Q: Is there a single historic event which could be changed to cause the USA to use SI units?

Pavel JanicekI am time traveller with aim to make world better. Last time I went to the past, all I heard was: "Kill Hitler!" So I went to the past and I must tell you, April 1945 was pretty loud in Berlin! After I returned back, telling everyone that I shot Hitler to the head on 30th April 1945, all I hear...

@sempaiscuba Well, yeah, these were not new photos from the column itself, but from repros. Thing is: nobody called that out here. Maybe just sa coincidence. But I am already under the impression that people never read footnotes – or follow up on links given on SE. If true, that's a bad sign.

@LangLangC That's part of why I try mightily to keep all my answers out of TL;DR territory. :-)

@T.E.D. Indeed a pearl. I never heard of that… And it seems that the first comment under the moon-shot-thing is the 2nd-most realistic prediction there.
@T.E.D. Point taken. We need to slow down this internet thing. I just heard it will eventually not work or push through anyway.

Q: What is the strategic significance of Melilla and Ceuta to Spain, and how had Spain sustained the rule despite its decline?

wodemingziThese two pieces of land are on the Mediterranean coast, so there may be some strategic significance. After Spain's decline, other colonies, such as the Philippines and Cuba, were taken away, so it was noteworthy that the two cities would be remained under the Spanish dominance. In addition, afte...

@LangLangC Well, I knew that they were picture of plaster casts taken from the column. Given how hard it is to get pictures of the original I wasn't surprised.
However, that was the only image I could find of that part of the column where the copyright unequivocally allowed re-use.
It does rather make the point about proper citations though. If most people don't check or follow up on links on History:SE, then they're probably also happy to accept almost any nonsense that's posted here.
It then falls to the rest of us to check those sources, and challenge / correct / respond where appropriate.

Q: Battles where baits are overlooked by the enemy, resulting in failure of the baiter

OganMIn battles, often military deception is used to bait the enemy into thinking that a certain move will be made, forcing them to act accordingly and attack from an unexpected angle. Intuitively, I would think that there is a fine line between being too obvious of a bait and being too subtle to be n...
