thoughts on RAM choice?
Jon
Jon
if you built a pc out of all quality parts
you are gonna have a pc that will ast you a good 8 years
The problem is when you realize your CPU is the bottleneck and have to buy a new mobo to go with it... then you just decide fuck it and build a brand new PC
Jon
Jon
solid -- thats my opinion anyways
i always buy a mobo that is like 200$
leaves room for upgrades, and typically is of higher quality which allows for over clocking and will just last longer
Pip
Pip
easier for me to update whenever I have the money since I'm still in school. I never have the huge amount of money needed to build a nice one but always have a little bit
Jon
Jon
50$ motherboards are typically shit
21:01
I figure if I buy parts that are made to withstand overclocking it will withstand standard use for a long time
@Pip I can relate. $700 every few years is easier than $2000 up front
Jon
Jon
anyways, never cheap out on a motherboard, or a power supply
then never cheap out on graphics card if you are into gaming
But what about SSD?
:P
Jon
Jon
then the CPU, you can try to buy the best performance vs price for the time you are building.
Can't cheap out on mobo, psu, gpu, or SSD so
Jon
Jon
yah, a good PC costs money :)
Pip
Pip
21:02
@Jon the one that's in the list fits that pretty well
Jon
Jon
i like to have one good PC
Pip
Pip
I have a nice laptop and want to build a decent desktop
Jon
Jon
yeah.. my desktop is a server in my house basically
Pip
Pip
I might be able to hold out for some free parts from my dad since he never built his desktop
speaking of, I'm going to check out what he has
brb
Howdy
21:12
@SpartanDonut I personally wouldn't bother with an SSD if you're short on money.
@Jon you got an ssd?
I agree. That's the cut to make
But some here are really really REALLY passionate about ssds
so I had to say it
aha
I can understand why tbh, but I don't miss them when I'm without. It depends what you're doing I guess.
Looking to discuss restrictive vs. non-restrictive for which and that with @Anko...
Mid range mobo, best GPU you can get, 16GB DDR3 RAM, at least a decent CPU
21:13
Yeah the performance gain for SSD is worth the money but isn't necessary if you don't have the money
@OMGtechy do some heavy IO stuff like use chrome or open programs and you will miss the ssd
@ErikE I'm here :)
@AttackingHobo well apparently not
@ErikE Repasting comment for reference: I assume you mean my edit here. Could you cite a source? The Oxford English Dictionary disagrees, though I'm probably just being pedantic. (We should probably talk in chat actually.)
I'm not saying I don't like having one, but I don't miss them either.
I miss a powerful GPU more than anything.
@SpartanDonut plus you can always get one later, whilst with the mobo you're stuck with it
21:15
Yep
well, you could replace the mobo but who the hell does that
I do lol
even when you're not upgrading the CPU? :P
I have only ever changed the mobo when I've changed the CPU
21:16
@OMGtechy that's what I thought. Then I was short on money so I waited a year to get it. I regret every cpu cycle that was wasted while waiting for I/O
@AttackingHobo different strokes
If SSDs were cheaper per GB I'd say they were a no brainer, but I tend to have a lot of data so 1TB + drives are a must for me
@OMGtechy sure HDD for storage 100%. But for OS and most used software SSD is a must
Jon
Jon
@AttackingHobo NOPE
21:18
But then Windows starts using it up like a bitch and I get pissed off
Jon
Jon
when i built my pc, SSD still had high failure rates
I recently (last week) moved Windows OFF the SSD for that reason
Also, I have deleted my off-topic comment, feel free to delete yours
@Jon Before you go about building a new comp. Get an SSD. It will feel like an entirely new PC.
I have my OS on SSD, but not much else. I don't see how Visual Studio benefits from SSD. :P
21:18
@Jon it's not so bad anymore, but yeah it was really bad at first
@William'MindWorX'Mariager 0_0 Build times man...
Jon
Jon
Yeah I will be getting an SSD drive at some point..
Still need to buy a Rift and a Mac
@ErikE Wow, one learns something every day. Thank you!
