Hi all.
Hiya @DavidKessner
@AnindoGhosh Long time, no chat! :)
@DavidKessner True. I've been out most days this week, and all of last weekend too. Yesterday I was at a nice power design seminar by Texas Instruments.
@AnindoGhosh TI does some nice seminars. I've been to their power seminar, and it was good.

Sam
Hi, I have a beginner question. I'm looking for a Relay that's SPST, preferably NO. A lot of parts sites use "1 form A" or just "1A" or even a combination with SPST.
Is 1 form A synonymous with SPST? If not, does anyone have a wiki link to teach me the difference so I don't order the wrong parts?
14:17
@DavidKessner This is true. Some interesting sessions.
@Sam This "1 form A", could you share a link to where you're seeing it?
@Sam Also, why don't you tell us the spec for your relay: What is the desired drive voltage and current, what is the desired switched (output side) voltage and current, is the output line AC or DC, and what size constraints do you have?
Sam
Sam
@AnindoGhosh I didn't want to ask anyone to shop for me, but if you're willing to help a beginner I'd appreciate it.
Yo yo yo!
Sam
Sam
This link should work.
@Sam I wasn't going to shop for you, I would be telling you what to search for. :-)
Sam
Sam
@AnindoGhosh I'm looking for a 24VDC Relay SPST NO with Quick Disconnector terminals and ideally a mounting bracket.
@AnindoGhosh I'm happy you won't just find me the part, I prefer to learn what I'm doing. :)
14:23
@Sam Is the 24 Volts the voltage you would be driving it with, or the voltage to be driven on the output side?
@Sam We're all too lazy to actually hand you an answer :-)
Sam
Sam
@AnindoGhosh 24V will be applied to both the coil and the switch. It's the only voltage I'm working with.
@AnindoGhosh Also don't hesitate to correct me if I write something illogical (ie wrong, non-sensical)
Hmm. Type of mounting? There's the house electrical type mounting (search for Omron Timer Relays, for instance), then there is the auto mounting (the page you linked), and a few others.
Sam
Sam
Simple bracket that has a hole for mounting with one screw, but I can create my own if necessary.
@AnindoGhosh For what it's worth, I'm replacing this:
This is dual terminal, but we don't use the NC terminal so I don't see the need to buy a SPDT Relay.
14:41
@Sam Sorry, I got pulled into another discussion on another channel... Be with you momentarily.
Sam
Sam
Ok, ping me when you're done.
@Sam Utinni!
:P
Sam
Sam
Hey Corgi :)
@Sam how ya doin' ?
Sam
Sam
Doing good, considering this relay / bilge pump issue has been bugging me for a while, but now I'm making progress.
How's your day?
14:49
@Sam good, woke up 15 minutes ago
Sam
Sam
The first 15 minutes of my day almost sucked, my friend's cat fell from the bedroom loft onto a concrete floor. The cat is old and arthritic, for a few moment I wondered what bones it had just broken. Turns out the crusty old bastard is just fine.
15:11
@Sam I'm back. So... is the relay required in an automotive environment?
Sam
Sam
A marine environment, the boat only has 24V batteries.
@Sam If you're limited to local availability, the SPDT may be your cheapest option.
@Sam Woah! Marine = huge line spikes, 100V and up!
@Sam OK, quick point to note: an SPST is not necessarily less expensive than an SPDT - in fact a quick search shows me the opposite. The reason is economies of scale - they cost nearly the same to make, but the SPDT sells more, and can be used as an SPST.
Sam
Sam
@W5VO I already called every supply store in the region, I have to ship it in from somewhere...
@Sam Now, when I searched for 24 Volt 5 Amp relay with base, I found many. So could you share what the challenges are that you are facing? I'm sure solutions would happen.
Sam
Sam
15:16
@AnindoGhosh Ok, I'll stick with the SPDT, unless I come across a sale.
@Sam And SPDT relays are available locally for you? Oh, and speaking of relay bases, I use ones like this: ebay.com/itm/…
Sam
Sam
@AnindoGhosh Terminology is the biggest problem. I'm still not certain what "Contact - Arrangement = 1 Form A (NO)" means...
@Sam That one's a relay AND a base. If the relay goes bad, you simply replace it in the base, no messing with wires.
@Sam NO is normally open, the contact arrangement is the "pinout" in conventional electronics terms.
Sam
Sam
So are "1 Form A" and SPST directly related or is it more related to pin orientation?
