20:00
@jippie probably not.
If only I had the guts to leave and head for Santiago
@Kortuk Or maybe I should get that girl to find a good job here, so she can take care of my while I spend me time here ;o)
@jippie Ha!
I could not find your profile on the eda board @TonyStewart, do you use a different user name?
@Kortuk I can hear her say "Oh, you are so funny" :o)
yes most people use alias's there but my name is on my profile edaboard.com/member134022.html
@TonyStewart I thought that was the case.
@W5VO I had been to EDA board before also.
@TonyStewart Fun to look around on, I still just think that kind of forum is outdated.
Still some fun questions there.
20:11
judging by the number of those who need help. it is easier to solve than go to great lengths with fancy answers when the assumptions were wrong to begin with
there do not appear to be any "trolls" there either
@TonyStewart We have only had one or two ever.
trolls who prefer to criticize than help or offer suggestions
@TonyStewart The thing is our site is indexed well to help people long term with google. I guarantee ee.se will index higher in google for the same question and answers.
@TonyStewart I think you are allowing yourself to be frustrated with someone disagreeing when the core issue is that there is a communication issue.
yes communication, and management of those
as my Mom used to say.. sometimes it is better to say nothing if you have nothing good to say.. does not apply here
you live longer when you don't worry so much @TonyStewart. Also you'll have more fun ;o)
20:15
@TonyStewart They are giving technical feedback, if someone is just saying negative things the moderators come down hard on that.
What me worry? never
disagree its non technical feedback assuming the person knows what he needs or what else is possible or even what works best from years of experience rather than waste time analyze what does not work unless that is the reason for the academic exercise
if just an academic question no problem
but if needing a "real world " solution for design experience .. then I question the validity of such assumptions to criticize them.. it looks like we are just doing their homework instead of teaching wisdom.. how to analyze and think then solve not eh reverse
@TonyStewart This is how it read to me, he was attempting to learn from a design and wanted some questions about that design answered.
Veni, vidi, vici not ..... vici,vidi, veni
define.. analyze.. spec> then solve.. not solve analyze.. redesign and redo until it works
@TonyStewart That question was worded that way, he did not seem to want design expertise, he seems to want explanation of his points.
I would like an easy circuit to pass sound from Condenser microphone to a small earphone, live
20:20
@Achraf52 Hello
can I ask a small question about microphone and earphone
I have supervised 15 professional engineers and techs and created virtual design teams, I understand overstepping creative boundaries and when to suggest alternatives that avoid failure
speak up ... fire away
@Achraf52 Yes, a few small questions work here, but if it gets serious it should go on the site.
@TonyStewart I understand you have experience, but that does not mean the rules are different for you.
I need a simple circuit to pass sound from CX=ondenser
oops
true just trying to understand the reasons for rules and seeing how socially it works with anxiety in others.. I only get offended if someone pretends to have more experience and only can -ve point my work and say .. he didn't ask for that kind of solution
20:23
@Achraf52 And a common assumption is that we do consumer electronics, just a heads up before you post on the site, design questions are our focus. If we can answer something easily here most people will.
so if I talk on the microphone I can hear myself on the earphone
@TonyStewart In that case the feedback was valid, you did not answer the question at all.
@TonyStewart They were giving feedback on the fact that you were really not answering the question.
disagree.. he was asjing for anything better
@TonyStewart You have said over and over you based that on the answer he wrote, not on the question.
he was a newbie
20:24
@TonyStewart but you can disagree, that is your right*, but you have been downvoted for it.
hello
did anyone understand my question
@Achraf52 you need a circuit to take sound directly from mic to earbud.
he asked that his answer be considered as an addon to his question.. so I disagree again.. it was his question AND request for advice on explaining it or something better
exactly
@TonyStewart So edit his question and improve it based on the answer.
@Achraf52 you are going to need a tiny amp I believe, I rarely play with audio of that style so I am not sure what strength driver is needed, sorry.
