12:00 AM
@AlexandreVaillancourt <- @JoshPetrie Does that sound like a good idea?
^ just came back across this great image and felt like sharing it

@doppelgreener You should see the UI of the software we make!
Actually, no, you shouldn't, you'd be sad :(
I am sad :(

Hmm... how does one do the fancy link-thingy to another post on this website like doppelgreener did above? :P

12:16 AM
You just post the url
(without the brackets and parenthesis)
But the Meta GDSE will post your question here anyway within one hour :)

Tried that, didn't seem to work! Perhaps I have to post the url without any message attached? Testing below...

Q: Should we remove dead links that can't be replaced?

CharanorWhile going around trying to help purge the engine tag I found this question that includes two dead links to some source code. I was going to remove those links but I hesitated because I was unsure if we should remove dead links (that, in this case, can't be replaced). I also couldn't find anythi...

Bingo haha

Any reason why unity randomly freezes? (win 10 64 bit with VS for scripts)

12:41 AM
@Charanor I must admit that I improve your edits so that they get applied faster :P
So that we can be done with that tonight!
(You're doing great :)

@AlexandreVaillancourt Much appreciated haha! I've been sitting with this for several hours now (it's 3 am) and I feel like my edits are really lacking... but I just want to see that number drop to 0!
Pretty sure I just edited the last unedited question as well... Just 5 left to be accepted / improved now then we're done!
I sense a disturbance in the force...

@Charanor Yeah my finger slipped on the <kbd>Enter</kbd> key
Thanks, non-consistent markdown!

Oh markdown... will you ever bring us <s>strike-through</s> in comments?

We have to use <strike>s</strike> strike now?
Guess not xD
0!!!!!!!

12:55 AM
@Charanor it's 3 dashes before, and 3 after: ---stuff---

So... what now? Celebrate? Post on meta? Call the local news department?

@Charanor Aye! Good job!
The tag is now down. Good job everyone!
4

I'm going to make a record of this minor event incredible achievement then go to bed. Thanks for the help with the tag everyone and for finally making me reach 1400 measly rep ;)
2

@Charanor I thought you stopped getting rep from edits at 1k, but it's not the case apparently!

Well I'm not complaining since I just hit #10 in quarter rep as well which (fun fact) was my 3-year goal when I joined Gamedev and that I have now reached in just over 1 year! :)

1:07 AM
Nice nice :)
My goal is to de-throne Byte56 as the second editor of all time ;P
Before the end of this year.
I'm sure @doppelgreener is aiming for that spot too. :P

Speaking of de-throning... Where can we find rankings? I can only find rankings of reputation, not total edits or anything else.

The user's tab; there are 5 sub-tabs: rep, new user, voters, editors, moderators

Cool! You're really close, just 48 more and you're in the lead!

Yup!
There is always a question that needs an edit around the corner :P

You can start by looking through my posts, some of them are screaming for edits I would imagine ;) /shame
(shameless self plug)

1:20 AM
Hehe :) Well there is a lot to do with the meta post already opened, and I have a couple more to ask there (about tags).

Speaking of meta, hopefully we get MathJax here on Gamedev. I'll be keeping a very close eye on what's to come.
But now it's time to go to bed. See you all tomorrow!

I guess we'll see a load of questions edited by Bàlint and doppelgreener :P
Good night!

2:00 AM
@AlexandreVaillancourt what do you think about making games from scratch using OPENGL only?

@edcharlie I think it's a challenging way to learn OpenGL, and a bad way to make games :)
@JoshPetrie I'll edit the pong tag tomorrow ;)

6 hours later…
8:09 AM
@AlexandreVaillancourt I'm not a very competitive person, I just really like editing :)
@AlexandreVaillancourt 2k or 500 edits, whichever comes first

1 hour later…
9:35 AM
Morning!

Afternoon

@doppelgreener Ah, ok, so you can edit your whole way though 1k then, but no further..!
@ShaunWild Isn't it like 10:30 in the UK or something?

So
It's afternoon somewhere

Ah, sure :)
"I never drink beer before noon" "well it's only 10 AM?" "It's past noon somewhere!"

Ye that's one of my favourites
I think it's "It's 5pm somewhere" or something like that though

9:42 AM
Yeah, depends who you ask I guess!

