1:10 AM
Just won my first game of Alterac Pass.
Also, got Tychus in the loot box :)

NICE
Is it fun? Haven't got a chance to try it yet>

1:43 AM
hey

hey @bruglesco how are you?

okay - a little under the weather
How bout you?

Pretty good, been watching Monty Python's Flying Circus to pass time

You at work? almost quitin time if Im right

Yes 8 minutes!

1:52 AM
Nice.
Hows Python going with your lady?

Haven't touched it since the other day, but she's reading some about it
I don't know if just reading about it without coding regularly is going to be effective though
We're going to try a few HackerRank exercises next time we code

I feel like doing both was important for me but I can't say with scientific certainty that that's the case.
It seems most tutorial models code and teach side by side tho
Cya when you get home.

2:44 AM
Home
Got stuck behind a slow train at a crossing

3:13 AM
@bruglesco Yeah, and I like how HR lets you run code in the browser
Good grief it's hot, 29 C / 84 F

4:00 AM
@Phrancis i like that too now that you mention it.
Gn

Bye

9 hours later…
12:57 PM
@Phrancis Yep.

3 hours later…
4:05 PM
heyho

5:03 PM
heyho

5:23 PM

What's the good word today?

The boss is gone on a sales trip, and the devs unanimously decided we need to write the second version of our system.

@Hosch250 That sounds like a big job...?

Yep.

@Phrancis Fixed a bug at work that has been apparently affecting us for more than 1 year.

5:32 PM
@SimonForsberg That's a far less hypothetical outcome than mine :)

@SimonForsberg Nice!

We don't know yet how much it has been affecting our customers. We will see if we get an increase in the solution rate by this change.
I discovered a potential flaw in some code last week where I just looked at the code and realized "But what if this case happens..." so I added some logging to the code which was released on Tuesday, and then I looked at the logs today and saw that yup, sure as hell that happened.

Hmm. Not sure how much you're allowed to share, but I'd be curious to find out more about the bug

5:47 PM
@Phrancis We have a subsystem that we're calling to perform certain operations, but before calling that operation we check in a list from that system to make sure that the operation we want to do (which is passed as a string from our business logic Drools flows) actually exist in the list of allowed operations.
The thing is that we did not handle the case of the operation not existing in the list. So that's where I added the logging. And ta-da, in one case we wanted to perform "doSomethingAbc" but that operation did not exist - however, the operation "doSomethingABC" existed.

Users thought something was being done, but in reality it wasn't.

As in, mismatched casing caused it to not match?

Hey everyone :)

@Marc-Andre Hey! How's it going?

Ok. Eliane is sick again. So gotta take care of that. I hope she'll recover enough for our first weekend of campaign
And you?

5:58 PM
@IvenBach Exactly.
@Phrancis Yup.

@Hosch250 How long is that sales trip?

At least the bugs been spotted. Now it can be fixed.

@skiwi Ending tomorrow.

I hoped today would've lasted langer, some interesting issue occurred right before the day ended
My colleague made a change and I also changed some stuff for a small new feature and we were testing it, and suddenly it crashed (okay, can happen) and then other applications started crashing as well
Turns out w3wp.exe (the IIS hosting process) had used 88 GB of RAM
my colleague for some reason has 64 GB RAM in his pc, the other developers have 16 GB mostly... so that was a surprise

@IvenBach It is already fixed.

6:02 PM
As far as we know we made no changes that could in any way involve high memory allocation... in fact they shouldn't even allocate additional memory apart from the allocation you would expect
@Hosch250 Doesn't sound like enough time for a complete redesign

@Hosch250 Are they planning on getting as far in as they can and then claiming "Ooops too late. Gotta finish we're too far into it"?

@skiwi Holy cow, how in the world did you manage to ramp up memory usage so much?

@Phrancis Exactly my question...
I refuse to believe that it's the code that we wrote, maybe something in the test environment is set up incorrectly

6:26 PM
@IvenBach No. We are going to create a ticket and send it to our boss.

Sounds a lot more reasonable.