@Sam Hmm, so for search terms - You're probably looking for relays with bases, and therefore you'd probably want to exclude PCB mount relays. Voltage rating of 24 Volts primary means secondary is almost guaranteed to be higher, so you're good - look at the specs of course. Another thing, if you can find an automotive-rated relay, that's a preferred option, but better yet is a marine-rated option.
Those last also have ingress ratings, dust and water.
Sam
Sam
15:21
@AnindoGhosh I like the swappable base idea, but we already have this option with the quick disconnect terminals.
@Sam No, The pin-out aka "Contact Arrangement" is: Single contact, NARM format code A.
@Sam And code A as it happens is SPST with normally open.
@Sam I hope that sorts out your doubts?
Sam
Sam
@AnindoGhosh Awesome, that does help. A couple sites don't use the long NARM descriptions only short. I'm starting to get it.
@Sam Well, you can always reverse look-up from the NARM handbook: leachintl2.com/english/english2/vol6
@Sam ah ha ha ha!
15:41
Yay! Sparkfun is sending me a replacement tip! (the one that was in the original shipment was busted)
for free! no need to return the other one! Made my day..
@coding_corgi You can thank me. I didn't call them and tell them who you are! :)
@DavidKessner Grrr.... Wouldn't they keep customer info private?
@coding_corgi They have two beer kegs in the office. "Private" is relative.
@DavidKessner Hmmmm... I bet you bought those for them.... Soon.... You are going to takeover sparkfun! Have you met the owner?
@DavidKessner can't they only drink beer 1 and half hours before their shift ends?
@coding_corgi I have met the owner. He bought me lunch! (Ok, some others in the company took me to lunch and paid on the company card.)
@coding_corgi They are allowed to drink beer anytime they want.
Even at 9 a.m.
15:56
@DavidKessner wha? why?
@DavidKessner how is he?
@DavidKessner i have a flux pen
@coding_corgi That is common in the small high-tech type businesses. Also, people in the warehouse are allowed to use skateboards when moving stuff around.
@jippie cody has a bedtime when you guys chat at that time it's around 12:50-2:00 AM for me
A relay is an electrically operated switch. Many relays use an electromagnet to operate a switching mechanism mechanically, but other operating principles are also used. Relays are used where it is necessary to control a circuit by a low-power signal (with complete electrical isolation between control and controlled circuits), or where several circuits must be controlled by one signal. The first relays were used in long distance telegraph circuits, repeating the signal coming in from one circuit and re-transmitting it to another. Relays were used extensively in telephone exchanges and ...
:P
@jippie who does this remind of you? :P

@ThePhoton switches?
@coding_corgi or relays
@ThePhoton hmmm...
relays are cool
i rarely use them
@DavidKessner Small high-tech un-insured private businesses.
once i made one that would 'turn on and off' at a lesser rate each time
i called it the 'annoyer'
it can irritate anyone
@coding_corgi Named after its inventor!
16:14
@ThePhoton They actually have special insurance for the skateboard thing. Not sure about insurance+beer.
@ThePhoton well of course
@DavidKessner no wonder you have connections with SFE, free beer...
@coding_corgi I've never actually have drank their beer. :(
@DavidKessner ha ha ha
16:26
@DavidKessner I have to tell you now that I was really admiring your patience w.r.t. the power supply capacitor question. Just saying man, "I am not worthy!"
@angelatlarge Thanks! That one was really testing my patience!
@DavidKessner Well, you didn't show it, so I "had to" make the snarky comment for you. But you were awesome.
@angelatlarge I appreciated the snark.
@DavidKessner Well, thanks. I am glad it did some... "good" (?)
16:50
Anyone know, what is that smart-sounding word meaning "having the same name?"
@angelatlarge eponymous?
@ThePhoton BINGO!
Was it a real question or just to see whose verbal SAT score was more than 50% of their math score?
@ThePhoton Thank you.
@ThePhoton Yes, real question.
@angelatlarge

It was their last authorized release on I.R.S. Records, to whom they had been contracted since 1982, having just signed with Warner Bros. Records. Eponymous is notable for its inclusion of several rare or alternative versions of known tracks. Spanning from the Chronic Town EP to the previous year's breakthrough hit album Document, Eponymous provides a fair overv...
16:53
@ThePhoton That's sooo meta
R.E.M. was meta before Randalll Munroe even got out of high school.
@DavidKessner what was SFE's profit margins for 2012?
Uh, oh!
(Let's not bring Douglas Hofstadter into this)
My netbook's fan is making a weird noise...
