generally you adjust it based on what your game actually needs, and based on the complexity of what you're doing. most games not only don't need an AI decision 60 times a second, the AI algorithms are too demanding to run in 1/60th of a second alongside everything else, potentially because other stuff is more important in the computational budget. some games don't need a physics calculation for every single frame, others demand it.

12:43 AM
Yeah; I guess at that point you need to know what you're doing hehe
not the simple 1 frame physics -> 1 frame graphics :P
(rinse and repeat)

Q: Is the tag [techniques] useful?

Alexandre VaillancourtYes, we have a tag techniques. It has no tag description and no tag usage and it is used on a very broad range of topics (as broad as 15 questions can be). Is it a meta-tag that can be used for everything and anything and should be removed/blacklisted, or should we fix it?

@AlexandreVaillancourt :D

I got out and bought the necessary for tomorrow..

3:31 AM
@Almo I signed up for igGameCenter. hit me up if you ever see me up there!
gotta play me some linkage

1 hour later…
4:38 AM
@DukeZhou sure!

@Curio cause you edited your local html I dunno

Hi!
@UriPopov yes, LOL
@ShaunWild don't worry :)

8:30 AM
@AlexandreVaillancourt isn`t this is a rep?

I think that the reputation of meta is the reputation of the current section

Q: Which game engine is the most accessible for the visually impaired?

Ryan RardinI am legally blind, but I would love to get into making video games. Which game creation engine is the most accessible for people like me who are visually impaired? It needs to work well with screen magnification and/or reading software such as NVDA or Windows Magnifier.For art assets, I can col...

I feel bad about this one
I don't want to close it because I'd be an ass

Which modules should I learn to code Simon Tatham's games in python and C ?
Also, similar questoin, but for physics simulations, like this: falstad.com/mathphysics.html

user92578
Python and C? As in you're looking for game frameworks for those languages?

I mean I asked this question: stackoverflow.com/questions/44733829/… And the comments suggested this room.

user92578
9:15 AM
So I myself have used PyGame with Python and SDL with C++, but SDL's a C library so that should be fine anyways

user92578
Those handle the graphics for you, which then leaves you with the mechanics.

user92578
Depending on the physics, you could write your own basic simulations or just something like Box2D which surely has Python bindings available.

I wan't to (relatively) do it from scratch.

user92578
Which part? Graphics? Physics? All of it?

You can't really do that with python
And you'll have a hard time with C too

9:19 AM
@Tyyppi_77 cool

user92578
Commit count isn't a very good measure of anything since occasionally I do neat small commits and occasionally I just dump four days of work into bitbucket in one commit

@Tyyppi_77 Physics portion.

user92578
Aight, so then you just write your own physics

@AlexKChen What do you want out of it?
Just squares colliding, maybe circles, or polygons?

Did you check the two links ?

9:22 AM
I can't from my phone

user92578
Those physics simulations don't seem terribly complicated

Can you screenshot it maybe"
?

user92578
It's your everyday java applets that the teacher shows in physics class

user92578
"look here we can adjust the joint strength multiplier"

Oh, thabks
Our teacher never showed us everything though, we don't live in an "advanced" country, like Finnland

9:25 AM
Is learning tkinter and <graphics.h> enough, for python and for c ?

But I know what you're talking abouz

user92578
I don't see why you would use ancient libraries like that when there are better and easier alternatives available

@AlexKChen why are you looking at 2 languages at once?

user92578
since I feel like the amount of UI you'll need is not very much I feel like you'd be better off working in a graphics library instead of an UI library

(There are some secret reasons :P )
@Tyyppi_77 So gimme some names

does someone of you guys have an example of hunker movement animation?
i can not imagine it and hence can not draw )з

user92578
wtf is hunker movement

o_0

first definition applies to my issue
i want the player make to move in such position
if not "hunker movement" what do you call it?

user92578

user92578
You mean something like this?

10:00 AM
yep. it is it thanks a lot for the help
where did you get it?

user92578
google

user92578
I feel like your site question might get closed.

so you call it crouch, but not hunker
do you mean that it should be closed due to your answer here?

user92578
no but because it's essentially a list question, with most answers equally valid

anyway I has an answer already

10:04 AM
Can you tell me what mobile you have? I need to know the resolution

user92578
me?

