@RoryAlsop, i consider security.stackexchange.com/a/9290/665 to be the most practical answer for most parents.
well among, lockup the keyboard.

@Hendrik should we reopen? It was flagged for close originally.
I think that answer should be undeleted.

i.e. coming here?
@RoryAlsop @HendrikBrummermann If you're talking about the answer I think you are, my problem is that it appears to conflict with our "anti-blackhat" policy. Sure, the answers are perhaps the most practical for most parents (Although, who really wants to go through the trouble of hooking and un-hooking up all those cables whenever they want to use their own computer?) but it also spends more focus on methods that can be used to bypass other security measures than it does really on the fix.
Even after the edit, it still reads more like "I could hack around all that, and here's how I'd do it" than "here's how to keep your son off his computer when he doesn't belong on it".
@Iszi, the answer says "Simply lock the door of the room containing the computer;-)".
It got 40 votes, which might be a bit proportional. But I think it is the only answer that is helpful to average parents.
@Ninefingers I think it is more suitable for us.
19:03
@HendrikBrummermann Are we talking about the same answer and the same question?
This is the one I don't like...

A: How can I prevent my kids from bypassing my computer restrictions based on Windows Vista?

BradIf I was your son, the ONLY way to prevent booting from a DVD is to physically remove the drive. (google DVD drive replacement and your laptop's model number. It's usually just a few screws to get to it and takes about 30 seconds. Keep the drive in your car locked and check it daily, or just leav...

19:14
No, i am talking about a deleted answer which I quoted in full.
@HendrikBrummermann Ah. That's hardly an actual answer, though. I mean, sure it would work but it leaves out all the reasons why it is necessary and it also is operating under the presumption that the computer is in a room which can be locked.
I think I might have suggested leaving it as a comment unless the answerer wanted to flesh it out.
19:29
@HendrikBrummermann thought so, gonna send it over.

Would some blog editors care to have a gander at this? security.blogoverflow.com/?p=513&preview=true
@ScottPack That's a nice 404 page you've got there. Would be cooler if we had a security-specific picture though.
Bah. Where's that login page again?
There we go. Works better if you're logged in. Dunno why I wasn't.
21:21
@Iszi security.blogoverflow.com/wp-admin
But, yes, that's quite the 200 there when you're logged in. And a beautifully accurate 404 otherwise.
@ScottPack Remind me why we don't have a link on the main blog page?
Wow. Apparently it's been awhile since I merged my VM snapshots.

I always wondered what I would do if I ever had kids, maybe I'd just give them a pc with linux and just lynx to browse, after a year I give them their own computer on which he can try to put gentoo or lfs
if he can do that he's mature enough for the whole www
22:52
@Iszi I think it's a SEI thing. Whenever a blog post is published the chat link, on the top bar, is replaced with the blog link.
Also, there's a link to the blog on the footer. We've talked about how lame those are, though.
@ScottPack No, I mean why isn't there a link to the blog login page anywhere?
Oh, that. Because we hate you.

@ScottPack Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Speaking of. Time to go back to real life.
@ScottPack Eh? Wazzat?
