: GTK2 source code from repositories has an error and does not compile

Eren TantekinHow is this possible? I download the source code for GTK2, try to compile it but it has an error. sudo apt-get source libgtk2.0-0 sudo apt-get build-dep libgtk2.0-0 cd gtk+2.0-2.24.6/ ./configure --prefix=/usr make And I get an error: In file included from gtkquery.c:26:0: gtkquery.h:31:...

It is if it is not a dupe and is in the context of Ubuntu, which it is.

6:24 PM
xD

:)
has anyone used a galaxy note here
im thinking about getting one
and has anyone used ubuntu one an any android phone?

@ErenTantekin iPad is the way to go :P :D

@ErenTantekin Yes I am using U1 on Android.

why would you compare it to dropbox
how*
is it better

I don't use the files thing on the phone
but I use the music player alot

6:38 PM
Well both are good. I mean Dropbox and U1. I just prefer U1 because it is integrated in Ubuntu. :)
I'm already working on the PyroCMS charm by the way. @JorgeCastro :)
Weird somehow my windows just disappear.

Q: How to host a FTP Server? GUI preffered

Sarvesh LadI want to host an ftp server. I want to share a few files with my friends back in India. They are huge and torrent doesn't seem to connect. I want a simple setup with a user and a simple password that can access only a certain folder that I define.

DUPE!
@OctavianDamiean oh yeah?

@ErenTantekin ok, answered your question quickly before I run off...

A: GTK2 source code from repositories has an error and does not compile

ajmitchThis happens because the source package that you've downloaded has pre-set flags that are passed to configure, along with a number of other steps that are laid out in debian/rules. Prior to building, if you've made changes to the package you should add a new revision in debian/changelog To build...

@JorgeCastro There must be a window-eating something in my desktop somewhere.
The window definitely is still open though. It is a gnome-terminal instance connected to a VM instance via SSH so I can for sure tell that it is still connected.
But the window is gone.

Hello, can someone please help me with the following question? I need my animation rendered overnight so I can turn it in on Monday. Thanks! askubuntu.com/questions/76143/…

8:08 PM
no clue on that one

@William you may need to check if audio codecs are allright (see here) - but I have almost no experience on that.

Well, thanks for loking, anyway.
Thanks Takkat, I'll look into it.

your tag edits are awesome btw
I am out of approves for the day already, heh

Thanks, I try.
I find it funny/peculiar that no one has done a tag edit for camera before.

8:17 PM
I'm going to set up a shared doc. in a second.

Sounds good. For what? :D

@William what's wrong with VLC? I did it without any problems
hi btw

It's probably something with my audio codecs in blender.

may be, it was last week i did it and it worked fine

A: Link to "view reputation changes" from user page (under user image) has incorrect underline position

Octavian DamieanThe problem is a CSS rule of the class .summarycount. vertical-align: middle; This is causing the underline to appear way higher up than it should.

high-fives for a fixed AU bug

I was talking to ajmitch last night...

Wireless option gone from Network Center http://askubuntu.com/questions/76207/wireless-option-gone-from-network-center #wireless

...and he thought the Lens doesn't need to go into /opt.

ohrly?

I've outlined the packages in the Google Doc.
...some of the files make no sense in /opt like the init.d scripts.

8:37 PM
why are there init scripts?

For the local data server.

oh
hmmm, maybe that should be a real package then?
but then we have to put that in the archive. :-/

jrg
George, have you considered you might be making this too complex? :)

I thought the opposite was the case...
...separating packages seemed to simplify everything.

jrg
Ok. Yay for simple things!

8:39 PM
After all - it makes no sense to have the data dumps in with the server / lens / etc.

jrg
Subjective/not a real question? - askubuntu.com/questions/76203/ubuntu-11-10-is-slow
Yeah, you're right.

well, I don't think they planned for desktop apps to have things like init scripts, etc. when they built her chewey

@jrg A dupe at the least :)
@JorgeCastro It's not really a desktop app.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison A dupe, seriously? WHERE?!

It's a Python console application.
@jrg Maybe this.

jrg
8:41 PM
@GeorgeEdison Eh... doesn't look like a dupe of that..

Well, in that case perhaps it isn't a dupe.
You're right - vote to close.

jrg
Ok, I've got nothing to do until the Ubuntu Missouri IRC meeting tonight, so if you guys are game I'm going to be going through a bunch of abandoned questions and voting to close, then dumping them in here/somewhere - you guys want in on the "action"?

@JorgeCastro: So where does that leave me? Should I be modifying the packages in any way? Should I be talking to Luke about getting the packages into Debian?

