Hio
Hi*

2 hours later…
03:15
@cchase88 Hi mate, sorry no one was around.
@W5VO I am probably going to try to say hi on Saturday upcoming.
03:35
@Kortuk Huh?
@W5VO On this Saturday I will be driving through your town!
Or if easier I can probably make it the saturday after, but this saturday I can do it around midday.
@Kortuk cool, we'll have to plan something - like lunch at the brewpub (seems appropriate)
@W5VO Very appropriate. I was assuming I would come say hi to you and let my family go tour the university so that I dont show up with my wife brother-in-law and sister-in-law the first time we meet up :)
I'll double check with the wife to make sure that we'll be in town that weekend (she schedules the travel)
but that should be after a design review, so i should either have a tanned hide or some spare time
@Kortuk anyways, bedtime. I need to get up early for biking and the inevitable baby screaming
@W5VO Ha. Good luck mate.

3 hours later…
06:19
good morning @Kortuk @W5VO
@jippie @W5VO WENT TO SLEEP!
sorry, caps
it's late already isn't it?
@jippie 1:24 am, not that late.
06:35
@Kortuk ah, you are one of those you gods that can still pull it of
i'm too old for that ;o)
@jippie Ha, I work a shift work job, I have to deal with it
I prefer not
ah right the shift, forgot about that
@Kortuk I have to run. Maybe catch you in an hour or so.
@jippie kk

2 hours later…
08:22
Just got back home and have to leave for work now.
Enjoy your shift @Kortuk
08:49
@jippie Ha, I dont work till "tomorrow" I just meant I have to adjust to staying up late because that is when my shifts are right now
be on in 10 hours

9 hours later…
17:53
hi all
hey
did I miss anything today?
:o)
18:23
doesn't look like it

1 hour later…
19:44
And I am back.
Hi @Kortuk, @jippie, and everyone else I haven't met yet.
maestro @Kortuk
Hi there @MarkLyons
@MarkLyons Ha, hello.
Bit of a change of plans with my N64 adapter
hey the room notification started to work :)
19:46
I think I should work on a N64 to USB instead. I think it's better if I figure things out on my own and work out schematics and everything. I just don't know where to start.
I'm not trying to hint at asking for you guys to do it by the way haha. I'm just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as far as learning what I need to learn to figure out how to do this myself
creating your own circuit is a whole different kind of sports, let alone USB
@MarkLyons you're looking at creating hardware, firmware for that hardware and a driver on your PC
there are excellent open usb thingies though, but it is not for the faint at hart
USB also has a variable latency.
Hmm
what the hell can I do haha
I want to do this for fun but also because I want to really dumb down the steps and make a nice tutorial of it for my first post on my personal blog. I asked the guy if I could do that with the guide I was using and he said no (even though I told him I'd give proper credit and it would be a different guide entirely) so I was thinking I could work something out myself
@MarkLyons What is your experience in electronics? I checked your profile page, but it is empty.
The plan was for this to be my first project
19:57
@MarkLyons OK, I think you should set yourself more feasible goals, no offense.
@MarkLyons try to finish the project you started and improve on it bit by bit
I'm in electronics for over 30yrs and I'm still working that way.
baby steps :o)
my favorite movie quote
Yeah, I understand
electronics is a lot of fun, but it is sometimes difficult to ... euhm ...
let me get my dictionary to translate for me :o)
I wasn't expecting it to be easy. Being a programmer is much of the same
it is difficult to get a feeling of what is involved in a 'simple' looking project.
Can't find a parts list. Guess I'll just have to figure it out with the schematics
20:05
@MarkLyons oh well, at least it is a guided start. On the other hand, a good starter would be to try to get a microcontroller programmed. There is an ATmega8 in this project, you'll need to program it, using yuor PC.
I entered the wonderful world of microcontrollers with an Arduino starter's kit. Today I use this Arduino to program my microcontrollers and I build little projects containing ATtiny's.
Hm, lots to think about
I need to go, but thanks for all the help
I'll get back to you as I try to figure this all out :)
@MarkLyons no problem
@MarkLyons :)
@jippie Last night I broke out my favorite scotch and had a double on the rocks(soapstone) and it was a fantastic experience. Tonight will probably be a beer.
@Kortuk you shouldn't spoil yourself so much ;o)
I have this automotive electronics thing on my mind. Not sure if it is worth a question on the stack
@MarkLyons I think you could probably do your N64 controller to USB using something like an Arduino. I have seen several articles on making the Arduino into a USB HID device, and the N64 controller shouldn't be too hard to interface. The catch is that it's not a "follow baby steps" project and requires programming
20:21
At the end of any Atmel datasheet there is this sentence (amongst several others): [...], Atmel products are not suitable for, and shall not be used in, automotive applications. Atmel’s products are not intended, authorized, or warranted for use as components in applications intended to support or sustain life.
@jippie Ha.
Now I know cars have AVR's inside them ..., I read an article about a proud Atmel having so many AVR's in cars
@jippie Practically every datasheet has a statement saying "Here's our part. Don't do anything important with it. We just wired some stuff together in a way that you might find interesting. If it breaks, consider it a miracle that it worked in the first place."
@W5VO Yeah, that earned a star.
lol
20:24
@W5VO Atmel has a "ATtiny25 Automotive" (I believe it was a 25). Guess what is at the bottom of the last page of that datasheet?
Why are car manufacturers so stubborn? They should know better than to use AVR's (according to the datasheet).
BTW the paragraph on what an "ATtiny Automotive" makes the chip fit for automotive purpose is plain gibberish to me
20:40
ATtiny25 Automotive: for use in applications related to (but not including) automobiles
(where is Google's HTML version of a pdf (datasheet) when you need it)
besides, who would give up the branding opportunity: ATtiny 25 - NASCAR edition. Crashes and burns every 25-50 cycles
2
probably the company lawyers
@W5VO Twice in one day, you're on fire.
@jippie Solicitors.
what's the difference? solicitors vs. lawyers?
wait let me google that
20:44
@jippie UK vs. US to my knowledge.
@Kortuk damn, you're faster than google
do I get my starred msg now?
This comparison does not apply to the United States, where the term "solicitor" is not used. The terms "lawyer" and "attorney" mean the same thing. A Lawyer must graduate from law school and must be licensed to practice law.
@jippie Sure, I believe in charity :)
@Kortuk cool
21:40
I'm off to bed guys
22:06
@Kortuk hey man!7
