@Polynomial Yeah, that's probably the one I am thinking of.
Wouldn't it be more useful for charts and other stuff, if the "quarter", "week", e.t.c. would be used in for "past three months", "past 7 days",... sense? Seems that how it's now most of these date ranges are equal, say currently "month" and "quarter" are exactly the same.
e.g. first week of the year has all four date ranges exactly the same
@TildalWave Yes. I agree. As it is, they're fairly useless except for at end of period.
@TildalWave Meta.SO post methinks.
@TerryChia I'm searching right now if someone suggested it before
15:08
@Polynomial ernernermush decided to attack Israel. Because we are Evil, apparently.
damn, delayed enter there.... @Adnan was on the phone.
surprise interview....
@Polynomial I vaguely remember reading some "solid stats" on something like this from Matt Blaze a year or so back.
@Adnan no, not just - lots of DDoS, though I havent seen it. They did crack some real sites, according to rumor.
I think the result was that no one uses anything other than ASCII because they can't guarantee that they'll be able to type their password on someone else's computer.
I stay off of operational stuff...
@Ladadadada interesting
15:10
I say, if you're calling me for help now, its too late.

Q: Week is not a useful default for the /users page

badpFirst off I don't think having "this week", "this month" or "this year" is a good idea; while it's computationally cheaper than the equivalent "last 7 days", "last 30 days", "last 365 days" it becomes kind of useless every Sunday (1st of month (like, uh, today), 1st of year). This really becomes...

Not sure why it's with though :O
It is only completed for the title of the suggestion, but not for the first paragraph of its text that's exactly what I'd like implemented too
Why can't hardware makers afford an English speaking technical writer?
Or an editor. Whatever.
TRUSTED USER. WHAT A FARCE.
@TomLeek heh. Dang, when didja pop past me?
@TomLeek Trust The Bear!
15:24
@TomLeek Ah, the shouting bear is back.
@TomLeek Now I can send you my CC information
@AviD @TerryChia Whaa whaaat?! security.stackexchange.com/questions/33942/… :D
3rd in the SuperCollider
@AviD Last Thursday, I think.
@Adnan whadaya want from me?
@AviD Your ass probably.
@ThomasPornin hmm, wasnt paying attention. Safe on 2nd row for a while, though, I think.
interesting how theres an almost 10K gap between 1st row and those that have a life.
2
15:27
@AviD Bear#1 should start dumping bounties on Hendrik's answers.
umm, no, errm, I meant "... and the 2nd row".
@TerryChia haha
I like the sound of "plausible deniability". Whenever I write it in answer, it gets some decent upvotes.
Also, it gives people the false impression that I'm smart or something.

Q: Facebook page receiving improbable amount of likes from unknown users

NatanA bit of an odd problem, but I'm not totally sure where to post this. I am an administrator for a facebook page that suddenly began receiving hundreds of likes in the past few days. This trend began on July 12th and has gradually been increasing since then. Most of the likes are from users i...

This is on topic?
@TildalWave Doesn't seem on-topic to me.
Also, nobody even mentioned it could be some Facebook internal scheme trying to excuse their alleged worth
15:40
@TildalWave Highly unlikely.
@TildalWave @Adnan - It's called "Like spamming" and I think it's at least marginally on-topic.
Facebook cracked down on it last year. nbcnews.com/technology/gadgetbox/…
@Adnan oh it's been suggested before, plus all social networks do it (of course, they would deny it promptly if anyone accuses them of doing it)
@Xander Like Spamming isn't the same as Fake Likes.
> we dont do ban here. we just digitally abuse you until you sub consciously shit your self every time you see the logo.
3
@Adnan I'm under the impression that there's a lot of cross-over, but I may be wrong. I don't really pay much attention to Facebook.
15:45
It's really silly to worry about your page getting a high number of likes. If they're real, then good for you. If they're fake, then they'll raise the perceived value of your page and will bring more real likes.
@AviD where's that from?
@Iszi Apparently that was a failed rep train. It isn't getting many upvotes.
@TildalWave dunno, some random page. Liked it. New mod policy.
@Xander By logging in as a page, you can like other people's comments on other pages. Under each comment you'll see something like "Xander Is The Best liked this"
Thus, free advertisement for your page (Xander Is The Best) on other popular pages.
@Adnan Ah, OK...That is different. Thanks for the clarification.
15:51
@TerryChia It's a fail train?
@TerryChia Give it some time. It's only been an hour.
@Iszi It currently has a hotness of 34, mainly because of the number of answers. According to the formula, there's a hope for it.

