@Je
@JeffAtwood is there a simple way to search in our own questions/answers ?
versus moving page by page in order to search it :)

yes see askubuntu.com/search specifically user:me

thanks :)
dang, that's easy :D

10:13 AM
oops, just playing around! sorry!
To create a service that can be used via upstart, I just need to create a script in /etc/init.d/ and do a update-rc.d <script>, is that right?

yes, but native upstart jobs are in /etc/init
for upstart jobs no update-rc.d is needed - its filename just has to end with ".conf"

Basically, I want to run some stuff, and want to be able to shut it down, both via upstart. atm, I kill it manually by ps ax-ing and grep-ing it, and killing it using the pid. I guess I can put all the starting and killing in a script, but thats not a good idea. What do you think, @htorque

sure, you can do this in upstart scripts, but i don't know how :P

yeah, ill figure that out ;) just needed to ask if that was correct!

just make it a question and wait for the answers coming in ;-)

10:26 AM
if you say so!

Q: Want to make an upstart script; need help and advice.

Kaustubh PAtm, I need to randomly start and stop (for lack of a better word in my mind) a job. I start it by typing java -jar foo.jar and to stop it find out its pid and kill it. Killing it doesn't cause any data loss or corruption or anything, just FYI. Its tedious to do both these steps because the first...

@htorque i just told my mom about and you, and u have your 2nd fan :P

Oli
11:13 AM
@htorque why do you get all the fans?
@KaustubhP Posted an answer

@Oli because there are two(!!!) posts related to me on OMG! Ubuntu! - what else to expect from life? :P

hello all :)

9 Power_On_Hours          0x0032   092   092   000    Old_age   Always       -       12346588876956059
i don't think that's right :D
@StefanoPalazzo hello! :-)

Oli
@htorque SMART?

@Oli yes, S.M.A.R.T. on a SSD

Oli
11:21 AM
@htorque Hmm yeah the last time I checked my OCZ's SMART data it was all over the place

@Oli how do you keep track of power-on time? or just "don't care"?

I'm just checking mine, all of the data seems to be correct

@StefanoPalazzo is it an OCZ one?

Oli
@htorque Mine is on all the time... I could just compare it to a mechanical disk if I really want to know

it's a kingston one

11:22 AM
probably an OCZ thing then

and it's on almost as long as I have it, 18.5 days

@Oli yeah, my script looks similar ;) paste.ubuntu.com/555361 I think i only messed up the run levels.

"Head Flying Hours: N/A" (:

Oli
@KaustubhP As I say in the post, you might not even want the start command, if you just want to start it from the command like when you need it

"Head Crashes: N/A" :D

Oli
11:24 AM
That's reassuring

@Oli Just didnt add the su -c bit because it will go on a debian system that i ssh into. Is it possbile to not end up in a root shell after ssh-ing?

never had such a wonderful experience - i always replace my hard drives after 10.000 power-on hours... let's see how this works with SSDs :)

Oli
@htorque apparently the newer smartmontools can decipher what the ocz drives really mean

@Oli will give it a try, thanks!

@htorque I bet this is all a myth and that this ssd won't break until I throw it out anyway (I've got 120 euros riding on it, hehe)

Oli
11:29 AM
Hmm no apparently 5.39 should do (Maverick's is 5.40)
I have a raw value of 8355 for Power_On_Hours
Although I've seen that raw values tend to mean very little
But I've probably had it for a year... so that would make sense

the disk utility should show you power on hours in human readable form

Oli
9 Power_On_Hours 0x0000 --- --- --- Old_age Offline - 8355 from smartctl

powered on "unknown"
maybe it's a 64-bit thing?
will try a 32-bit cd :)
or maybe it's broken - it doesn't make any noise! :D

Oli
And the entry in palimpsest (seriously, who came up with that name?!) is 163-32-0-N/A which seems a lot further off

temperature 1°C - what a cool piece of hardware!

Oli
11:36 AM
I don't see any temperature on mine :(
I'm getting bored of mine... Considering trying to justify a PCI-E SSD to the better half
Whoa. You can get a 120gig Revo drive for only £220... That's a lot cheaper than it's been

"the faster my data loads the more time i'll have for you" (yeah, sure!)

Oli
I like it!
My mouth is watering at the prospect of 480MB/s-540MB/s
Deleted -- Forgot I could edit posts

reads a full cd in a bit over a second :D

Oli
And if I'm getting that, I could probably justify an i7 980X
Hmm maybe not... Bank account might implode

nope, same with 32-bit

11:50 AM
@Oli extremely sorry to interrupt. I restarted the system, and I still cant access the job.

hii all can anyone tell me how to install ati graphics driver in ubuntu

Oli
@KaustubhP How are you trying to start it?

hey oli can you please tell me how to install ati graphics driver in ubuntu

`sudo service job start`
`start: Unknown job: job`

Oli
@KaustubhP Just saw your comment on the post. You don't need update-rc.d
@KaustubhP And what's the name of the /etc/init/...conf script?

