well crap...the paragraph form and sentence structure is similar...but I see your point. I guess TL;DR isn't a very valid excuse — Chad Baxter 8 mins ago
OK so that's sorted then :)

morning
Was looking at the Privacy stack exchange - could be a useful site but very slow going through definition phase. Anyone interested?

Privacy

Proposed Q&A site for people interested in the regulation and protection of privacy in a world of ever-increasing complexity.

Currently in definition.

08:29
@DavidFreitag Dammit EU!
Someone needs to slap them in the face. With a router.
08:39
@RoryAlsop Area51 is a slow process. Penmanship reached 18 follower btw
@DavidFreitag of course they did - they don't represent common voters, they get their funds from large corporates - who want net neutrality to go away
@DavidFreitag well, no. My car will out accelerate most Lambos in the 0-60 phase. And has a top speed of over 195. But it corners incredibly well. For me dV/dt is the only important performance
I use its acceleration potential all the time. Its velocity potential, not so much :-)
Mornin'
Hey @RоryMcCune
@TildalWave The person who approved that edit should have their edit privileges revoked
@M'vy hi, how's tricks with you today?
@NateKerkhofs If you like metal I could drag you along to some shows. You always meet new people there.
08:54
@RоryMcCune deceptive
@M'vy heh
:)
Misdirection is my second language
Morn' @RоryMcCune
@Arperum and if @NateKerkhofs could get on a bus to Edinburgh, I'm playing a gig on Halloween (yes, @Simon, I said Hallo - ween) and it's all good fun
@RoryAlsop I'm not going to join him though, I have a filled weekend already :)
3rd consecutive day of working at home with only builders for company - going stir crazy
09:05
Although @NateKerkhofs ould join me and whoever else happens to be there in Ghent on friday evening for a free folkmetal show with afterparty.
Day 1 - demolition of my entire bathroom, including man weilding hammer to break up every tile! I wanted that job :-(. Day 2 - new bathroom walls and shower tray.
Day 3 - tilers coming today. Jim and John. A double act...
@RoryAlsop stop enabling !
hahaha - I only noticed it as I wrote it, and realised I missed @Simon's retorts. Wait, that came out wrong...
;-)
@RoryAlsop Ok I guess I should stop enabling you
How is the morning for you, anyway @M'vy
09:09
Fine fine. Fighting the odds and gods of Qt4 graphics
@M'vy Quicktime4?
With a salt of HMI design and pepper of software conception
@Arperum Qt library (c++)
@M'vy - I think Sue is a fan of yours. Or maybe just very enthusiastic about everything...
@RoryAlsop Seems so.
@M'vy At least that's better than Quicktime.
09:11
@Arperum indeed
@RoryAlsop watcha'
what the hell is going on?
I randomly always start typing on the second row now.
Is it just me or is something broken?
?
It's always you @Arperum
here young people, how is "lettucepicker" a swear word?
@RоryMcCune agreed
and mods can do that (review ban)
09:18
@RоryMcCune Probably the same way "leaning sink" can be used as one I guess.
Creative cursing is the best.
And WHat the hell. The second line start is gone now.
Except not really.
I'm confused.
What are you talking about?
If I start typing a new message I start on the second row in the answerbox, as if I pressed ctrl+enter before typing.
Except it doesn't happen always.
It just magically solved itself.
oh
09:37
Mobile mode ?
09:54
@Arperum - it doesn't appear on a second line when you post
@RoryAlsop It did for a fraction of a second, but then the empty line was removed. It was weird. But the problem solved itself.
The problem also existed on replies. The reply was at the start, then a newline and then whatever I was typing.
I could also manually remove the newline.
It happened in all chatrooms I was active. And disappeared everywhere at the same time.
Unrelated: I had a serious "I want to hit someone" moment yesterday.
I give some private extra lessons, the stuff they were thought was full of errors. Like five lines of code that would not compile ever because of a shitton of extra spaces, random letters missing, "l" and "I"'s switched out.
Also they were thought to do things the SQL-injection prone way.
If I ever have a coworker that writes code that can cause SQL injection I am going to start shouting at that person. And I am not going to care if there is someone else that can hear it or not.
10:12
morning all
10:28
@deed02392 morning
@Arperum there is no longer any excuse for SQLi vulnerable code (ahem TalkTalk...)
10:44
Hi
Anyone knows how credit card info is encoded when send through a card read / what encoding might this be: 664518E36BB71C066xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx3C7CC4798C294CA460F0D136F4A
@RoryAlsop Nope. There is also no excuse for teaching that to students as the correct way to do it. And nowhere pointing out that it is a bloody disaster if you do things like that.
If I convert from HEX I get nonsense
@Jonathan Y'know, I hope that is an example code, because if that is your actual credit card code that might be abused. This room is google indexed, so anyone can access it and then later misuse it.
redacted
@Jonathan what do you mean convert from hex
does your reader encode or encrypt
cc @RoryAlsop you could change the message and then purge the history. Because the history still exists.
10:48
that is what I have just done - thanks :-)
(I forgot about the purge button)
I know mods can purge history and that it keeps the last version. so when a message is deleted and purged the last version still exists in the system.
@Jonathan it's probably encrypted
is that what you pulled off a credit card when you read the mag strip?
cos that's not encrypted i don't think, as the machine needs to be able to read the details
@Arperum No worries, it's an example
@Jonathan That's good, and now it's a redacted example :p
11:14