15
There you go ;)
@TildalWave brilliant!
16:09
@TildalWave You misspelled Defense.
3
@ScottPack Here we go....
Excellent.
Defense: Noun, to defend from or resist attack. Defence: Verb, to remove a fence.
3
@Scott I am the minister of deh fence.
3
@AviD Well that's different, then.
16:15
Hmm. Still haven't figured out how to star on mobile. @rory?
@AviD You have to switch to non-mobile view and hope. Alternatively, if someone else has already starred a message, you can add your own star by clicking on the star.
@AviD Doesn't the comment-upvoting method work?
Ohh. I knew that, but it never worked for me. Just realized its because I'm usually in transcript....
@ScottPack I put the royal crown on top so I thought it's best to use "English English" :P grammarist.com/spelling/defence-defense
4
Quite right, what what. ;)
> and defence is preferred in all other main varieties of English, including Australian, British, and Canadian English.
16:28
@ScottPack You've been Sloveniaed.
@Adnan that doesn't sound good :oo (I would never do that to @ScottPack)
@TildalWave :D
@Adnan He has problems with English as it is :)))
16:51
You people what with your psuedo-random use of simple Germanic languages.
@ScottPack Finno-Ugric, mothafaka!!
urgh, another "What tool does this?" question
@ScottPack what the actual fuck
3
I think the description is completely adequate.
@ScottPack I should get one of these.
You wondered what tool does that.
I'm pretty sure that tool does whatever you need.
I won't onebox this one, but it was a recommended item and looks even more hardcore: amazon.com/Really-Vibrating-Batteries-Warming-Included/dp/…
17:12
@ScottPack Jesus Christ! Is that thing safe?
Who knows.
@ScottPack I'm not sure I want to click that and have Amazon record it...
To the Reviews!!
@TerryChia You're over 18 now, it's cool.
@ScottPack What. The. Fuck.
Aren't you?
17:15
In which universe is that realistic?
Aren't you Asian? Do you really have to ask? I've seen the cartoons you people produce.
@ScottPack Not all Asians are Japanese.
As an American I demand more proof.
@Adnan Leave it to Yahoo Answers
17:20
@AviD Penalty one infraction @AviD for ambiguous Rory'ing :op
5
@RoryMcCune What ? There is only one @Rory. Heretic !
One @Rory to rule them all, One @Rory to find them, One @Rory to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
2
@TerryChia You need to put a little @ in front of the word Rory on each occurrence...!
@AntonyVennard Done.
.... thank you all for that flood of @rory'ing :op
17:27
Any time @Rory.
@rory @rory @rory.
<knock> <knock> <knock> @TerryChia <knock> <knock> <knock> @TerryChia <knock> <knock> <knock> @TerryChia
oh, and @rory.
<knock> <knock> <knock> @AntonyVennard <knock> <knock> <knock> @AntonyVennard <knock> <knock> <knock> @AntonyVennard
@TerryChia You really do love LOTR.
17:29
@Adnan hey, that one @rory thing by The Bear is just begging for that quote.
and in case anyone didn't get the reference youtube.com/watch?v=uYrylohza88
10 Quick, somebody star this.
8
@RoryMcCune hahaha, i liked the one where he knocked on the door after being chased by dogs.
Whoever starred it, thank you :D
Whoever adds one more star and messes it, I hate you!
17:32
@Adnan shouldn't you be thanking all 10 people who starred it?
@AntonyVennard Oh oh yeah. Thank you people, all 10 of you :D
@Adnan done.
@TerryChia I already hate you for hitting 7k

A: Down and upsides of application vulnerability cash reward programmes

Too much snark?
17:45
@TerryChia +1. The perfect amount of snark.
@TerryChia What's the actual problem to be solved?
@Adnan 723 You did it wrong. You must include three digits, and then it looks good.

