12:00 AM
@ThomasWard TIME TO START DUDE!

indeed

it's a good thing that it's a short list of applicants

jrg
@ajmitch it's soooooo long dude!

the main problem is usually finding enough board members

Oli
A short list and one isn't there

jrg
12:02 AM
:D
GET ON WITH IT!
i mean, seriously, you decide to go to the pub and get a beer? :P

And a sandwich

jrg
Can't believe I forgot the sandwich. :D

Oli
I could have made five sandwiches in this time.

@Oli the trick is typing while holding both beer & sandwich

Oli
Beerhelmet helps out there

12:10 AM
@BrunoPereira buggy is fine, just getting it out there is a good start
not bad for a day's work!

Oli
I wish I sucked less at SpaceChem. Wonder if there's a Charm for that :(

For sucking less or for SpaceChem? :D

Oli
Yeah

jrg
@ThomasWard congrats, assuming the last guy votes at all. :P

Oli
I'm getting some freaky lag on freenode tonight

12:16 AM
@jrg :P
its a majority anyways

jrg
same here

@Oli it's freenode

@oli they are redoing the IRCDs tho

@ThomasWard yeah, they may need 4 +1s to get quorum though
depends on the team size

true

12:18 AM
there you go, well done

<meetingology> Voting ended on: Resistance Membership
<meetingology> Votes for:4 Votes against:0 Abstentions:0
<meetingology> Motion carried

Congratulations man!

\o/

jrg
Congrats!

thanks :)

12:21 AM
@ThomasWard congrats

Enough design work for today. Let's charm!

jrg
CHARMING TIME! :D

\o/
@OctavianDamiean we're in juju if you have questions

juju does sound interesting, at least

I'm already in that channel. I even failed already in that channel. Ask James. :D

12:28 AM
thanks :)

jrg
haha yeah.

12:41 AM
juju.ubuntu.com/Charms looks rather odd in firefox

jrg
it looks odd period :P

the text flows differently in chrome

ohaidere :)

I'm back now.
@ajmitch How are things coming?

@GeorgeEdison i'm now an ubuntu member :)

12:55 AM
@ThomasWard Sweet!
Would it make sense to make a charm for Django?

Dude, it makes sense to make a charm for everything.

Even notepad? :)

Everything.

I can't fathom a need to run notepad in the cloud, but...

@sadmicrowave: I've not found the solution but reproduced the problem
:) so next I'll try to resolve and let u know

1:10 AM
The stupidity of some people in this world never ceases to amaze me.

@Icedrake How so?

@sadmicrowave: installed server successfully now running config for first run and I need vmmon that is when the problem is, so I [ctrl-c]ed the installation process once it was at the point of building vmmon and asking for c sources
@sadmicrowave: started config from installation directory
@sadmicrowave: this time it takes proper sources: /lib/modules/3.0.0-12-generic/build/include <-- I assume its correct cause installation moves further

jrg
I'm making life difficult for myself by insisting on compiling ruby from source for this charm..... :P

@sadmicrowave: still have to figure /tmp/vmware-config0/vmmon-only/linux/driver.c:39:28: fatal error: linux/smp_lock.h: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
I hope he is online as he said :P
and I see I've smp_lock.h in 2.6.38-11 version of kernel and not in 3.0.0-12 version

jrg
1:28 AM
dangit @JorgeCastro, i was going to finish homework tonight, but you got me sucked into the charmin' craze. :P
(just a side note - i will get my homework done tonight, just not before 12AM. :P)

lol isn't that always the case? unless homework is due at 11.59pm ?

jrg
you are indeed wise oh great @wisemonkey. :P

ohh am I now? :P

@JorgeCastro can please help me out checking why am I getting that error?

jrg
whut. ruby needs to compile it's own openssl?! The system one isn't good enough...?!

1:32 AM
@jrg: why do u have little pencil symbol in front of ur posts/chats?
special privileges?

jrg
means i've edited them.

He's got special skills :O

thought so :P

Most certainly. :D

Indeed! Subscribed to and
@BrunoPereira You should split that question up in two separate questions.
1
Q: What is a charm and how do I create one?

Bruno PereiraAs the title says, what is a charm and what tools / methods do I need to use to create one?