@JourneymanGeek Cool, looks like they upped my GTX 760 to a GTX 960.
@TerryChia: niiice
makes sense
How's the 660 been?
(also, job interview today, went well methinks)
@JourneymanGeek Flawless. Think I'll sell the 960.
@JourneymanGeek Cool! Local?
11:30
hey terry
achieved world domination yet?
@Arperum I hate metal. Just about the only music I like is Miracle of Sound
@JourneymanGeek sweet
@TerryChia you play games :o?
also I started playing this game called Factorio
so addicting
@deed02392 Wat?
@LucasKauffman Only Guild Wars 2.
@RoryAlsop HALLO WEEN?!?!?
@TerryChia isn't an integrated GPU more than enough :p?
11:34
@Simon you talk to it now?
@RoryAlsop nice
o pls that was a complete lure
@LucasKauffman Nope.
@Simon pls you're #Rekt it Ralph
11:35
@LucasKauffman HD 4000 gets me 30 FPS on low. I need a dedicated to get 60 FPS on max.
@RоryMcCune pls that's a good movie
@TerryChia There are 2 things I like about GW2: the personal story and the jumping puzzles. All the other stuff is not enjoyable for me
And yes, I got a level 80
@Simon ok in that case, after @RoryAlsop 's comment your Singing in the #Rekt
There are 0 things that I like about GW2: I miss GW1.
@NateKerkhofs what's a level 80?
11:37
@LucasKauffman max level char in GW2
@NateKerkhofs PVP keeps me occupied.
basically, I played the game until I got a character to the highest level
Then I completed all jumping puzzles on that character bar 4
@TerryChia You have an advantage either way when you play these types of games
3 in PvP zones, and one that was recently added in the capital and is considered one of the hardest in the game
@LucasKauffman He sees wider?
11:39
@Simon No, he's Asian, Asians generally perform better at gaming than caucasians
That's so unfair.
But is that because he sees wider though?
@LucasKauffman Not with 250 ping I don't.
Because he has the eyes of an almond.
@TerryChia what servers are you playing on? EU West :p?
@LucasKauffman NA. They only have NA and EU servers.
11:41
I'm still deciding with my colleagues where to buy a server. We want to have a server in a place where the latency is optimal to the EU and to SG
@LucasKauffman Yeah. Doesn't sound likely that you'll get both.
@LucasKauffman Dubai?
scrap that dubai would be a crap place for a server.. what about mumbai
Or ovidbai?
@TerryChia i thought that's what all young geniuses aspired to accomplish
@deed02392 He has a hard time having a discussion with a woman, you think he can conquer the world?
11:49
@LucasKauffman Is this because they "are closer to the keyboard?" anyone remember Crazy People
aww terry
@TerryChia: Yeah
Payments startup called hellopay
where's SG?
why not use balancing/distribute your architecture
@RоryMcCune I was considering China
Or Israel
Maybe @AviD can host something at home for me
Greetings everyone
11:59
@LucasKauffman well he does have a bunker-style lair
@LucasKauffman something worth considering. The cable between here and EU singtel prefers gets cut 2/3 times a year.
Se me we 3 I think
@NateKerkhofs Or I found the wrong Miracle of Sound, or you have a wrong idea about metal.
Either way, I'm loving the miracle of sound I found.
Yes, Miracle of Sound has some pretty nice songs.
If this is what you like, you definitely like metal, You just might not like the more extreme versions. Hating metal is an extremely broad statement.
@deed02392 singapore
12:17
@Arperum Depends on which MoS songs he likes. Some of them are quite close to metal, but many are not.
@CodesInChaos Possibly. I'm listening to a random list I clicked on bandcamp, once I'm through I'll pick another. I haven't heard anything that would surprise me on a metalfestival.
I'm absolutely not speaking about black or death metal or anything like that, but more bands like Glittertind or Otyg or one song made me think of Tyr for a bit.
It's why we surprise people - we are rock, with metal, and techno, and stuff - some of it is vaguely heavy (This Kiss or Hammstein) but we get to play at Industrial, rock, metal and even dance festivals :-)
@Arperum now I need to google Otyg - never heard of them
But it's not I see a point in arguing where genre boundaries are supposed to me.
@RoryAlsop Nor did I until I ended up owning a CD of them, I don't even know where I got that CD anymore >_>
I should get out and do some work, or I'm going to be stuck in a loop talking about music for the whole time again.
@Arperum It's this one: miracleofsound.bandcamp.com
the one that makes gaming-themed songs
12:26
@NateKerkhofs Yup, I'm listening to the right one.
Any specific stuff you like?
@Arperum Mainly the videos for the games I play. I am the Night (Batman Arkham Knight), Wake the White Wolf (Witcher 3), All As one (Dragon Age: Inquisition), probably others because I watch them on youtube where they got the game mentioned
sounds like pirate rock/metal to me
@NateKerkhofs That batman song gives me a Volbeat vibe, although volbeat is significantly more drums and guitars.
@Arperum My main preference is songs that start with somewhat relaxed music and that suddenly shift into higher gear. Not just gaming themed, too
Lac de connemara etc
@NateKerkhofs You're definitely going to like some pagan/folk metal. Not all of it. But some things.
Also: Powerglove. They have a load of metalversions of game music.
12:39
I'll check those out @Arperum
My main concern is that most metal songs start off loud and obnoxious, and I prefer to be eased in.
Pirate Metal rocks!
2
@RoryAlsop I'm half thinking about seeing if I go to some show on the Alestorm and Sabaton UK tour.
@NateKerkhofs That's not always the case.
@Arperum I think I can get to one
12:40
@RoryAlsop Making up genre names on the fly :)
@RoryAlsop I'm going to try to see them ( for the third time) on wednesday.
@RoryAlsop The genre sounds exactly as I've expected.
Awesome.
"Sweeping Scottish Pirate Metal"
@Simon perfect, eh
Yes.
12:43
