Bit of a change of plans with my N64 adapter

I think I should work on a N64 to USB instead. I think it's better if I figure things out on my own and work out schematics and everything. I just don't know where to start.

I'm not trying to hint at asking for you guys to do it by the way haha. I'm just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as far as learning what I need to learn to figure out how to do this myself

creating your own circuit is a whole different kind of sports, let alone USB

@MarkLyons you're looking at creating hardware, firmware for that hardware and a driver on your PC

there are excellent open usb thingies though, but it is not for the faint at hart

USB also has a variable latency.

I want to do this for fun but also because I want to really dumb down the steps and make a nice tutorial of it for my first post on my personal blog. I asked the guy if I could do that with the guide I was using and he said no (even though I told him I'd give proper credit and it would be a different guide entirely) so I was thinking I could work something out myself

@MarkLyons What is your experience in electronics? I checked your profile page, but it is empty.

The plan was for this to be my first project

Can't find a parts list. Guess I'll just have to figure it out with the schematics

@MarkLyons oh well, at least it is a guided start. On the other hand, a good starter would be to try to get a microcontroller programmed. There is an ATmega8 in this project, you'll need to program it, using yuor PC.

I entered the wonderful world of microcontrollers with an Arduino starter's kit. Today I use this Arduino to program my microcontrollers and I build little projects containing ATtiny's.

@MarkLyons I think you could probably do your N64 controller to USB using something like an Arduino. I have seen several articles on making the Arduino into a USB HID device, and the N64 controller shouldn't be too hard to interface. The catch is that it's not a "follow baby steps" project and requires programming

@W5VO Atmel has a "ATtiny25 Automotive" (I believe it was a 25). Guess what is at the bottom of the last page of that datasheet?

Why are car manufacturers so stubborn? They should know better than to use AVR's (according to the datasheet).

BTW the paragraph on what an "ATtiny Automotive" makes the chip fit for automotive purpose is plain gibberish to me

besides, who would give up the branding opportunity: ATtiny 25 - NASCAR edition. Crashes and burns every 25-50 cycles
