I feel that the tag discussed here should be burned, and I wrote a comment about it, but feel I could have expressed myself better. Can anyone see the point I'm trying to make and hopefully write an answer phrasing it better?

I hit 200 upvotes on a (bad) SO question:

Q: How can I read inputs as integers?

Hosch250Why does this code not input integers? Everything on the web says to use raw_input(), but I read on Stack Overflow (on a thread that did not deal with integer input) that raw_input() was renamed to input() in Python 3.x. play = True while play: x = input("Enter a number: ") y = input(...

Apparently it's not bad, because at least 200 people found it helpful
Meaning that there were a lot of other people who had the same question, found yours, and were happy enough by it that they upvoted it

@Mithrandir24601 Not a ton compared to a mod. I can't edit messages outside the normal timeout period for my own messages, I can't technically delete messages, but I can migrate them to other rooms, meaning I can migrate them to the "trash" room.
Room owner menu:
schedule events
control access
manage feeds
timeout
move messages
and of course set tags and room description

You should be able to kick disruptive users, too, right?

@HDE226868 That's timeout?
And Control Access?

Nah, that's different.

OK. Well, timeout is usually good. Mods need to kick, whatever that is.

Kicking a user punts them out of the room for something like 30 seconds. It's gentler than a chat suspension, and only applicable to the one room.

1:31 PM
Then what's timeout?

@HDE226868 If I can I haven't figured out how. Timeout shuts the room down so no one can talk, and control access lets me chose who can read and write if the room was private, which it isn't. It could potentially be useful. This Hosch person keeps messing with my story...
;)

2:45 PM
@AndyD273 I almost posted a retcon last night to make a full-blown flashback, actually. Interesting you should bring that up.
Also, worked on my story a bit more. I have a page done now (same link as before).
Something seems wrong, though.
I'm not sure what (is it that I'm telling the story rather than being the character in the story?).

@Hosch250 I was kind of leading it into that with the ellipsis at the end of the previous chapter. Like "here is how it happened..." [flashback to events that happened]. But maybe it doesn't need to be that detailed if it's just: Walk walk walk. Hey, baby fire slug, lets weave a basket. We have a new pet. walk walk walk...

Whoosh! "OUCH! I guess it scrapped the mud off with that wiggling it was doing. And now we either need a new basket or just let the thing go..."

Right. That's why the note has a question mark at the end. It could possibly make the story better, or it could be a long boring process...
@Hosch250 what's a burned blanket?

3:03 PM
A blanket that was scorched by the fire from the car crash.
BTW, ejection seats are NOT standard on these things. Cyrus customized the car extremely heavily.

Do you have the story plotted out any, or just winging it?

Mostly winging it.
I had a semi-plot, but forgot most of it.
I need to add more human women, develop Heather and Simon a bit...

@Hosch250 I think it might be that things are happening super fast? Like, exposition, fixing car, exposition, in car, exposition, car crashes, page 2.

So, basically, I need to slow the story down a bit?
I think I can do that.

And some of it can happen in editing, once you get the plot out. Then what you have kind of becomes a synopsis with some dialog.

3:08 PM
Trying to decide if Cyrus' wife gets killed, or if she manages to survive.
I'm leaning toward killed simply because so many are killed the odds are pretty low of the whole family surviving.

Did you see that post with the video about the story circle method that Dan Harmon uses?

Yeah, but I haven't watched it yet. It was posted when I was at work, and then I forgot to go back to it.

Ah. It might be fun to plug some of what you have into it, just to see if it helps any. It might not

I think I need to rename Cyrus and Nigel too. I don't like those names too much.
Especially Nigel.

They aren't too bad. At first I thought it was Nirgal, one of the many protagonists from the Red Mars series.

3:11 PM
LOL, not read that.
I do like the name city name Otita, though.
And Heather and Simon.

@Hosch250 Good stories, but LONG. It really feels like reading a James Michener book about mars.
Do you have access to Netflix?

No.

