12:00 AM
NOOOOOOO

@CapyStenchbeast Nice Darth

Christopher Kimball is leaving America's Test Kitchen!

Uh...ok...

That's crushing news if you watch America's Test Kitchen.

12:01 AM
@CapyStenchbeast Oh, gosh darn it
@CapyStenchbeast Dodged a bullet, then :P
Don't think I even glimpsed it
@NapoleonWilson I saw, adorable. Isn't that big one the one that eats birds?

@Walt It's amazing. They use the scientific method to perfect recipes.

@CapyStenchbeast Interesting. I did watch Kitchen Chemistry
@CapyStenchbeast So it's official, we finally ran out of natural resources

If we were to crack open an asteroid and find a precious material, you can bet your life we'll be mining in space in no time.
Things only take a lot of time when they don't make money.

@Walt Or we want to be in on the mad scramble for space resources if/when it becomes feasible to do so. And that's when the xenomorphs will kill us all.

12:14 AM
The hell? Kitchen Chemistry only has 6 votes on IMDb. I thought it was pretty cool

\@Walt Because diamonds are actually super common. Well, maybe if there were star sapphires and such.
Oh! And I said materials!

@Axelrod Whatever is in those asteroids, we should pick at it with a stick when it comes oozing out, like the movies taught us, instead of alerting anyone

@Walt And whatever you do, don't run out of the way of a falling object.

@Axelrod Well, unless it's a giant spaceship. Then you can run away, but only in a straight line.

@Walt But all this is moot compared to the extreme requirement that you remove your helmet as soon as you enter an alien ship.

12:29 AM
@Axelrod Good tips all. I hope NASA's paying attention
Just make one movie where this happens and the astronaut's face instantly burns clean off, Hollywood. That's all I'm asking

"The atmosphere is made of molecular acid!"

Also, if we're sending mining teams to an asteroid, try to train astornauts to do that instead ot the other way around this time. Those morons almost got us all killed.
Anyway, my planet needs me (to "stop chatting already and do the dishes like I asked"). I have to go now
Seeya fellas

Later, @walt

12:45 AM
BREAKING NEWS: My partial hiatus from Facebook was put on hiatus today so I could unfriend a bunch of people for showing their true colors in posts about the Paris attacks.
"Something awful happened! I guess that means I can be a horrible human being now!"

Some things just bring out the worst in people. IE I didn't know a friend in college was super anti-Jew until the (then-) latest rounds of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict began.

what's the practice here for citing experts?

Anonymous
vs just giving one's own opinion

Anonymous
i mean, what is expected of answers

@Tyco "It's much better"?

12:49 AM
Good question. I have an answer: None. I have seen so many opinion-based answers getting the win.

Anonymous
okay thanks

TRY to cite if you can.

@Tyco "Primarily opinion based" answers are to be avoided whenever possible.

Anonymous
well, i'm more wondering if i can or should expect good answers here

@Tyco You should expect them, and show preference towards them.

Anonymous
12:51 AM
in practice, does this site have enough experts such that voting reflects the accuracy of the answers?

It really depends on the type of movie or show.
There are some shows where people practically devote their lives to it, and some where almost no one has heard of it.

If someone's answer doesn't use references and citations, I would recommend you either:
1. Abstain from voting and/or accepting it
2. Downvote and/or leave a comment suggesting the OP adds references and citations.
I do both.
@Tyco I don't know what a "movie and television expert" is.

Anonymous
haha. well, for certain questions... maybe about cinema history, an expert might be somebody who has a masters in film studies and wrote a thesis on the particular era being asked about

@Tyco You'll only see a person's credentials by checking their profile, and only if they mention their credentials in their profile.

Anonymous
i wouldn't expect to get that info from profiles. i was wondering if you generally see voting patterns as if this site has those kinds of experts

Anonymous
12:55 AM
but i guess i can look around myself :)

@Tyco As SE sites go, this one is pretty small, so there are fewer of everything. But the few people I have gotten to know here seem to be buffs. Judge the users by the quality of their posts.

@CapyStenchbeast What? You've got to be kidding me... That's not possible.

@CapyStenchbeast That's like saying Alton Brown isn't doing... well... anything on Food Network.

