The biggest problem with that transport mode are round-trip-times and packet loss due to hawk.

It is specifically UDP, so the protocol doesn't need to account for retransmits (which is good!).

When I was still a full time student, my advisor ran a yearly advanced networking course (CS 644). It, for the most part, a reading group where we would plow through an RFC or a thesis or some such. Then discuss it. Lots of fun

@packs I see no mention of UDP. It is IP, and can be used underneath UDP/TCP/HTTP/whatever....

Though the delay issues are indeed formidable....

Yeah, it's pretty nasty. Said advisor's primary work is all in interplanetary networking. We've done some fun stuff like simulating satellite links between Earth and Mars. Then making TCP work on that haul.

Also, that's happened to be on SF before.

I answered the question asked, had it accepted, then later the question was edited so much that it became completely different.

Then the asker unaccepted my question, and left an asshole comment about how my answer was stupid and doesn't even apply.

@packs well at least when you read that answer, there is a visual indication that it was edited and a history. In this case, the view of the Wildebeest post has no indication that it has been changed. You'd have to click on it to find the original and then click on the edit marker, and you still wouldn't know which version was starred.

I blame it on @RoryAlsop's inherent distrust of all things colonial.

@packs I just saw your name on a bunch of posts. Can't remember if it was the "newest" or "active" view though. If it was the "newest" then that would indicate you probably had done some edits to the question. Maybe it was "active" which would mean that you'd posted answers or comments.

I think having a comment along with an edit can be helpful, and it is only this odd situation where a starred chat comment can be changed after being starred that was bugging me. So what do you think of my further edits to the faq bit with a more diverse set of contexts (intl, language, topic)?

@nealmcb Yep - liked them. I popped that sentence in after the Be Specific line - thought it fit best there. Seem reasonable?

@nealmcb regarding ninja edits, yeah it is a bit worrying. @packs and I were chatting about it yesterday wrt off-colour jokes so I thought I'd pop in some nonsense and then edit it back. Interesting that it changes in the *'ed bit in the sidebar as well. You would have to trawl history for the real story.

@packs - yes FAW=FAQ. We just got chatting late on one evening after a basic spelling mistake, and it snowballed :-)

@RoryAlsop Ahh - I didn't see that - thanks! I was still focussed on the stuff I had replaced with that text, which still seems a bit redundant. Also I liked describing the bullet list as the threat model/risk profile, followed by the stuff on context. And also note the dash before "Be Specific" and a typo in there about "thr eat". So I'd still just make it look like the text in the answer, FWIW

@nealmcb Always worth many eyes to spot the typos - the FAW editable section is all raw html, and the formatting in the edit box is not ideal, so it can be tricky to catch them all. Updated the redundant section to fit better.

Anyone here disagree that NIST SP 800-53 would be a useful response to the "corporate policy" question?

@RoryAlsop Given all the confusion about a threat model, I'll just put in another plug for how the bullet list seems like a threat profile, but the context sentence (which is now called a threat model) doesn't. And the sentence structure there is wrong.

The thing about 800-53 is, it's more of a template than a policy on its own. I don't know about corporations that use it, but I know there's some government entities.
