I've been meaning to ask..
@EriktheOutgolfer what exactly is outgolfing?

10:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek hahaha, do you know what code golf is?

vaguely
basically solving a problem as small as possibke

Q: Why is there no schools of meta physical art?

SonnyHD1080pSo my question is direct as much as it can be. Why is there no meta physical schools? We by now know that art of kinetic abilities and telepathic abilities are available to every one and only things that differs from aprentice to aprentice is how much time they need for certain technique. By now ...

wut?

@JourneymanGeek and keeping your golfing in the code
and outgolfing means for someone to outperform you at this using the same programming language

Hey @HDE226868 (i.e. Mr. History of Science), do you happen to know off-hand how long we've known about atmospheric refraction? I was going down a path that started from "why doesn't the equinox have equal day and night?", ended up at a question about Jewish law, and wondered how far back there might even be sources on this.

@MonicaCellio According to this paper, it first came to the knowledge of Western 'scientists'/philosophers in the 2nd century BC
But at that day and age, more Eastern 'scientists' were ahead in a good number of things (especially in the Arabic countries), so I wouldn't be surprised if other places knew about it long before
Unfortunately, because of some rather um, unhelpful people, many of the knowledge contained in those ancient libraries is now lost :'( so if you find a Jewish source that suggests they knew about it, it's more than possible they did

@Mithrandir24601 whoa. Thanks!

@MonicaCellio You're welcome :) Although I wish I had a proper answer to such an interesting question

@Mithrandir24601 asking that question a couple hours before Sukkot starts (for me) means it won't get a lot of attention for a couple days, but I wanted to get it out there while I had all the info from my Google research handy.

9:29 PM
hey there @MonicaCellio and @Mithrandir24601

@Shalvenay Rytsas! Just watching Yuzuru Hanyu figure skating :)

how're things going?

About to go start dinner, actually. Talk to you later.

I'll ask again here: Why is this a duplicate?

Q: What impact would a giant alien spaceship orbiting Earth have on our planet?

Orpheus1844I'm talking about a massive ship, let's say half the mass of the Moon, within the Hill sphere, so that is not snatched up by the Sun and can orbit around Earth. Assuming it's positioned as far as it can possibly be and starts orbiting around our planet, what would the effects be on our planet?...

It's quite clearly different from the passing asteroid question - you could plug in the numbers in the same equation to get more numbers, but that's only half the answer. If you want to take the same idea of 'plugging in the numbers makes it a duplicate', then why aren't there numerous physics/science questions also marked as duplicate - those equations can solve virtually every classical orbital force problem...
(I'd also love to know how the conclusion to the accepted answer in said duplicate is drawn, but that's for a different day)

WHOOO!!! 100k rep!

That's been a goal for like... 2 years running