@CodesInChaos What about Battle Metal? (See: Turisas, not Thurisaz, these are completely different.)
@Arperum Turisas and Nekrogoblikon were two of my favourites at Download a couple of years back
@RoryAlsop Turisas is pretty good. I've seen them on my birthday this year.
@RoryAlsop It makes me want to pour beer into an old mug from a keg and sing along.
@Simon did you listen to the Unicorn Attack on Dundee song?
@RoryAlsop Yep.
Lads, lads, I only have a pair of ears.
THE SONG SAYS I AM A PIRATE!
yup - definitely pirate metal then
I don't know how metal drummers go on for a whole show.
@Simon ANd then there are things like Nile that drum at insane speeds, and keep that up for super long too.
@RoryAlsop THIS ONE IS NOT PIRATEY!
@Arperum Neat.
12:52
@Simon that's battle metal
@RoryAlsop BOOOOOOOOO BRING BACK PIRATE METAL
2k15
It may be that they have their own genre - googling pirate metal -alestorm doesn't give many valid hits
@CodesInChaos pls, I didn't even complete the native American one yet.
@Simon I'm pretty sure there is a reason why most drummers look like they could beat about anyone. ANd are soaked in sweat after a show.
12:55
@Arperum except Lars Ulrich :-)
he looks like my daughters could beat him
@RoryAlsop I said most. I've also seen a drummer last week that looked like ha had some issues with being overweight.
@RoryAlsop your daughters.
@Arperum yup - either of them
especially the one who does tae kwon do and is a drummer :-)
@RoryAlsop Ya well, if your dad is older than the universe, chances are that he learned you some tricks.
pfffft
Or that.
12:58
@RoryAlsop pls, I bet your daughters could take down Juan Sanchez Ramirez.
@AviD Hang on - is this the Ramirez that Sean Connery plays in Highlander (my favourite film to star a Canadian, ever)
#BringBackAChatWithoutOvid
#2k15
@RoryAlsop nice catch!
:-)
immortals - we stick together
so you did see what I did there?
12:59
of course - and I liked it
(I had to go check his name, I just remember him as "The Spaniard")
I didn't need to check :-)
I love that film
and my eldest kids have seen it now - just for the soundtrack, obviously
I really should watch it again again, with the kids this time...
@RoryAlsop pirate metal represent
@AviD pls server pls
13:12
@lady.donut Do you represent my ween too?
'represent' - is that a new euphemism...
@LucasKauffman sure, why not
Kids these days.
@Simon no thanks
When your mind's dirty enough, anything is a euphemism tho
13:15
tsk tsk
@Simon whoa, harsh. Sorry bro.
I'm sure you'll get over her soon.
@AviD My ween is not a "her".
Who am I kidding, you will never find anyone half as amazing as her again, no one will ever want you ever, and you will remain alone for the rest of your days. Forever.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
@Simon I am referring to @lady.donut saying she is not interested in you anymore.
13:27
I KNOW THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE REFERRING TO AND THAT'S NOT WHAT SHE SAID
I FEEL THE NEED TO YELL TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU UNDERSTAND
@Simon Denial is the first stage.
@Simon Anger is the second stage.
IS THE THIRD ONE THE INTENSE URGE TO KICK YOU IN THE NUTS BECAUSE I'M STARTING TO FEEL IT
@Simon no, pretty sure that's still the second.
the third stage is when you go to a strip club with your friends.
@AviD He is Egyptian !
No, ovid is Egyptian.
13:30
@ThomasPornin pretty sure he was a Spaniard. From Egypt.
@AviD That's a quote from the movie. He really says "I am not Spaniard, I am Egyptian".
@ThomasPornin ohhhh riiight! I knew it was something like that
Movies, known to be as credible as Wikipedia.
well its been a while since I've watched it.
found it!
I had it backawards. Egyptian, from Spain.
13:52
♫ Who wants to live, forever
it gets boring... eventually
@RoryAlsop Indeed just ask Ashilda
@RоryMcCune Aye - so, still wondering about the connection between her and the impossible girl
impossibruuuuu
@RoryAlsop well indeed, I was kind of thinking she might end up being a companion at some point... they definitely set-up a return for a later episode!
14:05
@RоryMcCune Ashildr
@RоryMcCune and for an imminent romance between her and Cap'n Jack.
@AviD meh I actually checked the spelling just obviously something a lot of people get wrong
Although she still seems too young for her to be playing a romantic interest.
@AviD and Cap'n Jack ... may not be interested in her
@RоryMcCune yeah, its hard to tell with that accent
@AviD I think she is legal...
14:07
@RoryAlsop unlikely!
I wasn't checking, honest
@RoryAlsop I thought Cap'n Jack was interested in every entity
@RoryAlsop lol
@AviD yep - she's 18
@RoryAlsop I think I saw somewhere she just had her 18th...
14:07
ninja'ed
hey @Simon that actress makes you look positively ancient!
Positively?
@Simon like totally
completely
annnnccciiieeennnt
I don't wanna look ancient :(
@Simon I'd suggest trying not to age then
14:09
It's too late I'm already old.
@AviD I didn't realise that Ashildr was confirmed as returning in "face the raven"
oh cool
@RоryMcCune oh yes
14:48
Well, turns out that when you start a Windows 8 machine that was last shut down in May 2013, there are some updates to install...
#classicwindoze
The really stupid thing is that it insists on having all the updates before pushing the service pack that will turn it into Windows 8.1, and also replace all the files that have been just updated.
Yuuuuuup.
Yet roro keeps telling us how much he loves windoze
Silly roro @RоryMcCune
@Simon Rly, I don't recall that
I find that windows and OSX and Linux and iOS have their place :)
@Arperum Can you do that trick where you quote something and replace it with whatever you want?
Quote roro and replace the text for "i luv windoze more than my wife"
14:55
@RоryMcCune (and COBOL...)
31 secs ago, by Simon
Quote roro and replace the text for "i luv windoze more than my wife"