@Curio mine is GSmart Rey R3

the people in the chat
thanks

user92578
I have an XCover 3

user92578
I don't see why you wouldn't just google for common smartphone resolutions

10:06 AM
I want to take two samples

LG F6

thanks

Zerk idea about the resolution

zerk?

user92578
Why do you want to take samples? What if we happen to have smartphones with unusually small screens?

10:08 AM
@Tyyppi_77 does your phone waterproof?

user92578
I think it's waterproof, haven't tested though

@Tyyppi_77 cool

Zero
I mistyped

@Tyyppi_77 no, it's for the game

You want to know the resolutions you need to look out for?
It's usually abive 480*640, and either 4:3, 16:9 or 16;10
4:3 is pretty much just the ipad

10:11 AM
ExtendViewport is different based on the resolution
So I have to calibrate it
Tyyppi's mobile is particular
1,779 : 1

That's 16:9
@Curio

Not exactly

It's never exact

Usually yes, for example yours and Yaroslav's
The fraction is 16/9

My monitor for example is 21:9, but the resolution is 2560*1024
Ok, then it's not always exact

10:21 AM
yes

But you usually classify them by "rounding" to the nearest

I don't know if consider it like 16:9 or not

It wants to be 16:9

They are very similiar...maybe I'll do it

Also
1280*768 was the old 16:9 iirc
you can't make it 16:9 exactly, unless one of the sides is a multiple of 144

10:25 AM
Till now I added 5 resolutions: 3:2, 16:9, 4:3, 1.8:1, 5:3

10:50 AM
mmm it's strange: I can't consider 1,779 : 1 as 16:9

user92578
why is that?

user92578
the difference is minimal

I don't know, but the views are busted if I consider them as in a 16:9 device

user92578
1.779*9=16.011

It's more similiar to 5:3 o_0 why!?

11:10 AM
@Yaroslav The rep of the meta site is the same as the main side

12:37 PM
Guys ^^^ Substance painter 2 on steam -34% and bundle (Bitmap2Material 3, Substance Designer 6, Substance Painter 2) -50%
It's the indie license tho
"We authorize the use of the Indie version of Substance Painter 2 to any indie / company generating less than US$100K a year in revenue (based on prior fiscal year). "

Thanks for the heads-up. :)

Awesome!

thanks for the random ping

pings are actually a really good source of random.

4:11 PM
I wanted to ask you a thing: but are the instruments tools free in Raper?

4:31 PM
@Curio i think that word is not the word you meant for the name of whatever software you were referring to

4:44 PM
One of the p went where it wasn't supposed to.

Remember guys don't put your p in strange places.

Sorry men I did a big mistake...

@Charanor good rule to live by

@Curio 1.779:1 is definitely 16:9. It should be just fine to approximate it as such.

Ar, I don't remember the name :(
@Charanor I had to create another "layout"

4:54 PM
@Curio And an ExtendViewport is a viewport that keeps the aspect ratio but extends the viewport to also fill the screen. So if you use a 16:9 ExtendViewport on a 16:10 monitor it will fill vertically since the screen is slightly taller than 16:9.
Guys how can I make myself forgive C# for its horrible naming conventions so that I can start using it without getting a headache?
PascalCase just looks so ugly to me when not used for classes :(

5:45 PM
Steam keeps asking me for my password :(
All because I got my steam account installed on 4 user accounts, 2 machines:
Laptop: Linux (gaming sandbox account)
Laptop: Linux (my dev user, for Substance Painter)
Laptop: Windows 7 (for windows-only games and tools)
GPD Win: Win 10 (hand-held machine)

And Steam is all like OMG UR ACCOUNT GOT HAXORED! CONFERM UR POSSWERD!!
I can't wait to get a Steam machine for the living room and have it ask for my password absolutely every time...

Q: Objects appear invisible to camera during animation

@AlexandreVaillancourt, hm. It is interesting. Even though the reputation in meta Game Dev is the same as in ordinary Game Dev the badges are different. (з

@Yaroslav Yep!

