Q: Strategy Game Menus and OOP

bazolaMost of my experience is with Objective-C, so I am relatively new to Java inheritance. I understand that there are concepts such as abstract classes and interfaces, but I am still not totally sure when to use them. I would really like feedback on the structure of my inheritance in the following ...

> Speaking of complexity of human language, this issue seems related to Duga searching for comments on Stack Overflow about Programmers and Code Review and trying to filter them and post them to chat rooms. See https://github.com/Zomis/GithubHookSEChatService/issues/62

Please don't give up on this :) I'm sure it's possible, somehow! And when you have figured it out, you can help me who's dealing with a similar problem ;)
> @Zomis just forget it; why do you think there is a dedicated research group for this at Stanford, no less, which has procuded StanfordNLP?

And if you look at their API, you had better have preliminary, and extensive at that, knowledge of both linguistics and parsing. This subject is of practical implication, surely enough, but it is _hard_.

VERY hard.
> That is what I was afraid of, @fge. I knew this was a research-topic in itself. Was primarily hoping to get some assistance in this difficult quest.

@bazola Y U NO TAG ?
14:02
@SimonAndréForsberg hehe was planning to do that today
@bazola Could you add a little example of how you are using these tables in your code? Especially what code you are calling when you want to show one of them?
14:22
sure
@SimonAndréForsberg i edited in those methods
Thanks.
Will review it, but not now.
@SimonAndréForsberg i appreciate it!
@bazola Do you create instances of BZMenuTable or is it a parent class only ?
14:47
hey
hey @skiwi!
@Marc-Andre parent class only
hey @Marc-Andre
feeling better @skiwi?
not really
14:50
sorry man
@bazola Your question push me to post my first answer of 2015 !
@Marc-Andre thats awesome!
I think I should stay away from looking at code, though it's not easy lol
15:16
I wish it were light outside for 8 more hours now... kinda missed the first 8 lol
15:34
@SimonAndréForsberg one thing I just discovered with libGDX is that in Safari (the default Mac browser), if you make certain changes then libGDX will just fail until the user using Safari empties their browser caches
i moved the images to a different folder, and it worked perfectly in chrome but safari showed a libGDX window that displayed an error about not being able to find the images
@bazola running locally I assume? Caching is always a problem when it comes to browser-development.
@SimonAndréForsberg no not locally
i am still also seeing performance problems even after implementing the fixed time step. Maybe I should only render 30 fps instead of 60? but I'm not sure if that is really the problem at all
15:52
@bazola didn't you mention some performance problems a while ago as well?
right, you did. hence "even after".
What kind of "performance problems"?
@SimonAndréForsberg on some computers it runs really slow, and it doesn't seem to matter how fast the computer is
for example I have a really old windows box with windows xp, runs fine, and i have another quad core machine with windows 7, runs super slow
16:05
id be curious to know how it runs for you as well pixelpocalypse.com
seems to run fine for me
<afk>
hmm. the only thing I can think of is that the machine in question is the machine I use to interface with the server.. i don't see why that should make a difference though. Maybe java needs updating? lol
16:39
@bazola are you using different browser ?
16:52
@Marc-Andre not between those computers, most of my testing has been with google chrome
they could be different versions of chrome though, but I would imagine that the XP box has an older version
How does libgdx runs in the browser ? JS, Java applet somethign else ?
unfortunately I'm not sure exactly, but I think it runs some kind of Java VM behind the scenes
17:09
I don't think so.. the browser is not supposed to do that, (unless it's an applet) or an extention I think.
well it is also using GWT
AJAX and JavaScript (from my quick read)

