11:00 PM
It came from @MindWorX thinking that the "user experience" for the Android is somehow significantly different than that of the iOS

Yeah but Linux isn't a "Console App" and Ubuntu, Debian, and Gnome are distros of Linux. That's where my confusion is

Well, those distros have different UIs that are built on top of the core Linux kernel, just like OSX or the Android OS, no? (correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know a whole lot about Linux)

I honestly don't understand @MindWorX's logic myself but technically Android IS Linux and might actually be the only true comparison he made
You're correct on that part

From a practical point of view, there are no consoles any more.

@MindWorX's logic isn't so much "android is built on linux" or anything, it's that he feels that android has the same basic experience/feel to it as linux does.

11:05 PM
Well.. except for the Wii, I guess.
And actually, the GameBoy series and PSP.

@thedaian But even then, Linux has come a long way in the past 10-15 years (imo)

Everything has come a long way in the past 10-15 years. :)

Like, my Mom could even use Linux these days
maybe not my grandmother, but that's because she's blind
So back to the point: I don't think the Android's "user experience" is significantly different than that of iOS's. There is a reason Androids are taking over (or have they already?)

@JohnMcDonald The androids are taking over?!?!
Oh god, Sarah Conner tried to warn us... but we didn't listen!

Where's my Time Travel naked app?
2

11:13 PM
I'm not entirely sure I believe those numbers, but...

@JohnMcDonald I'm not sure enough people here speak French to understand what would otherwise be said as "Is it true?"

yeah, maybe not, but even without understanding the term (which is common enough in Canada at least), people can probably still catch the gist of it
It's in the same bucket as "Deja Vu?" or "à la carte" where I'm from

How about RSVP?

there you go

I've started greeting my co-workers in Luxembourgish. So far, I've only gotten weird looks.

11:20 PM
And yet they got "entrée" so incorrect. :)

lol, I know right?

(At least in the US)

Apparently it's correct down south (way down south: Australia)

Yes, it's used correctly here in Australia.

Hors D'Oeuvres is also pretty common, state-side

11:22 PM
I don't know how us english-speaking north americans got it so wrong

We used to have meals with more courses...

yup, there's a bunch of borrowed words and phrases from the French in the English language

Good ol' Guillaume...
(Or "William, if you prefer)

Also, in the US you've messed up the numbering of floors in buildings, up to (but not including) the thirteenth floor. :)

hah, is that done everywhere in the US? It's done in some buildings here in Canada, but not all
There's a 13th floor in my building

11:30 PM
Interesting.
But you still call the ground floor the first floor. Which is clearly wrong-headed. :)

It really depends on the building, per the 13th floor thing

heh, yeah, my building has a "main floor", then the one above that is the 2nd floor (aka the +15), then the 3rd floor is also known as the +30

and ground floor/first floor probably also depends on things, though yeah usually the floor above the "main entry floor" is the 2nd

Interesting. The +15? What's the logic behind that?

+15ft above ground, and it's where all of the "+15 building connectors" are

11:33 PM
That's awesome, I like that!

yeah, it's nice during the winter, and on rainy days

So when they tell you that there's been 25 feet of snow, you know which level to go to in order to leave the building. Very convenient! :)

exactly

"Microsoft’s Windows Mobile faced a decrement in its market share from 5.8% to 5.7%." Is that correct usage of "decrement"? Seems weird.

Hmm, does sound weird, but Google Definitions says it's alright: "Noun: A reduction or diminution.", so I guess it's all good
I guess we always think of '--' eh?

11:42 PM
Mm. Or its general usage as a verb. Seems weird to use it as a noun.
That basically makes it a complete synonym for "decrease", doesn't it?

hmm, I can't think of a case where I'd use "decrement" that couldn't be replaced with "decrease" really, and I'm not familiar enough with the term to say the opposite is true.
I've gtg, ttyl!

Mind. blown. Just learned that in vim, the registers you can yank text to and from are the same registers where macros are saved to and run from. So you can, for example, yank text from a file and then execute it as vim commands.
No clue how this would ever help me. But.. might lower a vimgolf score or something. ;)