7:22 PM
holy fuck
The Witness has 3-4 options for keyboard moving
none of them are shaped like what I need, so this is going to be really annoying
man
I am honestly tempted to refund it

is Diablo 3 is free? if no, is Diablo 2 for free?

neither
I'm not aware of Blizzard making any of their old games free.
except maybe WoW, but that's only to level 20

7:39 PM
it is a pitty )з

7:54 PM
oh right cool, that's a good game

8:04 PM
Been messing around in Substance Painter.

:D
some other people are pretty mad about the witness controls... they have DVORAK keyboards.
so wasd is all over the place

I'm still figuring out how to do non-realistic texturing in that software to match my game's art style.

I'm either gonna have to spend time creating my own materials in Substance Designer or run the textures through a filter in gimp but that means not having a WYSIWYG live preview.

sounds like fun man

It's amazing for doing quick realistic stuff.
Started from this basic beveled cube.

DH.
Yeah, I know an artist and he loves it

8:18 PM
It's a bit overkill for what I'm doing and I have to fight the realism but it beats editing the maps in gimp
Small one is how big it's gonna be on screen :P
for example, all I really needed it for is to color the glowing wood.

8:33 PM
would somebody like to play naruto ninpou through Tangle?
it is really an amazing game
in my opinion it is a lot better than dota2
since 2 in comarison with naruto ninpou feels booring
you should spend all your time trying to upgrade skills and level and so on
while in naruto ninpou you basically do the same, but everything is much brighter and faster
there are even three teams instead of two

9:07 PM
by the way, guy, does anyone of you played in Jade Dynasty? I did not ever play a game better than this one. there is everything in it

user92578
9:34 PM
@Almo This seems like such a weird oversight, like seriously, key remapping is so simple to implement...

@Yaroslav Jade Dynasty looks pretty awesome. (Wish I had time to play such games!)
How are the hand-to-hand combat mechanics?

@Almo in my engine I've encoded key events for letters & numbers as ROW:INDEX according to keyboard scan codes so instead of 'W' it's ROW1:2 for this exact reason.
ROW0 is the top row (digits), then ROW1 is the one under, down to ROW3.
Only issue is the backslash key that depends on the keyboard. I can't remember how I encoded it.

And I still have to add a reverse lookup: I can't print "Press the " + WhatIsKey(ROW1:2) + " key to move forward"
I don't think users will like "ROW1:2" as the descriptor for that key HAHAHA

9:59 PM
If anyone has free to play combinatorial games online, let me know and I will add them to the links section at deterministicgames.com
just added iggamecenter, where you can try Almo's Linkage

10:30 PM
@DukeZhou
you here?

10:48 PM
@Almo I'm up. (I'm using a pseudonym "Spenny Gurgis" right now since I assume my stats are going to be 0 wins / infinity losses for a while;)

ah ok :)

Even Conway admits he's not a great player, but I want to try to maintain some dignity

hahaha

PS- how did you arrive at 12?
I've been looking at graph coloring games recently
4 color theorem and such

24 pieces, on average Fewer connects two together each time he moves, 12

10:52 PM
plus, I figure the other players will appreciate a "fearless" opponent who will play anything, lose repeatedly, and keep coming back for more

I'm like that even on a "main" account
:D

PS- I've been thinking about Cognizer a little bit. Have you ever thought about "inverting" the game to make it easy instead of hard? (It's a good underlying mechanic, but for me the fun/pain ratio is almost entirely on the pain side.)

hahah

Like I pitched a similar tweak to a friend who was doing a Candy Crush clone--can swipe based on color OR shape

It's deliberately impossible because mobile game sessions must be short
I may put a way to get extra lives into the Steam version
@DukeZhou want to play the next linkage game?