11:59 AM
@Oli I also created a file by the same name (the name is job) in /etc/init.d/ and the job now shows up in autocomplete

Oli
@codeomnitrix Sorry - I moved to Nvidia hardware when I moved to Linux.. ATI isn't my area, I'm afraid

@codeomnitrix is this a fresh install of ubuntu?

ya
@Oli ok
@KaustubhP ya this is a fresh install of ubuntu

@codeomnitrix check this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonHD

smartmontools from trunk works fine

Oli
12:00 PM
@KaustubhP Well it should be in /etc/init/ if you want it to be called job (not sure I'd recommend that because it's confusing) it should be /etc/init/job.conf. And then start job should run it. You shouldn't need to restart.
@htorque cool... it give extra information now?

i'll check if ubuntu's smartmontools isn't configured to include a drive database to interpret the raw values
not extra information, but correct one :)

Oli
Just as good =)

ohk, ill rename it to something more readable. but I still get the no such job error/

Oli
@KaustubhP Well I just tested this and it works here
oli@bert:/etc/init$ sudoedit /etc/init/myjob.conf
**pasted in my script**
oli@bert:/etc/init$ sudo start myjob
myjob start/running, process 1865
@KaustubhP Are you using an old version of Ubuntu?

@Oli its 10.04

Oli
12:07 PM
Hmm that should work just fine
Although I can't test because all my machines are either 9.10 or 10.10

@Oli Tried again with a diff name, and these contents, still the same error. your code worked fine though.

Oli
@KaustubhP You mean when you used my script it worked fine?
I think you can only have one exec line

Yes, I only changed the java part at the end to a echo statemnt. I got a message saying the job has started, but did not get the echo.

Oli
If you want to do more than one thing, either wrap it in something like su -c "..." or bash -e "..."
Or use a script block instead of exec
Under Writing Jobs

I have seen that documentation, and thats why i am more flummoxed, that I have done everything as mentioned, and I still cant get it working

Oli
12:20 PM
@KaustubhP Oh that's probably because it's suppressing the echo... I think there's another command to have it output to the console
yeah last bit in Writing Jobs
exec echo example
console output
That might output to TTY1 if you don't see it in your current xterm

@Oli yeah, iremoved the two lines, now it works. :p
added a console output but still dont see a output, i think that needs to be looked into//

Oli
@KaustubhP Looking at the docs, it's not quite as simple as it looks... You might have to manually wire it to a running console
But you could easily have it echo something to a new file: `exec echo "RAWRW" > /root/test

@Oli also, ~ doesnt work in the file/ I have to give the full path.

Oli
@KaustubhP Yeah that goes without saying... It's not running in bash after all

Oh. I didnt know that. :/
Well, the good news is the pre-script is working. but the java part isnt

Oli
12:33 PM
try using its full path: /usr/bin/java

Anybody running KDE?

@Oli yes, used the full path, also since it use the -e flag, it was exiting. I fixed the jar and now its running.

1:03 PM
has anyone installed debian from the net install?

1:31 PM
Yes, and no.

no and yes....

We do a "psuedo net-install" but point all of our installs to our own local apt cache

can i install my graphics drivers via the command prompt sense I can't seem to open the 'additional drivers' program?

Sure

how do i do that?

1:35 PM
sudo apt-get install name-of-driver

how do I know what driver I need?

That might be a good question for the main site

asked

@StefanoPalazzo your atheist friends proved me right once again :)

my friends?

1:44 PM
on At.S.E

A.SE is Apple

It was a figure of speech to call them your friends :)

At.SE is Atheism

First, they called a theory, evolution - confirmed!
it's not

Why don't we take this over here?

