Q: About Apex SQL Refactor and SSMS keyboard shortcuts being broken

Martin SuraskyHi DBA Stack Exchange! Today I tried Apex SQL Refactor and right from the get go, once installed and integrated into my T-SQL dev tool of Choice (SSMS 18.3.1) I noticed that some Keyboard shortcuts stopped working. One example (maybe there are more, but this one I’m pretty sure): After installi...

And how is the accepted answer not really a solution, but a response from OP?
Not DBA related really.
Could be deleted IMO.

@hot2use It may not be a solution, but I think it answers the question (albeit an answer that might be out of date soon)
It's not much different from the "how do I enable dark theme in SSMS" question and the "you can't" that pops up every now and then

It's a question about tools used by dbas. Doesn't seem off-topic to me.

And the answer will stay relevant for as long as the tool version mentioned in the question is in use.

6:27 AM
The question has a positive score, four reopen votes, and no delete votes

Actually that's old news already, the question is reopened now

Well look at that

I mean, it still has no delete votes but apart from the question's being reopened the score is even more positive now

Ok. The community has decided. Thanks for your feedback. :-)

You say "community"... It's just a bunch of trolls reopening questions as they please

6:40 AM
mmmm. I still have the opinion that They are working on it isn't much of a solution (quality-wise).

@hot2use But if you have the same problem and find that question through Google, does it contain valuable information?
To me it does, as it would tell me "stop looking for a problem on your side and wasting time, it's confirmed by a vendor to be fixed in a later version"

@TomV you have a point there

@AndriyM I always suspected you were a subtle troll
You and that @ypercubeᵀᴹ

Q: Under new processes, Monica's removal should complete the Conduct Review, not request Reinstatement

ZivIt's been stated repeatedly that Monica will be able to apply for reinstatement once the new process is in place. However, it's also firmly agreed that no process was applied during her removal, and Monica's statements are that she has not yet received an explanation of why she was removed, or...

@PaulWhite I had to go a long way to realising that myself, because no-one ever sat me down to properly explain what trolling was.
4

I bet you’re determined to help fight the problem now and want to know how you can help, yeah?

6:54 AM
Especially the subtle ones

I mean, how can I fight against myself?
Hm, that does sound a little as though I'm interested...

Andriy has started his election campaign early

If there are new elections Andriy should be a candidate
3

There are no elections anywhere on SE for the first time I can remember
@TomV Only if Evan refuses to run

@PaulWhite Bugger! There goes all my subtlety

7:06 AM
😀

I wouldn't compete with Evan, though. I couldn't

No one can compete with GREATNESS

Not with His Greatness anyway

I’ve long thought we should only elect people that don’t want the job

We could have had COTW and Phil as moderators :D

7:13 AM
Ah, so one would just need to be subtle enough to feign disinclination, I see

Glad I could help

@PaulWhite The list of candidates would be very long if everybody who doesn't want the job has to apply.

Are you accusing me of being a subtle troll?

@TomV We'd only be considering those who refused to even apply.

And those that applied but didn’t really want to

7:24 AM
I guess the list might still be a bit long, but perhaps reading the applications could help narrow it down

We have to disregard those that didn’t apply but wanted to
Seems straightforward to me

> Why me? Honestly, I have no idea. I don't even know how I let myself be talked into this. Just... don't bother.
^^^ that would seem like a good candidate

Moderators might be a thing of the past on SE. They cause all sorts of issues. And some people don't even like them any way. Ahem

I’ve decided to solve the problem by no longer offering my time for free. I will be invoicing SE at my standard rate going forward

@PaulWhite A solid retirement plan

7:36 AM
Is it too soon to refer to the Monica situation as Mexit?

@PaulWhite Until it's delayed at least 6 times

6 to 8

Heh

@PaulWhite Never, because Monica didn't want out. She was kicked.

She might be a subtle troll
I hear a lot of moderators are

@PaulWhite Here I was thinking Sara was the troll in all this

Oooooo. He said Sara.

