Q: An odd question

Charles HoskinsonI know facebook sells/trades my data with other entities as part of their business model, but I'm uncertain what this type of transaction is called and which companies purchase the data. Do you guys know?

Is that really on topic here? Thoughts?
@Xander no
@TildalWave I usually refer to that as a 'technical tap'
@Gilles Didn't think so. Thanks!
01:08
@Gilles Okay here is what I think is happening. Client requests connection to server. Server says okay. Client asks for certificate. Server sends it public key (encrypted with private key). Client sends public key to appropriate CA. CA decrypts it and sends appropriate response back confirming or denying certificate.
@Griffin no, the client never contacts the CA
The server doesn't send a public key, it sends a certificate
I'm sure the answers to your questions and the links you've been given cover that
@Gilles The links give to much info to piece all the parts together. Can you give me the process in the same format I told you my idea.
the certificate contains a signature by the CA of the assertion “237190649873 is example.com's public key”, where 237190649873 is the server's public key
the only way to produce such a certificate is to know the CA's private key, hence the certificate must come from the CA
and the client trusts the CA because it's been preloaded with a list of CAs to trust
01:22
@Gilles I understand that the CA is trusted that's great and all I understand they're signed. That's wonderful. My problem is what does the private key actually do. How is the certificate signed? I know it's signed by the private key but how is it signed so that the user knows that it's actually signed
People keep trying to sell me them instead of tell me about them.
I read this "Client has the public key for Thawte (and many other third party companies) stored in its computer — because these come with the computer. Thus, client can decrypt the validation information, prove the validation is from Thawte and verify that the public key is certified by Thawte. If Client trusts Thawte, then Client can trust that he/she is really communicating with Company. If Client doesn’t trust Thawte, or whatever Third Party company is actually being used, then the identity of who is running the computers to which Client is connecting is suspect.
Public-key cryptography refers to a cryptographic system requiring two separate keys, one of which is secret and one of which is public. Although different, the two parts of the key pair are mathematically linked. One key locks or encrypts the plaintext, and the other unlocks or decrypts the ciphertext. Neither key can perform both functions by itself. The public key may be published without compromising security, while the private key must not be revealed to anyone not authorized to read the messages. Public-key cryptography uses asymmetric key algorithms and can also be referred t...
the client knows the CA's public key, so it can check that the signature comes from the CA
here Alice is the CA and Bob is the client
instead of “I will pay $500”, the message is “237190649873 is example.com's public key”
@Gilles Here is a better question. Does alice have a private key?
bob
Sorry bob
@Griffin yes, the CA has a private key
114
Q: How do certification authorities store their private root keys?

lynksKnowledge of a CA private key would allow MitM attackers to transparently supplant any certificates signed by that private key. It would also allow cyber criminals to start forging their own trusted certificates and selling them on the black market. Given the huge profits that could be made with...

Bob doesn't have a key of his own
(he might have one, but it isn't used by the basic protocol we're looking at here)
So I can encrypt this with one key and decrypt it with another?
@Griffin there is no encryption going on here
01:32
Sign and verify though?
yeah, I know the picture says “sign (encrypt)”, but that's both technically improper and pedagogically confusing
the CA signs the certificate with the CA's private key
the client verifies the certificate with the CA's public key
that's something else: a key derivation protocol
So what's the math behind the first picture. I know that basic math behind the second.
SSL has something of this kind, but it's not related to authenticating the server
RSA is an algorithm for public-key cryptography that is based on the presumed difficulty of factoring large integers, the factoring problem. RSA stands for Ron Rivest, Adi Shamir and Leonard Adleman, who first publicly described the algorithm in 1977. Clifford Cocks, an English mathematician, had developed an equivalent system in 1973, but it was classified until 1997. A user of RSA creates and then publishes the product of two large prime numbers, along with an auxiliary value, as their public key. The prime factors must be kept secret. Anyone can use the public key to encrypt a message...
01:34
Why can't the message be "encrypted" with the public key?
That might be it.
RSA is what I needed
02:03
02:15
@Gilles is there any explanation why Goldbach's conjecture graph distribution seemingly follows Fibonacci sequence? I'm curious if there's anything in the number theory explaining this distribution, or if it could be used to predict large primes?