1:45 PM
evolution is a theory is it not?

nvm
yes it is
but Marco doesn't want us to discuss certain "off topic" topics...
so I'm done

Looks for the At.SE room
It's not that it's off-topic here, it's more on-topic there

don't

just like he doesn't want us to discuss certian political figures...

if I show you the transcript you will see why

1:46 PM
Looks like they don't have one

Theory, (countable) (sciences) A coherent statement or set of statements that attempts to explain observed phenomena.

basically - if you are trying to have a "conversation" with them - forget it

@RolandTaylor I'd love to talk to you about it

@StefanoPalazzo I know :)

I'm reading through the conversation, btw, looks like they didn't take you very seriously

1:48 PM
I've had a lot of agnostic and atheist friends irl - I love them with all my heart - but I can only take so much of the pointless arguments over things even if you show them they are wrong - not saying all are that way - but just saying I'm tired of hearing you're not an intellectual when I am

@RolandTaylor @StefanoPalazzo @TheX (Lumped you in) et al You are all more than welcome to start a room to discuss this. I don't have a problem with that (and would be more than happy to join that room) I just don't want topics of potential controversy (aside from the current controversy about Unity and Natty) to be too prevalent in this room.

wait wait wait.... you just opened a can of worms!
Unity and Natty!

I don't need to need to start a room for that...

rages over unity's bad design
throws chairs

i think it was a joke conversation to begin with...

1:49 PM
bad design? What are you talking about!
:P

:D
sorry...
unity - evolved

Which is something we can all go head to head in this room because it's off-topic on-topic fun-insert-more-references-to-rainbows-and-unicorn-sauces-here

from Mac

beats @RolandTaylor with a wet noodle because I can't use natty

chases @TheX with a narwhal army because unity for the desktop sucks
k on a serious note - I won't start a room just so someone can tell me I'm an idiot for not believing an idiotic theory :)
but I will troll the chat about unity

1:52 PM
bites @RolandTaylor with a rabid warty warhog just because he can

@TheX you just wait! Puffy Pufferfish will pwn them all!

Hi

Hi @John, Welcome!

1:53 PM
@RolandTaylor that is fine... by the time that happens you will be long dead from the rabbies...

Thanks, I'm having a bit of a nightmare looking for a little help

What's up?

@John hi

I've installed nginx, when I try to apt-get install phpmyadmin it tries to instapp apache2
*install
I don't know how to get phpmyadmin to install without including apache2. I'm on 10.04

Ah, you might have to manually install it - which isn't that hard.

1:54 PM
@RolandTaylor so, sorry but it's a little harsh just to assert that I would insult you. I should think I'm pretty civil.

is apache2 a dependancy of php?

@StefanoPalazzo I tend to think the worst of people so I'm no disappointed later :)

I installed php5-fpm from the brianmercer repository

@TheX I think whoever packages phpMyAdmin has imporper dependancies

@MarcoCeppi ahh...

well that sucks! Strangely, another server I have 10.04 on I managed to install phpmyadmin without apache2

Yeah, it's a recommends package

Ubuntu needs more desktop applications written in php.
Brainfuck too.

@badp All my applications are written in PHP :P

You know, to be open and inclusive towards hackers in the respecitive languages!
@MarcoCeppi Are the GNOME bindings for PHP usable?

1:56 PM
@badp php maybe - numbskull no

@John phpmyadmin.net/home_page/index.php Would be where I start. IIRC ( I don't use phpMyAdmin anymore ) It's pretty straight forward to install

Q: Can i install my graphics drivers via the command prompt?

TheXsense I can't seem to open the 'additional drivers' program? and how do I know what driver I need to install?

@badp just need to write web integrated applications that use a window border

@badp Nope. I write mostly CLI tools

Well thanks for the help marco, I see apache or lighttpd or httpd are requited but no mention of the far more popular nginx

1:57 PM
@RolandTaylor That's cheating!

@John Yeah, What you can do is install it anyways - then remove apache after the installation
In nginx.conf all you need is:

@MarcoCeppi How about curses then? :P

I tried that, I'm not sure how to retain phpmyadmin, as it tries to remove it automatically with apache

location /phpmyadmin {
    alias /usr/share/phpmyadmin/;
}

...okay okay I'll piss off

1:59 PM
@badp lol but seriously, it should be done

@John Or whatever path you end up installing phpmyadmin to

php-gtk is a bit dumb if you ask me, but writing desktop applications in php is not - so long as they are written to use a web interface with a window border - kinda like prism etc

yeah, thanks
I'm inexperienced outside of package managers, lol

You might be able to mark it as "hold" so it won't be removed. I'm not sure why it keeps wanting to install Apache, et al. Lastly if you want you can just force an install of the package via .deb from the repo - only you won't get regular updates IIRC

Is there a deb file I would find, or would that have the same problems?
ah, you pre-empted me

2:00 PM
...lol, there really are gtk bindings for PHP :)
joke's on me I guess!

@badp Yeah, there are. It's an old project they're trying to update

kzh
I like the design of Unity on my netbook. Discuss.