@Jon wait for CV1
21:19
If I had built this PC part for part I would have just got 2 HDDs and RAID'd them
Jon
Jon
@AttackingHobo thats the plan
I've yet to make a project large enough to actually take time to build. VS is pretty efficient at background compiling or whatever the feature does. :P
Unless you're using C++. In which case you're doomed xD
Jon
Jon
papa johns has a 50% off promo if you order online
deal.
Jon
Jon
21:20
i just ordered a 15 inch pizza and 12inch garlic finger for 15$
@William'MindWorX'Mariager I get randomly inspired by stuff, being able to have my editor up in 2 seconds rather than 20 is amazing for me
I've never had it start up slow.
Boot up took about 3-4 seconds. :P
Jon
Jon
@AttackingHobo when I got my 2d world to boot up and generate on the fly in 3 seconds that was when I was happy
i'd originally have to wait like 1 - 2 minutes for stuff to pre-gen
I did notice a different having Windows on the SSD, but the drawbacks weren't worth it.
@ErikE Reminds me of "Nobody. Understands. Punctuation.". :)
21:22
@Jon You must be peanut butter because I'm jelly.
@Anko Clearly I used to be on your side. :)
"With a HDD, you have to wait for the PC. With an SSD the PC has to wait for you." -me
Jon
Jon
@SpartanDonut are you hitting on me?
4
Always
lol
Jon
Jon
hahah, first time i noticed
enchanté
So I made it to the Platinum level in club nintendo this year
21:25
@Jon any good rewards?
Jon
Jon
i'll find out in july
last year's rewards were not great
@Jon prize this year is a Mac Pro
Jon
Jon
there is a refurb mac pro on for 999$ at apple store
CeX sell super old ones cheap aha
@OMGtechy Drawbacks?
Jon
Jon
21:27
almost 200$ off the regular
Can't you just use an air or a mini?
Jon
Jon
i'm looking for a dev mac box
@William'MindWorX'Mariager trying to tell Windows not to use the C drive for all its crap is not fun. Even with 120GB SSD, it's not enough.
@Anko Reminds me of The Chaos!
I don't like seeing my disk space low on a system drive
21:28
Ah
Yeah, I have a 250 for that exact reason.
@Anko I did enjoy that article--thanks!
120 is just too small.
@William'MindWorX'Mariager I used to have it on a 60GB one
I managed somehow ahahaha
I've got a 500GB SSD and it's over half full and it barely has any games on it
OS and dev tools
I think 256GB is the turning point for me
21:28
If you want fast boot times without SSD, just get an UEFI compatible motherboard.
It's crazy how much that affects boot times.
I do have one.
I don't mind long boot times, so long as once it's booted I can do stuff nicely.
Jon
Jon
soon computers will have 64GB of ram
When games are 50GB+ it's hard to manage that space sometimes
@SpartanDonut shadow of mordor 37 GB D:
Titanfall 60GB
21:30
@Jon my old one had 32GB, at work we have 256GB on some aha
And until recently I also had the Titanfall beta installed on there xD
I want that much on my home PC.
Jon
Jon
Picross Touch 15MB
@SpartanDonut whut
@Jon 15TB
My next PC upgrade will likely be a 1TB SSD
Or a second 500GB at least
21:31
RAID SSD
:O
Need moar jiggabytes >:D
ahaha jiggabytes
@OMGtechy I built a Raid-0 SSD system for a company with dual 730 series 240gb drives. Over 1GB/s write speed.
Pip
Pip
huh.... I couldn't find the components
@ErikE Oh English. :D
21:33
@AttackingHobo :D :D :D
I thought the video looked old... and then it said 24 drives made 6TB of data xD
Pip
Pip
I'll just ask my dad when he gets home from work
hey @OMGtechy :D
I guess thats 250 GB a piece
meh whatever :D
@Pip seeing you reminds me of Python package management
@SpartanDonut yepp, it's still awesome
Pip
Pip
@OMGtechy pip?
lol
21:34
Yes
@OMGtechy yeah. Really fun build too
I do think SSDs will take over sometime in the near future though
It'll come down to price I'm sure of it.