Q: How to securely hash passwords?

AviDIf I hash passwords before storing them in my database, is that sufficient to prevent them being recovered by anyone? I should point out that this relates only to retrieval directly from the database, and not any other type of attack, such as bruteforcing the login page of the application, keylo...

go on, help a fellow out, wotcha? /shameless self promotion

oo, this looks nice - combining another two of my favorite things: 7 Ways To Caffeinate Your Grill
07:17
we've got a tagger
he does about 10 daily
most of them are poor quality, nearly all are bullet pointed (awful for tag wikis)
of the last 7 I reviewed from him, I rejected 3 and heavily edited 2. so only 2/7 approved.
yeah, saw some of those. Looked stoopid. On the lighter side, though, I found new reject reasons.
@StackExchange I don't get it...? anybody want to explain?
except for things like Huntington, and the Springfield MonoRail! Hahahah!
07:55
MONORAIL! MONORAIL!
08:58
And am on mobile so difficult to work with, but the brava tars look remarkably identical:security.stackexchange.com/questions/33938/…
Will get back to a pc soon, but happy if other mod has a wee look
@RoryAlsop added a response
@RoryAlsop brava tars... nice autocorrect :)
@RoryMcCune is... that supposed to be avatars?
See these iPad things - gahhhh
Gravatars!
Bear Tiaras?
Bravehearts?
09:06
@avid - nearly got that gold. I'm sure I had previously upvoted that question. It may have been reversed in the Sock Disaster of 2011
SCOOOTTLAAAANNDD!!!
@RoryAlsop hehe, "Sock Disaster". Amusing.
And yeah, those too look like socks - same IP, no email available but both assigned same gravatar. The 2nd one is a new user, signed up today.
Have left a quick comment.
Hopefully they may heed the warning
In fact, should that answer actually be a comment. It is a bit low quality
@RoryAlsop ah cool, I teachered it.
@RoryAlsop hmm, no more so than the question.
I'm not sure if its actually more SU than here. borderline.
btw the Teachers tell me that when there is no email, the gravatar is an MD5 of the IP. So that is only a single coincidental datapoint, not two - might be cowirkers or something.
09:16
Oh. I will apologise if he comes back refuting my scurrilous statement.
Thinking on it further - the question and answer are also Too Localised.
@AviD I'm guessing he was going for gravatars... and if I read the rest of the transcript I wouldn't have just said that.
@RoryMcCune lol
HEY! when somebody makes a mistake, we jump all over them and run with it to the hills. That's just what we do. You should know that.
Bear tiaras on the hills!
@RoryAlsop I snapped a quality portal submission on the way home. Fair Isle from the Ferry :)
@RoryAlsop I left another comment.
Taking a couple weeks "off" really helps build up a stockpile of patience to waste.
The more I look at them, I think they are NOT socks, just cows.
@RoryAlsop really? not a great Q, sure, but think its more NaRQ or OT than TL.
09:25
Thanks @AviD - I think using an iPad uses up patience... I have deleted my comment as yours is much more pleasant.
@rory - nice. A float-by attack
@RoryAlsop YOU HAVE TO FIND A WEB ATTACK TO CALL THAT.
@RoryAlsop heh, I can imagine.
these newfangled technologies...
@AviD gsad is a bit specific. But I agree, that user does have a few that seem like SO may be a better home
I bought my dad the first version ipad for his 70th. He loves it, uses it all the time, but he gets very frustrated with it.
I'm always worried he's going to tap all the way through it.
Coffee time. Will improve after that as I get back to a pc. Pity I can't use my nexus here - it is just... Bettererer
@RoryAlsop Does anybody have an iPad-to-English translator?
09:30
@RoryAlsop can't tether the nexus to your phone?
@AviD +1 :)
w00t!!
okay, lolwat?
@RoryAlsop so they both changed their gravatars, and the 2nd user changed his name. Also, while the first one did not change his username, he did change his "real name".
I am thouroughly confused.
Anyway. Coffee I mean, work time now.
10:04
Mmmm. Papua New Guinea Sigri. yummy.
10:18
@avid - probably confirms your cow-orkers theory...
@rorym - yes, but then I'd be carrying iPad,blackberry,S3 and nexus everywhere.....
@RoryAlsop One device to manage them, one device to tether, one device to rule them all....
2
And in the darkness format them
2
Very nice - I think your avatar requires a long white beard (bear-d?), a cloak and a staff
10:34
heh, no thanks - I was never a Rings fan.
I think I may even have gotten the misquote wrong....
I'll take the cloak though - easier access to my staff ;-)
much like a kilt
> Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
That's the full quote.
yes yes, I have wikipedia too.
Hey, most people only know the short version. :P
I really like LOTR.
Both the movies and the book.
So, according to this, @RoryAlsop you need to start carrying NINE devices.
@TerryChia go for 7, @Adnan would need 3.
@ThomasPornin would only need one, of course.
Hahahahaha
10:40
@RoryAlsop yeah you can never have too many bits of kit on you :) The missus is travelling with both surfaces these days (in case one runs out of charge..)
Get one o them thar battery packs I was talking about. I get almost 4 days Ingress out of one with my phone
@RoryAlsop 4 days? That's it? You need to get one of those Ghostbusters-style backpack battery packs. You'd go 3 weeks, at least. Unless you use Flash a lot.
10:55
Ingress is VERY battery intensive. Continuous GPS, continuous data transfer, loading maps, and heavy use of animations and particle effects
It EATS batteries
Without ingress I get two days from my phone under normal usage. With ingress I may get 3 hours. The battery pack is essential. 12000mAh
So you're saying that Ingress development is actually a conspiracy by the battery pack vendors? I guess that would explain their business model.
Benefits for google/vendors include: battery sales, battery performance data, map data, position of sculptures/monuments etc, connectivity data, etc
And for the tinfoil-hatters, people links, walking routes, identification of workplace and home...
11:17
not to mention telco/ISP download rates...