First one, What is a Juju Charm? and the second one How do I create Juju Charms?

jrg
1:43 AM
@OctavianDamiean i beg to differ
they are so intertwined, i'd keep them in the same question
it's like "what is a ppa, and how do i use it?"
89
Q: What are PPAs and how do I use them?

Jorge CastroI keep reading about Personal Package Archives and people answer questions with a link to a PPA. What's the best way to use these? There are multiple valid answers for this question spanning over several versions of Ubuntu. For your convenience an index of each below. Ubuntu 11.04 & 11.1...

done, slipted

I'm not sure if using and developing are to be compared.

jrg
Ok. :)
@BrunoPereira hey, split questions=twice as many upvotes=twice as much rep! :D

lol I just searched for juju charm and realized its actually something in Ubuntu otherwise I would have sworn that u guys are making stuff in the air :-/

I mean the question could be What is a Charm and how do I use it? or What is a Charm and what do I use it for? or something like that.

jrg
1:45 AM
lol, we are making stuff in the air, just in the CLOUDY AMAZON AIR! :P

haha so I was partially correct :P

jrg
TO THE CLOUD! I MEAN, ITS A CLOUD! :D

I'm reading juju.ubuntu.com/Charms it tells me all about contributing, modifying and yada yada but seriously what is it??

jrg
Ok.
so, you install stuff via sudo apt-get install <package> normally, right?

yup

jrg
1:48 AM
well, charms is like packaging.
except you package a service
so lets say we need a wordpress site, and we need it NOW
juju deploy wordpress

jrg
boom
done
it's deployed.

but u need to put a content that goes on website right?

jrg
this instead of apt-get for a package on a machine, this is a way to deploy a service.
yes
(i think chat.se is throttling me. :P)

hmm ok so if I understand it properly services like dropbox/ubuntu One can be deployed but say I want to name them differently
?

jrg
1:51 AM
then you'd have to hack the charm.
to change the name

ohh but if they have some cloud storage service called "xyz" I can deploy it and give it to my user / organization ?

jrg
yup

ahh ok I think I'm getting it
cool thanks :)

I can't believe how late it got. This charmin' makes me lose my sense of time!
It is 3 a.m. in 7 minutes!

in 5 here

1:56 AM
8:55 here in Massachusetts.
PM.

I'm out for now. Catch you later.

night

Thank goodness tomorrow is Friday. Taking the best academic classes available sure takes a lot out of you. >.<

I wish I can :-/ need to go back to school :P

I literally have no social life right now.

1:59 AM
good times :)

For example, last Sunday, woke up at 8 A.M., did schoolwork till 6 P.M. straight.
No breakfast or lunch.

urmm thats too much I can't go without eating

jrg
yeah, what opportunities you might have for a social life are spent here on askubuntu. :P

@jrg That's a summary of my social life right there.

jrg
:P

2:00 AM
yey it always happens to me in one way or other either I spend time gaming or on forums :-/

Can't remember the last time I did some gaming. ^^

and believe me people discuss same thing -- not having social life cause spending time there hehe :P

I remember playing some Minecraft like 6 months ago...

I'm waiting for firefall hopefully it will be as good as hype is

@jrg are you using the environments.yaml example file in the documentation?

2:03 AM
@wisemonkey I think we're in the wrong chat for general discussion lol

agreed but good to have a break once in a while (as long as it doesn't get outta hands ;))

but yeah, Firefall looks sick.
But my terribad computer probably can't support it. I was planning on getting a new one with Sandy Bridge, but since Intel is going to come out with Ivy Bridge soon, I decided to wait for that.

yup u should

jrg
@BrunoPereira where?
wait, yes i am.