340282366920938463463374607431768211456 wow, 2^128 is a big number!

2
@ThomasPornin I actually quite disagree with your answer. Only your 2nd point is a problem imo.
17:56
@TerryChia "It costs money" is not a problem ?
I suppose you never managed a private business, then.
@ThomasPornin Yes, but the issue is which cost more? Paying a one-time cash bounty to encourage people to report serious flaws or wait till you get exploited?
@TerryChia I got it covered in the answer, too (last item).
Plus most bug bounty programs are weighted according to the severity of the bug in question.
If the exploit is more expensive than the reward, then the bug-finder will take the exploit, not the reward.
@ThomasPornin Blackhats aren't gonna report bugs anyway. Bug bounty programs are targeted at honest researchers who does not want to resort to criminal activities.
17:59
@TerryChia Well, that's certainly what is hoped for. But claiming that it actually works that way requires a bit more evidence.
An actual advantage of bug bounty programs is that honest people who find security flaws will be more likely to report them -- not because of the reward, but because they will not have to fear that the vendor thinks of all bug reports as blackmail attempts and calls the cops.
It is unclear whether adding cash to that really induces more bugs to be found and reported.
also, how do you define illegal hacking attempts then if you actively encourage it?
18:18
@ThomasPornin yea but let's say the exploit is worth 2000 dollars and the reward 1500. Chances are the exploiter will prefer to get the 1500 because: it's something he can put on his cv and it doesn't get him into trouble. Obviously it's a tradeoff of risks which will decide if the exploiter would defect from what is legal or not.
@RoryAlsop @AviD Would attempting to bypass the rep cap get one's account suspended?
Note: I'm not planning to do it, I just had the idea and thought it was interesting.
things get ugly for software where the black market price of bugs is high
btw has anyone got a link of a black market ?
I'm really interested at prices
@LucasKauffman How cute!
@Adnan If you find a way to bypass the rep cap, you might want to report it to the SE people. They may have a bug-reward program.
18:21
@ThomasPornin Hehehehe... SE... bug-reward program.. hehehehe
@LucasKauffman There aren't really market websites
there are some bug dealers, such as thegruq
@Adnan Old trick. Think I had that figured out over a year ago either in here or Role-playing Games.
@Iszi Well, I guess I'm a bit slow then.
@ThomasPornin Since you hit the rep cap more often than any of us, do you wanna black-market buy it from me? :D
@Adnan I already have my way around the rep cap (namely, I have two accounts).
@LucasKauffman you have to account for income taxes also, blackhats don't really pay them, whitehats do... so the difference is fast increasing :P
18:24
@ThomasPornin Jihaaa, true true.
@ThomasPornin I wonder if they would call a sock-puppet foul if Little Bear were to give Big Bear all his rep through bounties, as long as they don't both have answers on the same question?
That would be a proper bypass.
@Adnan I don't think there is a way that isn't already a feature. For example, accepted answer points (the +15) and bounty rewards don't count towards the rep cap. You can therefore exceed it by getting 20 upvotes, plus accepted answers, plus bounties.
As I understand it, Jon Skeet regularly earns over 200 reputation a day doing exactly this.
@Iszi The rules for sockpuppets have not been published with all the needed clarity. In my book, this would be unethical.
@ThomasPornin you mean like adding bounty to questions you best answered anyway, then collecting additional rep that would be otherwise lost on the rep cap, plus a bounty in a few days time?
I mean, I even avoid doing reviews with Bear #2, because it would mean that I could approve an edit all by myself -- an edit that I actually have enough rep to do myself without needing any approval.
18:27
@AntonyVennard Well, I do understand the rep cap exemptions and I still think there is another way. It probably is indeed a feature, but I think it's an unintended one. It's actually pretty silly, no haxoring or anything.
@ThomasPornin Why would it be? Anyone else could do the same. As long as you don't have questions where both accounts have answered, it's all legitimately-earned rep that belongs to you.
(Heh, strictly speaking it's still legitimate even if you've answered the question twice - I've got one or two of those.)
@Adnan Well, try it and see. I don't think they'd punish you unduly for pointing out a flaw - they're a pretty reasonable bunch.
@Adnan Well, try it or spill it !
@AntonyVennard If they're of the same kind as the Meta.SO people, the heh :D
Okay, I'll try it.
I think all users over 20k should be exempt from the rep cap.
And mods.
18:30
@Iszi That actually defeats the purpose of the rep cap.
I think there should be no daily rep cap, only a per-post rep cap
@Adnan Which is...?
@Iszi Leveling the play field.
@Iszi Even with the rep cap I rule you all every day -- twice.
3
@Iszi Preventing Jon Skeet from causing int overflows
18:30
@Adnan I don't get it.
@Adnan Nah, they're not - they contribute there, but they're normally the voice of reason if anything.
@Adnan Above 20k, what "playing field" is there to really be "leveled". You've gotten all the privileges you can get without becoming a mod.
75
Q: What is the reasoning behind the reputation cap?