Q: Use additional "password" in Referer to hide private site?

unorI have a private (= I'm the only user) site at example.com/private/. Nothing else is published at this host (it's my domain). I don't want anyone to know that there is anything at example.com, especially not my private site. Now let's say Alice "guesses" the URL and visits example.com/private/....

We have any meme like don't be a Dave for Apache wizards?
@AviD 3 what?! I need 3 what?!
@TildalWave Actually, I think he's doing alright.
He has the underlying login method secured, he just want to add a layer of obscurity. Nothing wrong with that.
@Adnan Oh bollo*s I didn't notice that! Yeah, good morning!
I just had to delete 3 paragraphs of don't be a Dave :))
11:51
@Adnan So how was your weekend? Had any better luck with the weather than we did?
@TildalWave The weather was actually pretty nice. About -1C, but clear sky, sun shining.
It snowed for a couple of hours Yesterday
We had a BBQ
Nice weekend overall.
@Adnan well I'm glad to hear that! I had to sit-in in protest against the April weather LOL
@TildalWave Well, then here's one to salt your wounds.
@Adnan hehe nice thanks :) Never had a BBQ in the snow before, tho. Wait... shouldn't you have like thousands of lakes there? Or is that in the other part of the country?
@Adnan devices. Read upwards.
12:04
@TildalWave Try tens of thousands of lakes. But this was in a in the city.
It was in the upper 60s and lower 70s all weekend. I got a fair bit of yard work done. I think it's really time to break out the grill.
Pah, we have already had barbecues this year. Some of them weren't even in the rain. There is still snow in the garden, but it might be gone by next week as it is sunny and over 3 degrees today. Lovely balmy spring weather!
Ding-dong the witch is dead!
I am a bit upset actually, she was a hero to those of us with a Falklands connection
I know she did a lot of other things, some of which may not have been good, but she was involved in quite a few of my teenage formative experiences
@avid - just had a look at my highest scores. 49 for questions, 42 for answers. I'm quite jealous at your nearly 100...
@RoryAlsop Didn't check the news but I'm guessing you're talking about Thatcher?
Oh.. yup.. I hate checking the news first thing in the morning.. always brings me down
12:17
@TildalWave Do you think I need to add anything to this?
@avid - had to convert two more of chrisc's answers to comments as they are one liners with very little value. Have left him comments that mirror yours.
@tildal - yes. Had a stroke and passed away.
@RoryAlsop y'mean, over 30 degrees, right....?
I don't know those strange terms. I use proper temperatures, with an offset of 273 degrees when communicating with normal humans :-)
@RoryAlsop Well we have a saying that you're only allowed to speak good about the dead, so all I'm gonna say is that with the current economic climate... more people will actually miss her around. Please don't jump on me for saying this! :P
hehe, actually its not that hot here. Yet.
12:21
@RoryAlsop 273.15*
I need to get A/C installed in my office pretty soon....
I prefer to hang out with the grill while it's heating and cooking. Doing that in the cold or rain is less than ideal.
It was finally warn enough for me to want to leave my windows open last night. Glorious.
@RoryAlsop did I leave a comment? I dont remember.
@Adnan you need an anonymizer script to get rid of that extra password token in the referer if an external link is clicked... or simply just redirect to a non-token URL on login... any of these would do, but I prefer anonymizer
I usually dont bother with non-registered users. Figure if they cant be bothered to register, they probably wont bother reading my comments, or adjusting accordingly.
12:23
For normal rain, you bbq as normal; with heavy rain you put on a coat; When it is very heavy rain here, you use your non cooking hand to hold an umbrella; once it gets very heavy you get someone else to hold it. Simple
just in case you've all been living under a rock today
THATCHER IS FINALLY DEAD
Read up a few lines
@Polynomial Did Anonymous do it?
ah yes