@hot2use It says in the description, "a world phenomenon", but it's the first time I've discovered both the person and the band for myself. I liked the song very much though, thanks for sharing!

@AndriyM Supertramp have some great songs
and you're welcome

I've been pondering going back to University and doing a Phd in "What would it take for Evan to become a moderator on Stack Exchange?". I think £10 million and 40 years is a reasonable amount & timeframe. Where do I get the research money from?

If I just lose a shitload of money, but grow lots, VCs will throw cash at me?

just saying

7:55 AM
Also Evan himself might be interested in the research, perhaps he could help too

Morning

@AndriyM You could check out "the logical song" by them too, I like that one very much

@TomV Listening to that now, thanks. Rhythmically, resembles Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush a little, interesting

Love Kate Bush

LynobWe're running Centos 7, we're in the process Mariadb 5.5, upgrading to 10.3 today. PHP 5. 10:32 AM
@billinkc It was optional when I went to school back in the late Jurassic.
@hot2use I miss Bluebird chicken chips with dip made from reduced cream and maggi onion soup. This is the unofficial national snack of New Zealand.
@Philᵀᴹ It would be an interesting hypothesis to test but I can think of much better things to do with £10 million, like investigating "Will I find life fulfilment lying on a beach in the south of France?"

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells maybe you can order it online maggi.co.nz/products/packet-soups/onion

@McNets There are outfits here in the UK that import it (at least there used to be). Not cheap, though.
I did, however find Vegemite in a supermarket for the first time in a couple of years, so I have that going for me.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells let me suggest my own receipt of onion soup

@hot2use Try the Pogues' version if you want a more folky mix. Metallica also did a passably good cover of it.
@McNets That looks nice. Its a long while since I made homebrew onion soup.

10:51 AM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I thought Metallicas version was better personally
But I really like Metallica

I still don’t know what they’re trying to say.

@Colin'tHart Question is if that message comes from Microsoft Windows or the Red Hat VirtIO driver code

11:08 AM
@George.Palacios my ex was (still is) a rocker chick and was into Metallica. I like the Pogues version - it sounds more like a traditional folk song in their arrangement.

11:33 AM
@TomV you'd first have to join a rugby match. That sounds like a death wish ;)

1 hour later…
12:56 PM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ I've already done something stupid enough recently

@TomV what is it?

@McNets I've agreed to try a half marathon next year

@TomV you can get it, I thought you get married for the 4th time or something similar.
;)

@McNets Yeah they tried to talk me into doing a full, but I agreed to a half. I'm pretty confident I can do that

1:12 PM
@TomV The last time I participated in a half marathon, was taking the photographer behind my motorcycle.

@TomV how's training going? :)

@Marian I think you know :p

yeah, can't see much running lately, mostly biking, that's why I asked :)

@Marian Work & weather made me do some indoor stuff

but you're looking strong, I think you'll get through that semi without a problem

1:17 PM
And the sunday rides are more of an opportunity to chat with my brother
@Marian You've done a full one off-road if i saw that correctly right?

1:38 PM
not that strong, no, just a semi in the mountains, but it was quite difficult with about 2k elevation difference
let's say it was a bit of a faster hike :D
when's your race?
this Mad Max theme makes it funnier

@Marian It just came up this weekend after a few beers. I still have to pick one

that's how I got myself in a 60 km bike race on a rainy day at about 4-5 C and with a hell of a climb in it ..
we need to stop drinking mate!

Or find other people to drink with
I see there is one in Bucharest, I could do that one :D

1:58 PM
@TomV ha, I can accompany you if you need a slow pacer :))

A: postgres simple number to string mapping

cameron_prebbleYou could consider just having the mapping performed with JSON. SELECT '{"1":"APPLE","2":"GOOGLE","3":"MSFT","4":"AMAZON"}'::json->>"stocks"."type"::string AS "company_name" FROM "stocks" This is probably only useful if you have a small number of enum options (otherwise the query will get kind...