20:26
it is possible to do it using transistors ?
@Achraf52 condensor needs amplifier
Kortuk I just got edit credentials after
so not possible at 1st
@TonyStewart you have enough rep to suggest an edit. That is really early.
OK no need to discuss further .. I see you are not going to agree with my request to monitor critics who are negative only and do nothing to be positive or helpful
@Achraf52 1.5V Op Amp rail to rail may work
nice
any limitations Ach?
cost? size?
20:29
@TonyStewart The real issue is that they gave you a comment to explain their downvote, they are attempting to share why it is happening so you can understand what the community expects, you are taking it as negativity which it is not.
is transistors not going to help
I see a downvote is not a negative OK
yes I don't want it to be so big or consume a ton of power
ok any cost?
it is a tiny 1.5 button cell powered device that amplify sound from it's microphone to a big gain and send it to earphones
20:30
@TonyStewart Yes, it is.
it is a negative?
no to spy ear
@TonyStewart Yes, a negative to your answer. The comment given to you is attempting to explain the cause of such a downvote so that you can modify your behavior to avoid it in the future.
I see that as childish behavior and unprofessional considering the experience gapo
so if that is a systemic issue
@TonyStewart I see this as extreme arrogance on your part
but it gives a really big gain, I need a circuit that gives just normal amplification
20:33
@TonyStewart considering your opinions/answers beyond reproach
could be arrogant if you had nothing to back up your experience
@TonyStewart Your experience gap does not entitle you to special treatment. The site is designed such that each question has its own technical answers which are judged based on that. I do not care what someone's experience is when I determine if the answer is right.
@TonyStewart This sentence is not clear.
@TonyStewart even children have the ability to read.
20:34
@Achraf52 You do not need a very large gain, you will need a decent one, to my knowledge there is not more then a gain of 1000 between mic and earbud.
if conideration is blind to recongnizing a PhD from a newbie UG from an experience designer with 35yrs then I understand the variance in perspective
so I need to grab a opamp
where I can buy it
they have special preamps for mics to drive ear buds 60Ω
@Achraf52 Yes, I think you can probably pull it off with a simple op-amp with a gain of 10-100 range. If you use a pot to adjust it you can find what you need.
18 secs ago, by Tony Stewart
they have special preamps for mics to drive ear buds 60Ω
That is what my thought was, I just have never done it.
@Achraf52 They probably have a chip you can buy for just this, but if you have an op-amp that should do the job pretty easy.
It would make agreater solution for hard of hearing people to have 2 mics in cancellation mode to drive ear buds... better than hearing aids
20:36
@TonyStewart Not the hearing aids I have seen. They are far more advanced then this.
@TonyStewart The point is that they asked a question with specific constraints. You ignored one of them, which means that you didn't answer his question.
My friend has one with al the latest EQ for $5K and performance is poor due to near field background noise
@TonyStewart My conclusion was that the person asking the question was not asking a reasonable question, and his stated experience level backs that up.
W5VO the issue is he was self-proclaimed newbie UG and was not aware other solutions existed and saying you must use a 555 is bad form
@TonyStewart You keep returning to experience as a backing for why you should not receive certain treatment, if that is what you are expecting it is not going to happen here. Your answer will be judged on its technical merits, not on your experience, and if you do not answer a question it will receive downvotes.
20:38
@TonyStewart Then THAT is the problem. Plain and simple
so if you support bad form " unnecessary constraints on design" .. go ahead.. but why?
@TonyStewart No one said he must use a 555 in an answer, he did ask questions about using one though, which if I asked a question about a digital output on an MSP430 and you told me how great a PIC's outputs were I would downvote you, it does not matter what experience you have, I did not ask about a PIC.
wrong two did
@W5VO terrible questions are always the source of great contention .
@TonyStewart I don't support bad questions - I CLOSE them. (or at least vote for it).