@ThePhoton I am still kind of in shock that you got it. I was expecting "homonym!" and "namesake!", but that's exactly the word I was looking for.
16:57
@angelatlarge You need to listen to more 80's alt rock.
@ThePhoton Is "eponymous" all over the place in 80's alt rock? Or just that one album name?
@angelatlarge Just the one album name. But it's also common to talk about "such-and-such band's eponymous album"
@ThePhoton Let's see how many times @ThePhoton said 'rock'
@coding_corgi Cause it's old school
@ThePhoton yup
128 messages found containing rock
17:01
@ThePhoton Yeah, that was just the example I was going to give after I got a few "homonym"s and "namesake"s. Except in place of "such-and-such" I was going to use "The Hamster Anus Creed's ___ous album...."
@coding_corgi I have no idea. But they are growing, so their profit must be good.
@DavidKessner me wantz they money! :]
@DavidKessner Your logic is ... not necessarily all that logical...
2
@ThePhoton ha ha ha
@coding_corgi 129 now
17:04
@ThePhoton grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...................
@ThePhoton I'm an engineer, not an accountant! :)
@DavidKessner what kind of car does the owner drive?
@DavidKessner Aren't engineers good at math?
@coding_corgi I have no idea.
@coding_corgi But accounting requires a whole different kind of math.
@DavidKessner ah...I bet he drives an Escalade or a Benz or a Porsche me best guess
@DavidKessner it's just addtion, subtraction, and knowing when to call the other guy's bluff.
17:06
@DavidKessner an easier one? Money+math is easier
@ThePhoton But you also need to know how to hide numbers. That's different than imaginary numbers.
@coding_corgi Easy for you to say, Mr-I-Get-$10-Per-Week-Allowance!
@ThePhoton His terminology problem was about NARM type short-names, i.e. type A
@DavidKessner another zero could be more accurate... :P
but's it's like every month
@coding_corgi Ok. $10.0.
@AnindoGhosh And the section I linked gives those names for the simplest types (A, B, C).
Which was all he was asking about.
17:09
@DavidKessner ha ha, 10 + another zero (or whole digit) = 100
Not that your chart from TE wasn't better.
figures digits etc. all the same
@coding_corgi Well, I said I was bad at accounting!
@ThePhoton Yup, I'd given him the NARM lookup sheet.
@DavidKessner Hide them in the trunk of your Mercedes.
17:10
@DavidKessner i think you're just bad at math
@AnindoGhosh LMLTUOWFY
@ThePhoton No room. Too many bodies in there.
@DavidKessner ha ha ha!
@ThePhoton Let me ??? that ?? ?? ?? for you?
@ThePhoton Hmm?
17:14
is serversupply.com a trusted vendor
@Tut is back!
okay guys im out
emergency system halt
the fan is not working properly

@AnindoGhosh Thanks for the help, I have a part ordered and I'll install it over the weekend.
@Sam Excellent.

@ThePhoton Thanks for the Wiki page, I appreciate the general overview. I'll turn to it if I can't get my system running.
18:29
Is more than three images in a post considered spamming?
Should i add more pictures to try to illuminate the question?
@Hakonbogen Depends on your rep.
@Hakonbogen I edited your post, primarily to remove one objectionable word, but also to replace all lower case first person singular pronouns with upper case.
@Hakonbogen Depends on the question :)
Its this question. electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/74311/… - Not trying to be like please go through and fix my problems while i slack off, but a pro might spot obvious mistakes in the design
@Hakonbogen Why I haven't looked at the code etc, have you verified that the code is compatible with the specific stepper you are using? I once spent a few hours in a similar situation before I realized that the stepper I was using had a different step pulse sequence than the one in the tutorial I was following. Different steppers use different stepping command sequences.
@Hakonbogen The other bit that messed me up on another stepper was that it needed step pulses to be sent out much slower than typical - I added a delay between stepping pulses, then it worked fine.
18:35
@AnindoGhosh Haven't. I'll check that out. But i've tried multiple different code templates from multiple sites (mostly those in top results when i google the problem) and the standard Stepper.h library from Arduino.cc
@Hakonbogen No, you would need to find a datasheet for the specific motor, and take the stepping pulse sequence from there.
@Hakonbogen Alternatively, it is fairly simple to write code that runs through a series of 8 pulses each (or 4 or whatever), in every possible pulse sequence, to see which one works.
@AnindoGhosh Yes i tried pulsing (LOW,LOW ) delay (LOW,HIGH) delay etc.