1:00 AM
What's he doing instead?

@Catija No idea.

We actually have a meta topic for "professionals" to introduce themselves... somewhere.

@Tyco It largely depends on the question, too. While citing reputable sources is never a bad idea, an answer that does not do so but is primarily reasoning about a more or less subvjective intepretation, but does so by reasonable argumentation based on the movie itself, isn't a bad thing either. Just always favour the why over the what.

@Tyco - @NapoleonWilson and @Catija are much better suited to answer your question than I am;

16
Q: Are there any professional actors, producers, directors in here?

phwdI think it would be great to identify the users who take part in movies professionally and may be able to provide great insight to how this site should work. If possible could you list your details in an answer below? For example Name - optional Occupation - actors/producers/directors/stag...

1:01 AM
@Catija I was just about to post that.
Hey @rand

@CapyStenchbeast There's a big difference between opinion-based and fact based answers from someone who works in the industry.

Evening @CapyStenchbeast and @All!
Someone in interim-Mos didn't know Thaddeus was a professional:
in Mos Eisley Cantina, 9 mins ago, by Lord Voldemort
@Thaddeus Have you been published?

...And neither are questions that inquire to some degree subjective interpretation necessarily a bad thing, as long as they encourage reasonably explained and reasoned answers that favour the why over the what. Downright discounting answer because they're neither from professionals nor citing ones is not a good approach on the matter either. But as said, it also largely depends on the question itself.

@Catija I agree. That's why I added "whenever possible". Some questions demand opinion, and some opinions are more valid than others.

In fact, there's a question with an answer with like 20 upvotes and the answer is uncited and utterly wrong... and it's pissing me off but every time I edit my answer (with citations), the accepted answer gets more upvotes.

1:03 AM
@randal'thor I now know where your name comes from (because I wanted to see a picture of that bitchin' master replicas heron mark sword).

@CapyStenchbeast Not that everyone's actually answered it if they fit the bill... hmmm...

@CapyStenchbeast Entirely depends on the question and the answer itself, though. But to each his own.

@Axelrod Good. I like to spread awareness of WoT wherever I go :-)
(see a picture of what??)

@randal'thor google.com/…

@Tyco If you think an answer misses reasonable citations for its claims, feel free to ask for it in a comment, though.

1:05 AM
@randal'thor I was aware of the series because the first few books took up most of a shelf in my dad's book shelf back in the day.

@Catija I never knew heron-mark swords existed in real life!

They also did highly inaccurate replicas of Drizzt's scimitars.

@Tyco Yeah... that doesn't exist here, that I know of... but I took a class on Bollywood during my film studies so... that's covered.

@Axelrod There's 14 honking great books now :-)

But their heron mark sword always looked so great. I just really, really didn't want to read that series.

1:07 AM
@randal'thor Can someone make money from it, and is it possible to make? If so, it exists.

@Axelrod Why not? :-(
@CapyStenchbeast You're so cynical.

@randal'thor Because it was so long and so focused on things I didn't care about that I gave up.
Like the Lord of the Rings if you didn't know anything came after the first two books of Fellowship.

@randal'thor But it's true... that's why there are replica Harry Potter everything... And Star Wars everything... and Star Trek everything.

Jesus Christ, man, why are you describing the weave of Gandalf's robe?
I might go for it now. I just couldn't then.

@Axelrod Does it matter other than keeping track of whether it's white or grey or brown?

1:09 AM
@Catija WoT is nowhere near as big a fandom as any of those though.
It's never been adapted in film or TV either (unless you count that awful pilot episode that we don't mention).

@Catija That's what I said. But there it was.

@randal'thor Doesn't take many fans to warrant replica swords, though... they're not widely made.

And never could be satisfactorily.
Sorry if that's sacrilege on this site.

@randal'thor Blasphemy!
Make it an HBO series and put the writer in charge umm experts in charge wait...
You're right.

There are so many pointless tags in this room that they almost block out the starboard :-/

1:12 AM
After all the crap Christopher Tolkien "found" after his dad died, I wouldn't trust anyone but the author either.

@Axelrod If anyone ever tries to turn WoT into a film or TV series, I will boycott it.