Why does JSON have to spread like a nasty airborne disease? If we eradicated it and forced people to be immunised for the greater good of the world, someone would end up not doing so & pockets of JSON would appear when you least expected it, like a pimple on your back that really hurts to squeeze '{ "category": "rant" }'

@Philᵀᴹ the question states "100's more"

If I was mod, I would settle all the problems and drama. StackExchange couldn't have that. They need to prolong the alt-right drama until they can eventually be the Official Q/A Resource of the Fourth Reich.

@EvanCarroll What would you do to settle said drama?

I have a multi-pronged approach on this.
Here is one of my ideas.

Sounds like a pitch fork

Invite the drama llamas, harness them for the power of their coats and become the High Emperor of Haute Llama fashion

We try a "beta" program, where it looks like Christianity and Biblical Hermunetics gets merged with Islam.StackExchange and the NEW QueerAndProud.StackExchange, and anyone who says anything at all negative about the merge gets perma-banned and their account doxed, with a signed letter ceremoniously displayed on the new stackexchange.com/antifa.
that will solve between 10-100% of the problem.
We can also redirect users randomly to a hotornot clone with pepe the frog erotica. Gay and straight alike. And if you ever give 3/10 or higher, also a perma-ban. Straight to the gulag.

3:45 PM
@George.Palacios you didn't expect a serious answer, did you? ;)

I am serious.
The Pepe wankers will fail the test, and the religious intolerance will subside.
it'll work. It's a plan. That makes me just like Elizabeth Warren. Except my plan is actually progressive, I have 3 fewer billionare donors, don't talk to Wallstreet, and I know I'm not a native american.

The Evan Carroll: "Now Kiss" plan. Looks like a winner
2

@EvanCarroll Don't know about everyone but for me it's hard to take this seriously. It greatly diminishes the credibility of the words "I'm serious" too.
2

4:10 PM
@EvanCarroll You've not addressed the Shog problem there.
@AndriyM You really need to work on your intuition for "subtle".
I'm broadly on board with Evan's plan so long as it is applied to all extremists.
And by "on board" I mean laughing at.

Q: An apology to our community, and next steps

David FullertonI’m David Fullerton, Stack Overflow’s CTO, responsible for the product, engineering, and community teams. 5:09 PM
@Philᵀᴹ Flavour of the month. Everybody had soooo much fun with XML that they just couldn't wait for a better model.

5:20 PM
@PaulWhite You might be right. Perhaps I subconsciously decided that in online communication people need to have a safe way to let others know when they are being serious, because there are very few other cues to help with that, and I probably assigned that role to phrases like "I'm serious". Other than that, I'm perfectly fine to say "you got me" if I allowed myself to be duped. Evan probably got me there.

6:00 PM
Nah he probably was serious, but I wasn't.

6:19 PM
@PaulWhite The S9 problem is addressed with a different plan. In order to sign in, you'll have to answer the question, "which US-backed regime is currently participating in ethnic cleansing has committed thousands of acts of terrorism, killed children, and instituted a system to systematically deny others rights?" There will be two options. One of them will say "Israel, and Zionism is a real threat" and the other will say "I <3 Pepe".
Then if you click "I <3 Pepe" you get permabanned for hating facts.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells SGML for life

@CadeRoux BTW, I'm totally cool with that title.
Together we can make Fully Automated Gay Luxury Space Communism

@EvanCarroll You got some flags on those posts. Make sure you stay on the right side of the line.

6:40 PM
I'm trying to connect a VM (VMWare workstation) in my laptop to one SQL Server. I have a remote connection through a VPN to my Firewall. On the host machine I can connect using SSMS to the SQL Server, in the VM I can ping SQL Server but I can't connect using Visual Studio. (Network related error). Firewall on the VM is disabled and I'm using a bridged network between host and VM.
Any idea?
SQL default port 1433

How are you connecting in visual studio? .NET code/ado.net libraries or the server explorer doodad?

@McNets Probably routing entries set by the VPN don't allow traffic from the VM network. Whether it can be fixed depends on the type of VPN software you're running.

@PaulWhite Is it possible that people are flagging it BECAUSE THEY AGREE and want moderators to read it? I think so.