A: Is a file shredder/secure erase necessary when you have full disk encryption turned on?

BegueradjIf you use a USB stick for that purpose, it could be better (think of the security of the USB in this case: malware for example) However, you have to think about security of your machine beyond that question full disk encryption systems are not that perfect as an attacker usually tries to atta...

HE DOES NOT EVEN ANSWER THE QUESTION
@RoryAlsop on a cobol related note, it looks like Metasploit will soon have Mainframe exploits and payloads :)
dammit - I can't make the trick work
@Simon Uhm... I don't think I know such a trick. I can think of a way to do it with mod powers, but not as a normal user.
*&*$?"*&$?/&*$?"/$
@Arperum o
14:57
@Simon We know you do not like him, but must we be made witness to your endless stalking ?
2
by editing his message, quoting the now edited message. and then changing the message back to what it was before the quote.
@Simon yeah that's not a well worded answer
using a USB stick is probably harder to manage than answering that question directly too
lame
@ThomasPornin A stalking would imply that I'd browse his profile and read every single answer he posts. However, he seems to answer every single fucking question which means that I get to read his amazing answers.
@Simon thats a tough one, his wife likes windows a whole lot.
@Simon #BearRekt
14:58
@RоryMcCune Nah.
15:43
I think I need to take a InfoSec.SE break, it is not normal that a user manages to enrage me.
here watch the count censored
it's funny