Ah. Well, if you do eventually, it might be interesting to watch the movie How It Ends, not because it has anything at all to do with AI, but is about a couple guys trying to deal with finding family and not having any idea whats happening

Thanks.

Ironically, the one complaint that people have about the movie How It Ends, is that the ending doesn't really tell you how it ends...
:46141508 Are you having a stroke?

3:17 PM
Is @HDE226868 on drugs?

No, that was meant to be typed elsewhere.
Always check where your cursor is.

I know. I can only have 2-3 chatrooms open at once.

@HDE226868 Ah, and you are sure you haven't been eaten by a giant spider?

@AndyD273 I'm reasonably certain.

Just had to check. Was spookily close to the Keyboard Mash xkcd...
Well, not really
but it did remind me of it

3:59 PM
@AndyD273 Not sure how to read this:
> I'm glad you aren't a tyrant that only does ethical things. I was a little worried about helping a tyrant do horrible, unethical things.
You are glad he does unethical things, but have qualms about helping him do so?

He isn't a tyrant, and only does ethical things. I was worried that he might be a tyrant that does horrible, unethical things.

@Hosch250 I think that needs a little rephrasing.

> I'm glad you aren't a tyrant that only does ethical things.
I think you mean "I'm glad you are a tyrant that only does ethical things."

But he's not a tyrant. It's right in the username
@NotATyrant <--- See, it says it right there.

Hmm. That sentence reads to me like "I'm glad you aren't (a tyrant that only does ethical things)."

4:07 PM
Yes, I probably left a comma out.

Whatever. I think I get the meaning now.
Either way, isn't dismembering the alchemist with spoons just a little unethical?
Even if he did turn the guy's wife into a spoon...
I'd just defeat him with spoonerisms.

@Hosch250 There is a lot of stuff we say in here that's really weird when taken out of context.

LOL.

@Hosch250 Nope, it's a totally ethical kingdom that has ethical rules. It's in the question.

Oh, it's sarcasm :)

4:09 PM
They are even going to have a trial after the dismembering. See, justice!

LOL.
Ahh, I know what to do.
Sharpen the edge of the wife-spoon and whack off his head.
Let's hope he remembers how to do the spoon command, so he can get out of it.

@Hosch250 I'm a little scared to do a search for "wife-spoon" at work... please describe this utensil.

@AndyD273 A very large spoon made from the protagonist's wife.
It has the same mass as the wife.
So, imagine swinging a 75-150 pound spoon around (assuming the wife wasn't ridiculously obese considering medieval times).

I wonder if she prefers to be the big spoon or little spoon?

/shrug
She'll get her revenge when she's used to dismember the guy.

4:15 PM
Was his wife a pigeon?

No.
She was just normal, and got turned into a spoon too.
The alchemist really was a loser.

@AndyD273 The OP of the original spoon question asked another question about the protagonist's wife being turned into a spoon but deleted it after it was closed.

On the whole, I sympathize with him too.

@Gryphon Ah, missed that one
One battle spoon

LOL.
I swear there's nothing new under the sun.

4:21 PM
Then throw on your spoon battle helmet...
I tried searching for a spoon horse, but the internet failed me.

4:37 PM
Hey, I hear they found Egypt's second sphinx!
Here's hoping the construction equipment didn't damage it.

@Hosch250 Wait, really?
Link?

Yeah!
It's all over the news. Just 8-hours old.
They were repairing a road and dug it up.
It's currently slightly unearthed and they are bringing in the experts to finish it.

Now is a good time for archeologists.
They'll probably have hundreds down there within a week.
If not thousands.
I'd never heard of the second one, but now I hear there were rumors.
Where did the rumors originate?

It would be cool if this one had its nose

4:46 PM
@AndyD273 Man that website is a mess.

Yeah. Seems like the British papers got the story first. Guess we'll have to wait for someone more respectable to pick it up.

@Hosch250 For a moment there I thought you were going to say it was made of spoons.
Not even joking

That's not an unreasonable reaction all things considered.