20:40
I disagree but two frequent users said he must use a 555 and downgraded my answers and vcomments
but you may have your own opinions ok
@TonyStewart Your sentence is hard to understand again, communication is really important for understanding, the user did say he was using a 555 for something and asked about its function.
@TonyStewart @Kortuk He specifically said that he was only interested in 555 answers
@Achraf52, sorry for all the noise here, hope you drop back by, normally we discuss beer and random electronics.
and then askfor anything better
but not worth this level of grief
@TonyStewart This sentence is not clear for me either, what do you mean?
@TonyStewart I think I see what caused the confusion.
> Please feel free to correct or improve me.
That means in SE terms to edit and improve his answer, not write an answer in a completely different space.
So if you see something in his answer that you can edit or improve take the time to do so.
Does that make sense @TonyStewart ?
20:51
@Kortuk I'm not really sure what else there is to do in LR - when I go I'm usually swamped with friend and family obligations
@TonyStewart And this is not meant to be grief, but we are discussing this so something that is a negative experience can be avoided.
@W5VO Ha. I will find things, We are probably going to spend the bulk of our trip in Memphis.
On a brighter note, I had a great couple beers last night
but having a yeti before a trois pistoles makes the trois pistoles too sweet.
@Kortuk I had some cheap beers.
@Kortuk Not too sure about Memphis attractions
and left chat.
Having lots of fun with a simulator ~_~
@W5VO I am sure.
@W5VO Nice save. It is a headache every time.
@atomSmasher I am not sure most of what you were told applies. It sounds like it is slipping under heavy load which I think can be caused by both not driving with a strong enough drive for the torque required or the motor just not handling it.
@atomSmasher Normally a stepper does not have issues like that, but if when you are applying force you are able to get it to slip it is probably a force issue but it could be an undersized motor.
@jippie sorry you got overpowered.
20:57
?
@Kortuk sorry I'm tired. Had a beer. Have no clue what you are referring to.
@jippie your messages were lost in the chat spam
@jippie nothing to worry about then.
@Kortuk I'm having difficulty getting the simulator to give me smooth curves - it seems to be having fine time steps in some areas, but coarse steps in others.
@W5VO hmm, interesting issue.
@Kortuk worrying makes you old ;o) so I try not to
I'm not doing a very good job at it though
20:59
@atomSmasher The reason I suggested asking on the site is so that many of the users very knowledgeable in the area will vote and give you an idea of what advice you can follow.
@jippie ha.
why is my cat walking around with an 1N4148!?
@jippie !?!?!?!
@jippie One day I heard the cats playing loudly, they were knocking my radiation badge all over the place!
@Kortuk your radiation badge is company issue, I paid for this diode myself!!
@jippie The badge is A LOT of paperwork to cover for those though. It is a nation thing.
I believe I paid at least €2 / 500pcs = 0.4 ct for it!
@Kortuk you should make backups of your paperwork (said the IT guy)
21:03
@jippie Puts a new meaning to cat's cat whisker
@W5VO at first I thought is was a whisker indeed
@jippie The paperwork is for losing something that you are required to have all employees track. I must be able to prove i took a safe amount of radiation as a radiation worker.
@W5VO I did not catch the joke at first, then I really laughed.
@W5VO but whiskers don't have red and black blob in the middle
@Kortuk :)
A cat’s whisker detector (sometimes called a crystal detector) is an antique electronic component consisting of a thin wire that lightly touches a crystal of semiconducting mineral (usually galena) to make a crude point-contact rectifier. Developed by early radio researchers Jagadish Chandra Bose, G. W. Pickard and others, this device was used as the detector in early crystal radios, from about 1906 through the Second World War. It gave this type of radio receiver its name. It was the first type of semiconductor diode, and in fact the first semiconductor electronic device. The term...
21:05
@Kortuk :o)
@jippie very crappy early diode really.
A very archaic joke :)
@Kortuk yeah I almost forgot about that.
I would have gotten it faster but I dont have the years experience required.
