10:00 PM
@AdamMcKissock remember to only state your rank and number to the @Rory

@LucasKauffman Adam McKissock, Sergeant, 0031337.

@AdamMcKissock "Et vous n'êtes que sergent ? Mais vous avez tous les défauts requis pour accéder aux honneurs les plus vils !"

@ThomasPornin Tu n'es pas vraiment gentil dit

@LucasKauffman It was a quote from an old movie.

@ThomasPornin What movie is that?

10:06 PM

@ThomasPornin That looks awful
Almost as awful as my french

It was a movie from a time when even Rory the Elder was somewhat youngish
at that time, they knew how to write dialogues.

@AdamMcKissock Remember: "Omelette du fromage"

They had invented the film camera back then?
Cheese Omelette?

@AdamMcKissock Oh yes. But the world was still in black and white.
@AdamMcKissock No, that one would be "Omelette au fromage".

10:08 PM
@LucasKauffman is that a quote? If not: french.stackexchange.com/questions/5798/…

"Omelette du fromage" would be a piece of cheese who happens to own an omelette.

Plausible
あなたの日本語の使い方です?

@AdamMcKissock 存在しない

@Gilles Haha
@Gilles 非実在 is what you would want

10:20 PM
@Gilles you never watched dexter I guess?

@LucasKauffman no

10:50 PM
too difficult words for me -_-

@ScottPack Got it

Creeper.
I'm going to go eat dinner now.

Creeper?
Push mail makes me a creeper?

11:22 PM

@RoryAlsop That is the most annoying thing ever in minecraft

@LucasKauffman what? Creepers? Naww
On our server, the others like to do their building/architecture/farming etc - my job is to run around at night with a sword and taunt creepers. Sometimes I use them as useful mining tools :-)

@RoryAlsop it is, you just finish building something and then suddenly pssssshhhh
didn't know you guys have a server?

@LucasKauffman heh heh heh - you can almost always run fast enough to avoid them exploding, as long as your reflexes are ready to go instantly
@LucasKauffman One of my secretaries runs a small private server, and my gaming clan has one
I gather the Arqade has one too

@RoryAlsop One of your secretaries. ಠ_ಠ

11:32 PM
@ScottPack what? :-)
team administrator folks

How big, exactly, is your ahem team?

@ScottPack Well - it's difficult to pin it down. Globally, maybe only 4000 (of a total workforce of 152,000) - UK maybe 100, Scotland -15 (but reducing in March)

@RoryAlsop at PwC?
are you a director?

@LucasKauffman In activity yes, in title no - one of the various reasons I am moving onwards. I have a much bigger team at EY (as in reporting directly to me) whereas here I only have responsibility for a handful.

@RoryAlsop Negative 15 in Scotland?

11:39 PM
are you responsible for PwC security globally ?

@AdamMcKissock lol
@LucasKauffman god no
that wouldn't pay enough
@AdamMcKissock by end of March - possibly only 2 left in Scotland :-)
(focused on Security only)

@RoryAlsop Wanna buy me a new PC? :P

@RoryAlsop I see

but they are hiring rapidly - so it could be back up at 5 or 6

hire and fire

11:40 PM
some junior roles, some middle management, and one to replace me I think
@LucasKauffman ... a few folks got better offers
and I have been doing this for nearly 17 years - figured it was about time I cut down to <50 hr weeks

@RoryAlsop of course, but that's not what they tell us :P

and maybe get paid for overtime

@RoryAlsop you don't get paid for overtime?
well our executives dont get overtime paid either I guess

@LucasKauffman nope - haven't since my first year in EY.
After that, even as a manager - we'd get paid for 37.5 and work 80 - 100 hrs, which does mean the nice salary doesn't look so good on a per hour rate

I think in Belgium EY is the only big 4 still paying overtime, I think that's because otherwise none of the financial auditors would be mad enough to perform 80 hour weeks

11:43 PM
@LucasKauffman That's the beauty of being a salaried employee.

Don't get me wrong, it's still not bad, but considering my take home during my time at EY worked out at 0.02% of the amount I made the firm.....

@RoryAlsop holy fuck, I thought 60 hours were a lot to do in a week

I feel a rant coming on - time to hit the sack I reckon
night all

@RoryAlsop y u no become partner?

@LucasKauffman Only got down to 60-ish this year. Which gave me an extra 30hrs a week to do stuff with the band, Stack Exchange, family etc

11:44 PM
nn!

@LucasKauffman would hate that - I'm not the type

@RoryAlsop but you'd get the money :p

@RoryAlsop I'm surprised no one's asked you to be their partner. You seem like quite a catch.

@LucasKauffman and the risk, and even more hours away from the family
@ScottPack hahahahahaha

60 hour weeks dont sound amazingly bad

11:45 PM
@AdamMcKissock 60 is easy
it sin't so good when you are also flying long haul every week
and never seeing daylight/the wife/kids

@RoryAlsop or time to spend your money

100+ sucks big time
you just start making mistakes
@LucasKauffman it's okay - a family can spend that for you :-)

I think I could be ok doing 50, but even 60 is much more time than I want to spend on the job.

@RoryAlsop They don't allow us to do several 50+ hour weeks in a row here (booked hours)

@RoryAlsop What is this "daylight" you speak of?

11:48 PM
@LucasKauffman In the UK, despite the working time directive, it is just part of any professional services firm - if you do not work those hours you will not progress

@RoryAlsop is that the actual time you are on the job or including commute?

@LucasKauffman actual time on the job

Our HR division states that if you're consistently working more than 45 hours per week then your management needs to fix whatever the problem is.

here the only company actually renowned for that type of hours is McKinsey

in fact my worst hours were on a job 10 miles from home. Over 100hrs per week for 4 months...over winter. I only saw my kids for about 3 hrs that Boxing Day

11:49 PM
@RoryAlsop if you work more than 60 hours a week for more than 3 weeks, you can't legally drive home anymore

@ScottPack the problem is demand outstripping supply
@LucasKauffman here it's McKinsey and Logica, then the Big-4

@RoryAlsop Oh, I'm not implying that the problem gets fixed (or that he problem isn't the employee), just that there exists an HR policy regarding it.

@ScottPack lol

@ScottPack around here we have laws saying that

@Gilles theoretically we do here, only you can opt out - and part of the role requires opting out

11:51 PM
@Gilles Well, it seems like France has lots of other oddities regarding employment....

in France I think only upper management can opt out

here it's the executives so any title that has manager in it

right - really am going to bed now
see you tomorrow

@RoryAlsop good night

@RoryAlsop Sweet dreams.

11:54 PM
@Gilles is "opt out" not a euphemism for putting a gun to your head?

@AdamMcKissock no, in fact it's statutory

statutory suicide?

@LucasKauffman here “upper management” is defined as having enough responsibilities and earning $$$$

@AdamMcKissock Meaning, you have to paint yourself grey and strike a pose before killing yourself.

@AdamMcKissock no, the communist revolution failed in France :(

11:56 PM
@Gilles I heard not much of those left in france these days, they are all migrating over here :P

what, communist revolutions?

@LucasKauffman At least they arent in europe anymore.

@Gilles people earning a lot $$$$
they all come to live in a border town to evade that new tax that was imposed
