Q: Endgame : captain america using mjolnir

Sami YemaneIn avengers end game captain uses Thor's hummer because he is worthy. What I don't get is why he was able to use lightening bolts!! In ragnarok Odin tells Thor that mjolnir was not the source of his powers it was simply a tool to control his power. That means that mjolnir doesn't created bolts o...

Q: Difference between versions of Carnival of Souls (1962)

GabrielI've come across two files for this movie: one has a runtime of ~84 mins, as the uploaded version in MUBI, and the other is ~78 mins long, as stated by IMDb. These are about ~6 extra minutes in the longer version. Is this a single portion that was removed or several? Why is this difference prese...

Q: Why did the tripods make a loud horn sound?

BrettFromLAIn War of the Worlds (2005), the tripods attack various cities and incinerate humans. Periodically, they blast a loud (and scary) horn sound. It doesn't seem that horn sound is a signal, because attackers never want to communicate their intentions to those they'...

Movie of the day: Traffic
What a quiet day. I bet it's another holiday in India.
@M.A.R. It's Sunday. :P
@AJ Lots of other Sundays saw Ankit ranting about MCU or DCEU or good movies or great movies or his profile picture or
Not posting as an answer since I don't have anything to back me up, but I really think this was a showcase of humanity's inexplicable weakness compared to the aliens. As Morgan Freeman set the tone early, my admittedly grim take is the aliens were indifferent to humans' reactions, like a scientist exterminating bacteria they no longer need in a lab, or exterminating vermin with insecticide. The horn stood as a "guys, I just started cleansing this area" signal for them. Out-of-universe, of course, it's to provoke our primal "HOLY SH*T" that we didn't know existed anymore ;) — M.A.R. 39 secs ago
4:38 PM
@M.A.R. Well, that explanation is quite some back up really.
How so?
Backing up your answer doesn't just mean quoting Wikipedia or some director interview.
I Googled for a bit but I wasn't able to find any other similar interpretations
@M.A.R. Because you're resoning your analysis based on the film and its themes.
Oh OK, should I post an answer then?
4:39 PM
@M.A.R. Again, "backing up" doesn't just mean repeating what other people say.
@NapoleonWilson But, quoting 1984, if I'm a minority of one interpreting the movie this way, doesn't make my take a bit . . . outlandish?
@M.A.R. Well, it certainly sounds reasonable. Maybe make it two instead of one paragraph. ;-)
It might not be what the dude's looking for, since it's probably not "in-universe canon" or whatever, but it's probably as far as you can get there. And it's better than strange pseudo-science fan-fiction anyway.
OK, pasted the comment in the answer box, I'll work on it when I feel like it
@M.A.R. Well, you'll see in the votes if your interpretation makes sense. Every interpretation ultimately starts with just one single dude finding the courage to dare speak it out.
@NapoleonWilson Literally figuratively 99 percent of whatever's on the internet about Spielberg's 2005 adaptation is either grumpy critics nitpicking about small details and looking for explanations of why they wanna admit it's scary, or other opinion pieces that say "aw come on, it's not THAT bad!"
4:43 PM
Even the ones you find on Google. Their quality is (hopefully) what made them "popular" enough for you and Google to consider them "accepted".
@M.A.R. I think it's areally good film actually.
Riiight? It's genuinely paranoid and unsettling.
Now, I was never good at grading horror, but if it succeeds, and if it's not immediately nonsensical, then it's a good horror movie in my book
Yes, I found it genuinely scary in the cinema. The bottom-up view through the eyes of some average rando achieved exactly what it should.
I wouldn't classify it as "horror" really. But maybe that's why I found it so good how scary it actually was.
Classify it as "Ethan Hunt"
Shutter frigging Island is on TV!
Ethan Hunt getting hunted maybe.
(Though, the actual Ethan Hunt gets hunted often enough, too.)
Ohhh, now it makes sense! </Nick Frost>
5:17 PM
Posted an answer. I guess having yourself heard is kinda relieving.
@M.A.R. I have seen it but forgot almost all the key spikes of emotion.