@randal'thor Well, you'll have to complain at @AnkitSharma He handles all of that.

It couldn't possibly do justice to the books. Sorry.

Good day, sirs, I'm off.

Bye @Axelrod!

1:21 AM
@CapyStenchbeast OMG... So cute:
@Axelrod Bye!

@Catija All those kittens remind me of Dolores Umbridge.

@Catija GRRRR WOWF WOOF WOWF!!! GRRRRRR! ROOWWF!! ROWR!

@randal'thor These aren't nearly as sickeningly cute as Umbridge's cat stuff.
So, they do scottie dogs too....

@Catija sniff sniff sniiiiiiiiff

@CapyStenchbeast I won't ask where you're sniffing ;-)

Q: 3 movie titles needed

Civis Luther The first is a stoner comedy when film makers are making an awful action movie with the title "Freedom Fighter!!!!!!!!!!". @CapyStenchbeast Watching my boyfriend on ESPN right now. You know the one you think looks like a potato head ;)

@steelerfan Hehehe.
@steelerfan I just transferred all the pictures that make you laugh to my laptop. You have been warned.

1:40 AM
@CapyStenchbeast Oh God. I have people over here right now too.

@CapyStenchbeast You have to show my sister the Husky!

@CapyStenchbeast she seriously had to go to the bathroom!!! My brother in law is giving us the evil eye for laughing so hard during the game:))

1:49 AM
I wish you could see us right now. My sister is literally on the floor!!! We can't stop laughing. OMG My brother in law is getting so pissed at us :))

Actually most of those are pretty good ^
I can't compete with @Capy for funny pics. I should probably just give up :-)

Funniest Highland cattle I've ever seen:

1:55 AM
OK, I am leaving now before my brother in law kills both of us :) My sister had to run to the bathroom again btw. She can't laugh anymore with out a bathroom break since she is pregnant :))

@steelerfan Aww, you're no fun anymore.

@CapyStenchbeast My brother in law told me to tell you that you're on his list ;))

@CapyStenchbeast OMG!!! She is still in the bathroom laughing!!

1:57 AM
@CapyStenchbeast The dog knows that girl is no good.

This is Steelerfan's brother in law. My wife is in the bathroom in complete hysterics. I haven't seen her laugh like this in a long time.

2:00 AM

@steelerfan She must have needed a laugh... They're funny but I don't think they're that funny.

I am ready to take this device from these girls so I can watch the game.

@Catija Mine are funnier than @Capy's! </kindergarten>

@NapoleonWilson will be furious when he finds we've spammed his room with funny dog pics...

My brother in law stole my i-pad from me!!!!

@steelerfan ROFL!!

2:04 AM
OK, I am leaving so we can watch the game. It's time to get serious people!!! ;)) Later :)

And I'm off to bed. Night all!

night @randal'thor

@randal'thor Later days.

2:21 AM

So...this is where the party's at? ;-)
How are you @CapyStenchbeast ?

PRAXIS!
I'm fine.
I done messed up, and I'm cool with being where I am for a few more days.
How have you been?

@CapyStenchbest : Things are fine with me. Trying to keep order and control over at...the other site. :-)
@CapyStenchbest : I wouldn't worry too much. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say you are missed. :-)
Looks like I just missed @randal'thor

@Praxis Thanks. I'm actually not worried. The message I got from the mods said this was a "first step", and there might be more, but that doesn't seem to be happening, so I'm just doing my time.

@CapyStenchbeast : Has @Richard been around here? (I know he's been active on M&TV main site, but in chat? Just curious.)

2:36 AM
He's been lurking, but neither of us can chat with our main accounts, and he hasn't brought buffybot's account in for whatever reason

@CapyStenchbeast : Ah, okay.
@CapyStenchbeast : Well bud, I was just checking in to say hi. Have a good night! :-)

Q: Does anyone know who this is and what movie this is?

Jacob Garcia I was watching a video on youtube and I took a screenshot of this because I thought the movie looked interesting, but I took it right after the title of the screen went away and I didn't notice it until weeks later. 4:49 AM
@MovieReel The title is historically and linguistically inaccurate. If you go somewhere, and there are already people living there, you didn't "discover" a damned thing.
Also, you can't say you were the first European to "discover" a continent when Vikings lived there hundreds of years earlier.