Graeme PerrowThere has been a lot of talk about the daily reputation cap and what counts and what doesn't count and so on. But why is there a cap at all? I've seen lots of questions about whether the cap number should be changed, or whether certain things should or should not apply to the cap, but I've never ...

@Iszi I think the intent is to give those of us with limited time the ability to contribute.
I propose that everyone above 20k rep that would want their rep cap removed first surrenders all their gathered rep to disable it.
18:32
Otherwise we could just rename the site to askthomaspornin.stackexchange.com and be done with it.
@AntonyVennard And who here really thinks we shouldn't? ;-)
Okay, quick. Somebody, upvote one of my answers. Don't worry, you'll take it back soon.
On a serious note, though, it does encourage quality answers, because you can either hit the rep cap with 20 one vote answers, or 5 four vote ones and so on. The idea is, I guess, to limit somebody from answering everything twice and gaining unlimited amounts of rep in really small amounts.
Okay, quick: EVERYBODY DOWN-VOTE ALL @Adnan's ANSWERS!
Yup, I've just bypassed the rep cap.
Yuuhooo! Somebody please confirm this for me, did it really happen or am I the only one seeing this because of some browser/cache thing.
@Adnan What happens if you head to security.stackexchange.com/reputation, head to the bottom and hit "recalc"?
@AntonyVennard I hate you :(
@Adnan Sorry. It would have hit you eventually anyway.
False positive! Everybody, get out of your bunkers and return to your homes.
18:41
@Adnan Now that's just discrimination against @Avi. His bunker IS is his house!
@AntonyVennard I think I have one more idea.
@Adnan For what it's worth, your profile for me still shows +210. I suspect that whenever the normalisation thing happens, this will correct itself.
Okay, how about this
@Adnan FYI, your rep and profile used to get quite out of sync. They used to do this:
Jeff Atwood on March 21, 2010

As previously discussed in Important Reputation Rule Changes, we are now beginning site-wide reputation recalculations on Stack Overflow, Server Fault, and Super User. You may see some changes in your own reputation, along with changes in other users’ reputation.

In addition to rebalancing question upvotes as +5 instead of their old value of +10, we also fixed the following minor bugs in the reputation system:

accepted answers and bounties were only partially immune to the rep cap before depending on the time of day you earned them, but they are fully immune now. upvotes can now “replace” missing rep lost to downvotes, up to the +200 daily reputation cap. …