Bounty offered: How to reflow text in a terminal when you resize? http://askubuntu.com/questions/66315/how-to-reflow-text-in-a-terminal-when-you-resize #terminal

Is it worth switching to Fedora if all I'm using is Gnome-Shell?
I don't think I'll be using Unity for a while.

well why were u using ubuntu until now?
there was gnome before anyways whether u take ubuntu or fedora

I don't really know lol
I've only started to use Gnome-Shell since yesterday
and it's quickly become my favorite

hehe same here anyways so I started as suse user tried fedora but switched to ubuntu 3 years back and stayed here cause ubuntuforums or askubuntu are just that awesome :)

By the way

2:27 AM
plus people come up with ppa really easily
so u get packages easily
rather than compiling

mm

and if u r using gnome-shell then try webupd8 ppa

It's funny how some of my programs only seem to work correctly when I'm using Gnome-Shell
and not Unity
so Unity seems pretty useless for me atm

there is some nice stuff
anyways time to leave from work :P catch u in sometime or laters

Andrei had a PPA?
Alright later

2:30 AM
can I ask a question like: "where did the name from the tool juju came from in AU?>

no one can really answer that one
it's best if we just forget about the name. :)

@jrg what was the turn out?
I not too long got back home

juju is hot woman in br portuguese :P

juju is obeah/witchcraft/nu-uh/keepthatawayfromme... in many African/Caribbean cultures :)
Not exactly easy to promote here :)

lol
@JorgeCastro still have no activity on the debug and status tells same thing
time to go, gn all

2:54 AM
One of my friends email accounts must have been hacked... I'm getting really strange emails from "him".

@GeorgeEdison does he use Windows?

Probably.
Thankfully Gmail is smart enough to flag it as spam even though it came from my friend's email address.

I think he's probably using Windows. Is he using Hotmail?

Yes.
Well, Windows Love / Hotmail - same thing.

Yes, he got taken in by a popular virus that affects Hotmail users on Windows.
It spreads through Windows Live Messenger and sometimes Facebook.
I got so tired with it, I stopped signing into MSN lol :)

3:09 AM
How does it happen?

I'm not 100% certain, because I never had it. All I know is, it seems to be partly passive, and partly based on social engineering.
Some people seem to pick it up at random from infected contacts, and others clicked on the links in the fake messages and got it.
Brb - upgraded to Firefox 11.

@JorgeCastro: I kind of forget... if I want to let someone know that StackApplet 1.5 is released so that it gets uploaded to Debian and Precise syncs it from Debian, where do I file a bug?

Thanks.

Wow...
Firefox 11 is even faster than 10!
(I'm so glad they are making Firefox feel faster at last)

3:21 AM
@JorgeCastro ...but is that to get a sync from Debian or from upstream?

from debian
lfaraone did it last time iirc
might just want to send him a mail

2 hours later…
5:15 AM
@JorgeCastro Done!

5:29 AM
Can you answer this? How can one unlock a fully encrypted Ubuntu 11.10 system over SSH at boot? http://askubuntu.com/questions/66785/how-can-one-unlock-a-fully-encrypted-ubuntu-11-10-system-over-ssh-at-boot #boot

5:55 AM
Hmmm... Luke pointed out a problem with StackApplet to me: the web interface allows other users to configure your instance of the application... :(
Can anyone see the StackApplet logo above?
...or is it a broken image?
(Note: this question is intended for users running StackApplet.)

@GeorgeEdison me can .
@GeorgeEdison u mean in stackapplet?

One sec...
Can you see it now?
@Alvar I mean in the image in chat above.

no

...or do you just see "image not found"?

it just loads

6:02 AM
You mean you can see the logo above?

no I cant

Whew.

That's a good sign. Thank you, @Alvar.

:)

Ask Ubuntu General Room

General discussion around Ubuntu & Ask Ubuntu and official Ubuntu derivatives.

Ubuntu is an open-source operating system.
What are you asking?

Rob
I don't know what an open-source operating system is...

6:10 AM
An operating system consists of the software needed to load and run applications.
Microsoft Windows and Apple's OS X are examples of other operating systems.

Rob
ok
thanks

@Rob Do you currently use Ubuntu?
...or are you just here to check it out?

Rob
just checking it out
how do you put that red @ thing up?

Cool. Feel free to ask questions.
@Rob Next to each message is a down arrow. Click that and then click "reply to message."

Rob
:2466267
like that?
:2466262

6:13 AM
Yup, except you need to type a message after it.

Rob
@GeorgeEdison it doesn't work

It does.
Your last message worked perfectly.

Rob
I don't get the "red" part

I'm the only one that will see the red text.
...but try moving your mouse over the message you sent and the message you were replying to should be highlighted.

Rob
oooh I get it now
cool
the high lighting part
@GeorgeEdison Thanks for the tips George

6:17 AM
Yeah, it helps keep track of conversations.
@Rob No problem.

