@CortAmmon Nice! Congrats - I believe you deserve some stash... :D
(Or at least, I'm assuming that happens on SEs such as this one)

@MonicaCellio I'll go with @Mithrandir24601 on this one - I haven't read anything on the subject. :-)
@CortAmmon Congratulations!

@CortAmmon 100k? I can't even make 20k on CR.
Of course, not being active doesn't help :P

@Hosch250 It's taken a bit =) Of course, competition helped. I had to put my nose to the grindstone a bit when Willk came in. He's a worldbuilding beast!

Yeah. On Code Review, I got to the point where I was constantly saying the same things over and over.
And that drives me nuts, so I kind of stopped.

Code review seems tricky for that. Almost makes you want to start a youtube series teaching people the basic mistakes we keep seeing over and over!

@CortAmmon Could even pull examples from the code review website. It could do double duty as a resource to point people to when they show up with one of the common mistakes.
@Hosch250 Speaking of stupid code mistakes, have you seen the story about the group that got the linux dev group to adopt a code of conduct, and then used it arbitrarially banish some of the biggest contributers for petty or non existant reasons? Seems they were upset that not enough of the coders were diverse, and that it worked as a meritocracy (only the best code gets included).
Unfortunately the banished devs are threatening to just withdraw all of their code, which would essentially break linux for years.

worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/125834/… - "What if the biology of the two species was different enough that they had defining phonetic differences[?]"
This sort of reminds me of British English and American English.
If a Brit says /ˈtʃɑːtə/ and an American says /ˈtʃʌɹɾɚ/, I'm going to recognize both of those as the same word, even though the two people used almost a completely different set of sounds in order to say them.
It just so happens that a British accent and an American accent have a lot of similarities (which is no surprise, since both families of accents are descended from Britain).

@TannerSwett What language is that?

/ˈtʃɑːtə/ and /ˈtʃʌɹɾɚ/? Those are British and American pronunciations of the English word "charter".

So it is some kind of phonetic spelling?

Yeah, IPA.

Ah

5:52 PM
It's not too hard to imagine a language having two extremely different accents, where most sounds differ between the two accents, but where speakers of the respective accents can still understand each other.

@TannerSwett Like new england and new orleans?

@AndyD273 "agender trans masculine" - what does that mean? I thought agender meant not-trans and also not-masculine?

@AndyD273 Well, the thing about English is that although the vowels are extremely different between different accents, the consonants are almost the same.

@Mithrandir24601 I don't pretend to understand that level of crazy. I'm just wondering why identifying as hufflepuff is necessary, and if we're going to be forced to make allowances for imaginary house groups in the future.

Who ever said it's "necessary"? If I'm trying to write a short description of myself, I might think that "Hufflepuff" is accurate and concise.

6:00 PM
I was going to describe it as juvenile and immature.
But I came to those books late, and they hold up less the more I think about them
Also, I am coming to despise labeling people, and making up new labels seems like the wrong direction. It just causes more division and fighting.
Having different houses was the worst mistake that the founders ever made.

I think putting "Hufflepuff" in your Twitter bio seems a little silly, and I don't see anything wrong with being a little silly in a Twitter bio.

I suppose
Unless you want to do anything professional with your life.
I'd definitely remove something like that before graduating HS.

We've got different standards, I guess.

@AndyD273 So, apparently it's (agender trans masculine) a thing (If not overly clearly worded to me) - someone 'identifying' themselves as Hufflepuff would be... Extremely confusing, to say the least (It's a fictional house, after all), but I don't see any problems with putting it in a Twitter profile or anything - it's essentially saying "I'm a fan of HP and feel like I'm most like these people" or something, I suppose?

A social profile is a part of your identity, and can break your career pretty easily. Best to avoid having one, or barring that make it represent the image you want the world to see. It's like not getting something tattooed across your forehead. It might seem like a fun idea at the time, but eventually the tequila will wear off.
Just my opinion. I like star wars, but I'd never identify as a jedi either. It shows a detachment from reality.
On a side note, once the meritocracy has been overthrown, I'm going to try my hand at submitting some fixes to some of the problems... Guarantee my code to at least work 20% of the time with few bugs.

6:13 PM
@TannerSwett I see both sides here - it depends what you want to do with your life - if you want to be a serious businessperson, then putting 'Hufflepuff' as part of your profile maybe isn't a great idea, but if you're, I dunno, a children's TV presenter, then why not?

@Mithrandir24601 Waiter, cashier, or a liberal arts major?

@AndyD273 Yeah, sure, sounds about right :P

@Mithrandir24601 Actually, I need a spot check. I'm a little tired. Am I coming across as mean? I'm not trying to be

So they thought Lich in the bio was a joke until the skeleton in the business suit walked in for an interview.