might watch it
@M.A.R. nah, just setting up git and all
btw @M.A.R. are you by chance in a mood to change your profile description? "I talk a lot" and then the link refers to "chat". ;)
@M.A.R. That's the best about it afterall.
5:43 PM
@NogShine I'M BACK!!!
@AnkitSharma PING! PING!
@NapoleonWilson PIIIIIIING!!!!!
On my 3rd cup of coffee...just sayin' ;)
What are you doing?
Are you watching anything awesome or making anything awesome?
Not really. Sitting around and sundaying. Having the robot walk around and clean up my room for me.
Waiting for prime time to start so I can watch stuff on TV.
5:51 PM
What do you mean waiting for Prime to start?
Prime time.
@steelersquirrel I haven’t had any for three days. It used to be three on a daily average
Like...on regular tv?
It's what the primary time for evening films is called, starting at 20:15.
@ankiiiiiii Wuuuut? How do you function without coffee? lol
@NapoleonWilson So...you're like old school and watching regular tv? ;)
5:52 PM
@steelersquirrel Sure, as long as it still has nice films to offer.
@NapoleonWilson that’s when good movies started and it was the sleep time in my house
@steelersquirrel tea
I'm like a total tv snob now that I have streaming :P
Of course...my nephew had to set it all up for me, because I'm technologically disabled :P
The problem with streaming is that you have all kinds of films available, but you're never to 100% in the mood to just start watching any of them. ;-)
But when something runs on TV you're just "eh, could as well watch that!".
@NapoleonWilson true, the joy of setting up a reminder on TV and waiting for even 2 days for it is lovely
I rarely can sit still long enough to watch all that stuff anyways. I just think I'm cool because I can :P
5:55 PM
Yesterday I did want to watch something from my watchlist, but...they already pulled it off Amazon Prime. ;-(
@NapoleonWilson Awwwwww. You need to buy the streaming channels, silly bean!
@steelersquirrel Yeah...you'd probably take about 7 attempts to finish something anyway.
@steelersquirrel Amazon Prime is a streaming channel!
@NapoleonWilson Wuuut? How would you even know that? :P
@NapoleonWilson I mean like...Skinemax and HBO and stuff.
Own *
Skinemax? Who pays for porn in the 21st century?
5:57 PM
<points to self>
Cinemax has gotten better. I rarely see soft porn on it anymore ;)
You do know that I was talking about Cinemax, right?
We just call it Skinemax because it plays soft porn after midnight here in the states.
But I don't really need to pay for 3 different streaming services whose films I'll not watch either. ;-)
@steelersquirrel Yes, yes, don't worry. ;-)
I think that most of the stuff on Amazon Prime is total crap. Hulu is much better.
@steelersquirrel The regular TV channels did that here already, at least in the past.
@NapoleonWilson Oh, that's right...Europe. lol
@steelersquirrel Oh, well, they have nice things, too. They basically have all the things you'd in turn miss on Netflix and Hulu and whatever. ;-)
6:00 PM
There is laughable B movies in Prime. I seriously saw one called "Wererooster" It was effing hilarious.
This rooster was actually running around howling and attacking people on the full moon. LOLOLOL
Well, there's laughable bullshit everywhere. They have to fill the gaps somehow. But I also got interesting stuff on my watchlist.
Oh! And there was one about a killer pinata. Hehehehe!
Their recommendation algorithm is probably just really good. ;-P
The next ridiculous one I am going to watch is Arachnoquake. Haha!
So what are you complaining about? ;-)
6:02 PM
@NapoleonWilson LIKE WHAT?!?!
@NapoleonWilson I know, right? I see that stuff and I just HAVE to watch it :P
@steelersquirrel Like Atomic Blonde, The Andromeda Strain, Hostiles or Casino.
gasp Have you seen Casino before?
That's why it's on my watchlist forever.
OMFG!!! Casino is AWESOME!!!
Yes, yes, I knowsns.
6:06 PM
It's totally a true story, too. I watched the Biography on the real people and the movie stays really true to the actual story.
@ankiiiiiii Why are you drinking tea instead of coffee?
Oh, good idea!
Wait. Good idea for what?
Awww, don't worry. I also drank about 3 coffees over the day already.
6:11 PM
Where in the eff is @AnkitSharma? What time is it where he is?
<impatient squirrel>
Am I that boring? :'(