@kzh Throws the internet at you!
I actually find it nice since the 10.10 release and look forward to Natty

@MarcoCeppi Well done, now we need a new one.

ducks from the flying internet

2:02 PM
@TheX answered :-)

Does anyone have a backup of the internet? Plz to email it to me.

@kzh calls a doctor for you

I'm super worrisome about how the integrated Whatever the top bar thing menu is called

doctor hears the question: the doctor is ill

@badp you already have one on your computer, to read it, type
cat /dev/urandom

2:02 PM
Not sure how well that will work for applications that don't adhear to it

I don't like it

@StefanoPalazzo wow, cool! I'll download it

I hated mac for it, and I'll hate unity for it

$ wget file:///dev/urandom
file:///dev/urandom: Unsupported scheme `file'.
:(

and now imagine having to provide support to windows users transitioning to ubuntu - I'll either have to switch them to GNOME after installation or sit for hours training their brains to avoid phone calls
@badp lol?

2:04 PM
@RolandTaylor meh, if you want to give Windows users a good transition go KDE

I know you are joking btw
@badp again... lol?

kzh
Throwing the internet at me won't matter. It's the internet, it doesn't [weigh anything] (youtube.com/watch?v=iDbyYGrswtg).

I like KDE but... KDE has some flaws

KDE is much closer to Windows, AFAIK.

Why do people post duplicate answers?

2:05 PM
@RolandTaylor Doesn't every DE have flaws?

which is a problem, actually

(never mind, I know why)

@StefanoPalazzo Probably to annoy you :P

@kzh WIN ^_^

2:05 PM
Yeah, well, you wanted a smooth transition :P

kzh
/me bows head in shame due to the markdown fail.

GNOME is a more radical change.

but it's not an insane change

@RolandTaylor Get them running on Ratpoison

kzh
I really like PekWM.

2:06 PM
the thing with KDE is that it's like going from vista to 7, a change, but not enough of a change to keep users guessing at least a little

@StefanoPalazzo I am getting an error message

and not having some kind of a challenge can be a problem

ratpoison is a tiling window manager for the X Window System primarily developed by Shawn Betts. Its user interface and much of its functionality are inspired by the GNU Screen terminal multiplexer. Its name reflects a major design goal of ratpoison: it lets the user manage windows without using the mouse. @TheX what is it?

when I try the jockey-text--list

2:07 PM
yes I know - *"your ideas are illogical"

I heard people who use Awesome love it -- until upstream changes the configuration file format, breaking compatibility every two months.

Well, thanks again for the help

@TheX I mean, what's the error message?

bye everyone

2:07 PM
Good luck @John

@TheX is that on natty?

oh it didn't get it all just a sec
@StefanoPalazzo pastebin.com/YbFsSHrs

(I'm sure these commands are correct, btw)

and yes natty

@TheX should be "xorg:nvidia_current" i think
not nvidia_current

2:09 PM
I am sure the commands are right too,. I think it is my system that is borked

did you modify your system after installation?

I did some updates

is it completely up to date? (the transition from python 2.6 to python 2.7 is just done)

U updated it this morning

what's your "python --version"?

2:11 PM
2.7.1+

I've no idea why jockey-text would import gtk...
you should go file a bug (if it's not already known)

did you ensure that you don't have any updates outstanding for today?

I will check again @RolandTaylor

you might have something outstanding since they uploaded the packages you installed before

2:16 PM
@StefanoPalazzo that link just makes my head explode.... cna you tell me what I should be looking for on there?

@TheX I'm searching it for you

oh okay :D

do you have a launchpad account and everything?

19 packages to be updates
@StefanoPalazzo yes, and I was able to remember my password

first you can enable apport by doing "gksu gedit /etc/default/apport", setting "enabled=1"

2:18 PM
@StefanoPalazzo okay it is going to be a moment I am updating my system :D

@TheX you might get errors when you don't do full updates :P
and remember to reload your sources after - just in case the nvidia package was missing before and is back

If you can still reproduce the crash after the update, and with apport enabled, it should give you an option to file a bug. This will make sure all of the relevant logs and configuration is included in your bug report

hey my errors went away

oh good :)

or at least the first one did

2:20 PM
^^

so I type in the enable command and nothing seems to happen

@Oli Damn, I thought Debian would have the same system as Ubuntu, wrt upstart. turns out Debian doesnt have a /etc/init/ :(

I'm going to be gone for an hour or so

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

2:23 PM
aw come on :P

let me restart... see if that make a difference

@TheX I don't think anything should happen, type "echo $?" right afterwards, if it doesn't echo "1" or "2", everything went well - restart your system and check if it's working

still no 3D support
:-(

2:43 PM
g'night guys.