Plot twist, they'll be using spoons to excavate so as to avoid damaging the statue

@AndyD273 They actually will be.
At least when they get close to it.
They might use heavier equipment to dig a trench around it.

4:51 PM
@Hosch250 Oh, I'm sorry, did you think that was a joke? ;)

Odds are they'll use hand shovels, though, for a long distance away.
@AndyD273 Yeah, because of the "plot twist" part.

@Hosch250 Well, it was half a joke

Hey people (and eldritch abominations): When you are out and about on the site can you help reinforce the new help page information. Primarily asking you to remind old users (and tell new users) to include context and constraints in questions. If you can't vote on them please flag. Its going to be a bit of an adjustment period.

@AndyD273 Wouldn't it be weird if it did have its nose but instead of a human nose it had a pig nose or something and then we would all have to figure out ancient Egyptian hog fetishes?

@James AAAAAAAA! I'm going to have nightmares tonight :P

@Hosch250 Well I think my work is done here.

5:00 PM
LOL.

@James shudder

@James Breaking news: Confirmed! Pigmen used to rule Egypt says archeologists.

They already had dog and bird headed men in their mythology...its really not that big a stretch.

Then it would turn out part of the statue was missing, and it was really just a lion holding a wriggling pig in its mouth.
And ALL the textbooks would have to be rewritten.

@AndyD273 As long as they aren't zombie pigmen...

5:03 PM
@Gryphon Those guys are jerks.
...if you're a jerk first.

Yeah, but if you're a jerk first, then they're all jerks :(

and by being a jerk I of course mean killing them with swords.

@James Rifles don't count? That's nice.

@Hosch250 We're talking about minecraft. There aren't any rifles.

Oh.
That reference flew over my head.

5:04 PM
@James Don't even need swords... pickaxe, shovel, snowball... whatever. Vengeful little guys

@Hosch250 Yeah, zombie pigmen are one of the creatures in the game. If you hit one, all the rest within site will rush to attack you.

Cool.
I think I need to get it. What does it cost?

@Hosch250 About 25 bucks (I think). My little brother has it, which is why I know what zombie pigmen are.

Hmm.

Yep, it's $26.95 (US)

5:06 PM

Sorry to interrupt, but wasn't there a meta question once about advertising our sandbox on the main site?

Bought it for the kids. You can get mobile versions for cheaper too. The Java version ($26) also comes with a key for the windows 10 version.

JBH
That's the guy. No wonder I couldn't find it searching for "sandbox advertisement." What's going on with that? Is there a way we can post something (like a lovely large graphic) on the main site? The sandbox needs more than a chorus of comments.

We can feature it like PPCG and IPS do.
Or a Community Promotion Ad

5:11 PM
@JBH We don't have a community promotion ad for it. If you want, feel free to design one and put it as an answer here. It'll be put up automatically once it hits 5 or more upvotes.

Q: Community Promotion Ads - 2018

Grace NoteIt's almost February in 2018, which isn't supposed to be the proper time to cycle these, but for this year it'll be once again, so we'll be refreshing the Community Promotion Ads for this year now! What are Community Promotion Ads? Community Promotion Ads are community-vetted advertisements tha...

JBH
Deal. I'll bow out and think up a couple of metaphorical spaghetti blobs to throw at the wall. Looking through that first link, it's been discussed before. What's the belief about what's holding it back?

@JBH What exactly? Featuring or a community ad?

JBH
Exactly: why has no method of permanently advertising the sandbox ever been implemented?

@Gryphon 6 votes, but I'll happily upvote it :)

5:14 PM
Basically up until now it would have been mean to advertise the Sandbox more because new users would think "Cool, I'll try that!" only to realize that they couldn't...

Somehow I'm no longer surprised that California is one of the dumbest states. Free college!

JBH
Duh... that's a good point.

Now everyone gets their chance to try crack and LSD.
@Secespitus Problem now resolved, though :)

JBH
OK, thanks folks. Time to pretend I have an artistic molecule in my body.

@JBH A sandcastle!