Wuuuut? Never!
He just usually answers my ping after a day and he didn't yet.
I see.
6:19 PM
My nephew gave me a copy of The Martian on DVD. lol
I still haven't watched it...
You're totally easy. lol
> Je suis facile.
I can't believe you remembered that!!!!
Why wouldn't I?
@steelersquirrel I read listened to the book last year.
6:21 PM
I don't know. It seems like forever ago
I know, right? :'(
@NapoleonWilson You can tell me what happens. I will probably never watch the thing ;)
@NapoleonWilson Awwwwww. It wasn't that long ago :)
@steelersquirrel It's pretty much exactly like the film really. So watching that would be sufficient. ;-)
I would have watched it if someone wasn't constantly distracting me with shenanigans. I'm totally innocent in all of it! ;)
Oh, of course!
6:24 PM
@steelersquirrel it's cheaper and closer to where I live
the coffee they make is substandard.
The trick is making it at home so you don't have to walk miles for a single coffee/tea. ;-)
@ankiiiiiii Where do you live? Like...which continent?
6:32 PM
but not counted as asians I think
Hard guess. ;-)
@NapoleonWilson I live in hostel
but at home I can have a better coffee but still tea is common
@ankiiiiiii Wuuut? Do you have evil people try to lure you into their traps so that rich people can kill you in weird ways? ;)
I live in the Pacific Northwest. We take our coffee very seriously up in here ;)
6:34 PM
@steelersquirrel well the govt sucked me into a top university, and then they'd kill me with unemployment, so yeah!
We have a French press at work. And recently our boss bought a different brand of coffee and it makes a huge difference. Like, I already knew that's about the best brand of ground coffee available, but I was surprised how big the difference is. When he's back from vacation we have to have a serious talk on the company's coffee buying strategy. ;-)
File a grievance!
@steelersquirrel wow such continental references! It's India for me
Oh, nice! You're with Ankit and AJ!
6:36 PM
Well, they're naturally bigger on tea.
@NapoleonWilson yup and nog and shree(probably) too
Basically about everyone in chat. ;-)
hahaha movies it is!
We all know the size of Bollywood + Tollywood
SE, really, though. It's a natural globalization consequence.
6:37 PM
I know, right? There are only like 1 other American here. @DForck42 and Catija when she is here.
The only reason we're not all Chinese is because they have their own intranet. ;-)
But...I haven't been around much lately. There might be more that I just don't know.
@NapoleonWilson consequence makes it so bad to hear lol
Where is @M.A.R. from?
6:38 PM
Oh, sorry, no. ;-) Result?
jk, but he knows Persian
and dutch
I was correct
Yes, I'm pretty sure he's irate Iranian.
@NapoleonWilson better ;)
which one among Iran, Iraq is under white house's hatred? pardon if it's sensitive
Uh...both? ;-)
6:41 PM
@NapoleonWilson and Japanese are too busy working their jobs off
@ankiiiiiii I think Americans are supposed to hate both ;)
@ankiiiiiii I don't think there so many of them, though.
Although, back in my days Tokyo was supposedly the biggest city ever or something.
@ankiiiiiii Hardly anything offends me. Don't worry ;)
@steelersquirrel I kinda reduced the generalisation from Americans to White House but okay. the president cannot speak against public opinion so much anyway
@ankiiiiiii Yeah...
6:43 PM
@ankiiiiiii Well...most Americans hate our President, so...there's that. lol
Except for my Dad. My Dad loves him.
@steelersquirrel but people cheer for him , so he speaks(spits) more hate
@steelersquirrel Yeah...
@steelersquirrel is he a conservative white too?
@steelersquirrel I too am a bit numb
But I recently read about chat flag-> suspension on meta.
@ankiiiiiii He's white. He's kinda conservative, I guess.
@ankiiiiiii Meh. It's not a big deal. I have been chat suspended a few times. It's not the end of the world. It's just annoying at what some people get offended by.
6:47 PM
It was a all caps "stop editing my posts" by catija out of context
@steelersquirrel yeah chat feels fine
Yeah. Catija's a bad ass. lol
I wonder if she remembers that I'm coming to stay with her during the next solar eclipse :P
@steelersquirrel (join those two words) but network wide suspension hurts
Q: Why was muru's account suspended?