@AviD They've yet to claim credit, but it's inevitable
@RoryAlsop How many inches per hour do you consider a heavy rain?
12:24
@Polynomial that's ridiculously awful.
Was she really so hated over there?
yes.
you should see the BBC facebook page comments
@Polynomial That's just mean.
@Adnan if you want I can pastebin a javascript version for you
@Polynomial late to the party as usual.
@AviD she ruined thousands of family lives with absolutely zero remorse.
and destroyed the economy of large areas of the country
12:25
@TildalWave Sure, I'd love to take a look at that.
so, not so different from most senior politicians. What's your point?
@AviD she closed off the mines, ruining britain's export economy for a decade, and causing massive unemployment, and answered for her crimes by retiring to a nice big mansion and laughing at poor people.
@scott - not sure actually. When rain gets to Blatt levels it feels quite heavy, but in Scotland it just flows away so floods are rare ( most places )
@ScottPack 2 gallons per square potatoes.
no politician in the UK has ever had such a massively negative impact
12:26
@Polynomial oh come on, we all laugh at poor people ;-)
and she pissed off Scotland a fair bit too
@AviD her definition of poor was "can't afford a yacht for your holiday home"
hehe
I'm furiously refreshing Frankie Boyle's twitter feed, waiting for him to catch onto the news.
Hmmm - @poly - I rate her annoyance as pretty much the same as all politicians. Whether they are labour or tory
@RoryAlsop this
12:28
They all aim to further their own career at the expense of any group of individuals
Interesting headline on the BBC: Live-Baroness Thatcher Dies
Seems a bit gruesome
haha
living dead
or, in her case, evil dead
@Adnan pastebin.com/1Ku8QdfL (you need to set two variables, they're at the top of the script with instructions)
@Adnan This script will just call an external app that does the redirection, but that's trivial to write in any language... it will leave alone the internal links and only replace href on external links... if you use externally linked contents, then you'd have to modify it for src as well ;)
@RoryAlsop Ok, so I looked up what Blatt means, but I still don't understand.
@ScottPack probably autocorrect. He likely meant Butt levels.
12:43
@AviD Wouldn't that meet the definition of flooding?
I'm so cornfused
heh, cornfused - that's a whole new level of confusion. Hillbilly level.
Hahahahahaha. Blatt is the noise it makes when the water comes down so hard it pummels you
isnt it spelled Bliat?
or is that just in Russian.
@AviD "The wavering cry made by a sheep, goat, or calf."
Not sure how that translates to the sound the rain is making tho... but Blat is german for a paying card or a sheet of paper... in slang we also use it as "full out"
@TildalWave it is properly spelled "блять".
heh. Bing translate filters bad words and changes that to "Cool dude"???
12:49
@AviD ok funny that I can read that, because we don't use cyrillic here :P but what you wrote would be read as blyat in English... sounds a bit like bleah which is... yeah, about the meaning of it
never heard of a German word "Blat"
@TildalWave yeah, I guess it could be with a Y instead of an I. same word though
Hiya
there is Blatt for sheet of paper
@CodesInChaos No? You've never made cakes then :P
@CodesInChaos ah yes, spelling
sry :(
12:51
Not familiar with your other meanings. Never heard Blatt in such a context
@CodesInChaos I'm not from Germany ;) We often use german words in their archaic meaning, I guess this would be one of them... mostly we use Blatt for torten blatt, but also full out in the northern parts of the country. Tho, it also sounds quite similar to our word blat (colloquial for mud), so I guess that could be also for situations when there's too much rain.
OK, turns out it can be translated as blade: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Blatt
I guess it somehow transformed here to on the edge... and maybe my full out analogy wasn't the best one to use
13:11
Talking about the origins of words, @RoryAlsop should remember their true intended use :)
@TildalWave He invented the concept of writing and speaking anyway.