@Kortuk Or just been a while since you saw one
@Kortuk during the world war, people were very ... what do you call it ... to make diodes to listen to the radio
21:07
@W5VO I think you got my joke
I remember something with blue rasor blades too
@Kortuk Well, I consider myself barely qualified, considering that I don't have my Ph.D or 35 years experience
@Kortuk until then, I won't berate you for your lack of knowledge
:o) now she came walking in with her pet mouse, that is a better cat's toy
@W5VO Thanks brah.
@jippie Yes, Yes it is.
i'm getting old. Can't read the writing on the diode. I'm guessing it is an 1N4148, but I've been sorting zeners too last couple of days ...
so here is a question for you guys: @Kortuk @W5VO
how can I figure out if this diode is an 1N4148 or a zener rated at any voltage between 2V and 33V?
21:14
@jippie put a large resistor in series, and apply 50V
one way you'll get about 0.7V drop, and the other way you'll get less than 50 if it's a zener.
breakdown voltage of the 1N4148 is 100V
@W5VO max
V(R) = 75V
V(R,MAX) = 100V
that's an option yes.
just find myself a powersupply that can deliver such high voltage.
I should get mijself one of those fancy microscope thingies to look at these things
what do you have available?
old phone adapters ;o)
Plug it into the wall outlet :)
j/k
I used to have a proper (but linear) lab supply, but as I only use 12 and 5V I usually use old SMPS's that I find
@W5VO I know that is a bad idea [@230V(eff)], but what does 'j/k' mean
21:19
Just Kidding
when it is not related to a flip flop
ah
I hate JK flipflops
@W5VO I used to love them in school, because I was about the only one able to remember how they work
@W5VO I was laughing at this one
@jippie 230V wall outlet is much higher instantaneous voltage then that.
230*sqrt(2)
is the peak instantaneous.
With every question about transformerless power supplies or plugging capacitors in wall outlets, I can feel my hair jump up
21:21
@Kortuk If the regular diode voltage was higher, then it would be possible actually
@Kortuk I know, that is why I wrote effective
If there is one thing I learned before I switched to IT, ...
@jippie We are discussing DC measurements, Which is why I said something.
it must be having great respect for mains supplies (or higher)
@jippie Ha, My current job has taught me that it is not as dangerous as I once believed. I often consider most of the "freak out" advice given on this site is over the top.
@jippie you could do it with a resistor divider and an AC multimeter
21:23
I once grabbed over two phases (400V).
It annoys me when the only answer someone can get is to DONT DO SOMETHING THAT CRAZY.
@jippie I put a fuse into a box with around 50F of capacitors on one side and about 2 Farad on the other side with one side discharged and one side at 300V DC.
@Kortuk but the other problem is that some of the people come at it like "I'm a complete beginner but I want to poke a fork into the outlet"
@jippie The stainless steal became an arc welder in my hand, was pretty cool.
@W5VO Yes, and those are frustrating also, I almost wish we had one question as to why if you are just starting you should not put you finger in an outlet and just close those as duplicates.
I put my thumb once on an N-connector, carrying only some 40V or so ...
at 460MHz
and it hurt big time
had a nice little spot on my thumb for many months
RF burns, they hurt.
21:26
And the other day ... I dropped a metal connector of a fiber optic cable
and it fell between two rails, carrying -42V in a datacenter of a large dutch telecom operator
@jippie Ha, my co worker jumped when I checked if the fiber cable was good by checking for light, he used to do a lot of telecom and it would have blinded me on the spot had I looked at one of his.
trust me I was blinded for about 15 minutes
@jippie hahahahaha
I was blinded by the arch from the power supply
@jippie Yes, I knew what you meant.
21:28
and still all equipment was running as if nothing happened
@jippie We had an electrician say we did not need to power things down for him to add an outlet, he then shorted his screw driver across the outlet and flash blinded himself and we reminded him that our breakers are for hundreds and hundreds of amps, not for 10 or 15.
yeah those long haul lasers are nice ones
@jippie He sat there about 5 minutes afterwards and then said, " I will start again when I can see"
I have no clue about how many amps were behind that -42V issue, but I've seen the battery room that came with it... I think I don't even want to know.