Lynobmuru is one of the best users here, like Braiam and many other good folks. Out of curiosity, may I know why his account is suspended? He is a good guy. I just found out about his suspension by seeing he only has 1 reputation. I can't imagine what a veteran and nice man like him could do to deserv...

@ankiiiiiii Well...2 well known users on SF&F got network wide suspension. It doesn't seem to bother them. They just go chat somewhere else.
Chat suspensions are like 30 minutes, though, unless they're seriously intentional. So it's usually not something to make a fuss about.
6:50 PM
I mean i have had a few chat suspensions.
It ain't that bad.
Sometimes you get mods with total power trips, too.
Meh, it was my fault.
Yeah. It's a rite of passage :P
I never really had a problem with power hungry mods
I am reluctant to talk about other people behind their backs (though its public but nobody goes searching their name on chat) but I dont have a lot of friends to share such incidents about
Actually none is on SE
6:51 PM
@steelersquirrel Yeah...but often it's users who can't accept the fact that some intenet rando does have power over them, so they can't really listen to or accept aynthing they say.
@TheMattbat999 unless I am about to break some great news in chat yeah ;)
@ankiiiiiii Lol
I feel that
@TheMattbat999 is there any site I should be wary of?
hi btw! I am Ankit
@ankiiiiiii It's usually not good to discuss that stuff in totally unrelated chatrooms anyway. There's not much to come from that, especially if that's like a year ago.
@ankiiiiiii none that i know of on SE.
I am Mattbat
Seasoned veteran of... eh video games and ok at game dev
6:53 PM
@TheMattbat999 I've seen a few. I just stopped going to their sites.
@TheMattbat999 mainly on Apple and about to reach 2k on that. so moderate-noob side
@steelersquirrel like?
@NapoleonWilson I get it. But...there were a few when the new Lit site came on.
@ankiiiiiii i am almost to.... 2.5k on Arqade.
Like 5 rep away
@TheMattbat999 There was one that was a mod on a non-graduated site that would come on the other bigger sites and just start throwing orders around and suspending people. It made a lot of people mad.
6:55 PM
@TheMattbat999 do you have a Q I can upvote?
Then let's best forget it so we don't all get mad about old crap. ;-)
Who's mad?
Are you already starting to bark orders at me? :P
Noone... yet. ;-)
@NapoleonWilson yeah I was quite sad for muru though. yesterday I was sad about ex co founder
Oh, ffs! ;)
6:56 PM
@steelersquirrel No, but shut up now!
Nice! Way to be a bad ass, Napoleon!
@ankiiiiiii i mean... i do. But i would hate to recommend any because that would be begging for rep
@steelersquirrel ah ok. My run in with mods... well... didn't end well
For me anywaus
@TheMattbat999 yea yea I forgot to add xd lol etc. Though i think it was done once on IPS, it must have been a special number
It never ends well for users. lol