@Hakonbogen Then find the datasheet
@AnindoGhosh I've also tried two different stepper motors
@AnindoGhosh this is the motor: adafruit.com/products/324 datasheet: adafruit.com/datasheets/12vstepper.jpg
Added those to the question as well
@Hakonbogen That's a standard NEMA-type unit, try verifying which wires correspond to which winding, that can help you work out a stepping sequence.
@Hakonbogen It looks like Oli G also thinks you should try stepping slower.
18:43
@AnindoGhosh Thanks! I'll try that now. At current setup it's not stepping at all. Just vibrating the whole motor
@Hakonbogen All the best. I'm out for the day.
Bye all!
Goodbye and thanks @AnindoGhosh
19:10
@AnindoGhosh For the record. Oli Glaser helped me with some tough questions and i found out i had inverted the NPN transistor. Now it works. Thanks for the help!
19:58
@coding_corgi some people have to work at the time your mom tells you to get out of bed :-p
good morning @all
@jippie Hallo deaR @jippie
20:15
hi there @angelatlarge
REst assured everyone, my netbook has a tomorrow!
so back up and running!
@jippie hmmmm..... They have probably already on their lunchbreak! :P
Yo yo yo?
20:49
Anyone here?
@coding_corgi Nope.
@DavidKessner oh, okay... How ya doing Mr. Kessner?
@coding_corgi Not bad. Been a busy day. Had amazing sushi for lunch. You?
@DavidKessner Had beef for lunch... How's the climate over in CO?
@coding_corgi F-ing HOT. Almost 100 deg F.
20:55
@DavidKessner Damn you are lucky... Yet i said climate - not weather
@coding_corgi Climate is hot. Getting hotter at a rate of about 0.6 deg C per decade.
@DavidKessner Shut up you idiot! Palm trees or ever green trees?! Cloudy or sunny?! Warm or cool?! etc.!
Normally the weather in Colorado is quite pleasant, but we do have our share of very hot and very cold days. Over 300 sunny days a year.
@DavidKessner oh, we have 180 cloudy day over here in OH
@coding_corgi Is that just over your house, or all over OH?
20:58
@DavidKessner well, mostly NE OH
@DavidKessner Can't belive SFE gave me an RMA, so happy.... I LOVE YOU SFE!!!
@coding_corgi I'm guessing that you actually get more snow each year than I get here in CO.
@DavidKessner not really, well, sort've :]
@DavidKessner who do you buy hobbyist electronics from?
@DavidKessner This is sooooooo cool: youtube.com/watch?v=GxC9qMRIWec, the part where they explain their crap is boring, but the fight is cool. I saw Pete eating, do you know Pete?
@coding_corgi you broke the red box already?
@jippie no, they send me a bade soldering tip
@coding_corgi I don't buy much hobbyist stuff, but when I do it is either from a local store, Sparkfun, or Digikey. But usually I have so many manufactures that just give me stuff that I don't often need to buy stuff.
21:03
@DavidKessner would you like to work at SFE?
@DavidKessner You're near digi key too?! I have got to move to 'BO' CO2
@coding_corgi Nah. Mail order.
@DavidKessner ah, ill stay where i am now
@DavidKessner Do you know Pete @ SFE?
@coding_corgi SFE would be a good place to work, but it isn't better than my current job.
@coding_corgi Not ringing a bell.
@DavidKessner no free beer @ work? ha ha jk!
@DavidKessner Pete has that show according to pete
@coding_corgi I get to borrow amazing sound systems. Once I borrowed a rig that had 48,000 watts of amplifiers and could cover a crowd of 3,000 people.
21:07
@DavidKessner cool, are you guys better than Bose?
...and I get a good employee discount.
@DavidKessner or Beats?
@coding_corgi Bose is amateur. Beats too.
@DavidKessner ok, what makes you say that?
Do you have good brand name rank?
@coding_corgi Our brand has a very good reputation for 40+ years.
21:09
@DavidKessner what's it called?
@coding_corgi We just came out with a new power amplifier that has 5,000 watts of output!.
qsc.com
@DavidKessner you forgot the http://
@coding_corgi Are you sure you can spell www?
@DavidKessner yes
I am the head EE for the Q-Sys line of products.
21:11
i am looking for some good quality brand name showy=, around 50 - 70 dollar head phones, and suggestions?
@DavidKessner cool
MLM
MLM
@coding_corgi Tritton Detonators...
@MLM wha?
@DavidKessner 564 discontinued products, are they all yours?