Pip
Pip
probably
once they're a bit cheaper they'll probs become the default for most things
If I could buy a 1TB SSD at a similar price to a 2TB HDD I'd say it's a no brainer.
Pip
Pip
definitely
21:39
time to go work on ma language :D
Pip
Pip
:D
@Pip how's sci fair?
Pip
Pip
awesome
done yet?
Pip
Pip
just have to fiddle with some settings and I'll be done :D
21:39
ooo I wanna see it :D
Pip
Pip
Its not interesting at all.. just output to files and stuff
I'll make the repo public after science fair presentations on the 14th
open source it :P
Ninja'd
lol
Pip
Pip
lol
...?
I told him to open source it moments after he said he was going to make his repo public at some point
when someone beats you to saying the same thing it's fairly common to call that ninja-ing or something like that...
21:44
Yeah, I didn't see you being ninja'd, so I thought you were saying you ninja'd someone. :P
The ninja was clearly so ninja noone saw him.
that must be it
TIL what ninja'd means from daddy donut.
I have no idea what you just said.
:P
Not hip enough for my internet speech son?
MLM
MLM
21:49
ninja'd as in Halo when you jump back over the player and assassinate/melee?
I had to look up with "TIL" meant, not a reddit frequenter :/
I am outright not a redditer
MLM
MLM
lol, I should of said that ^. Only look at links others send to me
TIL has been a thing since well before reddit existed. Mainly from Digg, according to the google results I'm getting.
@MLM same
Most Digg users moved to reddit, so it's kind of a reddit thing, but it's used in many places other than reddit
MLM
MLM
21:51
Yeah, but I didn't digg either. I was too young when that was popular
I learned about it on Imgur, which admittedly is where all image posts from Reddit are hosted.
wtf is Digg
imgur was made by a redditor explicitly for reddit, actually, then it kind of grew into more than that
ninja'd to me means stealing -- old days of WoW when anyone would take whatever out of a chest if they didn't need it lol
i diggit because i reddit. you gettit ?
21:52
@Dave such skill
so amaze
Digg was cool until they changed their layout and submission routine, then everyone migrated to reddit it seems
such excite
this doge is getting out of hand
21:53
can never have too much doge
wasn't just digg's layout that changed. they had issues with their visibility algorithms, advertisements, and a shitload of censorship and corruption.
@IcyDefiance yeah it was all sorts of bad
@Anko I do like that poem, but I can't figure out how parquet rhymes with khaki...
not all poems rhyme :P
reddit is starting to get the censorship and corruption thing too, actually. it's pissed me off a few times. but most of it is just with subreddit mods, not the reddit admins, so people just move to different subreddits and things get better.
21:54
corruption? What is this the mafia?
@Dave That one rhymes specifically so that the reader can figure out what the heck is the right way to pronounce everything.
ahh
maybe its a troll poem
@OMGtechy things like all tesla related posts being removed in /r/technology for reasons that have yet to be explained. or /r/worldnews removing all posts related to snowden. no one knows whether the mods are being paid/threatened into it, but whether they are or not it's pretty fucked.
that sounds horrible
and I thought SO was bad.
but anyone can make a subreddit and there are always much better alternatives for people who actually care. it's only annoying because /r/technology was a default subscription for new members and I think /r/worldnews still is, so they're very popular and have a lot of influence.
21:58
# What do people think of this?
for number in (0, 5]
    # will go through 0 -> 4

for number in (0, 5)
    # will go through 0 -> 5
MLM
MLM
@OMGtechy Isn't that the opposite of Math syntax. [0-3] = 0, 1, 2, 3

A: What does this square bracket and parenthesis bracket notation mean [first1,last1)?

Michael MrozekA bracket means that end of the range is inclusive -- it includes the element listed. A parenthesis means that end is exclusive and doesn't contain the listed element. So for [first1, last1), the range starts with first1 (and includes it), but ends just before last1. Assuming integers: (0, 5) ...

Oh, did I get it backwards?