Every so often and reputation disappeared. Just search for "rep recalc" on mso...!
If you want to bypass the rep cap by 10 rep:
1- Choose 10 answers that require editing, downvote them, freeing a 10-rep spot.
2- Wait until the next day, edit them.
3- Take back your 10 downvotes, thus earning back 10 rep back.
Theoretically, that should work. Right?
18:54
@TildalWave do you have that brilliant pic in large form (ie 1680x1050)....?
@RoryAlsop No, but if you want I can make a bigger one ;)
@TildalWave Should probably include "Ministry of Deh Fence" as the slogan underneath this time ;)
@TildalWave heh - was going to use it as my background wallpaper :-)
@RoryAlsop It's a crop from this one: i.sstatic.net/Hdwss.png so it should fit right in

Q: IT Security SE Logo Wallpaper

IsziJust wanted to post here, to officially request something that was mentioned in chat: An IT Security StackExchange wallpaper. I think the main site's "banner logo" (including: lion, shield, starburst, wings, "Tron lines", banner) would look great against its current backdrop color, as a full-s...

any other place with promo materials?
@Adnan It might, but I'd guess it'd be temporary, or you wouldn't get the rep back at all.
Rep is still denormalised, just not as much as it used to be.
19:01
@TildalWave perfect - I can GIMP it right in over the old bit
looks at the starwall, pauses, and rolls his eyes
@JeffFerland Isn't that normal for this room though?
JPEG washes the colours out a bit but the PNG was just too big :(
@AntonyVennard Lots of things are normal, thought still ridiculous. For example, single-round MD5 password hashing.
3
19:07
Awww, I'm all outta stars for the day.
@JeffFerland That's a good point.
@TildalWave That's beautiful. You should post it in the Wallpapers thread as an unofficial wallpaper.
@Iszi if you can spare the time then please do the honors, I need to run for a while ;)
Definitely time for a new profile photo, though.
@TildalWave I was about to say "no, I'll let you keep the rep" but then remembered this is Meta.
19:15
@Iszi Yeah, and in Meta we throw his ass down the /dev/null, right? That's how that works, I think.
4
Hahaha
nice jeff
@JeffFerland can I steal that one of you ?
@LucasKauffman Sure
@JeffFerland Actually it's pretty alright.
19:33
just noticed @nealmcb is almost at 10k too. Haven't seen him around chat for a while, but it looks like he visits the site still.
@RoryAlsop Now let's see, hmmm.. why would someone not come to the chat? :p
I don't think Neal much cared for our off-topicness
@Adnan I dunno. Seems attendance of old-time regulars has dropped off quite a bit since you started hanging around. ;-P
I'm not surprised. All those dildos @Adnan keeps posting must be alienating some people.
@Iszi I must say I agree
20:03
@RoryAlsop I hate myself.... I read the packet my teacher assigned turns out RSA was in there. On top of that they explain the certificates. Thankfully this wasn't a total waste of time because they explain how RSA actually works very poorly.
@Griffin :-/
@RoryAlsop My life sucks.
Where is that answer from @thomas about Ddos?
@RoryMcCune jup thanks :D

1 hour later…
@Iszi Cheers for posting it! :)
@JeffFerland ROFL I got the impression that's more true for meta.SO than here... there we're actually suggesting that the exact same people whose job is being as lazy as possible move their buts a bit more, so user pounding is kinda expected :)
22:36
@AntonyVennard for the record, my so-called "bunker" is my office. It is underneath (or rather, inside) my house.
dang, can't believe I missed a discussion about didloes. and I don't mean @Adnan.
Well, I wouldnt really have much to add to the discussion anyway. I don't have as much experience with them. Unlike @Adnan.
3
22:56
One to keep close by... for those awkward moments :)
23:25
> Once the cow's been milked, there's no squirting her cream back up her udders.
Game of Thrones is fun.
23:37
Doh I just realized that it doesn't let me review posts if I reached daily voting limit... now that suXor!
@AviD Next on my list... you're up to date with it, I assume? (I don't remember that line from previous episodes, I believe I would LOL)
@TildalWave watching the recentest episode right now.
Just finishing Zero Dark Thirty then I move to GoT. I expected ZDT to be a lot better, but it reeks of PC all over. Would be interesting to see the uncut version of it.
23:57
@AviD That's because Olenna is awesome.