Q: Sandbox promotion and awareness

JDługoszI see Codegolf is running ads for its sandbox. Why don’t we do that? If making ads, note that the required dimensions are 600x500 px (or 300x250).

@Secespitus Renan's answer to that is good. Am I allowed to post it in the community ads for 2018?

Welcome to the Factory Floor @NervousEnergy! Please note that you need at least 20 reputation to talk in the chat. Of course, feel free to hang out here and just read the random discussions taking place here until you've reached that. :D Have fun!
@Gryphon I'd post a comment under his answer and tell him that you think he should post it in the community ad post.

@Secespitus Will do.

@Gryphon So with that magical metal question... At first I thought it was POB too, but after thinking about it a little I'm not so sure any more. The metals chosen should have either have some cultural significance or logical consistency. Just picking four elemental metals at random doesn't work.
Hey @AngelPray, how goes it today?

@AndyD273 I realize that there are some criteria: "due to historical associations, traditional uses, etc". However, I don't think these are sufficiently objective to judge answers by.
For example, historical associations can easily change by culture, and it's probably possible to dig up some kind of traditional use somewhere for pretty much any reasonably common metal.
@AndyD273 Also, it appears that someone agrees with me, as the question now has 2 close votes.
Also, completely unrelated to everything else, what happened to the Fortnightly Topic Challenges? It seems like #12, on Humans was the last one, but it doesn't say anything about why they weren't continued. I wasn't here yet when they occurred, so I'm not familiar with the backstory.

5:47 PM
@Gryphon I think it was a way to promote questions from certain fields in a general attempt to get more questions on the site. Many small sites have such or similar challenges.
16
A: Should we end the topic challenges?

Monica CellioThe need has dropped off, which may be part of why the interest has dropped off. We should stop regular topic challenges. But if, occasionally, somebody feels motivated to call for a challenge, drawing from the proposals that were collected or doing something new, that should be ok. Keep the i...

If you have an interesting idea you can just create one. See the (relative) recent alien geometry challenge for an example.

Okay. I was just interested in why/how they ended.

6:27 PM
@Gryphon They ended mainly because they weren't needed any more. The organic throughput reached a high enough level that we didn't need to trigger ideas for people. But like @Secespitus said a few people have tried them out more recently, to what degree of success I am not sure.

@Gryphon I agree with what Monica wrote - that they're no longer needed, especially since participation dropped off. I haven't been involved with the one or two revivals we've had since, so I don't know how those went down.
I do wonder if there's the potential for them to showcase topics that don't get asked about a lot. For instance, a -week could be interesting.
Also . . . it's been a couple years since we finished them; the community's changed. Maybe the fresh faces will be more interested; who knows.

I wouldn't mind seeing a challenge.
It'd be interesting to see what sorts of MacGuffinite people come up with.

, , , and could all use some love.

@HDE226868 would be good. I feel like could run into issues with TB/POB, and OT:TSB questions from newer users.

@Gryphon Good point.
Come to think of it, I worry about bringing in a lot of . . . misconceptions about how relativity works.

6:41 PM
@HDE226868 And then you can go and write a wonderful answer about how it actually does work!

I like your idea.

@HDE226868 It could be an interesting way to break in new users who haven't had anything to ask about yet. IIRC my early questions when I was a newbie were for the challenges. And it's a high percentage because I don't have a ton of questions

Would you guys mind if I wrote a meta post to start a challenge?

@James There were 5 new questions in the tag in the time it was featured (end of January to end of February). 3 from the user that proposed the challenge. Not sure how that compares to the older challenges. A cursory glance suggests had around half as many new questions as other tags generated during their challenges in double the time. But it's a difficult topic, so not really sure how to rate the success.

And, more importantly, would @HDE or another mod feature it in the sidebar.

6:50 PM
never had a wide userbase, IIRC - mostly a few people. I'm not surprised it didn't do well.

@HDE226868 That was probably the reason the user suggested the topic for a challenge.

@Secespitus Yeah. It was PyRulez, right?

