God damn Facebook. Damn it straight to hell. I didn't post anything or like anything or read anything there for over six months. Then an atrocity is committed, and several people on my "friends" list say things so appalling that I have to unfriend them, and suddenly I'm posting again.
After the crew of the Enterprise successfully intervenes the assassins' plans and saves the future of human-Klingon-peace in 1991's Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, there is a little prologue where they say farwell to Sulu and the Excelsior. After wondering about what to do next Uhura rece...
For what it's worth, nothing you do on most of these topics, short of becoming part of the topic (IE performing terrorist acts) will make a difference. Since no sane person wants to do that, we're left with talking.
[Scene: A gunman holds a man at gunpoint] Gunman: TELL ME OR I'LL SHOOT! WAS GWYNETH PALTROW'S HEAD IN THE BOX?! Man: Let me just pull up Stack Exchange.
@randal'thor We're not blabbering about real world atrocities and patting ourselves on the back. We're reading questions and finding the answers. It's probably rare for an SE answer to make a significant impact in peoples' lives, but we don't pretend otherwise.
@Axelrod Volunteer donate enlist campaign etc etc etc.
@CapyStenchbeast Your volunteer hours mean nothing in that topic. Your donations invariable end up partially in the hands of the bad guys. Your enlistment will amount to you being a mercenary for American corporations and your campaign starts online, so the online argument is part of it.
To the question of whether you should run from a pack of dogs that may be aggressive, the answer is an unqualified NO!. As to what you should do, the answer is a bit more complicated. In the vast majority of cases, dogs won't attack you without provocation. As always, assume the best but prepa...
@Axelrod Volunteering? Wrong.Nonsense. Even I'm not that cynical. Enlisting? I agree, but many people feel otherwise. Donations? Wrong. Donate to the right place. Campaigning? FB campaigns are literally worse than useless the vast majority of the time.

@Axelrod My point is, if you just post crap on social media, you feel like you're helping when you're really doing nothing.
@Axelrod Donate to reputable charities involved in improving living conditions in developing countries and to organizations that help the victims. You can't stop it all, but you can help clean up the mess, and make some places less fertile recruiting grounds.
Doing nothing at all is better than doing nothing but posting on facebook, because when you do nothing at all, you don't feel like you're part of the solution. You know you're not doing jack.
@CapyStenchbeast Well, I meant real-world atrocities and what can be done about them. Facebook may also be a subject on which people have strong feelings, but (barring Sayre's Law) not as strong.
@randal'thor Again, I don't think anyone would argue that putting an opaque Tricolor over their profile picture = making a significant difference. Even people who have done it.
"According to former ISIS hostage, French journalist Nicolas Hénin: "ISIS fighters are 'a bit pathetic,' 'street kids drunk on ideology and power' -- 'more stupid than evil.'
They're glued to social media and will be fascinated with the response to the Paris attacks, especially evidence of xenophobic reprisals against moderate Muslims: 'They will be heartened by every sign of overreaction, of division, of fear, of racism, of xenophobia; they will be drawn to any examples of ugliness on social media.'"
They hate the pictures of Germans welcoming refugees. They're convinced that Muslims cannot peacefully co-exist with their neighbors in western societies. More than anything else, they want to convince other Muslims of this. They chose France as a soft target where racist politicians are already doing well, where it will be easy to provoke reprisals."
Anonymous could fix most of it, via infection of their communication network and exposure of sites.
But we have the government that let the Boston Bombers stay and didn't watch them after being warned by two different countries of their exact plans.
And clearly they're not planning to do anything strategically sound, like hitting their recruitment schools (which are open and allow journalists to enter)
@Axelrod That might help in Europe, but not where most of ISIS/ISIL's victims live. All they need is ammo and weapons, and they can run roughshod over much of the Middle East and Africa.
Sure. But I prefer a civilized discussion about something meaningful over 5-friggin'-000 stupid dog pictures. (Even if I personally have no interest in both right now.) ;-P
My memory is so foggy on this but i remember watching it at a very young age. I feel like this scene is early on in the film but i'm not 100% sure on that.
What i do remember is a small cottage with a stream near it and a water wheel. a swan is floating gently in the stream then gets sucked into...
@CapyStenchbeast Did you know him personally, though? I've always wondered if he was a nice guy. I mean, he had to be at least decent since Elton John is his friend but still.
Fortunately, they're big/robust enough to survive the impacts. If they hit the window hard enough to kill themselves, they'd break the glass before they broke themselves.
Most Game Shows are filmed with live audiences. A popular and long running example is Family Feud, another is Who wants to be A millionaire, and a recent one is The Chase. Some of these shows embrace the live bit when the host or contestant mess up, so they include the blooper in the episode. All...
@CapyStenchbeast Can we tone that down to at least a 1:1 ratio of text messages and image messages? I know images are a great and informative way of communication and can further the conveyance of ideas to a great deal, but I'm not entirely sure what spamming a whole 10 similar (and moving!) images in a row adds so much to any discussion...
...I'm also not sure where that newly found penchant comes from, since I haven't seen you take it to such extreme levels in other rooms either yet, but it is a trend that becomes apparent. Though, I'm certainly only speaking as a slightly concerned user and not as an official moderator/room owner, yet.
I have always had a basic subscription to Comcast without HBO and was able to use HBO GO. I remember being told that's the way it works... you just need a basic subscription in order to use HBO GO. Now I moved and they are telling me I need to pay for HBO in order to use HBO GO. I can't find a...
@MovieReel I feel like this needs to be either closed or retagged, but I can't find a suitable tag OR a suitable closure reason. Thoughts, @NapoleonWilson?
@steelerfan Yep.
Oddly enough, the feature I miss most being low rep again is access to vote counts.
I decided to answer the question and create a tag. Hope that isn't a problem.
Man of Steel
Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I
Iron Man 2
Captain America: The First Avenger
That took some work. I knew Man of Steel immediately, and I knew the last one was some kind of Captain America movie, but I had to dig to figure out the rest.
@Praxis - @randal'thor decided to ignore his vow when he realized that @Richard was capping without even posting, and when I reiterated my position of not giving a damn about rep.
It's an old trailer I had watched , so no much details to give, but will be appreciate if someone could help me out with this. It's like crime-comedy movie.
It's an old movie, probably a 90's movie, where 2-3 people try to rob a pub a with full of city gangsters and they hijack it eventually, the ...
@CapyStenchbeast OMG!!! Seriously?? !!! Sorry, it took me so long to reply, I had to go into the bathroom because I was laughing so hard and it is too quiet up here!! LOL!!!
@CapyStenchbeast I seriously had to go onto another screen because I cannot stop laughing!! OMG!!! Tears rolling down the face now!!
My stomach cannot take this anymore. It is still sore from lastnight!!!
I remember the original Terminator futuristic battle scenes as being more realistic from what I recently found on YouTube. I seem to remember long sweeping laser beams that were practically silent, more like real laser beams than what we see in mainstream media today, but the scene I linked to h...