@skiwi I thought you were talking about a server when I first read that number

6:58 PM
@Phrancis No, just a desktop environment :D Though this is code that will ultimately run on a server, normally

1 hour later…

They better not FUBAR it.

I've not watched anything recent from Star Trek, I finished TNG and now I started Voyager recently
I skipped Deep Space Nine after a few episodes because I didn't like it very much

I grew up with TNG. I need to watch them as an adult. Any episode with Wesley in it causes me to not want to finish it.
Voyager was pretty good. DS9 I for some reason didn't ever watch. Just on a space station never appealed much to me.

Yeah, it's not a "trek" if you're staying in one place the whole time

8:53 PM
Good point.

9:14 PM
self-note: ./gradlew wrapper --gradle-version=4.8 --distribution-type=bin
I'm tired of having 12 different wrappers in my ~/.gradle/wrapper/dists folder

@SimonForsberg Shadow Jar? ^

ha-ha-ha
That could be a pretty good card for Cardshifter, actually.
@SimonForsberg Correction: ./gradlew wrapper --gradle-version 4.8 --distribution-type bin

@SimonForsberg is CWars the name of the mod/game?

@Phrancis the mod yes, the actual game - almost.

10:09 PM
@SimonForsberg What is the actual game called?

10:38 PM
I've recently completed programming my first Java game. It's an implementation of Snake with 3 difficulty settings and persistent high scores. Would that be a good fit for what you are looking for?

11:07 PM
@CompEng If you are asking about posting to the Code Review site, yes, so long as it works to the best of your knowledge, and you include the code in the question (as oppose to linking to an outside source like Github)

it works to the best of my knowledge, and I posted it today on the code review site.

Q: Java Snake game using MVC with difficulty settings, persistent stats, and sounds

CompEngI completed two intro computer science courses on the basics of Java programming and data structures in university, and have continued to study programming on my own over the past few months. This is my first attempt at programming a playable game. It was written in Java 8 using the MVC design p...

Looks good to me!

I saw the post about playing homemade games on twitch after posting that, so I figured I'd submit it in here.

Every 2 weeks on Saturdays here we play our own games and broadcast on Twitch, see the schedule

perfect, looks like there's one this Saturday

11:15 PM
BTW, I don't know if it's just because I'm on my employer's network, or in the USA, but your playable jar link doesn't work for me

Hmm, what happens when you try to run it?
Or is it the link itself that doesn't work?

Could be blocked by my employer though

Yeah I was able to get to the file download on my phone

Oh OK, must be me then, just making sure

And Hey

11:20 PM
Yea it must be blocked by your employer
If you can find a way to host it that you can access let me know
I can upload it wherever

I'll check it out when I get home later
Whereabouts in Canada are you @CompEng?

Victoria
It's in BC on the west coast

Oh cool! I always wanted visit Victoria and Vancouver! I originally come from Quebec, though I live in Kentucky USA now

Ah Quebec is nice too

If you don't mind the cold too much lol

11:33 PM
I grew up in Alberta, so I'm used to it haha

Step 1: buy cake Step 2: send email saying “cake in room ...” Step 3: “now that you’re all here let’s talk about our build files”
How long have you been coding for?

I took a few courses in university, but I've only started taking it seriously over the past 2-3 months
Got half way through the exercises on exercism.io and decided to take a break from that and write some original code

@CompEng I read exorcism.io, and I was like "what?".

haha

Oh cool, I wouldn't have guessed 2-3 months from your code's complexity

11:44 PM
I've put a lot of time into writing code over the last few months. I feel like that program represents everything I've learned. I'm sure there are a lot of improvements to be made, but it's probably a good representation of where I'm at.

I'm planning on studying computer engineering. I've really developed a passion for computers.

They only do what you tell them to do, even what that wasn't what you meant.

At a glance, it looks good to me (though I'm certainly no Java guru), your naming is clear and consistent, it is quite bulky but Swing code typically is

@Ive
@IvenBach haha
@Phrancis yea it feels like MVC and Swing are a weird mix. I'm sure there are plenty of opportunities for slimming things down.

11:56 PM
Well, Swing is old and clunky, there are much better visual libraries out now, JavaFX for example