Q: Can I determine if my computer has a key logger installed?

PlutorA friend of mine just started a job at a security sensitive company. They've provided him with a laptop with Windows XP Professional installed. He's heard a rumor from other employees that the laptops may have key loggers installed. Is there any way for him to confirm or disprove this allegation?...

Could we protect this question on grounds of having a nice bounty on it (that's obviously going to @Iszi) and excellent answers already. I just think it might attract more bottom-feeders
@TildalWave Dammit, he is gonna shoot pass me in the monthly charts. :(
@TerryChia oh you two are still competing? But no, actually the OP would have to accept his answer too (for you two to be equal for the month)
@TildalWave Not really competing no. But it's still sad. :P

@TerryChia Have you met this dude?
@Adnan Reptrain-whore!
13:34
@TerryChia yes but that question is brilliant, it's impossible for you to think of such questions, your knowledge stands in the way of their conception and your self-respect in the way of ever asking it
@Adnan ICONS! :))))
I like how chrome has become more metro-like, even on windows 7.

Only 1 more vote left for the day :( stop rep-whoring! LOL
I can't believe I made so many grammatical mistakes
Come on, people! Add an answer or two to this question

@Adnan Could you be more subtle? :P
@Adnan Is "Brace yourself" actually part of the meme? I can't recall those words in either the books or the show.
@Adnan BTW, while we're on the subject: 187 up votes!! I think you could do better :P
@TerryChia No, not really. It's only "Winter is coming"
14:02
@Adnan Yeah, that's what I thought. :)

A: Pre Installed OpenVAS , light way Linux

Terry ChiaKali Linux, the succesor to Backtrack offers a mini version of the distribution that is only 400MB. Alternatively, just build the package on any lightweight linux distributions like Arch Linux. Do note that I have encountered many issues with configuring OpenVAS in the past, to the points where...

@Adnan yeah but there's too easy, I gave up on sorting things up on SO when they're (problems from SO) then slowly trickling to other sub-sites anyway
Heh, not sure why this is downvoted.
14:09
@TerryChia I'll look into it
@Adnan Do you suddenly have some mysterious powers I am unaware of? :)
@TerryChia Oh no, downvotes (and upvotes) are supposed to be anonymous.
@TerryChia Have you checked OP's voting stats? He only posts questions and has voted 2 times up and 10 times down, 7 times on answers
But I can understand the downvote actually
@TildalWave Wow. I think that might be the first time I've seen someone say "I wish I could +500" and then actually do it when they find out how they can. And it's for one of my posts? Sweet!
14:12
@Adnan Butbutbut... I answered the question! :((((
(Fair disclosure: I'm probably guilty a few times of being one of those people who says they wish they could do that, and never does.)
@Iszi Only fair to star that then ;)
@Iszi This is how I treat my rep.