Q: Support France, Suggest Some French Music

Donald.McLeanThere isn't really a lot that this community can do to show solidarity with or support for the people of France in this dark hour. However, we can listen to their music, and support their artists. So if there's a particular song or group that you like, post some information about it in an answer.

^ I can only think french horror in out context

@AnkitSharma What a waste of time. I heard about this yesterday, and it's still a dumb idea.

@DrRDizzle yeah.......leave it alone
Even its not that old to be remade for current generation

Q: What Is The Record For Siblings In A Film?

Daniel StowersI was wondering if there's a movie that can beat Scrooged (1988) in terms of sibling actors starring in it - it starred Bill Murray, Brian Doyle-Murray, Joel Murray and John Murray.

10:37 AM
Yeah, I guess I magically know why chat takes like 10 seconds to fully load.

> Blame @CapyStenchbeast

@AnkitSharma How about we simply just go on with our lives and solidarize with any countries we like in private?

@NapoleonWilson that was never suppose to be a serious consideration either.

@randal'thor This isn't my room, it's ours.

@NapoleonWilson Just joking (in a somewhat Richardy way) ;-)
Yay, fewer tags! Thanks @AnkitSharma
@AnkitSharma Nobody does that any more now he's not a mod.

So who is new target then, except CMs :D

Wad Cheber maybe? :-P
Or some other mod ...
Wait ... you're a mod!

Yeah but we don't blame mods in here

Anyone who blames you gets suspended? :-P
There must be a third M&TV mod. I've only met you and Napoleon though; does the last one not hang out in chat?

I didn't suspended anyone yet
@randal'thor He is bit less active this days but he do come sometime

12:20 PM
@AnkitSharma Oh yes, I have heard of him.

But he is one of the old gods.

The pro-tems?

Yeah

How common is it for pro-tems to get re-elected?
I think only one of the SFF pro-tems was ever an elected mod too.

12:33 PM
@randal'thor In our case out of 3, 2 didn't even tried
@randal'thor On anime.se out of 3, 2 got elected back. So pro temp have good success rate

@AnkitSharma You got a lot of candidates there!

I might have not even tried if we had all three pro temp back in election but two of them left us due to personal reason way before elections.
One did came back during election but as a supportive user rather then candidate

@AnkitSharma So iandotkelly was holding the fort on his own for a while?
That's impressive

@randal'thor That's why he got the full love. Me and Napoleon gave him, so much pings/flags during that time when we had only him.
SE put the re-election on hold till graduation and it took quite a long time
So he was sole survivor

Poor guy. It must be hell to moderate a whole site alone.
You would've thought the higher-ups could've elected someone else to join him. The pro-tem mods have been reshuffled a few times on e.g. PPCG and Parenting.

12:44 PM
@randal'thor And on Hindusim.se and still they have very less active mods

OK, gotta go. Nice chatting @AnkitSharma; see you later!

Q: A design update is coming!

Stéphane MartinMost of the changes won’t be visible; these tweaks go along with recent updates that were made to Stack Overflow: We are moving the site's CSS to a newly refactored LESS system, so that it's easier for us to fix SE network CSS bugs globally and launch new features in the future. Q: How did they make the shimmering colours when Mork calls Orson?

PsychonautAt the end of every episode of Mork & Mindy, the alien visitor Mork calls his boss Orson to give a report. The show depicts the call by having Mork chant, "Mork calling Orson. @MovieReel How is it even a big deal
@NapoleonWilson do you know musicfan allowed IDs.

@AnkitSharma I think so, yeah. But I wasn't there for a long time. I think they also allow recommendation of the form "music/bands similar to...".

in Off the record, 5 mins ago, by Donald.McLean
When the site first started there was a group of active people who were all vocally anti-ID questions. Then most of them left, became less active, etc. Then new people came along who felt differently and they voted to reverse the policy. It wasn't the mods choice, it was the community's choice.
I just noticed today
in Off the record, 4 mins ago, by Donald.McLean
We did impose the "sufficient objective detail" standard though, so the kind of ID questions that really drive the ID haters crazy can get closed.