Are you from Canada?
Or was that someone else

Are there wolves and moose everywhere

There are wolves and moose everywhere can't get to work without being bullied by a pack or a heard. Wanting to get your lunch money and date your girlfriend.
j/k
There are, but not around where I live; haven't seen any of these in my life (except in zoos and such).
I've seen plenty of deers, though..
And I've seen a bear once.

The UK is so boring for dangerous wildlife
Our biggest and most dangerous is a badger

9:54 AM
Yeah, you guys living on a giant island, wild beasts had nowhere to escape... The had to go underwater, like the famous monster...

You mean Lionel Messi?
The giant lake monster?

The Loch Ness Monster, or Nessie, is an aquatic being which reputedly inhabits Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It is similar to other supposed lake monsters in Scotland and elsewhere, and is often described as being large in size, with a long neck and one or more humps protruding from the water. Popular interest and belief in the creature has varied since it was brought to worldwide attention in 1933. Evidence of its existence is anecdotal, with a few disputed photographs and sonar readings. The creature commonly appears in Western media where it manifests in a variety of ways. The scientific...
@doppelgreener That too :P

Lionel Messi

@AlexandreVaillancourt :)

10:02 AM
@ShaunWild That's a soccer player, isn't it?

No it's a monster in a lake in SCotland
In lake Lionel

Never heard of it :)

Mostly found on green oval-shaped grassy lakes

10:28 AM
Rectangular

I'm confused; do golfers throw balls at it?

10:51 AM
Hi ;D

Get back to bed you

@ShaunWild who?

you

It's 1 pm :P

10:58 AM
that's normal sleeping time for me on weekends

Didn't we have to do something?

Make a game?

yes

I have a problem
I get really motivated while I'm at work to make a game
And as soon as I get home I lose all interest in making it and become really lethargic.

:(
I was so happy, but if you can't, don't worry

11:28 AM
I'll see how I feel tonight
I guess we can start on something
I feel like before we start though I'd wanna go onto a VOIP channel somewhere and give you a run through of some core game engine mechanics

Fine :)
How much time do you stay at work?

I finish in 4 hours
Download skype for your computer so we can VOIP
I'm not text chatting

VOIP? What is it?

Voice over internet protocol
Just voice chat

I think that chatting is better

11:42 AM
Not really when I'm trying to explain how to implement a game engine...

If we chat I can understand better

Right, but I still need to broadcast my screen to you

And how can we do this?

SKYPE

So, you can see my screen and I yours

11:47 AM
No you see my screen..
I'm basically going to give you a demonstration
Or a lecture

Ah ok
Thanks

12:21 PM
@ShaunWild are you sure that skype is safe? I read that someone received some malawares downloading it from the main site

12:35 PM
@Curio if your source is "someone wrote that someone received malware from it", that's not all that reliable. we also don't really know what went on there: did they really download skype, or did they just think they were downloading skype? did they really download it from the official site, or did they just think they did? did they really get the malware from skype and/or the site, or did they just think it came from there? was it really malware, and was that really the cause of it?
i wouldn't be surprised if someone saw skype's in-app banner ads (which are, i cannot say this strongly enough, the worst idea they have ever done in their long and storied history of awful, terrible, bad, no-good ideas) and concluded it was malware, and/or their virus protection sent up a false positive, and/or their virus protection sent up a warning and it was unrelated to skype but they decided it was related.

Well, I'm always careful when I download something, but in my opinion the official site is always safe

Well, since it's a microsoft product, it's probably a malware :P

Are you ironic?

@AlexandreVaillancourt ... nice

Yes, I'm joking.

12:37 PM
Fine

i laffed

Actually, windows 10 is a giant spyware, but that's about it.

Skype is a Microsoft product ye...
Definitely has malware, but I'm sure it won't affect you too much

D:

There's a Skype Preview app in the Windows Store, which is a major upgrade over the POS that is the regular desktop Skype

12:40 PM
Windows Firewall blocked some functionalities of Skype in all public and private nets

You can skype from within outlook.com from what I recall, not sure how it goes for video chat though..
You can download it on your mobile phone if you think it's going to be more secure :)

On mobile is a bit uncomfortable

Just download it on PC you wimp
Or I'm gonna get REAL MAD

@ShaunWild I'm not sure you should use that term, flaggers around...