11:05 PM
for me one of the difficulties is it's hard to create a mnemonic device to remember what to touch and what to avoid. looking off the gameboard is suboptimal
absolutely

just hit the sit down button in teh game
most people who play cognizer vocalize the rules as they play
I do
"red, no circle. red, no circle. red, no circle."
but there is a reason the level doesn't start until you tell it to; gives you time to set up in your mind whatever way you're going to remember them.
I play mostly Speed/Expert, which has a 6-second timelimit.
it's quite brutal

very brutal

:D
I tune the Expert versions of my games to be difficult for me

what I'm sort of getting at is that "dumb, mindless" like candy crush, but it doesn't have to be so mindless

:D

11:09 PM
like jamming though chains based on color or shape, and both when applicable
racking up chain bonuses
ridiculously high scores
just keep hitting those reward centers in the players brain
while also helping their pattern logic skills and reflexes

11:28 PM
Man, a single bitcoin is 2500 dollars
When did it go that high?

irrational exuberance
(may also have to do with the rulings that Fantasy Sports is actually gambling, thought I haven't been following that too closely)

Same way a single NES classic mini is $600 :P

lol

good night to all
@DukeZhou did you ever play Jade Dynasty?
I have Titan 137 reborn on the official server

I did not, but a kung fu MMORPG is like crack for me

11:34 PM
spend most my childhood playing it

if I went near it, I'd lose at least a year

@DukeZhou oh!
@DukeZhou if you did not try it it must be hard for you to imagine what it feels like
@DukeZhou are you a student or you have a job already?

a perennial student of everything I'm not a teacher of

I'm actually about to launch an entirely new game

11:37 PM
does someone know why is there only link to stack exchange, but not game dev exchange?
@DukeZhou what is it?

It's actually a small set of novel mechanics that turns any empty Sudoku into sequential, non-chance, perfect information, territory control strategy game

it is unusual to see game dev with such degree: degree in Ancient Greek Language and Literature (x

less rules than Chess, and only takes abut 10 min to play, but similar emergent complexity

@DukeZhou got it. it seems like pretty pure math in game. i am not a fan of such things

but the mechanics [M] are actually for a set of games
you'd be surprised at how non-mathy it actually is
It was originally going to be released with pictures instead of numbers (like an 8 is a castle, a 7 is a town, ect.)
but when testing the mechanics for 3 years, I found that people were interested in the integer based game as well

11:41 PM
@DukeZhou omg: Set Theory, Number Theory, Complexity Theory, Game Theory (and all of its extensions), Quantum Theory (as related to determinacy), Topology, and Systems and Information Architecture.
@DukeZhou if it is not a secret, how old are you?

It's all related to the project
I actually only started studying that stuff when I cracked the mechanic back in '13
I was born in '70

@DukeZhou it seems like everyone around is a cool game dev, but not me. those who younger and those who older
@DukeZhou did you have a game dev job?

No. I came up in "boring" utility software.
WinINSTALL and backup utilities

@DukeZhou hm... for me it does not seem that boring (з

(I was good at making the technology seem exciting, and became a product manager)
Veritas, where I worked, was a pioneer in bit-level incrementation for big data compression
it was very interesting stuff, and the founders were inspiring
I learned a lot from being in the culture of "useful people making useful things"

11:45 PM
@DukeZhou you mean Unifersity staff?
@DukeZhou do you mean university staff?

nope. old school engineers who believed in creating useful things
very different from what much of Silicon Valley culture has become

@DukeZhou got it
@DukeZhou does it bad from you perspective?

They also took care of their people--very generous with the stock options

@DukeZhou I am going to bed since it is 3am here. good night!

Yeah. Most of Silicon Valley atm seems based on creating the appearance of value in order to scam someone into acquiring the tech
definitely.
I look forward to continuing our conversation.

11:48 PM
@DukeZhou (x
@DukeZhou there are some positive sides as well. for example its existence inspires youngsters throughout the world
@DukeZhou I mean the existence of Silicon Valley

@Yaroslav absolutely!
Software engineers are the people who can create something out of nothing
All goes back to Leibniz i suspect
"creatio ex nihilo"

@DukeZhou interesting description

In my case it means we can create a product that half a billion people might play, with next to no overhead (overhead in the sense of expenses)
@Yaroslav so you like the boardgame Risk?
[M] has been described as "Risk without dice"
(i hate randomness in strategy games--no need for it when one has complexity as a tool)

@DukeZhou actually I never played it. here is the first time I hear about it
@DukeZhou but I am googling already. wait a moment
@DukeZhou I know a game which is a bit alike and which I like more. wait a moment I will show you it