@EvanCarroll It is possible

6:56 PM
I'm not even sure how this is such a shushed and contentious issue. FFS I'm a jew and was married under a chuppa. Getting banned for using a term "zionist" is total lame sauce.
Especially when we're pretending to care about oppressed minorities.

idk all I know is that flags can be handled by 10k users and mods from anywhere
they may not know you personally
or perhaps they do 🙂
anyway I thought you would benefit from the information

A chalupa (Spanish pronunciation: [tʃaˈlupa]) is a specialty dish of south-central Mexico, including the states of Puebla, Guerrero, and Oaxaca. Chalupas are made by pressing a thin layer of masa dough around the outside of a small mold, in the process creating a concave container resembling the boat of the same name, and then deep frying the result to produce crisp, shallow corn cups. These are filled with various ingredients such as shredded chicken, pork, chopped onion, chipotle pepper, red salsa, and/or green salsa. They can in many cases resemble tostadas since both are made of a fried or...

what is taking the UK so long
gahhhhwwwdd

7:02 PM
well the government won one vote
so that's progress
lol

Brexit is not going to happen.

Johnson finally won his first vote?

329 to 299 in favour of the withdrawal agreement
322 to 308 against the timetable
DUP would have swung it

I thought for sure he was going to break record for never having won a vote.

@PaulWhite you mean AGAINST the withdrawal agreement

7:04 PM
@CadeRoux well that's no great feat when you have a small minority government
@EvanCarroll nope
30 vote majority for a second reading

interesting
still not happening.
I wish I could run for PM of the UK.

Who knows. It's a joke.

I would run on a platform of having Borris Johnson write a letter to himself addressed "Dear Beta Male"
He can sign it, "Cucky McJoke Face"

Personal view: they should leave on Oct 31 with the deal they have and make the best of the transition arrangements and get the best future trading relationship. But I don't really care. I just want it off the news.

I would have the support of 100% of the UK.
I also agree @PaulWhite. I am on the left and for Brexit.

7:10 PM
Good on ya Evan

but if Greece couldn't pull it off with a resolved populace then the UK is going to have to get really lucky to pull it off with this comical shit show.

@billinkc Server explorer

@EvanCarroll wasn't Greece bankrupt at the time though?
not the strongest bargaining position
The EU is a funny thing. As far as I can tell, BrExit is the only thing they agree about.

Might see if a command line tool can get through - sqlcmd -S myServer -U billinkc -P 11Herbs -Q "SELECT @@ServerName"

11Herbs lol

7:13 PM
and obviously, disable all UAC/FW stuff if you can
Possibly run VS as admin
@PaulWhite I put the Consistent in ACID

Not to mention this makes the UK basically just servants of the USA. And, I guess I can get used to tea and crumpets and season passes to all assets in the Privy Purse. It's only a matter of time before we place billboards for American beer on Big Ben and hold tailgating events at Buckingham Palace.

snort
Jesus GBP USD is a mess today

@EvanCarroll are you allowed to be PM and Supreme Leader of Stack Exchange at the same time?

7:30 PM
@Philᵀᴹ ... "of Stack Exchange"
you just qualified that statement to the point of unreasonable.

@billinkc nope, maybe @mustaccio is right and it's a firewall issue
I'll try to configure the VPN inside the VM
> Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 11.0 : Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [53]. .
Can I force TCP/IP?

@McNets I believe you can on the advanced tab of the connect dialog
Or you can disable it from configuration manager and the client configuration utility

@TomV I'm trying with sqlcmd (command line)
Let me see

Ah OK I just came in on mobile and haven't scrolled back. I thought you mentioned management studio earlier

@EvanCarroll apologies, your greatness
I bow to your superiority

7:44 PM
@TomV not working
yup, get it!

9:13 PM
Lool
I like how he specifically calls it Boris Johnson's extension
That's right!
Point that out. That idiot moron could have refused to write the extension, found himself in contempt of parliament and forced the queen to dismiss him.
He was talking the trash. should have had the guts.

10:02 PM