@Joshua At least it was smart enough to dress in a suit. Shows good form.

6:22 PM
@AndyD273 I don't think so, whatever that's worth - if someone comes along and says, "that's not appropriate", then we stop and listen to them, but at the minute I personally don't see any problems with the conversation
@Joshua HELLO. NICE TO MEET YOU. I'M DEATH AND I'M HERE FOR AN INTERVIEW

@Mithrandir24601 Reaping doesn't pay like it used to. Not many people do the whole coins for the ferryman tradition any more, and it hasn't risen with inflation.

@AndyD273 Poor Death :/ Busier job than ever as well

Well if he's not getting paid enough he should start sending them back.

"These are some odd coins. How did you get them?"
"IN PAIRS USUALLY."

@Mithrandir24601 WHY AN INTERVIEW? SITTING ACROSS THE TABLE ASKING QUESTIONS DOESN'T DEMONSTRATE THAT I CAN DO THAT JOB. WHAT IS THE POINT?
I like that Pratchett is able to use Death to explore the disconnects between what people think and what actually is.
Hi @AndyD273
Hi @Mithrandir24601

6:29 PM
Hey @Green

@Green Death is most definitely one of my favourite characters so far, although I'm only a few books into the series

@Mithrandir24601 Death and the Mac Nac Feegle are my favorites by far.

Ash
@AndyD273 That is gold, I must remember that one for an angel of death character some time.

Death is definitely one of the standouts. The others (IMHO) are Vimes, Vetinari, and Moist.
@Ash I wish I could take credit. :)

Ash
@Mithrandir24601 Wait until you meet Susan. Vimes, Vetinari, and Granny Weatherwax arer probably my favourites.
@AndyD273 Which book is that one from, I don't remember it.

6:35 PM
@Ash I want to say it's Reaper Man. But it might be the first Death book, when he buys a curry.

@AndyD273 Thud! is I think Vimes at his best. The Guarding Dark and Summoning Dark give me chills.

Yup yup

Ash
@Green I think Thud is my favourite story, although Thief of Time ranks highly too.

@Ash Looked it up. The book was Mort
I'd think using a Pratchett quote in a story I was writing would be a cool homage, so long as it fit

@AndyD273 I like Death's explanation for a rearrangement that comes at the end of the book. Someone asked "How did it end up this way?" Death says something like "I had a talk with the Gods. We have an understanding."

Ash
6:41 PM
@AndyD273 Yup that' be why, I haven't actually read Mort, and Reaper Man only once.

@Ash they are probably my go to books when I need something light and fun in between heavy/serious stories.

Ash
@AndyD273 Where as I read Carpe Jugulum, Thief of Time and/or Monstrous Regiment if I want entertainment without exertion.

Currently reading a true account of a guy that escaped from North Korea... I think I'm going to need some fun when I'm done.
@Ash I just pick one at random. I have all of them, and all seem to work for the purpose

6:58 PM
@AndyD273 I like the scene where Death plays a dice game with a guy in a back alley in Ank Morpork. Death loses but the guys attempting to kill Death are stubbornly forbidden by their brains from acknowledging who is standing in front of them.
The one guy you can't ever beat.

Q: What should we give Cort Ammon for being the first WB user to break the 6-digit rep barrier?

JBHI think it's more than impressive that Cort Ammon broke the 6-digit rep barrier with a score of 100,169 as of this writing. He broke the barrier sometime yesterday or this morning. Stack Exchange probably doesn't throw parties for such feats, but I'm thinkin' it deserves some note. WB's been a...

@Green Death and Chaos vs The Auditors was a fun one too. All the other characters in the Death books are pretty good; Susan, Mort, Death of Rats... And he's also good for a joke or two with his cameos.

Ash
@AndyD273 That's Thief of Time, which I started again yesterday.

7:16 PM
@Ash That's right. They sometimes run together. I kinda wish that he'd explored the other cosmic beings in other stories, instead of that just that one short scene, but oh well.

Q: Science fiction and space

Fadel Hossam ManourWhat if in the future a country that has an advanced space program used the stars and planets to guide their nuclear armed ICBMs? For exemple they study a distant solar system for long enought to predict it's orientation minute by minute and after that they use a telescope and and a computer tha...

Would this be on-topic for WB.SE? The folk at Engineering.SE have closed it an suggested to migrate it.

@NickAlexeev Hmm... To me, this reasonably looks on topic, yes, although it might be helpful if we knew more about what sort of technology they have (e.g. for a start, are they able to see the missile, how well etc.)

1 hour later…
10:54 PM
hey there @Mithrandir24601 and @Fabby

11:20 PM
@AndyD273 Good. It's the only reasonable response.
Otherwise, they'll just continue this bad behavior.