@TerryChia I'm with you there, at least until I finally break the 10k barrier.
@TerryChia there... used my last vote for the day on you, happy now? :P
14:15
@TildalWave Cheers. :)
@Iszi Given your recent activity levels, I'll probably hit 10k before you. :P
@Iszi +1 = 10 rep. +500 = 5000 rep :D
@Adnan True enough. So, I'd need that guy to post 10 bounties of the current amount.
@TerryChia like an ugly freak of nature?
oh sorry, didnt realize that was a picture of you.
@TerryChia this +1000 rep privilege (being able to see voting stats) only makes me run out of votes faster trying to repair damage the hillbillies do when they first enter the kindergarten sandbox
@Iszi Sadly, he had only 1.5k
14:17
And he can't nearly afford that - jeez, he's only got a little over 1k as it is and he's giving me 500?!
@Iszi You should feel bad he paid 33% of his rep to you.
@AviD You talking about your mom/face?
@TildalWave You need 3k. That's the fun one.
@TildalWave I have just checked the anonymizer. Pretty neat actually. I like it
@Adnan At least he's got the balls to put his rep where his mouth is.
@TerryChia If you're offering help you know where to start :P
14:19
@TildalWave There, +3. :)
@Adnan I don't have one for src as well... never had the need for it, but should be considered
@Iszi The words "balls", "put", "mouth" shouldn't be put in one sentence in The DMZ.
4
Don't wanna trigger the detection script.
@Adnan I was about to say...
@Adnan No, this is exactly the place I'd expect that to happen.
14:20
@AviD You know what they say, great minds.
@Iszi Better than having the rep to put your balls where your mouth is.
4
@Polynomial All that is missing from that sentence is "ass" and "cactus".
2
@TerryChia pineapple! it's a bloody pineapple! (you'll realize why when you next see one ;) :P
@Polynomial Daaamn. That's a good one.
@TildalWave This reminded me of one girl.
14:26
@Adnan One girl with three balls in her mouth?
2
@Adnan you like your women to have floppy ears and spotted noses?
You know.. I really should remind myself that this is a public chatroom and I am using my real name.
oh noes. we wuz haxored by Anonermus.
@TerryChia This will come bite us in this ass at one point.
14:29
Probably my fault. They are targeting all Israel now.
I've heard some cracking jokes about Thatcher today
"First Saville, now Thatcher? A great 12 months for minors!"
@AviD I hardly think that anti-Israel person would write "I'm Allah, bow to me bitches"
"Sounds like a stroke of good luck to me!"
@Adnan unless they were unreligious anti israel....
"Thatcher has first ever sexual encounter. The excitement literally kills her."
14:31
whatevs, I was making fun of Anonermus, not Muslims.
@AviD ernernemers
@AviD Duuude, make fun of whoever you want. I just think it's stupid that anyone would consider this a form of activism.
sorry, did I miss drama?
It's juvenile.
linkies!
14:33
@Adnan I don't disagree. But that is the type of stuff we're seeing here this week... :S
well, some of it, anyway.
"Thatcher dies. Anonymous takes credit."
best headline ever
@AviD Really? I've heard about OpIsrael only today. So is it just posting comments like that?
It's very not-so-Anonymousy
Or is there any DDoSing?
@AviD Yuuhuuuuu.. still here?
@Adnan He probably got DDoSed.
@Adnan Naw, this is a rep-train:

5 answers in 15 minutes. Wow.
@Polynomial You have enough rep. Leave some for the mortals. Shoo!

I can't see it rep training due to good answers. I can see it rep training due to controversy.
