Why does Ask Ubuntu matter to my LoCo, and how should we use it? http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/2074/why-does-ask-ubuntu-matter-to-my-loco-and-how-should-we-use-it
Microsoft has a majority market share in the new desktop PC marketplace.
This is a bug, which Ubuntu is designed to fix.
Non-free software is holding back innovation in the IT industry, restricting access to IT to a small part of the world's population and limiting the ability of software developers to reach their full potential, globally. This bug is widely evident in the PC industry.
Steps to repeat:
1. Visit a local PC store.
What happens:
2. Observe that a majority of PCs for sale have non-free software pre-installed.
3. Observe very few PCs with Ubuntu and free software pre-installed.
What should happen:
1. A majority of the PCs for sale should include only free software like Ubuntu.
2. Ubuntu should be marketed in a way such that its amazing features and benefits would be apparent and known by all.
3. The system shall become more and more user friendly as time passes.
yeah, I don't understand why you want those. What are you going to do with them if the upgrade goes wrong?
replacing your system configuration files generally isn't a good idea
it's easier to just download your themes, change your settings and so on, on a fresh install. blindly replacing important config files will break things
Great answer: Why isn't Firefox 8.0 available as an update in the Update Manager? http://askubuntu.com/questions/79186/why-isnt-firefox-8-0-available-as-an-update-in-the-update-manager/79204#79204 #firefox
I want to backup my system and all the files that are necessary for my system to work (note not my music or my videos). I have an external hard drive at 1TB so space isn't a problem.
I want to backup my system (so I restore it later)
I want to leave out my music and videos
I want to be able to ...
I don't know what I need to do just that I like how my system is now, but I want to try other versions of Ubuntu. and I need to know I can make a safe return.
if you back up all your personal files, everything you would want if your laptop was stolen, say, then you can just re-install everything if the upgrade goes wrong
and you don't need to think or worry about your data
Remember this little guy over here?
He's no longer with us in Ubuntu 11.10. Now, a friend's sent me an encrypted file using a public key I think I have the key fore in my keychain. How can I decrypt it?
Jason, knowing the real reason you want to do this, from your previous questions, let me first give you a warning before answering. Compiz 0.8.x is not maintained any more. As I have said over and over and over... Compiz-fusion is dead, and the project is now called Compiz.
That said, if you ins...
DO NOT DOWN VOTE THAT
If you don't agree, don't vote.
I've been answering this guy's questions for a couple weeks or so... and I know where he's going with this.
Is there (or should there even be) a large completely public folder that ALL Ubuntu One users could dump files into to let people have access to their ideas?

Why does Ubuntu recommend download the 32-bit version? On their 32bit_and_64bit Page they even say
Unless you have specific reasons to choose 32-bit, we recommend 64-bit
to utilise the full capacity of your hardware.
Do why does their download page show the 32-bit version as "recommended" ?
I just installed 11.10. Looks nice, but, the application bar is on the left now. That is bad, almost 100% of the applications I use has some important button on the left side (like the X).
How do I go back to the old way it was, where the bar was on the bottom, and did not disappear onMouseout.
I find both the Tree view and the Places view useful. Changing from one view to the other is not fast because one have to go into the appearance menu. It's even slower with Oneiric because this menu can now be far away.
(Before Unity, I always had the tree view on and I used my bookmarks directly...
If you are using Ubuntu-3D, then you can use bind keyboard keys to terminal commands using CompizConfig Settings Manager.
Download and install CCSM if you don't have it already. Click on "Commands".
The terminal commands to switch between "tree" and "places" are as follows:

Can you answer this? How to make NFS mounts available while offline? http://askubuntu.com/questions/80570/how-to-make-nfs-mounts-available-while-offline #sync
@jokerdino It looks good to me, but I think it would be better to set the shortcuts in the Keyboard utility instead of CompizConfig Settings Manager, since it is installed by default and will work even when not using compiz.
@Alvar Please take a look at the backup comments and see if you don't want to make a couple of edits. You won't mind me saying, they are just a little bit too shouty for my taste. :)
Method specific to Compiz / Ubuntu-3D:
If you are using Ubuntu-3D, then you can use bind keyboard keys to terminal commands using CompizConfig Settings Manager.
Download and install CCSM if you don't have it already. Click on "Commands".
The terminal commands to switch between "tree" and "...
Moderate the answer! Thank you very much awesome people!
If I try to search in the files lens, nothing happens (all files still shown). The list of files is current, and the other lenses can all be searched.
Edit: Dupe of Unity "Files & Folders" lens can't find anything
Solution 1 works.
From the manpage of apt-get.
clean clears out the local repository of retrieved package files.
It removes everything but the lock file from
/var/cache/apt/archives/ and /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/. When
APT is used as a dselect(1) method, clean is run automatically.

Is Firefox 8 available for Ubuntu 11.10?
DO I have to change the PPA or something to get Firefox 8 for Ubuntu 11.10?
I still have Firefox 7 even though I updated (sudo aptitude update)
Thanks for answering my silly question.
I have decided to try out Linux Mint instead of the horrible Ubuntu Unity experince.
I have a separate partition for my /home folder, which I'd like to preserve of course. So I'm curious: is it possible for me to install the 64bit version of Mint without user dotfiles making trouble? More specif...