2:10 PM
@AnkitSharma What do you mean "too bright"? It's completely black!
@AnkitSharma It's nice they get the new profile finally, but seeing how tremendously some other sites changed, and that the SciFi style is pretty unique, I'm not sure they'll all be that glad about the actual changes. Though, the meta post sounds as if really not so much will change.
For example if you take Skeptics, they changed extremely, it's a whole different design. And although Seasoned Advice shows that a bit of a custom background is still possible, they also lost some of their unique imagery.

2:27 PM
@NapoleonWilson Too dark i mean
Most SE are just plain grey version of original
@NapoleonWilson Don't know there original design either.

Well, the whole color scheming of Skeptics changed (and I can only hope for them that the HNQ ads were updated, too). They had a black/yellow based color scheme, now its light blue, and some of the imagery got lost. That site must be one of the biggest changes in the new CSS overhaul. But well, as long as their users like it, I don't care about either of the two design (even though the yellow one looked quite interesting with its site background).

I didn't like how android.se got changed completely

Ahhhhh got it, now they are quite tone downed

@AnkitSharma Well, the actual design wasn't as extreme and eye-jumping as this one, though. They already adapted it shortly after, I think.

Ohhh

Look at the HNQ ad in your answer on Meta Stack Exchange to get an idea of the old design.

It doesn't exists at that location anymore

Compared to the new one.

2:42 PM

@AnkitSharma I was talking about the old ad in my question.

Ohhhh
Old one was good
Android HNQ is still old
THere are new in the list, i think
Want to see there library but they didn't made the folder public
Oops they graduated long ago, maybe i missed it or they didn't made into HNQ much
Great this is what we got in HNQ

I think there was a list, druing the recent "Oh god, we missed to create HNQ ads for all the sites that graduated in the last X months" wakeup, that listed the sites that got forgotten. I think it was 6 or so, including us and Chemnistry. I don't know, though, if the rest of them have gotten theirs yet, like Biology, SalesForce or ExpressionEngine.
But it's also not that easy to check due to the inconsistent naming.

Yeah
@NapoleonWilson Seems like all three don't have it

2:59 PM
I'm still so glad that we kept seriously bugging them so much, the HNQ ad we finally got is really great. But maybe the other sites don't really care that much to inquire the state of their ads (or they already did so). Or maybe we're just sensitized due to the Community Promotion Ad and swag issues. (Or we're simply too pedantic about this stuff.)

I think major of them don't care
Yeah i do love our final HNQ ad
On the side note, no love for beauty pageant :/ -2 on meta

@Catija Is this question on-topic here? I know they won't take it over at SE.History because I asked over there a while ago about historical movies.
@Catija The first time the Bengals lose all season and I can't heckle Richard about it :( They are no longer undefeated :))

@steelerfan he can see the pings. You can tease him ;)

@Catija Seriously, she only saw the picture of the husky. She was still only laughing about that. My sister and I have this inside joke between us about people being surprised and the looks on their face. That is why I always find that picture hilarious. I knew that she would too. Also, she has been moody with this pregnancy, she needed a good laugh. We were complete idiots lastnight :)
@AnkitSharma Well, it looks like he has been lurking. I am pretty sure he has seen it already. I was going to go over in SF&F chat and post their win over there as well. Just to pour salt on the wound ;)

@steelerfan I think it's a dumb question... It's a movie... and it's a narrative... and it's really a bad movie... so I don't think that anyone would ever think any of it is true... but that's what happens when stupid history teachers present crappy movies when they don't want to teach.

Uhuh.
@Catija If it's so historically incorrect, you might want to provide those insights as an answer, though.

4:16 PM
@NapoleonWilson I said it was a bad movie... I tend to not believe bad movies. I haven't actually seen it, so I can't say for sure if it's true... but narratives don't tend to be based in fact.

@Catija yeah, my sister is a history teacher. She is constantly complaining about historical inaccuracies in films and how students believe everything they see in films.

@steelerfan Maybe she's heard of this one and can answer the question :P

@Catija I have not seen the movie.
@Catija Ha! After last night, I think she needs to stay away from here ;)

@Catija "I said it was a bad movie [...] I haven't actually seen it" - Oh.