Wimp is 100% fine, someone said derogative words towards disabled peple yesterday and got away with it

12:43 PM
@ShaunWild No, the did not :)
they*

you're talking about DH?

No he said the f*** and the s*** word

Ah I thought he said something else.

i'll be honestly surprised if anyone validates a flag on that message

12:45 PM
wimp is not an offensive word
It just means someone who lacks courage

Beh...

even out of context i'd take it in good humour

@ShaunWild You could have said it in other words... :P

But wimp was "other words" hahaha

...

12:52 PM
don't worry

I didn't like your behavior very much

okay

@Curio this chat has a wonderful ignore feature if you want to =p

I don't want this

Good choice

12:57 PM
You can try and flag it too.

Probably not worth while
as @doppelgreener said, ""

I use ignore for people I find annoying flag for people that do flag-worthy things

I only think that he could have been calmer, but by now doesn't matter

I wasn't actually angry
I was just joking

Text isn't the greatest at conveying sarcasm/jokes

1:03 PM
Then fine :)

inhales boi

I agree, if you write you can't send your tone of voice

Maybe that's why we have italics and bold
Download skype or I'm gonna get REAL MAD
does that look sarcastic

I have done it yet

That sentence contradicted itself lol
"I have" implies you have, "done it yet" implies you should have said "I haven't" at the start, now I'm confused

1:06 PM
I mean that I have installed it
Maybe I used baddly "yet"

Yes, don't say "yet", "yet" implies you are going to do it in the future

What word do I have to use to say that I have done an action?

"I have done it"
Is fine

I have already done it
already?

Yep, but that's a bit robotic
That makes sense, but in English we generally try and say things as shorthand as possible
You could say
Already done
done
it's installed
etc

1:09 PM
Maybe you do lol I would say "I've already done it"

ok
thanks

Okay, in the UK then
Or the north of England, we say everything short hand
gonna pop to shops for a 'puter

user92578
1:43 PM
Aren't all the cool kids using Discord nowadays anyways given how terrible Skype is?

@Tyyppi_77 yep, for everything but video calls. and i hear discord is actually working on implementing those, so skype's days are numbered.

user92578
Ah right video calls, forgot about that missing feature.

voice calls in discord are even better than skype voice calls

Yeah, they're very clear.

& they have a voice channel structure over a voice call structure, which works really well, and still support formal calls between contacts
the other day i was unable to facilitate a skype group call over mobile 'net but discord was crystal clear without dropouts

2:14 PM
@doppelgreener Do you know which message just got me timed out??

2:29 PM
@ShaunWild the "synonym of cat" one, though i'm surprised it did

That's pathetic, I'm sorry, but that really is

yes
i don't think it was warranted

Are these flag approvals completley out of context?

but the message was fairly borderline
22 hours ago, by doppelgreener
they see messages out of context but can visit the transcript to see context if they feel it's necessary
Speaking of which, I was doing some reading around and investigating about stack chat tolerances for swearing and other stuff, to try to gauge what was supposed to be appropriate on principle.

Give us an overview?
What can we actually say?

2:32 PM
Sure. Typing it up now.
Acutally i need to brb. give me a few mins

No problem

user4704
@AlexandreVaillancourt gamedev.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/2406/… I've merged programming with software engineering now that engine has been taken care of.

user4704
There's about 500 or so "programming" questions that probably need review based on the new usage guidelines.

@JoshPetrie Cool! I think I'll tackle the engine-like tags first, though!

ok, back

2:47 PM
Should I add to that list or create a new question?

user4704
I'd start a new question since you already got answers

Yeah, thought so!

user4704
in theory, in case somebody who answered the first one would have objected (although I doubt that's the case)

user4704
That's probably a better plan, though; removing and blacklisting those looks like a less daunting body of work than dealing with old programming ones.

Yeah, "I agree with the 4 others, but not with the new one"..

2:48 PM
General overview: Stack Chat is a bit more relaxed than main site. It still represents main site, and is expected to remain professional. "Professional" means a lot of things though. Swear words aren't prohibited in practice, but they're still technically disallowed, and using them makes a message far more risky that it might get removed as rude/inappropriate/offensive, so it's still a good idea to avoid using them.