I'm in bro
@GeorgeEdison I don't know what the solution is
perhaps posting the thing on the app devel list will get us help
I am pretty sure we won't want the lens itself in the archive though

What is bad about having it in the archive?
I'm really asking out of curiosity.

jrg
8:50 PM
it's for unity, which is Ubuntu-only (for now). And what Jorge said. :P

then we can't update it except every 6 months

Oh!
Debian archives?

things in extras can be updated whenever the author asks

Q: Keyboard goes crazy during installation

bronzebeardI am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my pc and I just can't get it to work. I am using an install cd to do this. I have a usb keyboard and mouse, which make the installer hang as soon as it starts up. I have tried the bios option to turn off USB 2.0 but it doesn't seem to work. When I connect...

Abandoned as well.

8:51 PM
@jrg bummer, I don't think we have enough people around to do all of these as fast as we want

Indeed. We need two more.

jrg
@JorgeCastro Yeah, and I want to save flags for when we're out of close votes....

@JorgeCastro Well the data dump can't go in the archive.

jrg
Wait, you can view a list of close votes, right?
In the mod tools?

8:53 PM
That's for sure.

@GeorgeEdison yeah, this is why I say just post on the mailing list to ask what to do

flag this?

A: Desktop wallpaper won't display images, only colours and gradients

Ranjith SijiThis is a weird problem. In normal desktop it is not happen. As darent said there may be a compiz manager intervention with the desktop wallpaper management. Check the compiz settings manager and the wallpaper settings. Otherwise everything works fine.

i don't even understand what he's saying except "it's maybe the other answer"

jrg
Looked more like a comment to me, and I was kinda unsure on that.

@JorgeCastro Which mailing list?

8:55 PM
/me just leaves it

i think i will too

because i have no proforma comment for that case and i'm lazy :P

It is a comment.

I had "logged in" with my other laptop, and then the cable slipped out cause I was moving stuff

i mean, it's kind of an answer, but not really helpful.

For some reason the proforma comment userscript is bugged on Chromium 14 on 11.10.

works fine in the best browser of the world. :P

DUDE.
there is an exception for lenses
I say we submit the lens
and then figure out the data dump later
but we need to submit the lens right away

8:57 PM
I really wish they had an auto-abandoned state.

even if there were another user with the same problem, i'd prefer a new question...

We gotta be careful with the close reason though!
Closing it as not a real question will give the user a -1.

we close abandoned questions as too localized afaik

8:59 PM
Never knew that.

jrg
I'm leaving comments explaining that it's abandoned, if they feel that's not correct then they can leave a comment/flag it.

Indeed but there was one which was votes as not a real question right now.

jrg
No response since my june comment - askubuntu.com/questions/14396/…

maybe we should do this in a more organized way, looking at all unanswered question by creation time.

jrg
And i'll work my way to the front page as time permits. :P

WilliamI can't seem to get the Leapfrog Crammer study and sound system to show up as a flash drive under ubuntu so I can transfer stuff to it? I don't want to install the leapfrog bloatware, can someone help me with this?

i went through the open close votes today, and it's still pretty hard to close questions with non-mod users only (and afaik those votes get removed after a few days if the question remains open)

yeah, it sucks sometimes
this is why I usually vote n' flag

jrg
Yeah, guess we just have to yell at Marco to go through that NAOW. :P

9:03 PM

Sound Problem due to wrong driver installation
should we really close it? dude was there last thursday.

I'd say yes, most people don't experience a problem longer than a few months/weeks, and that was asked in Feb.

http://askubuntu.com/q/76000/10698
got a close vote on it so edited it a bit...
hope it helps
@jrg is it better now? :)

@OctavianDamiean Nope, Jin is

Q: Link to "view reputation changes" from user page (under user image) has incorrect underline position

ShahbazSimple bug: You go to your user profile, under the image there is your reputation which links to reputation changes (something like this: http://askubuntu.com/users/*****/*******?tab=reputation However, when you hover over that number (your reputation, under your image, in your profile), it is...

Should I add the design tag to this?

@GeorgeEdison AFAIK, the intent of the extras.u.c apps was not to have things like network daemons like the various packages you've made are
I was going to try & bring it up in the UDS session but the remote participation was a complete bucket of fail :)

Can someone please take a look at my recent tag edits? Thanks!

Only if you give me another 1k rep :)

9:37 PM
@jrg I really just want something that is really light and that supports minecraft

@William the problem get fixed? let me know if i can be any of help, we can check it together

@Alvar Everything will support minecraft ...

will?!
@OctavianDamiean hehe, Java is needed...

Q: How do I recover my data from an encrypted home directory?

MartinI have a big problem. When I made a upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 I lost all my data in home directory. I have only data from my home encrypted directory. What can I do? Thanks Martin

@Alvar I know. So?