@DavidKessner sick website
@coding_corgi I always advise to try before you buy. Load up your iPod or whatever and go to a store that lets you test them. Buy the one that you like. If the store doesn't let you try them, go somewhere else. Guitar Center is usually good about that.
21:14
@DavidKessner uhhh.... I am not allowed to do that, unless my mom is right next to me with peril and clorox wipes wiping my head and everything i will try on, which can get stressful... :p
@DavidKessner you guys don't sell headphones?!\
@MLM those are sick man!
time for bed
/me is out
clickkk
@coding_corgi Nope. Unless you want to put a strap on a pair of 18 inch, 2,400 watt subwoofers and try to put that on your head.
@DavidKessner oh
@DavidKessner you'll like the latest question on the stack
@jippie The "alternating quantity" one?
21:18
@DavidKessner Do I know your taste in questions or don't I :o)
@MLM EW! EW! EW! Those are made by microcrap!
@DavidKessner im sorry, i am going with bose, tear, tear... :P
MLM
MLM
@coding_corgi no. It is a MadCatz company.. That shouldn't matter anyway.
@MLM oops... the photo i saw said 'XBOX 360'
I think it is a Google translated question.
It is a shame that sarcastic answers are looked down upon by the establishment.
21:22
@DavidKessner ?
@jippie I would love to give that one a completely bogus answer, written in a style similar to the original question.
@DavidKessner I'll leave the page open for me to refresh in the morning
the establishment is only a handful people ;o)
/out
@jippie Bye.
@DavidKessner gimme teh time of where you is!!!!
me need to know
@coding_corgi Beer:30.
3:30.
21:28
@DavidKessner tanks
me isout
@coding_corgi ...
@coding_corgi I found some places that my designs are being used: Great American Ball Park, Paul Brown Stadium, and the Cedar Point Theme Park. All near you.
@jippie What's this: Grand Café het Postkantoor, Hoogeveen?
21:43
@DavidKessner A big cafe near the Postkan gate, in Hoogeveen?
@ThePhoton They are using my sound system. But I know nothing about the place.
@DavidKessner Google street view says it's more like a not very big cafe, near the post office.
@ThePhoton Well that's boring! Still, I wouldn't mind being sent out there for a tech support call.
@DavidKessner Cafe, not coffee shop.
@ThePhoton What's the difference?
21:50
In NL, coffee shop is where they sell pot.
(I'm probably simplifying ( or just wrong )...Jippie can correct me if he wants.
)
@ThePhoton Well that's still boring! I live in Colorado, we're practically the US version of Amsterdam when it comes to pot.
@ThePhoton That looks like an actual respectable place!
@DavidKessner Doesn't look like it nees a 50,000 watt sound system, though...
@ThePhoton But they have a lot of DJ's, and movies.
@ThePhoton The pics look like a different place: prosoundweb.com/article/…
"The Mail Company is divided into two distinct rooms, on either side of the DJ booth, with a separate, low-level café at front of house. " Maybe?
@ThePhoton The link I gave you is from 2009 and isn't for my stuff. It must have been remodeled again more recently.
22:37
@DavidKessner Sounds like somebody's got a lot of money.
Yo yo yo!
@ThePhoton Yeah, it wasn't me!
@DavidKessner great, do i care? no, period
@coding_corgi Bad dog! No Cookie!
@DavidKessner your 1000 miles away from me, do you expect to give me a cookie?
22:41
@coding_corgi It doesn't matter, since you're not getting one anyway. Besides, the last time I sent cookies 1000 miles the FedEx guy ate them.
@DavidKessner cool...
Which is weird. I didn't think FedEx hired dogs.
@DavidKessner bad human! you should've used UPS!
@DavidKessner cheaper probably... that's what keeps them from bankrupcy...
@DavidKessner Cookies for dogs? Dookies? Doogies?
@angelatlarge Dookies is what they leave for humans on the lawn.
22:46
@angelatlarge Treats, i belive they are called treats. Anyway Dookis is ridiculos, should we name cookies, hookies?
We used to call them Dog Biscuits, which was ridiculous since there is no dog in those!
@DavidKessner ha ha... it makes sense though: biscuits for doggies
Time for me to go. Later all!
@DavidKessner Goodbye. Forever. UPS guy, take him away! ;D
@coding_corgi No, those are mookies and wookies.
22:52
@angelatlarge ah, yummy... wookies...
@coding_corgi It's a pain having to pick the fur out from between your teeth afterwards though...
@coding_corgi Besides, you only get to eat boogies
23:13
@angelatlarge ha ha...
