Speaking of rust.. It's awesome

i've not yet tried it. i've been really enjoying my time with Go, though

I’m being punished at the moment and have to write JavaScript

wow. @Philᵀᴹ you really must've pissed off someone
@Philᵀᴹ ... writing a JS -> Perl compiler?

It’s not as bad as it sounds. It’s half BA stuff, then customising (NetSuite) using JS

@swasheck love is an understatement. Rust is awesome and the community is great.

6:17 PM
I have written an emulator recently though twitter.com/trollied/status/1223245298237087745?s=21

@swasheck we maintain the perl compiler!

@EvanCarroll what are some of the things that you enjoy about Rust?

we talking about rust the game or rust the programming... whatever it is?

@Philᵀᴹ very cool

I love how I can get the stuff I want I want in higher level languages, that I'm used to. And I love having an ecosystem that I'm used to in higher level languages in a lower level language. It's nice to be able to write algebraic types, and traits, and to have something like npm/cpan/pip for C.

6:28 PM
Is rust statically linked?

pretty incredible that this pipeline operator didn't think about cybersecurity as a threat to their operations.

What are they gonna do, steal our pipe? Wait, what, they can do the equivalent by shutting down the flow or overriding safety controls and bursting pipes? WHY DIDN'T YOU PENCILNECKED GEEKS TELL ME?

Oh, read Sandworm. Amazing book.

@EvanCarroll hmm. sounds like you are enjoying the development experience features.
is that an appropriate summary?
it's fine if it is. perfectly legitimate. i just didnt know if you found a unique implementation experience. i dont write much system-level stuff so i never really thought it to be an appropriate aim for myself

6:39 PM
@swasheck yes, certainly I can do all of this in C. However, it's certainly a better experience to use Rust, it's more efficient, and the code is less vulnerable to human error.
I would probably use C++ but the ecosystem is maddening

very cool. i almost literally flipped a coin to decide between trying to learn rust and trying to learn go. the deciding factor was actually the system implementation focus. i decided i wasnt quite to that level yet.

the only thing i can do in C with certainty is blue screen windows

The world's first cyber attack was a US attack on a Russian pipeline in 1982.

7:00 PM
@CadeRoux That's a fairy tale, by most accounts.

Really? It was covered in this talk

A: Naming items in Value clause for readability

Ignacio GonzalezYours is a good way. I usually use one line for each column. It can get really long but I find it more readable. Something like this: insert into Table1 ( Col1 ,Col2 ,... ,Coln ) values ( One /* Col1 */ ,Two /* Col2 */ ,... ,ValN /* Coln */ ); In some cases, using a JSON string could ...

@CadeRoux as I said above, read Sandworm. Damn good book

Cool - added it to my list

Q: Did the CIA blow up a Siberian pipeline in 1982?

dont_shog_me_broThe Telegraph claimed in 2004 that the CIA blew up a Russian gas pipeline in Siberia, by tricking the operator into installing booby-trapped software. Thomas Reed, a former US Air Force secretary who was in Ronald Reagan's National Security Council, discloses what he called just one example o...

pretty sure all future wars will take place in part by memes.

so in looking for the sonic movie trailer, i just discovered that there's going to be a top gun 2
@mustaccio "booby trap" always makes me think of the goonies

@EvanCarroll HUMAN ERROR? surely you never make mistakes though!

i heard it is going to be another act of vandalism

it's for other, inferior programmers.

and dont call him shirley

@MaxVernon I let other people contribute code too, and when they do -- they and never me screw up.
my brain has evolved a quantum singularity

7:31 PM
@EvanCarroll you work for cPanel? I’m surprised that’s not a massive perl/ruby/python mess

@EvanCarroll phew

"my brain has evolved a quantum singularity"

I do. They pay me in gold bars.

@PeterVandivier that's a tight hug

7:36 PM
My love for all of you is a quantum singularity

@jcolebrand "things did not go completely to plan".... ha!

#nailedIt

masters of understatement

"These older buildings had more sound elevator shafts than modern ones" could have been another way to state it
But I'm sure it's fine to ride in them

8:13 PM
can you lock mysql tables with a select statement?

8:24 PM
mysql ... or my sql

8:34 PM
mysql

9:29 PM
I can’t help but feel their lives would be easier with a DBA and a local copy of the data labs.spotify.com/2020/02/18/wrapping-up-the-decade-a-data-story

9:41 PM
@EvanCarroll C++ is really nice if you knows C, I've used it for a long time

@James one that has a for update in it?

9:57 PM
@Philᵀᴹ no glory in using time-tested tools.

@swasheck well bigtable is really neat though, I use it for cloudflare logs and it's pricing scheme works really well for my needs
I tried storing it on a sqlserver db and it just used so much disk space it made no sense monetarily
Aaah no I'm confused between bigtable and bigquery. Bigquery is cheap, bigtable is hosted and for bigger ops iirc