@jippie I think it had a 1 over 8 amps
you know, the sideways 8.
21:31
@Kortuk With me I just stood, grabbed one of the 19"racks and waited until the light came back in my eyes
@jippie Hahaha.
@W5VO I can also just try to say Hi on the way back from Memphis not this saturday but a week later.
If that works better for you, but that will be dinner for sure.
yeah and these arcs do funny things with your knees as well
@Kortuk We'll see. We may not be available then, my July looks crazy
they were all wobbly
@W5VO And there will always be another chance.
If neither works out well.
@jippie MY co worker was stunned when I did the arc welding, I did not jump, I did not even flinch, I calmly pulled the fuse back and placed it on the table and then walked away.
Before you do any job you should think through what reaction you need to take if something goes wrong. If I am in a high voltage cabinet I tell myself to not jump under any circumstance, there is nothing it will help and lots of ways it can hurt.
After I set it down I walked over and yelled at myself.
21:36
@Kortuk And this is the only way to learn. and yet we tell everybody not to do it ;o)
I still remember that I should never touch any copper colored strips in cabinets ...
@jippie haha
@jippie I just forgot the other cabinet had that big of tank caps on it.
luckily I had really dry hands that day, otherwise I would most definitely would have needed someone to power off the factory
@jippie Haha. Most of the time if you are not holding anything you get thrown.
My dad decided to become a painter after he was bitten by a (tube) radio in his youth ;o)
@jippie ha
21:39
My grandmom told me about how he yelled 'OUCH it BITES!!' ;o)
@jippie Awesome
Now I head home, I will be back online later, I will be online when you get up @jippie
deal, I will finish my beer and head to bed in a few minutes
drive safely
tomorrow end of my morning I'm away for the weekend :)
@jippie Have a good night
thnx
@jippie Ohh yes, So we will not talk tomorrow evening!
21:41
unless they have wifi in the cottage ;o)
afraid not though :(
enjoy your weekend
@Kortuk let me know your timing so I can juggle the family. I can give you a google voice number to call if you would like.
oh wait, @Kortuk is going on holiday too
@Kortuk enjoy your holiday :)
@W5VO enjoy your weekend!
I'm out
clickkk
@jippie later
@Kortuk I can send it by email if you would like
21:59
@jippie wanna see it?
22:12
@W5VO Sure, that works well. I cant remember if your email is gmail, then we can just use google talk for scheming.
@clabacchio He clicks the leave button right after saying clickkk
@clabacchio he will respond in morning.
@Kortuk no problem :)
@W5VO I cant seem to find your emails at all using your real name.
@Kortuk I've lost the point in the wall of text
did you say anything interesting? :)
@clabacchio No.
@clabacchio It was mostly discussion with tony.
@Kortuk how is it going with him?
22:20
@clabacchio Umm, it is hard to gauge progress. Today was a very long discussion that I worry did not do anything productive.
@Kortuk uhm...still problems?
@clabacchio Sorta, not anything severe. At least things are being discussed here before they become more serious.
@Kortuk I don't want the diamond anymore :P
Anyway you may have a limited edition of the thesis...I'm converting it to B/N to save on prints :)
23:09
@clabacchio B/N?
@clabacchio Ha, limited edition clabaacchio rare print.
@W5VO I know your name
And that verifies it, but my google email is not turning up your old emails with it
try first initial, last name
or my callsign
very frustrating. Add me on gchat if you have mine, which I think you do. Just shoot me a cell and I will talk to you at some point to work out the time. I am hoping to be there closer to noon but I have been waking up at noon so I may be late
Got it with just last name, which I tried earlier and must have typo'ed
call sign did not work.
@clabacchio Funny thing to say, at some point you will get the irony.
Be back later
Taking hungry wife to dinner :)
23:45
