(found out later that it was a tie and one of the managers liked me more and the other one the other one...

Sounds normal.

There’s often some kind of “deal” going on, if only a “you pick this one, I’ll pick the next”.

We had a similar scenario recently in one of our neighboring teams. And substitute for the product owner (leaving by the end of the year) got hired, started the job and left after only two weeks.