Could you not argue "synonym of cat" is actively trying to avoid using them?

Also, the p-word is definitely over the line, and suggesting you'd call someone that is not all that great. (it's just about the same as just calling them that outright. it still could make someone feel just as uncomfortable.)
in hindsight i should've done some clean-up on that conversation and deleted that message specifically already.

@JoshPetrie Is data oriented architecture better than OOP in your view? I'm struggling with knowing what data is used to have things happen with our current architecture, and I'm wondering if turning it into a data oriented would help relieve that and/or create more headaches...

user4704
No.

user4704
2:58 PM
I don't think one or the other is "better" on their own merits; they both have a place (sometimes together), and it depends on the scenario.

Ok, thanks :)

3:24 PM
The synonym of cat which Shaun was talking about, was puma or panter, don't worry!

@Curio That's a wild one!

Yes but they are cats

No, they're feline, but I see your point :)

At the end of the day, no one was offended, just someone decided to flag it "because"

4:25 PM
@ShaunWild there are lots of people with your name in Skype, who are you?

4:37 PM
yo can you guys subscribe to the newsletter on my site I need to test if that shit works

done

4:57 PM
nice seems to work
thanks

user92578
5:13 PM
site needs an icon

ah fuck yeah
how do I do that :D
sec i will google it

1 hour later…
6:25 PM
hi all! how is it going? (з
I got 100 point from 100 in Algebra today
cool
I took C++/OOP for the next year as a selective subject
do you think, guys, that being a student in Applied Math is a lot worse than being a student in Software Engineering?
if you are going to become a game developer I mean
when I entered the university I did not know the programming at all, I knew only math, so I was intimidated by going to Software Engineering

@Yaroslav The kind of job you'll get will differ
I think math people are more involved in hard-core graphics programming.

@Yaroslav compliments!
What is your faculty?

6:45 PM
My faculty is Applied Math
I had a lot of calculus, algebra, discrete math and Java in first year.
And those on Software Engineering had a lot of directly computer related courses
how much time will I have to sped in order to be able something nice in game industry? our game dev lecturer says that you should spend 10k hours in order to do some nice work in game dev
I hope to be interested in game dev for my whole life. do you guys, those who are learning game dev for a long time, have your passion to making games decreased?

@Yaroslav The passion for game dev does not decrease, but the passion to work as a game dev can decrease, depending on what job you get.
Mainly depending on the studio.

hmm interesting. that means you should strive for getting the job you want
is it that hard to change studio if you do not like it?
I try pixel art for the second day and still can do nothing satisfying )з
not can, but can not

Not exactly; you can get the job you think you want at the studio you think you want, then realize it's not as glam as you thought it would be, then decide to change studio, and job, and find yourself at a very decent place :)

ok so i've been a lead programmer for a year. A recruiter asks if i want a 9 month senior programmer contract, that might become permanent.
moron needs to do his fucking job properly

@Almo I do not get who is moron from you point of view

6:54 PM
@Yaroslav It depends on where you live or how you're ready to move; if you live in a small town where there is only one game dev studio, you'll likely have to move if you want to quit.
@Almo That's going to be flagged..

do you actually think a lead programmer would take a position that's not even permanent, and is not management?

@Almo what is the difference between lead programmer and senior?

He can see I'm at a well-established studio in montreal already
lead is management
senior is high-level coder, not managing

so, should you be a senior at first and team lead afterwards?

not necessarily

6:55 PM
hm
got it

you can get to lead without going through senior
it's probably unlikely
but it's a different skill set

There are bad programmers who become team leads and producer, to the heart's content of the rest of the dev team :)

do you know, guys, some places where I could get a freelancer Unity dev job?

the senior programmer i've been working with is really good, been at the company over 12 years, and would never even consider doing lead work.
he wants to code. I want to help people code.

@Almo it sound very interesting (з

6:57 PM
@Yaroslav There have to be websites with this kind of thing; places people put up dev contracts.

Does the lead programmer program? Or has only to give orders?

depends on the company and the lead
at ubi I knew both types
on my previous project I did very little coding. But I expect I will do some on the next.