Yeah

@Gryphon I'd be okay with it.
I'm reading through the unused suggestions now.
Oh, and assuming it doesn't get shot down, yes, we'd feature it.

@HDE226868 Thank-you. I feel like being featured would make a huge difference in the amount of activity.

@HDE I have posted the challenge here

Q: Topic Challenge: Space-Colonization

GryphonI propose a fortnight-long space-colonization topic challenge, which will begin today, August 10th, and finish on August 24th. Most sci-fi stories feature humans in space. However, manned missions are currently in decline in the real world. Machines can often perform the same functions human...

7:28 PM
I am not sure if the featured tag will work. There are already too many featured things currently. Do we still need the featured tag on the mod announcement?

@HDE could you perhaps remove the tag from the newly elected moderator announcement?

@Secespitus @Gryphon Done.

@HDE226868 Thanks

@HDE226868 Merci

@JBH Uh. Um. Interesting design . . . .
Upvoted to try to get it further
It's currently 6 upvotes to reach the threshold, yes?

7:43 PM
@FoxElemental That's what the corresponding "question" from a CM says.

@FoxElemental Yeah, it's an automatic thing

Ah. Now I see

JBH
@FoxElemental, graphics can be changed. Is there anything that bothers you?

(or well, score of 6, as opposed to 6 upvotes)

@JBH No. It's just a little funny-looking.
Makes me wonder exactly why a self-operating napkin has to be so complicated
@Aify Oh you're back! Stay!

7:46 PM
@JBH I'm not such a fan of the yellow colouring in the wording and the person sitting at the table looks a bit rough around the edges (literally) and a bit too cluttered for my tastes

JBH
@FoxElemental 😁 Rube Goldberg was famous for inventing crazy machines that were as useless as possible. In context, some of our questions can use a little ironing out.

@JBH Is it the right size though?

JBH
@Mithrandir24601, you've two issues. I can increase the feathering on the image to smooth out the edges, but cluttered is in the eye of the beholder. Should I submit a second, simpler design?

Also, the clickthrough link will need to be updated once a new sandbox is posted

JBH
@FoxElemental, The OP post states 300x250, which it is. The larger images are 2X, which is permitted (though I admit I don't know why).

7:48 PM
Unless you change the link to the list of all Sandboxes

@JBH Dunno - depends what other people think :P One actual potential problem is that the image doesn't look like it's the right size in comparison with the others

@JBH ah.

JBH
@FoxElemental, I'd vote to use the list of all sandboxes, a TOC that will last forever.

@JBH ahh, OK

@JBH agreed. Could you change the clickthrough?

JBH
7:49 PM
Do we have the page? What's the URL. It's a trivial change.

Q: Sandbox for Proposed Questions 2014-2017

ArtOfCodeThis sandbox got a little full, so we've created some more. You should still link to this one as we will update it whenever a new one is created. Current Sandbox: Sandbox for Proposed Questions Previous Sandboxes: Sandbox for Proposed Questions 2017-2018 Sandbox for Proposed Questions 201...

There^
It has a list
that's updated constantly

JBH
We need a better one that that. It's marked as a duplicate, is titled for 2017, is labeled as INACTIVE, and doesn't have all the clarifications of the "current sandbox." Do you want to take that on or should I?

You please

@HDE226868 That seems life a riff on Shark Week but with more gamma radiation.

@James I intended it as a reference to Pulsar Week, but that might have gone over people's heads.

@HDE226868 Yeah...didn't know that was a thing.

@James That makes you normal. Normal-ish.

@HDE226868 Oooh, I'd maybe have a question I could answer in there somewhere...

@Mithrandir24601 Take a look through the ones we already have. . .

@HDE226868 yeah, if it were a topic challenge though
(unless that tag is itself, a black hole)

A tag that eats other tags?

@HDE226868 You can't see anything that's in the tag/anything (i.e. any information) that gets asked in that tag gets 'lost'

I'll keep as a topic challenge idea in my back pocket. Could be interesting.