Rob
bye

@StefanoPalazzo: A Google ad that made me think of you:
No clue what it is... just that I've never seen Python code in an ad before.

8:36 AM
Can you answer this? How to change to default english language? http://askubuntu.com/questions/69761/how-to-change-to-default-english-language #locale

@GeorgeEdison I know exactly what that is. it took me a while to implement their service
and it was rather frustrating at times
they've been taunting me for a while :)
great ad

8:51 AM
@StefanoPalazzo Cool.
Well, it's nearly 1AM here... night all.

see you :)

Congratz @ThomasWard
@OctavianDamiean Hello
Looks like, if your sparingly active but contributing and have followers (which I had a huge lack of) you become a member!
Hey @Oli

Oli
12:48 PM
Hi @AmithKK
I think it's more than just having followers. Your wiki lets you down. That page really needs to sell what you've done. If you have fewer contributions, you need to make sure those that you have done are listed in their entirety.

Suggestions Please?

Oli
And the membership boards love "real life" participation. Being active online is one thing but if you're active in a loco, attend events, give talks, etc, you're almost certain to get in (after you've shown sustained contribution)
Well one of the things that they were asking about was to see your posts on 2buntu. You sort of stumbled there saying they were lost in a server crash. If you want to mention it, make sure those posts get back online, even if you have to rewrite them.

@Oli 1. I Dont like hindi(admitted it) 2. The LoCo here is Pretty much Hindi only 3. Events?, I barely go out(banned)
Its rewrite time then!

Oli
And a highlight of your best answers here (citing why they're so good, showing you're willing to go the extra mile, etc) wouldn't hurt.
If your best answers could be better, improve them.

@Oli ok

Yeah I think that's probably a good example
If you wanted to boost your profile on Ask Ubuntu, it wouldn't hurt if you were more active with site moderation tasks, like flagging bad posts. You've not done too much in that department and that's an easy (if labour intensive) way of helping out on the site if you don't want to answer a billion questions.

@Oli Looks nice :)

Interesting. My last flag was disputed. Would love to know why.

@OctavianDamiean did you flag something "invalid" or did someone else flag it invalid?

1:17 PM
@htorque Well I flagged something and apparently it was disputed.

@wisemonkey thanks for the help! I'm having trouble with my connection and apt-get's at this moment so I can't do too much in the realm of installing headers. Did you ever get past the last fatal error?

Any thoughts on my Ubuntu Wiki about me page?
Updated again.
Some testimonials and my wiki page is ready. :)

Oli
1:53 PM
@OctavianDamiean Stick your flair on there. And get some metrics and more examples on there for your contributions. For metrics, there are a few data.stackexchange.com links in my wiki page. And for your other contributions say what you've done.

Do first-time updates take awhile when I've changed out system hardware as they do when I've upgraded or installed a new OS?

Oli
Examples are important because, just being a member of something doesn't equate contribution. The one thing that makes me wince is under contributions "juju Charm Contributor" and below in aims: "I'm currently working on my first juju Charm". The second steals from the first.

@sadmicrowave usually not, as most of the hardware related software stuff is part of the kernel.

jrg
@AmithKK you cut 'n pasted my wikipage wholesale didn't you?! :D\

@Oli I see.

Oli
1:58 PM
@sadmicrowave You've change the hardware underneath an existing installation and it's now taking longer to update? That shouldn't be the case.

@Oli, @htorque well I'm trying to figure out if it's corporate proxy that slowing the connection or the fact that it is trying to update different items

corp proxy.

Oli
Why are you sending somebody a private key anyway? Surely they should just be sending your their public key.

jrg
access to ec2 instance.
the client needs a keypair,
and they insist on using this one

Oli
Not too sure how ec2 authenticates but if they have an AWS account of their own, they can generate a keypair in the control panel and just send you the public key so that you can allow that in (I would imagine - that's how I'd do it with SSH)

What about encrypting your message before sending it?

jrg
@OctavianDamiean hm, with pgp?

2:10 PM
Yea.
However I think that Oli is right. There has to be another option other than sending your private key.

jrg
hmm...
yeah, i don't like it either.
dead drop time. :P
I love this idea (HUGE security risk though)