hey
hey @Phrancis!
Just stopping to say hi, I'm actually going for a nap. Finally done with colonoscopy. Haven't been this tired/groggy in a while
20:17
@Marc-Andre @bazola JavaScript totally.
I don't understand how a new browser and machine could perform poorly compare to an old machine since it runs with JavaScript.
Unless the server is not the same... that would change a lot of thigns!
20:50
Hiya @SimonAndréForsberg , @skiwi did you hear from Unihedro?
in Java on Stack Overflow Chat, 8 hours ago, by Unihedro
I'm considering finalizing a bit and put up a private beta so people of interest or curiousity can help without me having to post the crappy code and throw everything around again, but it's not that functional yet
cc ^^ and following
@Vogel612 is it about the JavaExchange-stuff?
21:05
@Marc-Andre its definitely the same server, same internet connection, both PCs connecting to a server in the next room
actually I tried firefox on that machine and it ran fine
And chrome has difficulties ?
yeah
unless it's x64/x32 architecture problem I don't see what it could be
@bazola In what way does it "run slow"?
@SimonAndréForsberg when you hit a button, it takes a second or more to see a response
21:16
@bazola that is extremely strange and not something I have encountered. And it only happens on certain computers?
slow keyboard? ;)
@SimonAndréForsberg lol
yeah pretty much only this one computer, and only in chrome
only in chrome... that's interesting
How is the performance in chrome on that computer when browsing other websites? And when playing other JS-based games?
or other LibGDX based games
try Pentacolor on it, for example.
I've never noticed a problem until now, its been a a couple years since I installed windows on it
ok
If it makes you feel any better, I don't think that your code is the problem.
well, pentacolor runs fine. I just cleared the cache and stuff and there was no change. verified that everything still runs fast in firefox. the only thing that I can think of is that i have an extension for netbeans and for jet brains installed in chrome
@SimonAndréForsberg i suppose! hehe
21:25
@bazola but if Pentacolor runs fine in the browser, why wouldn't your game?
Are you using superDev mode btw? If you are, try creating a real distribution and test it on that.
@SimonAndréForsberg no I am doing :html:dist exclusively now
ok, good.
or... not good, because then I don't know what else you can try.
@SimonAndréForsberg well I've spent enough time working on it for now, next would be reinstalling chrome on that system and removing those extensions
yeah, that's something worth trying

@SimonAndréForsberg nice!

Re-hello
hey @Phrancis
What's the good word today?
@bazola I didn't get a chance to try your game the other day (Friday?) are you still running it on your server?
@Phrancis yeah www.pixelpocalypse.com
its not very resource intensive so I will probably try to keep it up permanently
Does it work better on Chrome or Safari on Mac?
safari works pretty well for me
I'm definitely not afraid of criticism so I would appreciate any feedback including negative
I just updated it today to remove all the bugs I could find and improve performance so now is a good time to give it a try
22:39
Have to say that one ^^ has me stumped.
@Phrancis yeah that one is really tough
Perhaps I need a purple somewhere...
22:55
@bazola Do you have a place to submit bugs other than just telling you in chat?
23:07
@Phrancis I know, I am evil :)
@Phrancis How many unique-symbols is there in each of the symbol-groups?
If there are five symbols, you will need a purple. If there are four symbols, you probably only need yellow.
Makes sense, didn't think of it that way
@Phrancis you could submit issues here I suppose, or send them to the email address that I have on the website github.com/bazola/walkaboutMMO
@Phrancis also if you want to cheat and get the answer for that puzzle, I did post a picture of the solution the other day :)
23:25
Cool. I think I get the game logic so far, though it didn't work in Safari (said something about updating Flash player?)
@Phrancis strange. LibGDX doesn't use Flash...
Do the different types of surface/terrain tiles yield different amount of resources, or is it mostly for what type of building you can place?
@Phrancis right now the different terrains just limit what buildings you can place. all buildings will produce just 1 resource per update with the exception of Banks, which provide interest based on the amount of gold you deposit
Ahh ok interesting so far
23:49
Are castles and forts strictly for region influence?
@Phrancis yeah, but one other benefit is that only certain buildings are tracked by the Building List menu in the map, so if you build a Fort or Castle it will also show up on that list. Looking at that list is one way to find your way back to your regions when you explore too far and can't remember where they are
Ahh ok
I have a few ideas that I think would improve the experience, mostly visual things
sure, i would love to hear them
A lot of them probably are a bit limited by how small of a screen you have to work with
But the simplest would be, IMO when you bring up the build menu, it would be nice if it showed in the building cost if you don't have enough of a resource (like make the number red maybe)
Another thing is the [Map] [Menu] [ ? ] buttons basically hide the 4 left most tiles which could be a bit annoying if you built things there or if a capital city was there
definitely both good ideas
23:59
RELOAD!
[retailcoder/Rubberduck] 1 commit. 1 opened issue. 2 issue comments.
[Vincentyification/JavaBot‌] 3 issue comments.
my intention is to make it so that you have to tap on the screen in order to reveal the UI, or at least those 3 buttons, however I could not figure out how to make that work well with the swipe to move controls because swiping registered a touch
One last thing, when you bring up the Trade menu in a city or trading post, you can't see your own resources very easily, if at all, to see how much of each you have. This might just be a matter of making the trade menu a bit smaller