9:38 PM
I tried installing ffmpeg from the terminal. It wasn't installed. I don't want to start rendering until i'm sure it will work, this is a big animation and takes a long time to render.

it's not always supported for everything....

@htorque that requires that I know something about the question at hand

yeah, that's the problem :-/

why they didn't give top users this instead of a cheap .. T-shirt?

> YOur situation is almost identical to mine I think. I'd love to use your solution but as a newbie the instructions you give are not easy for me to follow.
>
>"Make a backup all encripted data to *.tar file." No idea what this is, how to do it or where.
>
>Was going to continue with quote and response but realise I dont actually understand any of your instructions. can you talk me through this with the understanding that I am very unknowledgable of Linux?

9:39 PM
Oh that is something I know.
Kinda.
I mean something I did once.

the questioner answered it, but another user couldn't follow the steps
for 250 rep, this should of course not be just an edit :D
@Explorer there's a bigger chance of me using the t-shirt than me using that backpack :P
i like ubuntu but i don't need to have its logo everywhere

@William i see, good luck then

@htorque I do!

the logo on your backpack is much better than on your T-shirt or your hand or your .. nose

Can you make a good guess at whether or not it will work?

9:43 PM
i can make a wild guess now, a good one will happen when you explain what you did to me
for me, it was a really simple animation by the way
and i didn't have the sound issue

Well, I installed ffmpeg throught the terminal. I want to know if it will work or not before I render again.
Before, there was no sound in the render, even though it worked fine in blender with sound
btw I'm on Ubuntu 11.10 With Blender 2.57

@William exactly the same versions here
I didn't install any extra packages as i remember

Hmmm... I have Ubuntu restricted extras installed, too.
I made the soundtrack in Audacity
And again, can someone please check over my tag edits?

@William I am

will i am?

9:48 PM
XD
will i am i am

@William Don't make tag wiki excerpts too long, try to keep them under four sentences. Otherwise people won't read them.

hahaha
@Explorer that could be flagged as offensive! ;)

@William The excepts your putting are really more for the Wiki body itself - they're so rich with details :)

flag @htorque's .. the root

i'm the root of all good. :)

9:55 PM
@William you can play the sound from the sequence editor?

oh hell, i'm back to linux from 2003: only one audio input runs at a time (no youtube while running banshee). ^oO^
let me guess what happens if i restart pulseaudio :P

Yes, the sound plays just fine from the video sequence editor. When I press the "play" button in Blender, It plays with sound.

when it doesn't play?
hey i guess i know the problem
the problem is that ffmpeg
did you install it?
if it doesn't work again, you should download another version of blender
that version doesn't support it

@jrg will try lubuntu, it seems to be quite good...

I did install ffmpeg from terminal just now. Should that make the final render have sound?

10:02 PM
yes
and if not, just reinstall it

Thanks, that's all I need to know.

I just closed 8 tabs on just askubuntu... haha :P

if it doesn't work , download it from here: blender.org/download/get-blender
and reinstall

Ok, thanks for the help!

@htorque Lies! Youtube didn't even exit in 2003. :D

10:14 PM

good night all!

Can someone please check my tag edits(lol, I made made one for microsoft)
I stopped the render 130 frames in and looked at the file. There wasn't any sound. Should I be concerned?

@William Try to keep opinions out of tags

Well, this is an ubuntu site, your'e talking about, and I think that 99.99% of the people on this site would agree with me
Anyway, thanks for peer reviewing the tags

@William still no sound?

wow I love PyroCMS.

it's an answer to your question!

10:42 PM
I'm super pumped for this cycle

I installed ffmpeg through terminal. I have MPEG as an output option, but not ffmpeg.
Another thing: I'm not seeing all my keyframes in the timeline, just the one at the beginning. Why?

what's written in front of format panel?

@MarcoCeppi Same here. I don't know why though. :D
Hmm, now that is going to be interesting. I mean the example is nice and all but how am I supposed to write a hook for PyroCMS if it is lacking such a cool thingy like Drush for Drupal? :/

what?\

The Writing a charm tutorial shows how to write one for Drupal which has a nice script for command line based installation apparently.

10:51 PM
You can do a command line install for PyroCMS too...you just have to write a script for it :)

hehe
Yea that is the point. Let's find out what I need.

The only real configuration is the stuff written to the config file and then the database creation
That's pretty much all the install does

What output panel? (treat me like a beginner, I opened blender for the first time a week and a half ago)
/me is frustrated

If only PyroCMS wouldn't split all that data up into several separate files ...

11:00 PM
@ajmitch: So it will need to go into the Software Center then?

Alright. The easy part is done. The metadata.yaml. Now to the really interesting part.

@MarcoCeppi Same here. IS EXCITED