@Catija I showed her some stuff over in SE History, and she just got frustrated.

4:20 PM
@steelerfan Considering what you've said, I'm not surprised.

@Catija :)

@NapoleonWilson I was basing it on the reviews on IMDb and the fact that it tanked in theaters when it originally came out in 1992... and had some big names starring in it that should have drawn viewers.

I hadn't even heard about it at all. Didn't Ridley Scott's version get released around the same time (which is a natural release year for that stuff, of course)? I guess the winner was clear then, similar to Robin Hood (though, I think the Partick Bergin version is even considered more faithful in that case).

So, the question is on topic?

It might be a bit (if not too) broad, but other than that is , I guess.

Well, it probably would help if I actually saw the movie.
@AnkitSharma Hehehe. Losers! ;)

That being said I lately feel the site is going quite down the tubes, Richard should be able to gather quite some food for another of his "Movies:SE sucks" rants when he's back chatting next week. We need some great movie, too few good Spectre questions. Last year we had Interstellar and the year before that we still had an amazingly active site.

@NapoleonWilson Well, I wish I knew what movies to post questions about. Any suggestions besides Spectre?

@steelerfan I don't know. The movies you just watched and liked and have interesting questions about, I guess. Or young adult scifi stuff for that matter.
@steelerfan And why haven't you watched Spectre yet?! ;-(

A: Why do old movies sound like old movies?

Daniel StowersOne of the biggest differences between older films and more modern ones (in addition to some of the things other people have mentioned) is the changing nature of acting over the years. The further back you go in the history of film, the more you'll find movie acting merging with stage acting: Bi...

Does anyone know if this answer is correct?

Like are those things that he mentioned actually what cause the old sounding sound of old movies?

@NapoleonWilson I have not had time. I was duped into going to what I thought was a screening a few weeks ago, but it was basically just a preview :(

am I even accurately describing the sound of the era in my question?

@Tyco I don't know if it's universally correct and the singlemost only exactly correct answer. But it certainly makes some very good and reasonable points. Afterall the question is quite broad and slightly subjective, so that there probably isn't the 100% obvious solution.

I was hoping the effect had been observed and explained by film history academics

But maybe im just imagining the difference

I mean, it's great question, but I'm not sure it's that exactly to pin down to some specific thing, it is a bit of a subjective impression to some degree.

I have only watched a few "old" movies

A bit similar to that:

Q: Why do actors in old movies look old?

Alexei AverchenkoActors in the movies and TV shows from the 50s and the 60s often look old to me, probably way older than their actual age, or older than than you would expect their roles to be. First of all, am I just imagining things or is there really a perceivable difference in the age (be it real or just vis...

Yeah I would guess its a mix of causes

Anonymous
Oh haha yes they also look different

Anonymous
I had explained that to myself as just a side effect of evolving aesthetic standards

4:41 PM
Probably mixed with a less clear sound quality in general maybe.
But of course noone says you have to accept his answer if you want to wait for more insights. Maybe there's even more to it.

I wonder if there is any new movie that has tried to recreate the old movie sound

Anonymous
Oh, yeah I plan to accept that one, but also wanted to give some incentive to draw out more if there is any more to draw out

And of course keeping the bounty as long as possible can always help to lure in new (and possibly better) answers.
@steelerfan Yeah, you talked about them just showing scenes from previous movies and in retrospect I wasn't sure if that even was sarcasm about the new movie, because the movie is indeed littered with references to previous Bond films (not necessarily in a bad way, though).

I wonder what characteristics of today's movies will be considered idiosyncratic in 70 years

Anonymous
Not just like our clothing or accents though.. that's pretty obvious

4:48 PM
@NapoleonWilson Yeah, I figured out that it was NOT a screening about 20 minutes in. I was annoyed.

That's an intresting question, but for that we'd also have to know what movies in 70 years will be, i.e. in which way they'll be different from the movies now.

Anonymous
Yup. Maybe there won't even be movies

Probably the 67th reboot of the MCU fighting against the 54th Star Wars sequel and the 36th remake of Jurassic World.
